The Department of Public Safety has decided to investigate Joe Miller's private Gestapo. Update!

God I LOVE this picture!
From the Alaska Dispatch (Who else?):

The firm Drop Zone Security is apparently being investigated by the state Department of Public Safety in connection with its handling of a Joe Miller campaign event on Sunday where Drop Zone agents arrested and handcuffed Alaska Dispatch editor Tony Hopfinger.

The DPS case comes as public attention remains focused on questions surrounding the incident, including why Miller employed private security guards, some of whom were active-duty military, and what led to the physical confrontation that ended with Hopfinger's arrest.

Alaska Dispatch had called DPS Monday to find out whether Drop Zone was licensed as a security company by the state and whether Fulton, its owner, has a valid security guard license as would be required by the state.

Early Tuesday morning, Peters left a voicemail on a Dispatch reporter's phone saying the company did not have a security guard license.

A couple hours later, however, she said she couldn't say anything more about the company or the case because DPS had started an investigation based on numerous questions from reporters. And again, she won't say specifically that Drop Zone is the subject of the investigation.

Okay, seriously I am going to need MUCH more popcorn for this!

(Don't forget to read the entire Alaska Dispatch article, there are many more goodies to be found there.)

Update: I visited the Drop Zone building yesterday just to check the place out.

When you enter the front door there is an immediate sense of claustrophobia, acerbated by the fact that what is causing the closed in feeling is shelf after shelf of khaki colored military apparel and equipment.  (As I told one friend, it looked like General Patton had exploded in the place.)

Essentially the place looked like a militia member's wet dream with helmets, camouflaged bullet proof vests, and military paraphernalia on every wall and shelf in the tiny, closed in, cramped little building. (Have I mentioned the sense of claustrophobia yet?)

The rather young man behind the counter looked a little spooked by my presence and when i asked a few, I felt innocent questions about where they get their merchandise (from military auctions by the way), he immediately asked if I was a reporter.  I said no (That is mostly true), and asked if they were having a lot of trouble with reporters.

"Oh yeah!" he said.

I wandered around the building (That took about ten seconds.) before choosing a duffel bag that I thought I could use to store some of my exercise equipment, and then went back up to the counter to make my purchase.

When I whipped out my debit card the clerk told me that I would have to use the broken down old ATM machine next to the cash register and withdraw cash to pay for it as they ONLY accepted cash.  I asked why, and he told me they had trouble with credit cards in the past. (Of course it might have something to do with the fact that they have not had a business license for much of this last year.)

As I was waiting for the world's slowest ATM machine to cough up my cash, the phone rang.  When the young man answered the line was dead.  He then hung it back up and  said 'Yeah THAT keeps happening too."

"What?" I asked.

"People keep calling and hanging up.  Or yelling things at us and hanging up."

"Well that's a bummer." I said.

I had noticed a t-shirt hanging on the wall advertising bail bonds service.  So I asked if Drop Zone was in that business as well.

The kid suddenly looked a little suspicious and replied "Yeah we do a little bit of everything."

I did not bother to ask him if he did any of it well, because that seemed a little mean. (After all he was polite, if a little suspicious.)

I left the store and went out the back where I had parked, and noticed three red, white, and blue directors chairs lined up along the back next to some military vehicles and a giant banner that said "Eddie Burke for Lt. Governor" printed in big black letters.  Well THAT explains a lot, I thought.

Earlier my friend Dennis Zaki had driven by and taken a picture of the back lot, and caught the owner, William Fulton, sitting in one of those star spangled "ass holders." (As my father would have called them.)

So after seeing this pitiful little excuse for a business I have to wonder WHY Miller chose them to provide the security (That he absolutely did NOT need!), when there are many reputable and LICENSED security agencies in Anchorage?  I mean it only takes a few minutes of being inside of this sorry excuse for a business to realize that these guys are NOT professional.

My feeling is that this group's ties to the Alaska Citizens Militia may have played a very large part in his decision to hire them, and it also speaks to how Miller would represent Alaska in Washington.

He is clearly a very unstable individual, with fantasies of a para-military response to the Federal government dancing in his head, and he is NOT the man we want to represent us in Washington!

So if you are an Alaskan looking for sanity (And after Sarah Palin aren't we all?), then this is the candidate for you!

Apparently Drop Zone is basically a front for the Alaska Militia and run radical AIP'rs connected to the Michigan militai group that trined Timothy McVeigh....Joe needs to go. Everyday that passes Joe gets in deeper and deeper shit.

"...On Tuesday, Fulton told Alaska Dispatch he is not a security guard and that Drop Zone is not a security guard agency, which is why neither he nor his employees are licensed by the state. He said the company is instead a "contract agency" and that he and his people are considered "security agents," not guards...."

"...(Fulton said) "We don't do anything covered under the security (statutes)," he said. "We don't do anything that the state has any authority to tell us what to do."

Fulton said his company does not do security work like patrolling or checking on building security...."

    Hmmmmm.....sounds fishy

Candidate for U.S. Senate Joe Miller (R-AK)

Maybe it's because it's way out in Alaska and there's a big time difference, but GOP Senate nominee Joe Miller's declaration last week that he's not going to talk about his past anymore is so comical and indefensible that I'm surprised it hasn't gotten a bit more attention and put the national Republican committees more on the spot.

It would be an absurd position under any circumstances, but a guy who comes in out of the blue to wrest his party's nomination away from the incumbent U.S. senator deserves the scrutiny and owes it to voters to be open to it. Add in the fact that Miller's recent past contains some incidents deserving of scrutiny, and you start to wonder if Miller can really sustain this facade of his past being off limits.

Then this morning comes this quote, via Justin Elliott, from Miller's old boss at the law firm he worked for in Anchorage back in the '90s after graduating Yale: "We at this firm were not eager to have him stay, and so when he announced he was leaving, we were relieved."

    Do tell.

I don't understand why everyone keeps saying this guy was "arrested." He wasn't arrested; the cop came and freed him from the thugs who had assaulted and kidnapped him. This framing of what happened is simply one more injustice to which Hopfinger is now being subjected. He was not arrested by the police.

How they say that they are not a security firm and beyond the scope of following the state mandated guidelines when placing an individual under arrest is beyond me.

I think Joe is heading for a real poll dip and if he is elected his actions may warrant a recall and new election.

    Hey,

Think anybody can convince the state, city, county (whoever collects them) to do a sales tax audit?

I mean, that would be a real simple thing to do. Doesn't even involve the IRS.

Sales tax audits are rough and can be done quickly. They take a quick look at your inventory, check your records, and figure out if your inventory match your records.

Then, they see if the sales tax payments have been done.

Tons of businesses get shut down due to sales tax audits.

In fact, you might want to check the paper, they might be behind on their sales tax payments already.

Had some interesting intereaction with someone from the Michigan militia few years ago. The lighter version of what you have in Alaska.

Narrow minded, intent on doing what they can versus what they should and defending the country from all comers. Kind of scary for someone who wants peace. He was a nice guy, but you felt that you could not trust him.

He really did not trust anything, even banks. Bought his current truck by saving all recyclable cans and taking them home to Michigan. 05 cent deposit on each one! Kind of wierd and independent.

It's no coincidence that Jackboot Joe & Toad are such good friends. They undoubtedly bonded through the AIP & probably now through the Alaska Militia. This is probably the reason so many folks are unwilling to speak out about the Palins. These thugs are more than frightening. If these are the tactics they use in public view, I'd hate to see what happens when they go after people in private.

You may remember that Mark Chryson (SP?) of the AIP was influential in getting Sarah elected Mayor. She tried to get him on the city council but was defeated with that ploy.

My question is: How can Sarah possibly be considered for a Presidential run with these kind of ties. Wouldn't they have to pass an extensive security check? At what point would that be done? Before or after the election? Shudder!

Ironic that folks like these are so gravely offended by the Wall Street and Auto Industry bail-out, when they themselves helped foment the economic collapse with over-the-top energy-consumption in the way of the corporate subsidy purchasing power and arrogance of Hummers for business purposes and a tax-write off.

I think Miller hired them because they also too, hire active Army men. Is it wrong I feel sorry for the 22 year old but not the 31 yo? That man should know better, but the kid is probably lonely and broke and seduced by the FundyTaliban.

Anyway, careful what you wish for you arrogant pricks - Miller and Fulton want all this power, notoriety and attention - look where it got them.

I had also called DPS yesterday and requested they look into this. They acted as if they hadn't heard from anyone else. I'm glad they had. I hope more people call them as well.

They seemed particularly interested in the fact these guys claimed to be "agents" - we both had a good laugh at that one, but they also took it seriously. The fact that they're armed and attempting to pass themselves off as more than they are is disturbing. I described the photo where they were holding the guy at gunpoint as his wife and kids looked on in horror (mouse has made his myspace page private now).

The deal is these thugs could be doing a lot of crap they aren't supposed to be doing and they may well be behind a lot of the intimidation people seem to feel about Palin and why so many won't speak out against her.

Does anyone have pics of the security people Palin had with her in Seward when they ripped down the worst gov ever banner? It would be hilarious if Palin is using the same security people.

I am interested to know about Track Palin's connections to DropZone or any of the Michigan Militia persons. I don't see how Track would have a direct link, for appearances sake. He might work for someone other than the Army. Does anyone know if he quit that Army job? There are some interesting NRA and military who are close Palin friends in the Mat-Su and nearby that Track is friendly with. Very similar and love the Burke dude and Tipton's lover. Track and Todd have always looked AIP to me. Sarah's TLC Alaska show will be a joke but they may have something about Track's work and why his mother is so proud of his combat. He must be doing something great and worthy that is kept a secret.

Joe Miller is now linked to the Alaska Militia, per the approval of Norm Olson, it's leader. William Fulton is working with Norm Olson and is considered their supply sergeant.

This is not a rhetorical question. Has Miller ever been to Washington? Does he perhaps have other fantasies of moving the seat of government to, say, Alaska? Lynne,

Track's low profile is not only from being embarrassed by his mother. Young teens are embarrassed by a parent, most grow out of it. It is plausible that Track is still embarrassed by her but that is not all there is to it. He is for sure demonstrating that he is not growing up. Have you ever known him to speak or act like he is his own person, on his own? They make such a big deal about Bristol being on her own. Track is not doing what other soldiers do, one tour of duty and clinging to the parents and no one will say what he is really up to. Other than photographing the neighbor and building a poorly constructed fence for Mommy. He is doing his Mommy's Reality Show, he can't be that embarassed due to her. Track does pose for those dark portraits with his family like on mother's day and to be a Reality Show star. His embarassment issues mask much more. He may have been embarrassed to appear with his Army bros at that welcome home ceremony but the way it was handled brought up more questions. He shows serious anti-social behaviors. Nothing about Track says he is proud to serve his country as in respect the constitution and chain of command. Whatever it is about with Track he operates in darkness, he looks angry, he calls his sister names and he has a questionable history.

That meme about "Track is embarrassed by his mother" is more a talking point and excuse about his odd behaviors. It covers up reality. Not everyone that knows him is buying into that one.

Mark Sumpter - "How they say that they are not a security firm and beyond the scope of following the state mandated guidelines when placing an individual under arrest is beyond me."
There's no guidelines on being a security firm outside of what's contained in "state-mandated" regulations to get licenses and permits. DropZone doesn't have any. So they have to say they are not a security firm.

There ARE NO guidelines for anyone other than an officer placing an individual under arrest. Security can hold someone until police arrive, but only an officer makes an arrest.

We have "Citizen's Arrest" in Alaska. That's what they're using. It would be interesting to know if a "citizen's arrest" by someone who is not acting as a "citizen" but as a paid commercial service is actually lawful.

8:56 AM - "I heard that if someone is "outed" by a third party, the soldier has a right to admit it and will receive an immediate honorable discharged."
Homosexuality is a violation of the Military Code. You're fired.
That's what "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" is about. Military administration are prohibited from asking; soldiers are encouraged not to tell, because the commanding office HAS to take action and fire them for homosexuality. It's an actual code that gets put on the discharge papers.

SME131- "...called DPS yesterday...acted as if they hadn't heard from anyone else....seemed interested in the fact these guys claimed to be "agents" - we both had a good laugh at that one."
The Department of Public Safety is playing dumb. They know about DropZone and William Fulton. DropZone is the Alaska version of Dog the Bounty Hunter. The guy shows up at the Anchorage Jail in a clearly marked black Suburban with prisoners in the back seat.
They either have a working relationship with this man, or they've got a file on him. One way or the other - they know about him. He's on their law enforcement team!

"Soldiers are barred by the code from working for politicians"

This is what perplexes us about Track Palin. He clearly seems to be working for a potential candidate, someone that is a game changer and backs up candidates that they want to win, like Joe Miller. If Track did change jobs, why wouldn't they make a statement? People change employment and it is no big deal. I think he is working for the military and that somehow includes his work with his family. The lines are unclear but the TLC so called reality gig is to sell a political brand. Whether Palin runs for an office or is only a kingmaker of a politician.

It is certainly curious about all the "security guards" and what nots around the Palins. They should all be looked into. While I don't think that the DropZone Bill crew are the only hired thugs at Millers or Palins beckon call, they are certainly a special group.

While in Los Angeles Bristol can't go far without Ivy Frye. She must be the only security Bristol needs in California. That was not the case when she went to RumRunners in Anchorage.

The male next to Bristol at Rumrunners is not her date. The Alaskan Dispatch had a little problem taking photos and her "handlers" kept who they didn't want away. TMZ is alright with the Palins and they could print the proof that Bristol only ate nachos. No one questioned April Morlock at all, she is not over 21 and it looks like she was drinking. For whatever reason it looks like that story and the so-called ABC investigation was bogus. It will not surprise me if this latest state investigation is as bogus.

If people are serious about looking into the security guards around the Palins they should not over look Bristol's posse. Remember some of these people are old family friends, relatives and long time aquaintences. It is not always easy to tell if or what they are quarding. Ivy Frye and the young man at RumRunners with Bristol don't necessarily work for Dropzone Bill. They are all from the same small town atmosphere and they all have sealed lips about what is actually going on. All their friends have connections and know what not to say, who knows who pays who for what? It is a good idea to investigate Bristol's "friends" as well. You might be shocked at connections.

QUOTED:Mark Sumpter - "How they say that they are not a security firm and beyond the scope of following the state mandated guidelines when placing an individual under arrest is beyond me."

FROM THE ALASKA DEPT OF PUBLIC SAFETY:

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age; not be addicted or dependent on drugs or alcohol; not have any felony convictions or have been involved in any crime preventing ownership or possession of a firearm; be emotionally and mentally stable; and be a U.S. citizen or resident alien. Applicants must have a minimum of eight hours general pre-assignment training. All guards must complete 40 hours in-service training within 180 days of employment. Applicants for an armed guard license must have a firearms training certificate and eight hours of pre-assignment training in the legal use, handling, safety, and maintenance of deadly weapons. Armed guards must re-qualify with a gun annually to maintain an armed license. Applicants with convictions that prevent them from owning or handling a gun will be hired as an unarmed security guard only.

Only people properly licensed in the state of Alaska have the right to effect an arrest unless it is by a PRIVATE citizen acting on their own authority on their own personal property.

I can also tell you the the UCMJ dictates how and what type of employment a member of the active military can participate in and they expressly forbid that members on active duty be a part of local law enforcement. On the same note they take a very dim view where there can be any conflict with the esprit de corps and interaction with civilians that can be deemed inappropriate by enlisted personnel.

If you really want I can dig in to this further for you since you seem lacking on factual arguments.

Oy vey. Alaska's being taken over by the extreme right religious wing and their nutty militias. I'm a member of NRA but this is getting f___ing ridiculous, Alaska.

We need to get Sarah Palin's puppets out of our government. NOW!

I heard through the grape vine that Tony was not going to file charges against Miller and his goons. Is this true? If it is, I am astounded and disappointed. Does he need a lawyer? Does he need a leagal fund? Or does he just need a spine? Sorry...can't help with the later.

That is most certainly Wayne Anthony Ross' Hummer.

Not sure if he still owns it or not, but that's definitely it.

This downtownian/Spenardian would recognize that POS in a New York second.

Attorney Miller seems to be unaware of the laws forbidding active duty military personnel participating in partisan politics. Miller should be indicted for violating this law. What's worse, past commanding officers in this installation allowed active duty soldiers to violate this law. We may need to see if Miller or Palin have any Federal employees working for them, violating the Hatch Act.

I wish people would stop referring to Tony's handcuffing as an arrest. If anything, it should be "arrest" in quotes, or better, illegal detention or for wussies, questionable detention. These goons did not have the authority to arrest anyone. I hope they are put out of business for this and apparently other dicey business practices.
