Is it my imagination or are Sarah Palin's Tweets getting nastier and nastier?

I went to Sarah's Twitter page today to check on something and as I started to read them I was struck by just how ugly they have become.  Here see if you agree.

Helen, Helen, Helen... unimaginable misunderstandng of Jewish history...& unconscionable indecency.Press corps colleagues calling u on this?

I have read opinions from a lot of people who believe that Sarah has BOTH her Facebook posts and tweets ghostwritten, but I have to disagree.  These sound like pure "mean girl" Palin to me.

It's OK to tell Helen to sit down and shut up as long as she doesn't agree with Palin. Also, Too, are you sure piper is not writing these for her?

I agree. Mean girl all the way.

I am very offended by her remarks about Helen Thomas. Why is it no one can speak out against Israel when it behaves badly? Even parents reprimand misbehaving children - why not the US when any country behaves inappropriately. I know - not everyone will agree with me. However, consider this - if Sarah is for it, can it be right?

My recent favorite was when Sarah tweeted a quote from Helen Keller. In order to squeeze it into 140 characters, Sarah did have to condense, edit and misquote Helen, but it's the thought that counts. For a Journalism major, she must have taken the course that suggested that accuracy was not important if you just came close.

I thank God Sarah spoke out against Helen Thomas. I am very offended by YOUR comment 7:17 am. OF COURSE people can talk against Israel when Israel in your words "behaves badly." But Helen Thomas did not do that at all. Helen Thomas made a blatent anti-semitic, hateful comment. She said that "Why don't the Jews go back to Germany and Poland where they came from."
First of all, that is incorrect, the Jews have been in that land for 500 years and to say they should go back to where they were being exterminated is a very very sick mean thing to say..... It also shows that Helen Thomas does not believe the Jews have a right to a home land. One little tiny piece of land in the entire world is all that they want and to live in peace....

As a Jewish liberal who despises Sarah Palin, I am thankful that she has the balls to speak up FOR ISRAEL and its right to exist when Israel is surrounded by 21 Arab countries that want to extinguish it.

Anon 7:17, how do you know Israel behaved inappropriately in this situation. Were you there on the boat? Or are you going by CNN? Or MSNBC? The same stations that have such honest reporting about Sarah Palin??? Hardly!! What if, let's say, that one of the boats was filled with people from a Turkish terrorist group and they were smuggling weapons in and were armed themselves. Why do you think you know the truth when unless we were there, we wouldn't know. And if Israel did screw up, does that mean you think they don't have a right to exist? It sounds like that is how you feel.

Just because we hate Sarah does not mean we have to hate every single thing she does or say. When we do that, we lose all validity. And that is kind of happening on a few of these blogs (not yours Gryphen). Where everything she says or does or every hair style is ridiculed. After awhile, it becomes hard to pay attention to what is real or what isn't....

I am offended by Helen Thomas. She is supposed to be an impartial journalist and she isn't. She despises Jews and she let that be known and she will lose her job over it as she should........... Do you really want journalists that biased reporting things??

Helen Thomas was the hate filled person in this case. Not Sarah. The fact that any one doesn't see that, makes me question the kind of person they are.

And Gryphen.....you label this a mean girl comment? I guess that means you agree with her about Helen too. Doesn't Sarah every do or say anything right?
I know you don't think that but if you lose total objectivity, that won't be good for your blog......

And my final comment is Sarah, 99% of the time, I wish you should STFU because no one cares what you think. But in this case, thanks for sticking up for Israel when Helen Thomas declared they do not have a right to a homeland.

    The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
    Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
    The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
    Are full of passionate intensity.

    Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
Troubles my sight: somewhere in sands of the desert
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds.
The darkness drops again; but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

    --William Butler Yeats

Sarah Palin and her ilk are prodding that rough beast with a sharp stick.

Sarah does not use words that big unless she's been coached. I suggest that her handlers have given her a weekly vocabulary list (remember those from school?). Her homework is to work them into her tweets each week after having practiced using them in regular sentences. When she is able to use a word correctly in a sentence, she is then allowed to use it in a tweet.
As for the Israel mess, it is always difficult to tell what is going on because Israel is so often dishonest about what it is up to, as are the folks on the other team. I tend to think of Israel as a guy with a teeny tiny penis. Doesn't make the guy a bad person, but it does tend to make him react in certain ways that are often over the top. Tiny penis on one side, giant log-sized chips on shoulders on the other side. They will still be trading hate when I am cold and dead. With this latest incident, I suspect that there is plenty of fault to go around on all sides. As for Helen, when the msm finally goes after the real potty-mouthed hatemongers who don't have a lifetime of good journalism under their belts (Beck, limpdick, sarah, etc), then they can go after her and tell her to cool the crap.

You all just love to hate Sarah - its sad. I used to be one of you but not anymore.

Even if Israel did do something wrong, that is not an excuse for all of you to say the things that you are saying.

And Gryphen, do you think it is mean to tell someone who expresses hatred for a racial group that they are out of line? Interesting, given you have a daughter that is in a minority.

CORRECTION TO MY 8:03 post. The Jews have been in "Israel" for 5000 years, not 500. I left out a zero.

I am very saddened and upset by the comments here.
I guess even liberals can be filled with hate. I always wondered why the right said that about liberals, but in this case you are all condoning blatant HATE SPEECH. It is very sad to me. And I am very hurt. I wouldn't care if you said Israel was wrong, but that is not what you are saying.

Helens comment did not criticize Israel-it was hate speech towards an entire race.

Dear Anonymous @ 8:03; Please do not imagine for a moment that Sarah has any goodwill towards Israel or the Jewish people. Remember that her belief system involves total destruction and Armageddon. Jews living in the Middle East are an integral part of the lead-up to the Second Coming according to Scarah. Oh, and will they get to go to heaven? Uh, no. Not unless they renounce and convert.

Palin's remarks aren't intended as an example of her foreign policy expertise, they are an example of her attempt to stir up her base, looking forward to the thrills of a "Left Behind" scenario.

Of course, she's expecting to star in the movie, and with her newest twin additions could be sort of a Jane Fonda-as-Barbarella starlet.

Sarah Palin did not stick up for Israel. Her HANDLERS stuck up for Israel and she tweeted what they told her to tweet. Anything she says is suspect.
Sarah Palin is anti-Semitic. She ran for mayor of Wasilla as the only "christian" candidate. The man she ran against got her started in politics and was a friend named Stein (not Jewish). She put ads out insinuating he was Jewish so none of the Wasilla racists would vote for him.

I am an African American liberal. I have learned that if a scorpion waves and smiles at you he is waving and smiling to sting you. Sarah Palin is parroting. She cares nothing for Israel--never has except to have the Jews convert to Christianity so the rapture can come.
Helen Thomas stuck her 89 year old foot in her mouth. What she SAID was wrong. What Palin really THINKS is shameful.

Right now-- if Palin defended me against a klan member I wouldn't trust her as far as I could throw her buddy Glen Beck.

This is ridiculous. Helen Thomas apologized for her comments and then announced her retirement. Now when is somebody going to fire all of the Fox folks for their DAILY hate-filled comments?
I don't like Israel. It has nothing to do with Jewish anything. It has to do with their hawkish government. Lots of liberals feel that way. What Helen said was wrong, but you can bet that her nasty comments had something to do with years of frustration at watching Israel get away with all sorts of crap. Doesn't make what she said any more palatable, but it does make it somewhat understandable.
Now, I'm going to say this again: I don't like Israel. They are pretty much assholes. Somebody gonna call me an anti-semite? I don't like numerous Muslim nations either. More jerks. Does that make me a racist or something? I abhor the religious right in this country? Does that make me anti-American as some whould have us believe? Does it make me anti-Constitution? Nope. I would like to get into a hair-pulling, biting fight with ol' Sarah. Does that make me a violent person? No, it makes me fed up and itching to slap a stupid.
We have gotten more and more broad-brush with our accusations, our prejudices, our ideology. This country is so tribal now that it is difficult to find common ground with anybody. I'm fed up with all of it. I'm thinking I will just dislike everybody. That ought to cover it.

  25. What an unfortunate way to end her Whitehouse tenure.

Helen IS 89 years old and sometimes people of a great age as that say inappropriate things.

I wish she would be remembered for all the great works she did rather than this horrible, horrible remark.

That's what happens when those close to you are not honestly looking out for your best interests.

There had to be other incidents and signs in her private life that would indicate that her capabilities were beyond the work she was doing.

I wonder how many of her critics have a family member, or would see themselves working at 89 years of age?

I sincerely hope that Ari Fleischer ( who is the first to call for Helen's firing) lives to at least 90 so he can appreciate what that age is to live through.

Helen was obviously a thorn in Ari's side when many were questioning the accuracy of certain claims made by Fleisher in support of the decision to invade Iraq.

Because of the fact that Ari resigned the Whitehouse Press Secretary's position in utter disgrace, that makes him a complete impotent critic of Helen Thomas.

Remember the Valerie Plame incident, the "outing "of a CIA operative?

After receiving~~~ an immunity agreement,~~~ Fleischer testified that he had revealed Ms. Plame's identity to reporters after learning it from Libby.

Ari Fleischer gave his final 'Press Briefing' on July 14, 2003.

and before you deny it, research it.

furthermore, you people who are coming here and suggesting that because we criticize palin, that means we are encouraging hate speech are seriously lacking in the critical analysis area. you think you will "run people off" with your faulty logic - but not everyone is as easily manipulated as you are.

  28. And THAT my friends is how a comment thread gets hijacked.

Okay first off I included the Helen Thomas remarks NOT to defend Helen but as an example of the kind of condescending, mean spirited attitude that Sarah has been portraying with her tweets these days.

But if I must address the Helen Thomas incident I would say that I believe that Helen was expressing frustration at the constant strife between the Palestinians and Israelis. She obviously has sympathy for the plight of the Palestinians, and so do many other well informed people.

However I think that where she went terribly wrong was in suggesting that the Jewish people abandon Israel and return "home" to the countries that perhaps their grandparents, or parents, abandoned to live in this place that has such deep religious and cultural significance to them. And mentioning Germany as one of those places was very, very insensitive. I agree.

However I also must say that I have been a HUGE fan of Ms. Thomas over the years and that I am truly sorry to see her career ended, and possibly her life defined, by one poorly thought out comment on an extremely emotional topic.

And it should be further noted that the Right Wing has had it in for Helen Thomas for decades, and that I found Palin's glee at her embarrassing remark to be simply nasty. Which is WHY I included it in with the other tweets.

Now as for how over the top the reaction to this was.

Getting as worked up as some of you did about the topic kind of reminded me of how certain OTHER people get when I do not appear to demonstrate the proper respect to THEIR sacred icon.

Believe me I DO appreciate the strength of people's convictions, and please note I DID approve all of your comments even though some were quite nasty.

However for future reference do not waste your time threatening me or telling me you will never come back to IM. If I had a penny for every time I heard that I could...well I could easily pay for the movie I am planning on going to later this afternoon, AND have money left over for a large popcorn and ginormous soda.

And as much as I appreciate all of you who come over and spend a little time reading what I write, I really don't work for you. I work for the truth.

So if you want to storm off the this blog in order to teach me a lesson, then I have just one thing to say; Don't let the internet hit you in the ass on the way out!

To those of you willing to stay I hope you have a great day, and that I continue to earn your support in the future! And let's all take a moment to pray, or simply wish if you prefer, for a peaceful solution to the Israeli/Palestinian conflict and also wish the wonderful Helen Thomas a long and happy life.

She has done much to assist us in our search for the truth and, despite recent remarks, she really does deserve our respect.

Sarah "taking on" the oil companies in Alaska and upping the tax is directly correlated with them moving to deep offshore sites. Since people in this country have such a short attention span, I'd love to see the comments by oil companies stating that the taxes in Alaska have driven them offshore placed DAILY next to Sarah's bullshit tweets blaming "extreme greenies." Once is NOT enough. Every day, day in and day out, a section that just juxtaposes Sarah's nonsense with public statements of reality. You could just have a reality-check sidebar.

I too am sorry Helen made a butt out of herself, because her final question & comment will be her rememberance. Especially when there are so many other points she has brought to the front page of American politics over the last 50 years. Unfortunately, Helen Thomas did not climb to the ranks of adoration like SP and therefore will not be graced with political redemption.

However, ScarySara is no doubt heading into meltdown mode - being under 24/7 home scrutiny (only in her mind) is driving her bonkers.

I was wondering if her failure to dress appropriately at Belmont this weekend was an attempt at "in your face with the so-called elites" Either way, Sarah would win with the t-bagger crowd - if they denied her based on her attire .... Excellent balanced comment @ 11:20 AM, Gryphen.

It usually only takes me a sentence or two of reading a comment to assses the poster's agenda. While I don't mind emotion or conviction in a comment, I just skip the posts which are obviously one-sided claptrap.

As a previous poster stated, if all the opinionated liars on FOX News got fired, it would be a ghost town at FOX. The hypocrisy is sickening in our culture.

Intelligent people are looking for discussions with other people who can also see the complexity and thorniness of tough issues. Regarding most of these issues as "black and white" is a mindset for children or indoctrinated puppets.

She'll be 90 in 2 months. At least she had the grace to apologize and now today, she's resigned. Sad.

When have we seen Palin apologize for anything? For stupid SP to accuse Helen Thomas of "unimaginable misunderstandng of Jewish history...& unconscionable indecency" is sickening. Sarah can't understand the simplest things and the word "indecent" had to be coined to describe Sarah Palin. The fact that Helen Thomas, who has been around since I remember from her younger years (50+), said this to a Rabbi just shows no common sense at all. Let alone journalistic integrity.

All of these years, and it took this episode for me to become aware that Helen Thomas is of Lebanese descent.

So, she may have stated her truth and maybe has said this type of stuff over the years in private and nobody has called her out on it.

Or, at the age of 89, she might not be as mentally agile as she was in her salad days.

This is why we should not stay at a job longer than we can do it in a professional manner.

I believe that there is a 2nd part to this video that the Rabbi is releasing tomorrow, perhaps?

FFS! The woman is about 100 years old, but let's not take THAT (and its implications) into consideration, let's first make a federal case out of it and get ourselves some cheap publicity on the back of her old bones.

Palin may have been irritated and angry when she wrote "Helen, Helen, Helen" but the overwhelming tone is scolding intellectual condescension.

Intellectual condescension coming from the likes of Sarah Palin is just downright funny. She goes on to accuse Thomas of "unimaginable misunderstanding" and "unconscionable indecency." Both of these phrases perfectly describe Palin herself on almost any subject she blathers about. No wonder she's the butt of so many jokes by so many people.

Sometimes, you have to ignore this ignorant woman. Tweets from a fourteen year old twit are not worth mentioning. I realize your goal Gryphen is to expose the idiot for the person she truly is. However, overlooking the B.S. from to time to time is sensible.

In regards to Helen Thomas, I disagree with what she has said, but I don’t believe she should have been fired. We have to remember she is a 90 old year woman who, I believe at the time, was not in her right mind. Mrs. Thomas has had an incredible life who took no prisoners when it came to questioning Presidents for the people. She has asked the questions WE ALL WANTED ANSWERS TO.

I am African American, and I want to know where is the outrage when it comes to the media never ending belittling of President Obama. Why do you think they are always pandering to the idiot from Wasilla? The innuendos and blatant racial smears towards the President by the media are just as worst as the comments made by Mrs. Thomas, yet no one is upset.

  51. Good commentary Gryphen and many good points were raised here, not the least of which is the fact that Palin & her handlers are shameless opportunists. Must every news story be followed by one of Palin's trite tweets?

I only have one point to make about the reprehensible comment from Helen Thomas. People have to remember that there are many holocaust survivors & their decendants living in Israel today. No matter what you may think of the actions of the Israeli government, think of those who lost entire families, their homes, their businesses, their friends, everything before escaping from Germany & Poland. Then listen again to Helen as she suggests that they go back to Germany & Poland.
