Are those that participate in "open carry" demonstrating their insecurities and an embarrassing lack of "testicular fortitude"? Yeah I think that is fair to say.

From MSNBC:

Daniel Almond, a three-tour veteran of Iraq, is ready to "muster outside D.C." on Monday with several dozen other self-proclaimed patriots, all of them armed. They intend to make history as the first people to take their guns to a demonstration in a national park, and the Virginia rally is deliberately being held just a few miles from the Capitol and the White House.

Almond plans to have his pistol loaded and openly carried, his rifle unloaded and slung to the rear, a bandoleer of magazines containing ammunition draped over his polo-shirted shoulder. The Atlanta area real estate agent organized the rally because he is upset about health-care reform, climate control, bank bailouts, drug laws and what he sees as President Obama's insistence on and the Democratic Congress's capitulation to a "totalitarian socialism" that tramples individual rights.

Isn't it cute when little boys play dress up?

What signal do these morons really believe they are sending to those that see them standing around with their penis extenders strapped to their waist?  Do they really think that people see them as powerful?  Manly?  Capable?

If you were looking around a group of men and trying to determine which ones most likely had the smallest penises, do you know what you would look for?

Yep, you got it.  Unless you are a cop nothing says "I am an insecure male" more than having a pistol strapped to your waist.

Furthermore you are essentially allowing everybody who sees you to know, without a doubt, that you are terrified of the world and fearful that somebody will injure you if you are not armed. It makes you look more like Barnie Fife than John Wayne.

I have heard the argument that when these guys are standing around with pistols strapped to their stylish leather belts that they are actually ensuring the safety of all of those around them.  Apparently they believe that advocating for MORE people to bring instruments of death into public places is safer than allowing NO instrument of death into public places.

Using that line of logic I guess if MORE people walked around infected with Tuberculosis, and mingled with large groups of people, that it would make it LESS likely that others would be infected.  Yeah that's brilliant.

I think it is clear that the only reason one would display a weapon openly on their person is to convey a sense of menace.  In other words they want those that see them, whether they are a potential mugger or a hot chick, to believe that they are dangerous and must be respected. But that only works if the people who see them also believe that the individual packing the weapon is willing to use it.

So what they really want the world to think is that they are a potential killer.  (Guns are not designed to wound, they are designed to kill. All of that garbage you see in cowboy movie about "winging them" is a bunch of shit.  Handguns are designed to take a life, nothing more, nothing less.)

So these insecure little boys are desperate to convey the message that, despite their pudgy waist, scrawny arms, and man boobs, they are a potential instrument of destruction, and, by virtue of their Wal-Mart purchased hand gun, should be both respected and feared.

Personally I don't respect or fear them.  I don't respect anybody who feels the need to carry a gun in order to feel manly or tough. (I have no problem with the idea of carrying a weapon as protection against bears in the wilds of Alaska, but in the wilds of Anchorage, or any other city or town, they need to man up.) And I don't fear them because if they DID pull that weapon on an unarmed person the police would remove both the gun and the right to carry one, which would leave these poor pathetic excuses for men completely impotent and probably hiding under their beds.

In Alaska anybody over the age of 21 can openly display a handgun in almost every place except on school grounds and in banks. But most Alaskans do not take advantage of that law because they realize that, unless they are in bear country, it just makes them look pathetic.

There are some notable exceptions however.

Yeah THAT guy is our most visible advocate for open carry and 2nd amendment rights in this state, which just about sums up the problems with the movement in a nutshell.  Don't you think?

  1. I know many people who carry concealed pistols. Several of them are nuts. Seriously. One of them is my sister who is mad at her cheatin' husband. It's a recipe for disaster. Instead of making the country a safer place, knowing that people are carrying a loaded weapon terrifies me. BTW, I have no problem with owning guns if they are used for hunting game. I do have a problem with people carrying while going about their daily business.

  2. Yes, these people are beyond pathetic. Reminds me of a Bogart line out of "The Big Sleep - so many guns and so few brains". Well, I have often said you cannot really improve on the Original Tough Guy. He would laugh at these little boys wanting to play grown up, but scared to really take the plunge. You are right Gryphen, they are more like Barney Fife than The Duke.

You know I absolutely love your reference to Barnie Fife, because these guys will get defensive when you rightly call them out on their penis replacements, but when you refer to Barnie Fife, they get sort of flustered because no one wants to be a symbol of impotence and empty posturing no matter how well-intentioned Barnie was.

He was the symbol of someone who longed to be more masculine but went about striving for that image in all the wrong ways whereas, the most masculine image on the show was Sheriff Andy - reaching for his guns only when absolutely necessary preferring instead his intellect and ability to calm people through humor and rational discussion.

Thanks to you, instead of seeing hoards of creepy guys at the park, I see only scads of misguided Barnies, thrashing about, posturing and preening, hoping someone, anyone will think of them as men.

Poor babies. What kind of women are they trying to attract by their puffery and preening. I shudder to think.

Perhaps they are just trying to appeal to each other. Most of them are probably homophobes, latent homosexuals, too afraid of themselves to face up to the possibility they want to impress other men. But boy howdy, they can sure feel safe bonding over weapons, huh?

I wonder if their eyes flit to each other's holsters, wondering whose gun has the longest barrel or packs the biggest bang. Ahem.

As a woman, I feel both repulsion and pity for them. Real men don't need weapons to protect themselves or their loved ones and women know this.

Daniel Almond... not going into the translation of his anglicized name... but I will venture a Guess:
He was a REMF during his three tours.

One shouldn't assume that all gun owners are right wing nut jobs. Those protesting in (near) DC are in fact nut jobs, but they do not represent all who own guns.

I am a democrat and own a weapon, also a CCW. I don't carry everywhere I go but do carry if I am out alone at night for some reason.

I also firmly believe in protecting myself and my home and family IF the need arises. Many people on both sides feel this way. It is those few on the far right that always want to make it an issue and try to prove something which in turn makes it hard on everyone else.

I assure you if you ever have a crazy fuck stalking you, you will get sick of hearing the cops say they can't do anything unless the stalker does something to you. That's when you'll learn to protect yourself.

There is no need for most people to carry a loaded weapon everywhere they go, but for some it is a necessity.

  10. This is such a recipe for disaster...It would take just one crazy person with a loaded gun who uses it at this rally to make people rethink the laws about national parks and allowing guns.

The line This is why we cannot have nice things. comes to mind...

I really wish the Obama administration would take a good hard look at closing the gun show loophole, and the one for selling guns in newspapers too. I've seen semi-automatics and military-grade weaponry being sold in our classifieds. Right now, there are no rules against this, but this may change quite soon at our paper.

    So true.

Basically I really don't want the world, good and bad, to know how I plan on defending myself.

This freak is packing inside a park for the publicity. After a few days, his protest cause will be lost in the publicity.
Kinds stupid if you ask me.

I am SO SICK of these Jerk-offs! An old 'Tool' song from the early 90's comes to mind...(Tool means to offend)! So don't go gettin' your panties in a wad...

    Tool Jerk-Off Lyrics:

    Someone told me once
that there's a right and wrong,
    and that punishment
    would come to those
who dare to cross the line.

But it must not be true
    for jerk-offs like you.
    Maybe it takes longer to
    catch a total asshole.
    but I'm tired of waiting.
    Maybe it's just bullshit and
    I should play GOD,
    and shoot you myself.
    Because I'm tired of waiting.

    Consequences dictate
    our course of action
and it doesn't matter what's right.
It's only wrong if you get caught.
    If consequences dictate
    my course of action
    I should play GOD
    and shoot you myself.
    I'm very tired of waiting.

    I should
    kick you,
    beat you,
    fuck you,
    and then shoot you in
    your fucking head.

With any luck, there won't be too many self-inflicted gunshot wounds when these bozo's bring their loaded weapons to the party.

Maybe their new rallying slogan should be "Pause before you play"...

  14. Anonymous 12:11, this is not an ant-gun post, this is an anti-asshole post.

As you know I live in Alaska and there are a number of places that I do not feel comfortable going without a weapon. But trust me the bears will not respect a holstered weapon anymore than I respect one in downtown Anchorage.

If you do not think there is going to be a reason to use it then do not bother to bring it.

The NRA among others has convinced these neanderthals that their gun rights are being endangered. What's really disturbing about them is that they chose the 15th anniversity of the Oklahoma bombings to make their dubious point.

Fortunately, they do not represent all gun owners. What is on display in this kind of a demonstration is a demonstration of their own insecurities and paranoia. I wonder what they say when someone asks them how has their right to own guns been enfringed upon.

I just returned from a luncheon event at the AZ State Capitol, and I saw a woman with a rifle over her shoulder getting into her huge pick-up truck with white paint letters on the windows saying "Senator JD Hayworth". I wonder what kind of insecurity she has.

I am with Gryph on this one. If you don't plan to use it, don't have one. I have a 44 mag strapped to my chest for bear protection in Berners Bay. I am a short woman. I do not ever plan to use it unless a Grizzly charges me. ( I have drawn on a sow with cubs but she false charged twice and didn't need to shoot). Us Alaskans care about our wildlife and it's citizens. I and others do a lot to be responsible gun owners including being safe with them (keeping them out of reach of children and not toting it around in public like these JACK-HOLES)!
We are NEVER anti-gun here in AK. JUST ANTI JACK-HOLES! These guys DO have a little-wiener complex as the MEN I know never have felt the need to do this. It would be slightly interesting to find out how many of these idiots have giant trucks...

Yep, carrying guns like this is the reflection of a deeply-rooted insecurity, no doubt about it. Little men need big things, loud things, and if some such things can enhance their perceived "power" in some way, then all the better to use whatever it is which achieves that. A tough exterior is often used to cover up a lot of things, not just a tiny penis. The most macho/tough friend from mine from my childhood turned out to have been trying to run away from his homosexuality for most of his life ... In any case, it is obviously nuts to believe that it's a necessity to openly carry a gun on your hip.

But, these are just cowards.....like the leaders they worshipped for 8 years, Bush and Cheney, who were the same....tough talkers, but when it came time to actually put their own asses on the line....the ran.

Ever since the day he was elected, the gun nuts have been claiming that President Obama was going to take their guns. Here we are almost 18 months later and we've yet to see any legislation brought forth that threatens their owning of guns. I have no problem with someone wanting to own a gun. However, I cannot understand why with all the crazy whackjobs in this country, why we would ever allow anyone to buy a gun whether it is at a gun show or not, without getting prior approval from a background search? That is just reasonable legislation yet for some reason the NRA fought against it. Did anyone say they couldn't buy the gun? NO! They said they had to wait until a background search is done.

Their recent showing in Washington proves nothing except they are being led by misinformation.

Step 1: Wear several pounds of metal off hip to compensate for lightweight crotch.

Step 2: Get mad because your back hurts.

Step 3: Utilize Obamacare to get medical help for your aggravated back problems.

Step 4: Pick up a nice pain medication addiction and start slacking at work.

Step 5: Lose your job, start drawing unemployment insurance.

Step 6: Attend the Tea-Bagger rally with a misspelled sign.

Step 7: Drown in your own irony.

Gryphen, by George, I think you've got it. This ridiculous situation is clearly getting out of hand. The long and short of it is, we need strong, public minded to women to "hold back" on their insecure men until they pack the heat away in the locked closet where it belongs.

  24. I have had to use my weapon three times in defense. But here's the thing: I live in Montana.

I used it once to protect my cats from a coyote, once from starvation crazed wolves who actually came after me, and once because some lady's kid was getting mauled by a swan and she was throwing things at it to no avail (swans are vicious).

And you know what? I've never ever EVER felt the need to wear the thing on my hip except when deep woods hiking... and for then that's only because it's REALLY convenient to not have it interfering with the straps on my backpack.

When I'm around my neighborhood or going into town? Concealed under my shoulder; where it belongs. It's frankly peacocking to openly carry. I laugh at the little boys who feel the need to open carry.

However, those of you who think everyone who carries a gun are trying to compensate for something? You're actually even funnier to me. In every situation I used it, I theoretically _could_ have used a stone or something, but the pistol took care of business a lot quicker and with less risk of my getting wounded. In the case of the child too (stupid?) to run from the swan that kept pecking at his eyes, someone was actually already trying other things and it wasn't working. The pistol enabled me to step wide to make sure nobody could get hurt, and end the situation.

Living in Montana near the forest edges, these sorts of runins are incredibly common. The only difference between my way of handling it and most of yours is I don't call the Animal Control people to kill the crazed beasts for me.

Oh, and to the blog owner? Barney Fife may not be the best example to use. He carried his pistol allright, but he only ever carried one bullet. And it was in his front shirt pocket.

Umm.. that post above labeled with my name? "Victor Ziblis"? I did not write that post and I'd appreciate it if you'd remove it.

I've never shot a "pack of wolves" and while swans are vicious, they also do not occur in Montana, to the best of my knowledge.

I actually practice semi-open carry myself.
