On this Memorial Day weekend Sarah Palin honors the troops by plagiarizing a veteran's poem. Stay classy Sarah!

From Sarah's Twitter account:

VETERANS,not reporters, give freedom of the press.VETS,not politicians, give freedom to vote.VETS,not campus radicals, give freedom to assemble

Apparently Sarah Googled "insipration Memorial Day poems" and stumbled upon this particular work.

And Sarah being Sarah, she simply took this homage as written by Charles M. Province and made it her own.  You know by making it suck.

Here is the poem as this veteran of the United States Army originally wrote it.

IT IS THE SOLDIER

It is the Soldier, not the minister
Who has given us freedom of religion.

It is the Soldier, not the reporter
Who has given us freedom of the press.

It is the Soldier, not the poet
Who has given us freedom of speech.

It is the Soldier, not the campus organizer
Who has given us freedom to protest.

It is the Soldier, not the lawyer
Who has given us the right to a fair trial.

It is the Soldier, not the politician
Who has given us the right to vote.

It is the Soldier who salutes the flag,
Who serves beneath the flag,
And whose coffin is draped by the flag,
Who allows the protester to burn the flag.

In my opinion one of the best ways to honor the military is to give full credit to one of it's members, not only for their service to our country, but also for the poem they wrote to honor their fellow soldiers.

But hey that is just me.

Update:  Gawker has picked up this story as well.

She also subbed "campus radical" for "campus organizer." She's like a college student who thinks if you change one word, you don't have to cite your source. Or maybe she's trying to say something about the students of CSU Stanislaus. Either way, she's an idiot.

Sarah Palin's level of ethics and intellect is so far below the average American that no one, once they knew, should have supported her political and celebrity career.

It's been said so many times before, but bears repeating until the truth of it sinks in: Sarah is only concerned about Sarah. She doesn't think about giving credit to others. She doesn't give of herself or her money to those who need it most. She doesn't take the time to understand issues, learn how to grow outside her comfort zone to help others, or even take the time to raise her own children.

Sarah doesn't only make a poem such by mangling and stealing credit for it, she herself sucks at being a caring, compassionate human being.

  3. Thanks for the laugh! Something gets lost in the twitter version and it does suck. Was there an accompanying tweet giving reference and credit? lol..laughing anticipating the answer.
I appreciate the poem to reflect on. I hope Palin's new book does not bastardize inpirations she read. I have come to have very low expectations of Palin.

The original poem is written as to emphasize veteran contribution in a respectful manner.

We should all note the parts of the poem Sarah chose to include. Reporters, politicians, and campus "radicals." Even when it comes to praising veterans, she resorts to "hidden" mean girl comments.

Sarah uses the learning about the 5 W's in her college journalism courses as one of her 'talking points'. Even though most of us remember learning this from elementary or junior high.

You would think that she, also, learned the concept of citing sources. But, alas, not a rule she was expected to follow.

She has gotten away w/ doing this for years and must have heard of Vaughn Ward's lifting of one of Obama's speeches. Pssst, Sarah, it was in the news all last week.

This is a different world and anyone can notice this just by googling keywords.

As KO says, what an idiot! And, at the expense of a vet, too, on Memorial weekend, ironic, huh?

  9. I've had to play bugle at a few memorial services for deceased Vets, where the chaplain did his own anti-liberal version of this poem. Hew's a pretty active Ft. Richardson uniformed cleric. Palin's version is almost word-for-word like his. Chances are that Palin has heard this guy do the bash version and just lifted it from him.

hehe she is not giving honor to the military, she is using the occasion to anger some VETS on her behalf, look at my enemies:

    Reporters- writing stuff about her.

    Politicians- her opponents.

Campus Organizers- she call them radicals-CSU The students who found part of her contract were clear by the investigation as where the papers where found.

Yes, Sarah is an idiot - all logical, intelligent people recognize this. Do we really expect original thought from her?? Something else bothers me this Memorial Day weekend more than Silly Sarah rearranging the words of someone else's work. I am sick of the FauxNews bubble heads complaining about our President not attending ceremonies at Arlington, like he's setting some sort of precedent. This opinion piece in my local paper this morning is well-written and hits the nail on the head: http://thepatryanreport.com/2010/05/29/memo-to-glenn-beck-and-fox-news-media-mogul-rupert-murdoch/

The only time the US has been invaded is in 1812, after WE declared war on Great Britain. The only people who have ever tried to take those rights away from us are the conservative reactionaries like Palin.

Y'know, this would have been a good time for a thoughtful, thorough, essay on what this country owes to its veterans. Instead, they get 140 characters or less (or is it 240?) tossed like a bone in their general direction, with words she was too lazy to think of for herself.

  19. An excerpt from the latest note on her Facebook page:

So, in honoring them let’s keep in mind this version of a popular poem as we show respect for those willing to sacrifice all for our exceptional country:

“It is the veteran, not the preacher, who has given us freedom of religion.

It is the veteran, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press.

It is the veteran, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech.

Lauding the praise on the soldiers is only valid when the wars they are fighting are valid. Today's wars are not valid and you know it. Why do you continue to praise them just to find a way to get a shot at Palin? Are you so propagandized that you don't understand that your country's wars are phony and illegal wars? If you don't care to condemn the wars and the murderers carrying out the murder then you could at least remain silent on the issue. The way you are carrying on now is just encouraging the lemmings and saving them the effort of thinking a little deeper about what they support. Support the troops? Support those who murder in the name of corrupt government?

Sarah is mentally ill. And it's showing more and more and more. Rules, etiquette and common sense practices simply do not apply to her. She doesn't care that she copied someone work because she's Sarah, chosen by God. If you confronted her with this, what would she say?
The woman is SICK and frankly I'm tired of the MSM giving her a free pass. Enough is enough. It's going to take more prominent journalists or some respected organization pointing out her constant lies, etc nonstop before the MSM finally does it's job.
I wish someone would start a website that documented every lie that comes out of her mouth. Yes Gryphen and the others do that, and they do a great job! Thank God for the bloggers, for Andrew Sullivan, for Geoffrey Dunn and Joe McGinniss, Keith O and Rachel M. Maybe someone prominent (Ron Reagan Jr? Or I don't know who) would start a blog that was black and white, simply documented her lies and mental illness with proof and not a lot of commentary.
    That's my dream.
If she runs for president, we can bet Romney and others will do it.

Sarah Palin is the worst thing to happen to this country and she will not go down in history in a positive light. We can all bet on that. She will go down as polarizing, negative and hateful. Like George Wallace or a Joe McCarthy.
Her comments about the president are treasonous and she is an obvious racist.

Since we are talking truth, I would like to tell you the tale of how the Tawd got his high voice. Tawd didnt always have a high voice. Actually Tawd was had what once was considered a lively baratone with a range. One foggy night, while unloading his boat, a stranger appeared at the dock and called out to him. It was Sarah Heath. They had parted in high school when she graduated and moved on to better things. Sarah needed a husband. She was knocked up by the Dentist's kid and he wouldnt marry her. Todd consented. At the small wedding dinner, the Heath family and Todd munched on his nuts while cracking wise about Native rights. After that dinnner Todd never spoke or sang the same way again because he effectively traded his nuts for white trash.
(Chucky was relieved that he didnt have to pay for Sarah's bastard's hospital expenses and pleased that now he could hunt on Native land and get all the red and kings for free.)

The problem with the poem is that there were soldiers in Nazi Germany who were not protecting anyone's freedom of religion, speech, right to assemble or for the press to print what it wanted. There are soldiers in Africa who have committed brutal acts against their own people for the serious crime of being a woman or not being religious enough to suit them.

Memorial day is supposed to honor those who died in war. It originated after the Civil War to heal and unify our nation. It was called Decoration Day because people decorated veterans' graves with flowers and flags. The time to honor The Soldier is on Veterans Day.

Wasilla fence fascinating for national media outlets

Published on Saturday, May 29, 2010 7:04 PM AKDT
The “Today” show called Friday morning saying it plans to come up Monday and do some interviews about the fence Todd and Sarah Palin built on their property on Lake Lucille.

According to people who care about those things, the former governor wrote on her Facebook account that she was worried about the neighbor, Joe McGinnis, moving in. He’s the author of several books, one of which is an alleged non-fiction story about his exploits in Alaska titled “Going to Extremes.” That was published in 1980. It was a bible for all those who dreamed of moving here or were in the process. Local press wasn’t too kindly to it at the time, saying he missed a lot and exaggerated the rest.

Observers from Outside get that a lot.

McGinnis also wrote last year a fairly scathing article for Portfolio magazine — which no longer exists — about Palin’s plans, or not, for a gas pipeline.

So it’s not surprising she might be a little leery about her new neighbor.

Again, that happens a lot around here, regardless of notoriety.

Fences are built by people who want to keep their privacy or keep out the sight of their neighbors’ unsightly yards.

So the call from “Today,” quickly followed by a similar call from ABC news, seemed curious. The day before it was another national news outlet wanting to know if we had a photograph of the fence. There was an e-mail from Outside asking if the Palins were in compliance with city code. Another note suggested we assign someone to trace every move McGinnis makes while here and write a book about him to counter his about Palin.

Maybe we’re out of step here, but the unanimous consensus of the newsroom is that we don’t really care if the Palins want some privacy from what they worry might be prying eyes.

Fences have been known to make good neighbors and everybody knows we could use a lot more of those around here. So if the fence keeps McGinnis on one side and the Palins content, why would the “Today” show or ABC care?

Finally, those who are fond of Joe McGinnis might remind him (if he doesn’t already know) that Alaska has a law that allows the use of deadly force in protection of life and property.

But the time frame of getting us through the courts is more than five months, which is his timeframe right now.”

It's indeed plagiarism to read a poem in a speech IF you don't acknowledge the source of the quotes. At best, you could be called out and mocked for the intellectual/ artistic theft, or, at worst, be sued by the original author/ artist.

If your knowledge base on this subject represents a typical Palin fan, then it's no wonder that her fans don't recognize Palin's penchant for plagiarism. Plagiarism is theft, legally and morally.

Shades of the attitude of "patriots" in the 60s and 70s towards the Vietnam veterans. I thought people like you "grew up".

BTW, you're wrong about the meaning of this holiday. It's to honor the WAR DEAD, the ones who died fighting upholding the principles that unite this country (no matter how misguided they sometimes have been).

Sarah far from worships the vets: They are mere pawns in her quest for self-aggrandizement. I do recall a certain speech she ended with an admonishment to "not disrespect the troops" by bickering over matters of left-right political ideologies: a war of words that she herself spawned and continues to stoke with her incendiary idiocy.

    She's an asshole.

Once again I ask "Why didn't YOU ever serve in the military, Sarah?"

She served in the same branch as Obama and Biden.

    Youth Poisoned Against Palin
    By Adrienne Ross

If we're going to "take our country back," we'd better be sure we figure out a way to take our children back. The garbage they have been fed is stinking, and I smelled it in my classroom Friday. It took all the strength I could muster to remain calm and handle it quickly and professionally. I managed, but I was boiling inside.

Here's what happened during my second period class.

I always take time to acknowledge holidays and observances. As Monday is Memorial Day, I talked briefly about honoring U.S. military who lost their lives, the greatness of our country, and the freedoms our military provide for us. Then I showed them a short video tribute to our troops with Lee Greenwood's "Proud to Be an American" playing in the background. The students were very respectful during the video, which is saying something considering this particular class.

When the video ended, I was going to my computer to turn it off. However, because I was playing it from my playlist, it immediately proceeded to the next video in the playlist, which was a Governor Palin video. Before I could stop it, the jeering began and spread throughout the classroom.

    "Who cares about Sarah Palin?"

"Oh, be quiet!" another student said to the Governor.

"Nobody cares about no Sarah Palin!"

It erupted simultaneously and surprisingly. Laughter filled the classroom.

I was headed to the computer but was totally thrown by the outburst. The co-teacher in the room with me said to the student who asked who cared about the Governor, "I do" or something similar, and the student said, "You do?"

Fear of writers that do research grows, Sarah Palin’s brother joins the Wasilla clown posse. In interview with the Daily Creeper, “we’re creeped out by it, like everyone else is,” Palin’s older brother, Chuck Heath Jr., said. “It’s an unbelievable invasion of privacy.”

Reply: Because Sarah was too busy doing Curtis Menard. Unless you consider servicing Track's father "Curtis" her patriotic duty?
