Owens wins in New York! Teabaggers left all soggy and wrung out.

In perhaps the most closely watched race of the night, Democrat Bill Owens has won the vacant congressional seat in upstate New York -- making him the first Democrat to carry the district since the mid-19th Century.

He defeated Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman, who was backed by national conservative and GOP leaders, who was disenchanted with the positions taken by Republican nominee Dede Scozzafava. Scozzafava, out of money and running a poor third in the polls, dropped out of the race on Saturday and endorsed the Democratic candidate on Sunday.

There were a lot of Republican victories tonight but THIS race was very important because it was the one that could have convinced numerous people and pundits that Sarah Palin and the Teabagger movement were a true political force.

This is a good thing for the REAL Republicans, a great day for the Democrats, and a wonderful day for the future of politics in America.

Gee is today almost over? I am exhausted!

Update: Gee Sarah's Facebook ghostwriter sure is up late!

Congratulations to the new Governors-Elect of Virginia and New Jersey! I’d also like to offer a special word of support to the new Lieutenant Governor-Elect of New Jersey, Kim Guadagno, the first woman to hold that office. (What about that candidate from New York, Dede Scozzafava? Isn't she a woman? Oh I am sorry she is a strong willed smart independent woman. Wrong kind!)

Of course, the real victors in this election are the ordinary men and women who voted for positive change and a return to fiscal sanity. Your voices have been heard.

The race for New York’s 23rd District is not over, (Yes it is! Don't you read the news? Oh, I forgot.) just postponed until 2010. The issues of this election have always centered on the economy – on the need for fiscal restraint, smaller government, and policies that encourage jobs. In 2010, these issues will be even more crucial to the electorate. I commend Doug Hoffman and all the other under-dog candidates who have the courage to put themselves out there and run against the odds. (Stupid bastards who don't have a chance in hell but are so desperate for attention that they are willing to join our crazy ass group.)

To the tireless grassroots patriots who worked so hard in that race and to future citizen-candidates like Doug, please remember Reagan’s words of encouragement after his defeat in 1976:

“The cause goes on. Don't get cynical because look at yourselves and what you were willing to do, and recognize that there are millions and millions of Americans out there that want what you want, that want it to be that way, that want it to be a shining city on a hill.” The cause goes on. ("Shining city on a hill"? I have been to Wasilla, it is more like an "un-flushed turd in a bowl".)

- Sarah Palin

You know this is the upside of crazy. No matter how much reality refuses to bend to your will you still have the voices in your head to tell you that you done good.

  4. So loser Palin backs a loser. I'd love to say I rest my case, but of course this is all painfully far from over. What kind of political half-life will Palin maintain by feeding on her followers during her book tour?

Really though it is all a lot more "Dark Shadows" than "West Wing".

  5. Some idiot "conservative" was on Chris Matthews saying that Palin and Beck and the other nutjobs scored a big victory by forcing Dede out of the race. Matthews was looking incredulous as the returns were coming in showing Owens appearing to be winning. Matthews asks the guy how this was good for the Republicans? Well, because they forced Dede out and then scared those 11 Republicans who picked her to run that they better put a REAL Republican in!

The guy is looking giddy and happy at how "the people" supposedly really showed those RINOs. Matthews is asking questions the guy can't answer in any sensible manner. He's saying again to the guy "but Owens is ahead, and a Democrat hasn't won in that district in way over 100 years! So how is this good for the Republicans?". No sane answer.

Right then the call comes in: Owens wins it. The "conservative" gives a good try of acting like it was the point that counted but he looked pretty low. Sarah was right about one thing: Dede did the right thing by dropping out of the race. She wasn't going to be used to split the vote, and wasn't going to endorse a guy who knew nothing about the district. This was actually somebody who TRULY quit for the good of her consitutuents. (Well, okay, Alaskans are way better off without Sarah, but she sure didn't do it for them).

Good for Dede, looking out for her constituents. And congratulations to Bill Owens, first Democrat elected there in years. Later I saw Hoffman give his concession speech. He is clearly a guy whose intellect is not his strong suit. Seems his biggest credentials are signing Glenn Beck's 9/12 petition and that he is 100% anti-abortion.

Hey Sarah fans who donated to Hoffman, I hope you are learned that there are better uses for your money. Do you get it that she was using you to try to help this guy win so SHE would look better?

  9. Biblespice Palin's ghostwriter just posted this on her FB re Hoffman. (BTW, Hoffman did NOT thank sarah in his concession speech):

“The cause goes on. Don't get cynical because look at yourselves and what you were willing to do, and recognize that there are millions and millions of Americans out there that want what you want, that want it to be that way, that want it to be a shining city on a hill.
    The cause goes on."

From wikipedia: "City upon a hill is a phrase derived from the metaphor of Salt and Light in the Sermon on the Mount of Jesus given in the Gospel of Matthew. Matthew 5:14 states "You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden."

  15. Thank goodness the good Republicans of NY23 resisted blind loyalty and voted their beliefs. From what I heard of interviews Owens mirrors their core values, and understands the intricacies of the area.

I saw an interview of Hoffman. He sounds like he has the I.Q. of a doorknob.

I imagine the fact he was a carpetbagger didn't sit well in the district either. The least he could do is move into the district temporarily during the campaign.

The good news is that despite boatloads of cash trucked in from teabaggers and wingnut morons all over the country, they could not buy an off year special election in what is arguably the most Republican district in the entire country. If they can't pull off a victory there, where the hell are they ever going to be successful? They focused all their idiocy and money on that one little spot in upstate NY and..., fizzled.

Palin, Thompson, and Pawlenty have now got to try a suck up the RNC, 'cause they spent the last two weeks pissing in the GOP punchbowl. I'd love to hear some of those conversations.

Palin has all of the political acumen of Ross Perot, but none of his brains or money - and Perot was not exactly known for his brains. Palin is a moron.

  21. I am so proud of the people of the 23rd district!
I am happy that they saw through the tons of money poured into this race and would not bow to pressure from people from out of town and out of state.
I am also extremely grateful to De De for having the courage to stand up to this cabal of chicanery.
She represented the republicans of this district despite what was said about her.
Sarah palin and all her whining last year about women. She helped destroy this woman's career.
She was elected by the people of her area for exactly the same traits that her so called republicans trashed her for.
This IS the face of the republicans in my area. We all are tolerant, good people who look out for one another and take care of each other. There are many poor people in this district, who rely on government programs to tide them over in this great time of need.
I did not see the Conservative party help this district in any way, nor did I even see or hear of them before this election.

This race was about bullying of the worst kind, people like palin and beck deciding for all of us(we the people) that their ideas are better then ours.
Hoffman lost because he had no plans to offer the people, no solutions and would not debate the issues with the other candidates.
I am happy and proud that we survived the bullying, the incredible amount of money invested by outsiders and the undue influence by the radical right.
Perhaps now more people will realize that in order to be elected, people need to have solutions, plans and goals. They cannot be elected on the basis of destroying good people and having another person write your Face Book announcements for you.

  26. Big picture here...McDonnell and Christie who shunned Sarah Palin win...and Hoffman who embraced her and her teabagging friends lose what should have been a no brainer for Republicans. Sarah is still political poison.

I don't know about Christie, but here in VA McDonnell reinvented himself as a moderate, actively sought Democratic endorsements, and focused on economic and fiscal issues. He courted ethnic voters in Northern Virginia, and had a very weak opponent who did not follow the successful playbook of his two Democratic predecessors. There really was not a whole lot of daylight between the two candidates except for the social issues, and Deeds is a very conservative democrat. He made no outreach to minority and ethnic voters. So Virginia just voted itself back in time 40 years with McDonnell...thank God our state constitution limits him to one term.

I am just happy that Sarah's candidate LOST.

Shall I go on? Plus their over-the-top worship of Missy Sarah Uber-Xtian and her "Armey" of minions. 52. To expand on what ella posted about "the shining city on a hill" in her comment at 9:53 PM last night:

Also from Wikipedia, farther down in the entry:

"President Ronald Reagan used the phrase on January 11, 1989, in his farewell speech to the nation: And that's about all I have to say tonight. Except for one thing. The past few days when I've been at that window upstairs, I've thought a bit of the "shining city upon a hill..."

As ella notes, the original reference is in the Gospel of Matthew, simply, "A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden." Puritan John Winthrop repeated the phrase in a sermon to the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1630 and President Kennedy did also in a speech he gave in early 1961.

It was Reagan that made the phrase more lyrical, and that's the one Palin quotes.

I know we've all noticed how the "liberal media" is using the state races in NJ and VA as measuring sticks for Obama, and the way the wing-nuts, including Steele, are crowing all over the blogosphere, but that's because they can't see the forest for the trees. Dems won in this off-year race because we picked up 2 seats in the House of Representatives, and both of the congressmen-elect support hcr with a public option. State politicians have no votes in Congress. I expect the right-wingers to continue touting their victories, and yes, they won state elections, but we won in the national arena and will be able to influence policies that cover the whole country. Michael Steele can continue with his Heisman poses. He has my permission. We have 2 extra congressional votes.
