House Speaker John Boehner caves on payroll tax cut extension. Oh this is a Merry Christmas!

Visit for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

Courtesy of MSNBC:

Boehner said in statement he and Reid "reached an agreement that will ensure taxes do not increase for working families on January 1 while ensuring that a complex new reporting burden is not unintentionally imposed on small business job creators."

He said the Senate "will join the House in immediately appointing conferees, with instructions to reach agreement in the weeks ahead on a full-year payroll tax extension. We will ask the House and Senate to approve this agreement by unanimous consent before Christmas.”

Answering a reporter's question at a press conference Thursday afternoon, Boehner said he did not know if there would be unanimous consent to the accord from all the Republican House members, but said he would bring the House members back to Washington next week for a vote, if it proves to be necessary.

In a statement released by the White House, President Barack Obama said, "This is good news, just in time for the holidays. This is the right thing to do to strengthen our families, grow our economy, and create new jobs."

Man when was the last time you saw a man as completely beaten down as John Boehner?

The guy is being held hostage by the Teabaggers and he is getting his ass handed to him by all sides.

I am actually surprised he did not break down.  He really looked like he was about to a few times.

This is yet ANOTHER victory for President Obama and the Democrats, and a very decisive one at that.

  1. Anonymous2:43 PM

The GOP are ridiculous & will be held accountable in 2012. Mark my words.

  2. Anonymous2:56 PM

How stupid is our President. What is the POINT of TWO FREAKING MONTHS OF TAX CUTS???

The gop wanted a ONE YEAR extension.

Eff you democrats and Obama. The mere passing of the bill canceled out its worth.

  3. Orange Man is a ASS! And you should see the picture of him on HP...he looks like he just FINISHED crying! What an embarrassment!

  4. Anonymous3:08 PM

F you dems. Businesses need the year long extension. NOT this short term pointless BS.

  5. Anonymous3:13 PM

Boehner should be the target of an intervention. He seriously needs rehab for his drinking problem. No adult cries at the drop of a hat the way he does. The rest of the gop needs to GROW UP. They act like kindergarten children. Any working class person who votes repub. needs a mental evaluation. They concern themselves with only the wealthy. Just saw Gingrich and all his chins on the news. He is such a pompous, fat, narcissistic troll.

  6. Anonymous3:14 PM

Hey, Orange Weeping Man...just for you, @sshole...another win for Obama!

Oh, and Queenie, this is for you too..

  7. Anonymous3:20 PM

I would love to have been sitting in an easy chair in his office watching the sweat pour off him. What an arrogant fool

  8. Anonymous3:22 PM

The only other reaction was to cause taxes to increase. And even though their true leader, Grover, told them it really wasn't a tax increase to let a temporary decrease expire...

Let's all remember this when they insist they MUST keep the temporary cut for the wealthy to expire.

  9. Anonymous3:27 PM

I have to say this, it was a victory for Boehner too. I actually dislike him somewhat less than the others, I get this sense that he and Obama and Reid could work decently together, were it not for the hostage taking methods of the Tea Party. I perceive at times that he is genuinely distressed when things go grid lock. And when he comes out with some sort of "muscular" complaint during the proceedings, I really don't believe him, it sounds forced, I think he is just making noise because he "has to." I think he has been in a worse place through all of this than Reid and Obama.

  10. Anonymous3:27 PM

"The GOP are ridiculous & will be held accountable in 2012."

    I second that.

    Obama/Biden 2012
and the House and 60 in the Senate!

  11. Anonymous3:34 PM

I agree with you at 2:43! And, I think President Obama will be re-elected! Especially after watching this Repub primary. All I can do is shake my head at the majority of their candidates. The only one that has stood out to me is Huntsman and he has stayed at the bottom of their polls.

  12. Anonymous3:39 PM

Cut the guy some slack. He has to be in this gridlock asking himself if this is how he wants tp spend his life.

  13. Anonymous3:42 PM

So, because of democrats, we have a two month extension and NOT a year long extension as republicans wanted. PERFECT

    I hate this BTW.

  14. angela3:53 PM

    Anon 2:56
You are kind of an ass and don't get it--do you?

  15. Anonymous3:55 PM

Since when has the decency troll started using vulgar curse words to express themselves?

And you wonder why you are called a hypocrite?

  16. Anonymous3:59 PM

Aw...@2:56 rewrites history for us. Too bad the GOP sucks. We feel for you. Go complain to Mitch (he pulls Orange Man's strings), not the Pres.

  17. Anonymous4:06 PM

@2:56 GRANNY GRIFTER DIRTY WIG is having a HISSY FIT. Get over it. You don't have a clue.

  18. Kimosabe4:10 PM

I'm ambivilent about this temporary payroll tax cut. Whenever a tax cut is about to expire, the RWNJs spin it into a tax "increase", and the cut is retained, driving us deeper into debt. Ambivilent, because this kind of tax cut is the right the right thing to do in a recession.

  19. Anonymous4:13 PM

Boehner (actually was Bohner before the addition of the "e"), is from my home state and is known for his alcoholism and over use of a tanning bed. He cries at the drop if a hat, his face looks bloated from all the alcohol, just look at his eyes.

  20. Anonymous4:14 PM

Anon @2:56. You really don't follow politics do you?

Get educated on what's going on in Washington before you shout out inane comments.

  21. Anonymous4:15 PM

2:56 - the House only pretended to offer a year extension at the expense of our environment so they could hand over the midsection of the country to Big Oil for the XL Pipeline.

I suggest you do some research. You think the oil spills in Alaska and the Gulf were disastrous? Wait until the largest aquifer in the country becomes victim to a pipeline like that - not to mention the thousands of people whose property could be seized in the name of progress.

Two months buys our President time to review and turn down the pipeline. Plus it ensures that people on Medicare can get medical treatment from physicians who might refuse treatment because they could not get paid.

If you were unemployed and dependent upon unemployment insurance, you could not say this is a problem. It keeps food on the table and roof over many people's families.

Our President is not stupid. He just knows when to step back and buy time to get a better deal and yet make sure that the American people can get through the holidays.

Without this temporary deal, even business would suffer. BTW, many states require payment of the second half of personal property taxes by the end of the year. States need money that will come from this temporary agreement.

I think you will be eating your words before the next 60 days are over. At least I hope so - please don't choke on them.

BTW, Happy Holidays, and eff you and your petty opinions.

  22. Anonymous4:16 PM

Hi 3:08 - didn't you just post as 2:56 - did it take you 12 minutes to find all the right keys to hit?

A typing class could be quite beneficial, you know. You could amp up how many disgusting posts you make.

  23. Caveman want to live. Caveman know which side cave bread is cave-buttered on.

  24. Gasman4:24 PM

Bravo, Mr. President. Now, why not make bitch slapping Boehner part of your daily routine?

    Anon @ 2:56,
Fuck you. Boehner and the teabaggers wanted simply to throw a pissy fit. If they had really wanted a one year extension from the start how come McConnell wasn't in on their little secret?

Boehner got clotheslined by his teabaggers and then he got publicly bitch slapped by the president.

And you exposed yourself as a fucking moron.

    Merry Christmas, asshole.

  25. Anonymous4:24 PM

Guess Sara must have gotten a couple of talking points from someone and is posting them here. The two month extension was a BIPARTISAN agreement by the Senate - you might want to look at the vote total Sara before you slobber out your shit. This would have been a year agreement except Boner and Cantor insisted on the poison pills that the White House wasn't going to accept. What does the boondoggle known as a pipeline to hell have to do with the extension of a tax cut? NOT A DAMN THING but the House insisted on it and it would have been vetoed if it came to the WH with a year on it. So the Senate actually sniffed the air and decided not to fuck the rest of the population and passed the two month extension. SO Sara, why don't you sign off and go be with your family or have they abandoned you once and for all? Where is toad these days btw? Hasn't been a toad sighting for quite some time. Was it when he left your book promotion mid-tour? Was it Glen Rice or Joe's book? Hmmm

"The gop wanted a ONE YEAR extension."

I accept that undereducated and uninformed trolls sometimes pollute IM, but still their level of abject stupidity is astounding.

The repugs/teabaggers did not/do not want to extend any type of benefits to average Americans, but this was a deal worked out in the Senate so that their taxes would not go up and unemployment benefits would not go down just after the start of the New Year.

The President and Democrats DID ask for a one year extension but the teabaggers fought this so the two month extension was suggested.

You, Anonymous @2:56 pm, should care more about yourself than to remain ignorant. After all, the google is free. If you don't know how to use it, I'm sure some pre-school kid at the local library would be happy to assist you.

The gop wanted a ONE YEAR extension.

    Is this true?

  29. Anonymous4:33 PM

It looks like the Koch-Bros-financed "stupid people's rebellion" of 2010 is well on its way to being as irrelevant after 2012 as their stupid alpha female has rendered herself to be already. All their touted flag bearers are in political trouble and still sinking. In the latest Gallup, a record low 11% (probably TeaBaKKKers) approve of Congress, and in a reversal from a year ago (in the pre-TeabaKKKer days) - the Dems now enjoy more approval than do the Repubs. Thanks, Koch Bros, we couldn't have done it w/out you and the pile of money you spent to send enough stupid people to Washington to make the Dems look more appealing and smarter than they deserve. (I'd think by now you'd have figured out that if you want to fuck the Democrats, all you have to do is donate to the DNC and sit back and laugh.) So, to you Koch Bros, and Dick Armey, and the rest of the army of dicks who helped make the Republican party both a national and global laughing stock (and that especially applies to you, Sarah), please accept my thanks and my heartfelt Merry Christmyth. And to the rest of you, a Sunny Solstice and Happy Holidays.

  30. Anonymous4:35 PM

    OMG! Laughing. My. Ass. OFF.

Whoever is doing these screen captures is spot on! The GOP clown car is priceless, but Sarah shots are superior frozen moments of her mental health exposed. Especially around the mouth. LOVE this site! G-man, I'd be thrilled to see this on the blogroll, but nevertheless it's now on my daily bookmarked list.

The Decency a.k.a. Fairy Tale Troll is having an immature meltdown, and admits that she doesn't understand the payroll tax issue. Merry Christmas indeed!!!

  32. Anne In DC4:42 PM

In case anyone thinking the GOP representatives were on the right side of this issue, please note that they didn't want any kind of tax payroll cut extension in the first place. When they DID claim they wanted the one-year extension, they wanted to load the legislation with all kinds of "poison pills" like firing 200,000 federal workers, freezing the salaries of the federal workers, or practically eliminating unemployment benefits by reducing the period for them by 40 weeks. So, they don't deserve any credit because their idea of paying for important legislation is making draconian cuts in critical services while continuing to support endless tax cuts for the wealthy.

  33. DetroitSam4:44 PM

    Anonymous @3:08 PM

"F you dems. Businesses need the year long extension. NOT this short term pointless BS."

    Are you really this stupid?

    Guess go.

The President and Democrats DID ask for a one year extension but the teabaggers fought this so the compromise with the Senate teabaggers was a two month extension.

The idea beinng that average citizens would not see a increase in taxes and loss of unemployment benefits just after the New Year.

For the life of me, I just can't grasph that so many ignorant people, such as you, care so little about yourselves as to allow yourself to remain ignorant in light of the vast amount of information available to those to want to become informed.

Among your kind, knowledge is probably frowned upon so I doubt you will be learning how to use the google.

  34. Anonymous4:54 PM

The question begs.....when FAUX interviews Queenie over her opinion on this, will she be wearing fake headband felt reindeer antlers tall enough to clear the wig of choice? Star Of David hanging off the left antler, cross off the right?? It WOULD fit right in with the Wal-Mart tree and fake hell in the fireplace....

Extra credit, #arah? Bring back Elmo. Rill Amerikuns await you.

  35. Anonymous4:57 PM

Another Republican jerk that I'll wager doesn't hold the same position in the House next go around. I think he is an alcoholic!

  36. Anonymous5:00 PM

Except it's not really the victory you think it is.

Just what do you think funds Social Security?

    Payroll taxes.

That's why it's so ironic that Repugs didn't come up with the plan themselves.

It proves how much they hate Obama, though - even when he hands them a tax cut that WILL hurt the middle class, they have to be forced to accept it.

Obama is the best Republican Democratic president ever.

  37. Anonymous5:21 PM

    @2:56 PM

Fuck you, and the rest of you right-wing retards! You know damn well it was the democrats that wanted a year-long extension, but the teatards were against it! The senate democrats couldn't have passed the two month extension with without republican votes, and it passed in the senate 89-10! Congress is going to come back and work on the year long extension after the fucking holidays, then the tea-fuckers will fuck that up, too! You don't give a shit about tax cuts for businesses! You're just here bitching, because you're fucking mad that you dumb motherfuckers lost this round!

  38. Anonymous5:25 PM

The gop wanted a ONE YEAR extension.

    Is this true?

    @4:31 PM

No, it's not true. The democrats wanted the year-long extension, but had to settle for the two-month extension, thanks to the GOP. Please keep up.

  39. Anonymous5:27 PM

Speaking of GOP hypocrisy at it's finest, have you heard about this? And the letter from the gay community is truly priceless in it's snarkocity:

    I hate this BTW.

    @3:42 PM

No, "we" have a two month extension and not a year long extension, because Mitch McConnell, and the rest of the GOP assholes in the senate, wouldn't agree to the year-long extension the democrats wanted. PERFECT.

Fixed it for you. Your welcome.

P.S., You forgot to say "eff you democrats and Obama," in your second post, 3:42 PM (A.K.A. 2:56 PM.).

  41. Anonymous5:59 PM

    @5:00 PM

The social security lie has been debunked, over, and over, again. Social security will be fine. You're just a pissed off fire-bagger, who's mad because it didn't blow up in President Obama's face (this time) the way you wanted it to.

Or, maybe you're just one the usual bigots who can never give the black president credit for ANYTHING. Know how I can tell? Because the FIRST thing bigots often say is something like: "Except it's not really the victory you think it is." Because the bigots are always so concerned about whether or not the president has really won a "victory," or not, rather than their only "concern" being about whether he is hurting social security, or whatever they are complaining about at the moment.

Right now, you and the troll(s) are on my top list for the best whiney little ASSHOLES leaving comments on this post ever!

Before I go: Fuck you, crybaby!

  42. Anonymous6:07 PM

    Anon 5:00

Another RWNJ lie. The law enacted last year that will be continued for 2 months clearly states that the shortfall into SS be made out of the general fund.

If you want to get angry, consider show much more revenue a surtax on millionaires - less than 20,000 Americans - would bring into the general fund. That was how the President wanted to pay for this extension.

Remain ignorant, but please don't vote. Your ignorance only hurts you, except when you vote against the rest of Americans interests.

  43. Anonymous6:50 PM

GOOD! That means KEYSTONE XL is DEAD!!!
Another pipeline to no ware by trans Canada...
The first being Sarah's pipeline to no-where!

  44. Anonymous6:54 PM

Hey GOP, you can't say he didn't warn ya...

    Loved it, love him!

  45. Anonymous7:43 PM

I find the republican sympathizers comments to be typical of these people. They say sure we want the same thing as you do but ONLY IF you add these terrible things which will make the few rich while it will end up biting the rest of us on our ass. That Keystone pipeline you traitors want so badly, it will not be pushing light or heavy oil thru it. They want it to send bitumen slurry an extremely thick thing which is cooked to get the petroleum products out of it. It is some really crappy stuff, toxic, carcenogenic, and for every gallon you produce of this stuff you need to pollute 3 gallons of water. Sounds like great stuff. LOL NOT! So try again but tell us about the the downside you want us all to suffer when your postion is presented.

  46. Anonymous8:45 PM

    Well Played, Mr President!

Boehner was forced to backtrack because a) his tan was fading b) he sucks corndogs when it comes to leadership c) President Obama put his foot down, stayed in Washington to do the work for the middle class d) Boehner, Cantor, and the entire GOP house have no CLUE how bad the visuals of their whinefest played out with the middle class. and e) The democrats wouldn't budge a centimeter this time.

Boehner, of all people, should realize you can't change horses in mid-stream and ever be taken seriously again. You know you're royally screwed, when Seniletor Mc Cain chimes in AND makes sense.

Well Played, Mr President. You let them paint themselves into a corner, you sacrificed your vacation, got some shopping in, and turned the tide.

To the trolls on this thread. Two months, Two men, President Obama, Speaker Boner - which is going to have the unanimous support of his entire party in sixty days?

Kiss the pipeline goodbye, it was a disaster of an idea to begin with, and Obama knew it.

  47. Anonymous9:12 PM

I don't believe anyone who reads or comments to this blog, doesn't rely on a PAYCHECK as income.

So, to hear from ANYONE that they are not relieved to see the ridiculous position the Republicans tried to push, cave in, means only one of two things:

    They are outright liars...

or, they are outright STUPID, and have been brainwashed by the Fox and others into pushing for legislation that goes against their own interests and needs.

The super rich in America are doing VERY well, and don't need you to come out of your mobile homes to cry out for them to get even better treatment.

Wise UP, for cryin' out loud.

  48. Anonymous12:58 AM

Anon 2:56, oy vay, you are a low information voter. You have no clue what is going on. The GOP didn't only want a one year extension! They were trying to stick many unrelated things into the bill. Try reading from various sources before attacking and making such uninformed statements. It's obvious you have no idea what each side wanted!!

  49. Anonymous1:03 AM

God our troll is such a simpleton! Are all GOP voters so clueless and uninformed? It's frightening!!

  50. A little OT since the Republicans caved, but have you seen the
    President's twitter feed -
    what #40dollars means to you
(I don't tweet but think that's right, came from this article at Politico

There were many reasons I voted for Obama, and will vote for him again, but one of the top 3 was that I believed the man, who was raised by a single mom, and educated through scholarships, grants and loans, could understand how America is for me,better than the rich man who couldn't keep track of how many houses and cars he owned.
Obama is a millionaire now, due to his books, but he has a much firmer grasp on most American's everyday life than ANY of the
    Republicans out there...

Happy Holidays to you all, and when you see your family and friends this season, remind them the biggest gift we can give each other this year is to

  51. Randall3:30 AM

You know what? FUCK John Boehner. And fuck every one of those sons-a-bitches on both sides that are more caught up in playing politics than they are in doing the job they were elected to do.

Conferees to do the job in place of the people we elected to do the job?

Fuck those worthless assholes. Every God-damned one of 'em needs to be voted out and sent home.

Nice try, but you are wrong.

The payroll tax cut does not affect the solvency of the SS fund. The law specifically requires the difference to be made up from the general fund. And yes, it has been from the beginning.

The point to argue is where will revenues come from to replenish the general fund. And, sorry, there are clear and obvious differences between the Democratic President and the Republicans on how revenues should b eraised.

President Obamais an excellent Democratic president considering the reflexive opposition from the extremists on both sides.

  53. Anonymous7:15 AM

This is not a payroll tax cut. This is a SUSPENSION of the Social Security tax - which is paving the way for the destruction of Social Security.

BOTH the repugs and the dems SUCK for doing this to Social Security.
