Latest Herman Cain accuser may be a "game changer." Gee, ya think? Update.

"Big Daddy" Cain in his totally innocent looking pimp hat.
Courtesy of the Des Moines Register:

Herman Cain’s candidacy has reached “a tipping point,” one Iowa conservative leader said Monday, as some Republicans here reacted with distaste to fresh allegations about inappropriate behavior — from a fourth accuser who isn’t anonymous.

The Des Moines Register re-interviewed 15 conservative Iowans who participated in the Iowa Poll two weeks ago, and 11 of them said Sharon Bialek’s detailed allegations about Cain groping her in 1997 are troubling enough to at least make them question the retired restaurant executive’s fitness for the White House.

Cain was 31-year-old Sioux City resident Joe Sandvick’s top choice in the Iowa Poll, but on Monday, Sandvick said the new claims draw the candidate’s character into question “dramatically.”

“If there’s one allegation, that’s one thing. When there’s two, there’s smoke. And when there’s three or four, then you’ve got a full-blown fire,” said Sandvick, a tea party supporter. “Usually if you’ve got that many people coming forward, it’s got to be somewhat true somewhere along the line. They can’t all be in cahoots and say it’s a conspiracy.”

Some of Cain’s Iowa backers, including Pottawattamie County GOP Chairman Jeff Jorgensen, immediately came to Cain’s defense.

But other Iowa conservatives said the fact that Bialek identified herself and gave an on-the-record account of an alleged groping incident is a game-changer.

As predicted having Sharon Bialek now provided a face to go with the allegations against Cain, has made them cut much deeper into his support than they did previously. His chances of recovering from this are very unlikely in my opinion, but don't tell that to the Cain campaign, who have now decided to go after the accuser with both barrels:

In the email, his camp telegraphed the talking points it is likely to make during a previously scheduled 2:30 p.m. interview with ABC News and Yahoo! and a 5 p.m. press conference in Phoenix.

“As Ms. Sharon Bialek has placed herself in the public spotlight through making patently false allegations against Herman Cain, it is only fair to compare her track record alongside Mr. Cain’s,” the campaign wrote in the email. “In stark contrast to Mr. Cain’s four decades spent climbing the corporate ladder rising to the level of CEO at multiple successful business enterprises, Ms. Bialek has taken a far different path. The fact is that Ms. Bialek has had a long and troubled history, from the courts to personal finances – which may help explain why she has come forward 14 years after an alleged incident with Mr. Cain, powered by celebrity attorney and long term Democrat donor Gloria Allred.”

Like I said it is highly doubtful that "Herb" can recover from this, but if by some miracle he manages to stay in the race I think he has just sabotaged any hope he ever had of getting the female vote.

From my experience women do not like an accused sexual predator to attack the character of their victims. And you can bet big money that there are possibly millions of women who are identifying with Ms. Bialek, and hoping that Cain is humiliated and pilloried for what he is accused of doing.

And speaking of perceptions, I just don't think that Cain's new political slogan is doing him any favors either.

(H/T to Great Grey for the graphic.)
(Now I think I finally understand what is behind that creepy smile of his.)

Gee I can hardly wait to see this press conference at five o'clock. You may think he cannot dig himself in any deeper, but I believe that is underestimating Mr. Cain's abilities.

Update: With other women being named I don't think that Cain attempting to smear one of his accusers is going to do him any good whatsoever.

I believe that the anonymous accusers were not taken seriously, not because they wouldn't come forward, but the perception was that the women were probably black. Now that a white woman has come forward, there's no way a paint chip eater would dare allow a black man to touch a white woman.

I figured I'll go there, sure a lot of people are thinking it.

PS, coming from the perspective of a black woman.

I agree that discrediting the accuser can back-fire. I think any of us could probably have a past that could be put together in a damaging way. She seemed to have a lot of self respect to approach Cain for help in getting another job. She was smart enough to show up on her own rather than with her boy friend. He misread feminism as being available.

And as my daughter and I said to my husband last night while watching the news reports, contrary to the idea that opportunistic women just love going public with these kinds of accusations - they don't, by and large.

Most women want to put this kind of thing behind them, they don't press charges or pursue any kind of justice. I believe this lady, regardless of her bio. She said she just wants the guy to come clean. I can imagine there are probably others out there who are privately applauding her courage.

This is usually a behavior pattern, and obviously here there is mounting evidence that it was. I agree with the guy when he says this cannot be a conspiracy. I do believe the initial leaks may have come from within Cain's own party, but now the horses are out of the barn, and that may have been their intent all along.

  9. My best guess: he will withdraw, he has to, he's toast. As it seems a pattern with him, likely more 'incidents' will come to light if he stays in. He'll say the false and unscrupulous attacks on him are hurting his beloved wife and to spare her he must step aside. Noble, you know.

Men like him do not change. Once a creep, always a creep. Some research has decided that this type of behavior is hereditary, just like alcoholism. Tey found thst men who run aroud on their wives sometimes have sons who do the same thing. A leopard does not change their spots. Besides, who wants a president who has to constantly deny harrassing women? A superintendant from the place I worked at got two girls pregnant when he was in military school, was expelled. He married, had kids and then a string of affairs with women from work. One woman finally got tired of his advances, and got him on tape threatening her job, unless she "went out" with him. The guy had been with the company many, many years and was next in line for the top job, he was fired.

Sarah Palin and her stupidity set the bar so low that Perry, Bachman, and Cain are out there, still spouting nothing but nonsense.

Why even waste time on any of them.

They aren't the candidates, they are the clowns for entertainment.

The guy admitted years ago that the Restaurant Association settled claims against him.

I didn't think this woman should have gone out with him once he upgraded her hotel room. A suite? Should have set off alarm bells. Fun and games time. Why go out to dinner. She claims she thought it was her boy friend who upgraded her room.

His mistake, he was crude and direct.

He thought he had a winner.

Rush even had fun mispronouncing Sharon Bialek's name to Bye-a-Lick. How utterly reprehensible. I hope the whole bunch of them find that they have major permanent ball rot.

Back in the 1960s, when I was "coming up," I can recall at least three times that I was hit on or outright propositioned by men in power positions; men who held my career in their hands. However, that was all that was mine that they held in their hands. Such happenings were rampant back in those days. Especially for women who wanted to climb the corporate ladder. I had to sit back and watch women who did give it up move past me. At the time I was resentful; now I'm grateful that I didn't sell my body and soul to get ahead.

I hate Herb Cain with the fire of a thousand nuns.

I don't see how Cain can recover, either. One thing is certain--he will never even be the GOP nominee, much less president. His defenders like that obese toad AKA Rush Limbaugh and Mann Coulter can defend him till the cows come home. All they've succeeded in doing is making themselves look more idiotic while doing Cain no favors. They are the women who will say she was asking for it by dressing how she does or acting a certain way or even just meeting with him. These are also the kind of people who will say that there is no such thing as sexual abuse, the victim is just trying to get money. I have relatives who insist that there is no abuse of children by priests and bishops, the accusers just want to get rich. There really is a lower class of people who have a strong need to keep abusers and criminals in a position of power. I do not understand it.

Just because hats like Cain's are not worn in your community by respectable citizens, and even if white made Blacksploitation films dressed all pimp characters in them that =/= everyone who wears one is a pimp.

It's half an hour before Cain's presser, so I'm going to get my prediction in now.

He will not only deny his latest accuser's allegation of what amounts to sexual assault, and instead turn the tables and claim that she tried to seduce him to try to get him to give her a job, but he rejected her.

He'll claim she made it up to hurt him since he rejected her advances. He'll claim that she is motivated to sell her story and didn't say anything about it 14 years ago because it didn't happen. Hence, people should take his word for it. And it will work for those who are predisposed to believe him. Again, he'll claim to be the victim of a vindicative, self-serving female.

He will have to come at it with an attack on his accuser putting her in the worst-possible but plausible light. If not, he's just an unindicted felon. Of course, his earlier denials and poor recollection of large payments to other accusers belie any denial he will make now.

Sure, blame the woman."Boys will be boys" ,huh?

Grow up.A professional person should and would expect another professional person to act like one.I was a PitBoss at a casino with a shift manager who always seemed to find the woman to target for his advances, those with problems at home, money problems who could not afford to lose their jobs, those with an after work drinking problem he would happen to run into and ply with alcohol.I like to think I helped a few after I confronted him the week before his wedding with the news that if he did not leave my friend alone, his new wife 9 {a cocktail waitress he formerly hit on)would be informed of the text messages demanding blow jobs after work.He did not bother her again after that, but the damage was done to her self esteem and her sobriety. It took her years to put herself back together. She lost her job,her husband, and her son suffered through the losses with her.Now she is married, sober 4 years, and ok ,but she says she could never have the courage to come forward and tell her story. It would bring it all back from where she locked it away in her mind.

Just because these women were strong enough to rebuff Cain and his sleaze, you don't realize the number of women who felt as though they had no choice,or were maybe flattered at first and thought they were the only one,or were too vulnerable at the time to resist. Those women will not, cannot come forward. The effect on their lives was and is and would be too devastating. how do I know all of this about how they feel? From my friend,of course, but also from my younger years when I was that vulnerable single mother target working in a restaurant.I wasn't always a tough old biddy.I am now,but I could never tell those things to anyone that I did to keep my job.

While the accusations are disturbing enough, they will never be provable beyond a reasonable doubt. That said, the whole way he has approached this, and repeatedly lied makes me think there is some validity to the accusations. What bothered me most about this story was this quote from Jimmy Kimmel last night: “She said, the things that woman described that doesn’t even sound like you, and I’ve known you for 45 years. My own wife said that I wouldn’t do anything as SILLY as what that lady was talking about because she does know me. I’ve been married for 43 years to the same woman and I’m proud of it,” he said. It is what is said in these unscripted interviews that is so telling, and the fact that attempted sexual assault (way beyond a mere comment) was SILLY, not disgusting, awful, repugnant, or any other seriously negative description makes me think he does not think it would be a serious action, and thus it is now more likely in my mind that he did do this or something similar to someone else. This quote needs to be published more because it is telling of his state of mind on the issue.

After flatly denying allegations of sexual harassment, the 2012 hopeful said more women may come forward with accusations—not that he has any knowledge of them, of course.

The Herman Cain saga continues. On 'Piers Morgan Tonight,' hours after saying that Cain allegedly sexually assaulted her, Sharon Bialek said the 2012 hopeful ‘knows what happened.’

I know you didn't mean anything by it, but please don't say "the women refused to come forward." The women weren't ALLOWED to come forward.

  57. Oh noes, maybe Herb needs a visit from South Park's Sexual Harassment Panda.

Looks like he missed sensitivity training

What a douche...Herb is screwed when this Karen woman has her presser tomorrow.

BTW, my African American father in law wears a goofy hat like Herb, and we make fun of it and call it a pimp hat all the time. Maybe it's a southern thing, popular with men of their generation, he's originally from Mississippi . Whatever it is it's ugly.

Eh, Iowans are telling the media that they WERE going to vote for Cain but that, now, they're not. My take, Iowans who were telling the media that they WERE going to vote for Cain were LYING about voting for Cain in the first place....

Only question is, who's the next NotMitt going to be????? Santorum? Are we going to circle back around to Bachmann? Can Perry have a resurrection? Can the GOP go so low as to consider Santorum, the frothy choice? Or...will Ron Paul finally get the...not really the respect he deserves, because the respect he deserves would be a pie in the face...but you get the picture...

Or, are they REALLY going to go for FlipFlop "I'm not even telling the truth about my first name" Mittens, perpetual presidential candidate and bearer of magic underpants? You know, I saw a poll today that said that 40 percent of Americans wouldn't trust a Mormon as president...So, basically, to win, Romney has to get 90 percent of the voters who WOULD support a Mormon for president, or try to convince some of the NONMormon voters that his magic underpants could do a better job steering the US economy than he did with the Massachusetts one. (MA, btw, was at the bottom on job creation when Mittens was governor.)

It is too early to make an evaluation on this one,but if Cain had been carrying on a serious, campaign filled with knowledge and showing wisdom (not being a Repo talking head)instead of supplying comic relief, purposefully, to a group that already is, not purposefully, a bunch of clowns, he would stand a better chance of surviving.

Two of the things that helped Clinton survive is that he was a pretty good President, and the Starr chamber went too far.

Cain doesn't have a track record as a successful populist politician or civic do gooder.
His fall back position is anger and smart assery. Going from fictional Sancho Panza to real Sarah Palin in 24 hours is just too big a switch for the pubic to accept.

    Won't work Herb.

Gryphen you are right that women will have reason to empathize with a woman victim, but will also quickly turn their backs on bogus claimants, for the same exact reason that they show empathy for the real ones. (See Sarah Palin, Monica Lewinsky and her woman gossip buddy whose name I have forgotten. Even Rosemary Woods received no moral from other women.

  63. This woman’s financial and legal history has nothing to do with this accusation about sexual harassment. The Cain people are blowing smoke to influence the public. Lots of people have paternity cases and lots of people have bankruptcies now. This is totally irrelevant information being spread to discredit her and this is why people don’t come forward with information, they know they will be smeared in the media. Cain has enough money behind him to do just about anything. It appears to me the reason these women who have accused Cain of sexual misconduct are coming forward is they have contacted each other and feel stronger due to support. This is the kind of courage we could have used when it came to Sarah Palin running for governor. Lots of women have had these experiences no matter what kind of job they have and are sick of this kind of abuse being swept under the table. Psychopathic men have sex with lots of women and then abandon them and are always searching for their next conquest. They leave a wake of women who have complained about their behavior, been bullied and run off from jobs for it or women who have been discredited for complaining. This is a common issue with police officers and has been for decades. The women who go to their superiors are often labeled as crazy or prostitutes or both. This case demonstrates how women are still treated in this country and how slow things are to change. That creepy expression on Cains face is not smiling, it‘s leering.

Herman "EXCUSE ME! EXCUSE ME! Cain is the victim here. The Mainstream Liberal Media, The Democrat Machine, The other contenders advisers. The funniest part was when he attacked Alred as a Democrat who has an Agenda against Republicans. Ehhhh She was the one who went after Anthony Weiner, a democrat. Google is your friend, Herbie.

I'm disgusted with how they're going after the victims. And Rush is an Asshat hemmorroid for attacking not only her, her last name, but also her son. Calling him a Douchebag is a complement.

Conservatives love when someone gets caught, does a mea culpa, sheds a few tears, and repents to Jesus while consulting a minister. Herman jumped the shark big time, and he's chasing his tail. He should have consulted Sarah of Warsiller for advice before opening his mouth.

Women are going to turn on him in droves. His arrogance and ego while denying the allegations doesn't wash when there's a face attatched to the victim. And for the record, this isn't sexual harrassment, it's assault.

  65. I'm remembering Sarah Palin during the campaign being asked by a reporter to comment on the release of the Troopergate ethics report which said she was guilty of ethics violations. She smilingly replied, "I'm so glad I was cleared of ethics violations"(paraphrased).

Will Herman Cain do the same thing Sarah did after Karan Kraushaar appears publicly? I can't wait to hear what she has to say.

I worked at a racetrack in suburban Chicago and one of the married department managers began sexually harassing several women he supervised within weeks of his hiring.

He even threatened their jobs if they didn't comply. When it was brought to my attention (HR contact), I brought it to my boss. Suffice it to say, the harasser is still on the payroll and I'm not and the harassment of the women who remain there still continues.

It really is a boys' club out there still...

Um...no. And if you think sexual harassment is confined to the workplace you must be a man.
