How does she do it? Sarah Palin has RNC sending money to her attorney for "legal bills." WTF?

Recently Hotline on Call broke the story that the RNC is STILL paying some of Sarah Palin's legal bills, having written a check as recently as September 1, 2010, for more than $129,000.00:

The RNC has sent more than $129K to an Anchorage law firm to cover legal bills incurred during former Gov. Sarah Palin's (R-AK) run for vice president, a senior party official tells Hotline On Call.

The party cut the check on Sept. 1 to Clapp, Peterson, Van Flein, Tiemessen & Thorsness LLC, an Anchorage law firm that defended Palin from myriad ethics charges following her campaign.

Political opponents in Alaska filed complaints against Palin surrounding her travel during and after the campaign.

"The disbursement relates to legal fees incurred during the summer and fall of 2008, when Democrats engaged in a partisan witch hunt against Gov. Palin. Based on conversations in 2008, the RNC decided to step in to help," said Doug Heye, the RNC's communications director.

If your jaw just hit the floor and your head is now full of "WTF?," then welcome to the party,  because that is EXACTLY how all of the rest of us feel.  No way does this make any damn sense.

After all:

Isn't this woman now a multi-millionaire?

Doesn't she have a defense fund dedicated to paying these very bills? (Of course this is her SECOND legal defense fund after the FIRST one was found to be illegal.)

And besides that isn't the RNC broke?

With about $5 million in the bank and at least $2 million in debt, the RNC is not going to be able to fund such paid get-out-the-vote activities as direct mail and robocalls for gubernatorial and Senate races. Instead, the national party is focused on using its limited resources to assist GOP candidates in targeted House races, which are more inexpensive, with turnout efforts.

So why would a struggling Republican National Committee be paying a multi-millionaire's legal bills for for ethics complaints that she incurred while Governor of Alaska? Obviously there has to be more to this story, and journalists who read about it decided to look into it further in an attempt to answer some of the question listed above.

Here is one follow up filed by the Washington Times:

The Republican National Committee is paying off some of former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's sizable legal fees dating back to the 2008 presidential campaign in exchange for her help raising money for the financially strapped RNC during the campaign season, The Washington Times has learned.

OH!  I see.....wait what?

RNC Treasurer Randy Pullen, who co-signed the check with RNC Chief Administrative Officer Boyd Rutherford, said Mr. Rutherford told him the check was in exchange for Mrs. Palin's help with RNC Chairman Michael S. Steele to raise money for midterm election campaigns.

"The initial payment was for Palin to do several different fundraising events and sign fundraising letters for the RNC," Mr. Pullen said. He said the RNC has committed to sending the Anchorage law firm a second check of an equal amount, which would bring the total to $257,037.70.

"Fundraising?"  What "fundraising?"  She refused to attend the RNC fundraiser in April. And though she DID show up to the Ronald Reagan dinner in Iowa last Friday, in her speech she essentially dissed the RNC in favor of the Teabaggers. And the only "fundraising letter" I know of is this racially charged piece of propaganda that she sent out in August.  Let's be serious is any of THAT worth in excess of $257,000?

What is really going on?

Did the RNC make some sort of commitment to Palin while she was the VP candidate to handle her legal bills?

Mr. Steele's immediate predecessor, Robert M. "Mike" Duncan, who was RNC chairman in 2008, said there was no authorization to pay Mrs. Palin's legal bills while he was chairman. He said the process when he ran the party required approval for such payments from the RNC's chief counsel, chief of staff and chief financial officer, with the party chairman and general counsel brought in if necessary.

"To the best of my knowledge, all of the governor's necessary and proper legal bills that could be paid by the RNC or by the RNC and the campaign ... were paid before I left office," Mr. Duncan said.

Well there was no equivocation in THAT statement now was there?

Okay then do OTHER Republicans get paid to raise funds for the RNC?

Former RNC Chairman Frank J. Fahrenkopf said he could not recall a similar arrangement for those helping the party build its financial base during his tenure.

"Wow. I never paid anyone money to make speeches and sign direct-mail appeals," Mr. Fahrenkopf said.

Another RNC veteran said such an arrangement was unusual.

"For the most part, people donate their time to help fellow Republicans win races," added former RNC General Counsel David Norcross. "But I can't say that paying for that time has never been done before."

So giving the RNC, and Palin, the benefit of the doubt, and, even though it is highly unusual,  these payments really were for "services rendered", then WHY say they are for her "legal bills?"

I don't know about any of you but in my mind this Washington Times piece actually raises many more questions than it answers.  I am all the way up here in Alaska and I can still smell the stink coming off of this "deal."

I will bring you more on this story as it becomes available, and if any of you happen to stumble across any new information please leave it in the comments section.  I don't believe for an instant that this is the last we will hear about Sarah Palin and her sugar daddy Michael Steele.

Sarah is the Alaskan Zelig. She can be anyone, anything and always comes out like the star she is. It helps to have friends in high places that love it when she hates the media she loves.

Welcoming. It is all good with Mark Ballas in Alaska. Is that Trig? Tripp? The young ones turned out, can't be at Rumrunners past 10. It looks like Levi's cousin by marriage is there! Happy unification family! Alaska Stars!! Lots of "Run, Sarah, run!" Even better, check out The Situation and get him to Alaska!!!! ASAP!

Don't miss the big show tonight!!

well she didn't get the name GRIFTER for nuthin'! she's always found a way to make others pay her way, from the taxpayer to the rnc. on the one had this is bullshit, on the other it's a great example of how the rnc is falling apart. I don't think she's going to be the cash cow that they might be thinking.

What is Alaska's law regarding ethic's complaints? Are they kept private unless permission is given to make them public? There are still ethics complaints against her which have not been made public, right?

Hmmm, it sounds like a way for her to avoid taxes on money she is getting for fund raising.

I also saw her legal defense fund is being used for her, her family and her staff's legal bills. That's a far cry from when she set it up strictly to pay for the ethics charges.

People are losing their homes and living on the street while this crazy bitch just keeps getting richer at their expense.

    This is just sooooo rich.

A multi-million dollar defense fund, ruled illegal and started over with no apology or humility and asking for MORE money on top of what was returned.

A treasure trove of PAC money spent on everything to promote Sarah's image and products rather than the politicians she's supposed to support.

A personal wealth developed from 'unfactual' ghost-written memoirs and shell non-profits created and dissolved before her six figure regurgitation speechifying is mopped up from the podium floor.

She's so happy to spend other peoples hard earned dollars, happy and unapologetic to rack up ethical complaints on her vendetta and personal gain M.O. and still have others pay for it.

She's a piece of work, a bastion of free market enterprise for ya.

We vote with our wallets as often as we vote with our ballets. The RNC is poor for a reason. And that reason has a name: Sarah Palin. Three percent of the ¨base¨ did not show up for this ¨rock star.¨ Weĺl see how this plays out after Nov.,4th.

This makes me wonder if the RNC has decided upon some hidden far right-wing agenda.

Is someone writing a book about how Palin gets by with all these things? Can a crazy dumb person really be that foxy?

In addition to Sarah's contract that the students found in the dumpster at CSUS, other enterprising students have found some of Sarah's discarded emails. In them, she let the RNC know that she would be more than happy to stump for the candidates of her choice, and waive her usual $100,000. speaking fee. She does require first class travel for four or private jet as per her usual Washington Speakers Bureau contract, two to four body guards, depending on size of crowd, hotel suites and meals, bendy straws and water. Since no fee is being paid, Sarah does expect the RNC to offer "in kind" payments, such as payment of any and all legal bills, rights to the wardrobe which has been kept in storage for the past two years, speaking engagements for Bristol, photo opportunities for Tripp, more snow machines for Todd, additions to her media center/TV studio, and other demands to be specified at a later date.

Technically, Sarah should be reporting this as income. Just as she should have listed those clothes the Repubs bought her.

And I am SO tired of the stupid press parroting that line that the ethics complaints were filed by Democrats! Most were filed by republicans.

Evidently, Republicans are ok with the GOP throwing their monetary donations away to no good use. Such worthy causes NOT:
    - Pay Palin's legal bills (She's f___ing rich, morans!)
    - Try to elect Tea Party unvetted, nutcases like Christine O'Donnell, Nathan Deal, Joe Miller, Dan Maes, etc. (America will suffer unimaginable harm if actually elected but who cares?)

And the GOP criticizes Democrats for wasteful spending?

It doesn't make sense to me but nothing does anymore.

God, sometimes, I just think it's The Manchurian Candidate-- because Palin is teflon. Nothing sticks, no matter how outrageous, everything is all good. The only way my poor brain can make sense is to imagine some mighty cabal is pulling her strings to get into power. (If you've seen the movie, you understand.) After reading the Trig Born in Anchorage post a few down, I had the biggest sinking feeling yet. That she'll unroll the hoax (with crocodile tears) and come out like a saint because she ADOPTED a special needs child. IT's a neverending black comedy of American gullibility.

The RNC should pay her legal bills for the phoney-baloney McCain/Palin manufactured second ethics complaint lodged with the Personnel Board, from whom they expected, and got, a verdict of no wrong-doing.

This was no Democratic witch-hunt - the original ethics complaint in Troopergate was filed by a majority REPUBLICAN legislative council and did find wrong-doing.

McCain/Palin hired US Atty Ed O'Callaghan up from NY to mastermind this, along with pro-bono services supplied by a Liberty Legal Institute (TX) right wing lawyer legal team.

I still can't believe that Alaska allowed a national campaign to hijack their own government investigative process - and that Talis Colberg went right along with it. (And left for a three week vacation right after. . .)

    ReplyDelete
  30. Anonymous9:57 AM

Do these RNC payments include the the McCain campaign brought in from NY as I recall to do damage control of troopergate?

Money laundering comes to mind. There is Sarah PAC that pays legal fees, the illegal former and new defense funds and the RNC. Gosh, and they are going to maintain the ethics complaints are unwarranted? ROFLMAO

Todd's email about the campaign "cloths" comes to mind that Sarah was entitled (all the Palins) to what came to be excess of 250K of clothing for after all it seems she did everyone a favor despite losing the election. SP is a bottomless pit and no matter what she gets including perks she'll still be Sarah who charges the state per diem for staying at home. She is Sarah who goes on Fox claiming her family is "just getting by" like everyone else.

Has the RNC considered the opposite is true, that they'd get more donations free of this con artist? The jets, accomodations, book deals, multimillion dollar deals, even bendy straws are not enough for Sarah in the end will take more then anyone ever gets back unless her destroying your reputation and credibility in a book is the sum of what anyone gets back. The clue phone has rung, RNC, Ssarah is queen of the Teabaggars, a turncoat.

Maybe if the GOP isn't shelling out fast enough, Sarah just goes rogue and endorses the worst un-vetted Teabaggers she can find. That would motivate the GOP to fork out more dough before she endorses more sure-bet losers.

Good gig. She stays in the news and still gets paid.

What happened is the RNC begged Palin to help them with fundraising and she said, not unless you pay me suckers, and they did. Then they claim it's for her legal fees to try and explain why she wouldn't donate her name and time for free. Easier than her putting out a press release saying she's a greedy bitch who only cares about herself, ya know?

What I'd like to know is 1)How all those who donated to her first (illegal) fund and then her new legal defense fund feel about this given the fact that they haven't gotten their refunds back yet and 2) How the "tea party patriots" feel about her taking money from the establishment?

I'm glad the RNC gave her the money. Less to spend on candidates, and just like with her speeches, they're not going to make the kind of money from her they're expecting. Case in point, my husband and I threw the letter we got from Sarah Palin, The Grifter, into the trash yesterday. No money or votes for the RNC this year!

This is a way to cheat the IRS.

Simple. She earns the money by her labor, but the payment doesn't get listed on her income taxes. It slithers into an untidy hole where it is spent on Bristol's condo, Willow's legal problems, and anything else except Palin's own legal matters, which have been thoroughly covered. Van Flein is helping her launder money to avoid accounting for it as income. Pffft!!!

The side benefit? The RNC is more broke than before (drown it in a bathtub), so the Tea Party candidates have millions more to spend than their moderate cousins. Thanks to Citizens United, the Kochs can spend like drunken sailors to position their chosen ones... and then purchase their seats.

Since she was told no by McCain's people & the former RNC head, it sounds to me her legal bills are part of an extortion racket. Who knows what embarrassing little tidbits she heard or is willing to make up she would use against whomever in the GOP.

By the RNC admitted this money is being used as a tit for tat, then this money is taxable. Sarah may think if the RNC directly pays her lawyers she's not responsible for the taxes. It is still considered income under the barter system.

I'm wondering how much in taxes she's responsible for when a group pays her air fare, lodging, meals, etc ... It seems to me that beside her 100 grand speaking fees those extra perks would (should) be taxable.

The Washington Times releasing this info is interesting since they are a Right Wing rag, but I think it has more to do with Michael Steele than with Sarah. The Washington Times have been outing the stupid things the RNC has done while in the hands of Steele ... remember they were the ones who broke the story of 'Strippergate'.

One more thought, wasn't one of Sarah's reason for quitting the gov job was because she just had to save the state all those mounting legal fees?

How is the RNC getting away with this? Has that question been asked and answered? Where is Palin's statement on the money from the RNC??
