This just might be one of the most important stories unfolding right now.

There are a few of us in the "new media" who believe that Murdoch and his crew might not have limited their phone hacking to the other side of the pond.

I would certainly not be surprised to learn that there are a few phones belonging to politicians, or media competitors, or sources over here that might have reason to be concerned as well.

Unscrupulous

I am so happy that you posted this.

I completely agree that Rupert's minions have probably done some serious hacking over here. I mean the Bush administration basically rang the bell for it.

Really insidious stuff. I hope everyone is paying attention.

Interesting. David Cameron's ex-communications person used to work for Murdoch at NOTW. Just like the GOP in this country--huh? Newscorp feeds the conservative agenda all over the world.

As an expat living in the UK let me tell you this is huge! It started with celebrities coming forward with the news that their phones have been hacked, and this went on for a couple of months. People were shocked by this, but at the same time general consensus was that it wasn't very worrying as they were celebrities. Now we hear about News of the World hacking into the phones of war widows, murder victims and victims of a terrorist attack! It is absolutely sick and shocking and major advertisers and brands are pulling out of the paper, including the Royal British Legion.
One word about Murdoch wanting to take over Sky News...Sky is already in Fox's pocket! I tend to watch Sky over the BBC and CNN International but every time Sky needs to interview a journalist from the US about a story or whatever they're usually Fox News reporters and they sit right in front of huge Fox News signs during the interviews!

I feel a big part of the blame can be lain at the doorstep of the damn poor example of statecraft the Bush Administration pulled on the American people.

I'm sure Murdock is betting that if Bush got away with extreme invasion of privacy, so can he.

The Murdoch Empire play with and manipulate people's emotions everyday, but to have their tactics exposed of such fashion - of listening in on and erasing leads on a missing girl's voicemail - is stupefying and a horrendous, criminal abuse of a family's critical hours of hope, loss and desperation.

This may be Murdoch's Waterloo, the real kind, not Michele Bachmann's geographical mistake that Fox would rewrite just to make her look competent and not crazy.

I absolutely agree with you. What they have done that we know about is unconscionable. What they have done that we have yet to uncover is bone chilling.

Rupert Murdoch is another person (I use the term lightly) who should be checked for the "Mark of the Beast." Anyone unfamiliar with his far-reaching tentacles should watch "Outfoxed." I think you can download it for free on the internet. Furthermore, it is essential viewing for anyone who buys into the "liberal bias in the news" bullshit. Murdoch owns the largest news conglomerate in the world. Liberal bias my ass! What I really resent about him is the fact that he only gained American citizenship (and oddly, it happened quickly while Mexican immigrants wait 10-15 years for the process) to expand his news holdings. This unAmerican is effectively shaping (misshaping?) American politics with his lies and deceptions.

^ it's beginning to look like the government will take over the news...:<

Labor lawyer, Tom Watson, says James Murdoch (Rupert's son) authorized a 700-pound payment to a victim as long as she signed a non-disclosure statement. Sounds like cover-up to me.

British Labour Party's Leader Demands Inquiry into Murdoch Phone Hacking

I couldn't be happier if this finally brings down Murdoch, but I'm not holding my breath. The lack of coverage on this story here speaks volumes for the hold he still has over all of our corporate media in the U.S. who tend to circle the wagons when one of their own is under attack. I've seen nothing on this story other than some scant coverage on MSNBC. Maybe I missed some of it or maybe that will change sometime soon and there will be more reporting on this, but Uncle Rupert definitely is not topping the headlines here just yet with any reporting I managed to catch.

Calls Grow for Investigation into Murdoch's News of the World Phone-Hacking

While our media in the United States has largely ignored this story, the press overseas has not to say the least. BBC World News not only made this the opening segment on their show that reairs locally here on PBS, but did a follow up segment with as well.

  14. This story is even worse than people realize. Not only did they hack the rich, famous, & newsworthy, they hacked a missing 13yr old's phone!!! They even DELETED messages to make room for more incoming messages so they could get more info for articles! By them deleting messages, it caused the police & her FAMILY to think she was still alive and checking messages.

What is absolutely foul is that her parents gave News of the World an interview in which they mentioned that she was checking her messages and they knew it was THEM but continued anyway.

There is NO limit to what Murdoch will do for power & money.

I think that this could be the beginning of the end for Murdoch. The conduct of his hand picked lieutenants is so repugnant and so contemptuous of the rule of law, that I find it HIGHLY improbable that such arrogant and manipulative tactics aren't also used by Murdoch's henchmen in this country. Maybe even by FauxNews. Given this story, I also am very skeptical that FauxNews isn't actually behind the recent hacking of their twitter account. I mean, seriously, if they are willing to interfere with kidnap/murder investigations of children, everything else is small potatoes, ne-c'est pas?

Murdoch may or may not have had direct knowledge of criminal behavior. That may not help him. If he claims that he was ignorant of the criminal activities in his own organizations, the best spin that Murdoch can possibly put on this is that he is so hopelessly incompetent that he allowed his managers to engage in criminal behavior and he was so clueless and exercised such shoddy management techniques that he was totally unaware of it.

However, the criminal charges might be the LEAST of his worries. If he is not brought down by criminal charges in this matter, he STILL will be faced with the seemingly insurmountable hurdle he will undoubtedly face in civil court as the victims of his phone hacking begin to sue him. By then the police investigation will have uncovered the more unseemly details of either Murdoch’s direct involvement or his sloppy indifferent management that allowed such crimes to occur.

Imagine the impact in a civil trial of murder victim Milly Dowler’s grieving mother on the stand. Add to that all of the other victims who will be lining up to take out their respective pounds of Murdoch’s flesh directly from Murdoch's ass. This roster of potential plaintiffs could include such high profile individuals like Hugh Grant or members of the Royal Family. Could the Windsors loathe Murdoch so much that they'd help take him out?

I actually always thought that it would be lawsuits that brought Murdoch down. However, I had not considered the possibility of criminal charges as well.

If Murdoch doesn’t go to jail, he will be bled dry by the time the lawsuits run their course. Either way, Murdoch's days are winding down.”

New Allegations Accuse News Of The World Of Hacking Into Phones Of War Victims’ Families

And the allegations against News of the World continue to mount. Now, reports allege that Glenn Mulcaire, the private investigator allegedly hired by the paper, had personal information on the families of British servicemen killed while serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. If the allegations are true, this would mean that News of the World reporters intercepted messages meant for the family members of these slain soldiers.

The Times, which is also owned by Murdoch, has reported that five journalists and newspaper executives at the News of the World were slated to be arrested.

In addition, culture secretary Jeremy Hunt is expected to delay his verdict on whether Murdoch’s News Corp. may proceed in its longstanding bid to take full control of British satellite broadcaster BSkyB. His decision has been pushed until September now that the phone hacking scandal has prompted a new wave of submissions — over 100,000 in total — which would take government officials until August 30th at the very earliest to sort through.

Here's Hugh Grant's investigation and take on Murdoch's method of getting "news" - Mr Grant has taken this investigation as a victim and a private citizen. Murdoch and his empire needs to be prosecuted and all the companies that continue advertising in any publication, news channel must be punished.

  29. No doubt these interceptions were known at the highest levels of the Murdoch family - no way would they not know what sources were generating 'substantial' leads for their newspapers in the UK.

If I was an ethically intact journalist at Fox, I'd be re-thinking my career choice about now.

If the Justice Department doesn't starting investigating the actions of Murdoch's empire here in the states for similar actions, they don't deserve to have their jobs.

As of mid-morning, the BBC is reporting that NotW is to be closed in the UK, and the Sun to be expanded to seven day a week coverage. The Beeb's analysts say this is just whitewash by Murdoch, as nothing will really change, and the NotW's employees will simply move to other Murdoch papers.

It would be absurd to assume that he has not hacked into phones and other OS's in the US.

  31. ibwilliamsi9:09 AM

Let there be no doubt that Murdoch was doing this BEFORE the Patriot Act, and it was not limited to listening to messages. They were tapping directly into phone conversations 20 years ago.

Princess Diana's "Squidgygate" tapes were released by "The Sun" which is published by "Newsgroup Newspapers" which is a division of "News International" which is wholly owned by Rupert Murdoch's "News Corporation".

Now let's think about why John Kerry might have given up the election in the middle of the night election night of 2004 when there was such clear and incontrovertible evidence of voter manipulation and fraud in Ohio. If Kerry had won Ohio he would have had the election so why give up? Because someone played a tape to him in the middle of the night that would have been embarrassing to him or someone he cared about. That's why.

  32. These phone taps are disgusting and disturbing. More worrisome to me, though, is the collaboration between Murdoch, his news organizations and politicians on both sides of the pond. We need the media to hold the political establishment accountable not to influence and promote it.

Closing down the News of the World seems like an effort at containment. I want NewsCorp to go down.

Here's a story of concern about Murdoch's Wall Street Journal:
