House Speaker John Boehner caves on payroll tax cut extension. Oh this is a Merry Christmas!

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

Courtesy of MSNBC:

Boehner said in statement he and Reid "reached an agreement that will ensure taxes do not increase for working families on January 1 while ensuring that a complex new reporting burden is not unintentionally imposed on small business job creators."

He said the Senate "will join the House in immediately appointing conferees, with instructions to reach agreement in the weeks ahead on a full-year payroll tax extension. We will ask the House and Senate to approve this agreement by unanimous consent before Christmas.”

Answering a reporter's question at a press conference Thursday afternoon, Boehner said he did not know if there would be unanimous consent to the accord from all the Republican House members, but said he would bring the House members back to Washington next week for a vote, if it proves to be necessary.

In a statement released by the White House, President Barack Obama said, "This is good news, just in time for the holidays. This is the right thing to do to strengthen our families, grow our economy, and create new jobs."

Man when was the last time you saw a man as completely beaten down as John Boehner?

The guy is being held hostage by the Teabaggers and he is getting his ass handed to him by all sides.

I am actually surprised he did not break down.  He really looked like he was about to a few times.

This is yet ANOTHER victory for President Obama and the Democrats, and a very decisive one at that.

Boehner should be the target of an intervention. He seriously needs rehab for his drinking problem. No adult cries at the drop of a hat the way he does. The rest of the gop needs to GROW UP. They act like kindergarten children. Any working class person who votes repub. needs a mental evaluation. They concern themselves with only the wealthy. Just saw Gingrich and all his chins on the news. He is such a pompous, fat, narcissistic troll.

The only other reaction was to cause taxes to increase. And even though their true leader, Grover, told them it really wasn't a tax increase to let a temporary decrease expire...

Let's all remember this when they insist they MUST keep the temporary cut for the wealthy to expire.

I have to say this, it was a victory for Boehner too. I actually dislike him somewhat less than the others, I get this sense that he and Obama and Reid could work decently together, were it not for the hostage taking methods of the Tea Party. I perceive at times that he is genuinely distressed when things go grid lock. And when he comes out with some sort of "muscular" complaint during the proceedings, I really don't believe him, it sounds forced, I think he is just making noise because he "has to." I think he has been in a worse place through all of this than Reid and Obama.

I'm ambivilent about this temporary payroll tax cut. Whenever a tax cut is about to expire, the RWNJs spin it into a tax "increase", and the cut is retained, driving us deeper into debt. Ambivilent, because this kind of tax cut is the right the right thing to do in a recession.

2:56 - the House only pretended to offer a year extension at the expense of our environment so they could hand over the midsection of the country to Big Oil for the XL Pipeline.

I suggest you do some research. You think the oil spills in Alaska and the Gulf were disastrous? Wait until the largest aquifer in the country becomes victim to a pipeline like that - not to mention the thousands of people whose property could be seized in the name of progress.

Two months buys our President time to review and turn down the pipeline. Plus it ensures that people on Medicare can get medical treatment from physicians who might refuse treatment because they could not get paid.

If you were unemployed and dependent upon unemployment insurance, you could not say this is a problem. It keeps food on the table and roof over many people's families.

Our President is not stupid. He just knows when to step back and buy time to get a better deal and yet make sure that the American people can get through the holidays.

Without this temporary deal, even business would suffer. BTW, many states require payment of the second half of personal property taxes by the end of the year. States need money that will come from this temporary agreement.

I think you will be eating your words before the next 60 days are over. At least I hope so - please don't choke on them.

BTW, Happy Holidays, and eff you and your petty opinions.

Guess Sara must have gotten a couple of talking points from someone and is posting them here. The two month extension was a BIPARTISAN agreement by the Senate - you might want to look at the vote total Sara before you slobber out your shit. This would have been a year agreement except Boner and Cantor insisted on the poison pills that the White House wasn't going to accept. What does the boondoggle known as a pipeline to hell have to do with the extension of a tax cut? NOT A DAMN THING but the House insisted on it and it would have been vetoed if it came to the WH with a year on it. So the Senate actually sniffed the air and decided not to fuck the rest of the population and passed the two month extension. SO Sara, why don't you sign off and go be with your family or have they abandoned you once and for all? Where is toad these days btw? Hasn't been a toad sighting for quite some time. Was it when he left your book promotion mid-tour? Was it Glen Rice or Joe's book? Hmmm

I accept that undereducated and uninformed trolls sometimes pollute IM, but still their level of abject stupidity is astounding.

The repugs/teabaggers did not/do not want to extend any type of benefits to average Americans, but this was a deal worked out in the Senate so that their taxes would not go up and unemployment benefits would not go down just after the start of the New Year.

The President and Democrats DID ask for a one year extension but the teabaggers fought this so the two month extension was suggested.

All their touted flag bearers are in political trouble and still sinking. In the latest Gallup, a record low 11% (probably TeaBaKKKers) approve of Congress, and in a reversal from a year ago (in the pre-TeabaKKKer days) - the Dems now enjoy more approval than do the Repubs. Thanks, Koch Bros, we couldn't have done it w/out you and the pile of money you spent to send enough stupid people to Washington to make the Dems look more appealing and smarter than they deserve. (I'd think by now you'd have figured out that if you want to fuck the Democrats, all you have to do is donate to the DNC and sit back and laugh.) In case anyone thinking the GOP representatives were on the right side of this issue, please note that they didn't want any kind of tax payroll cut extension in the first place. When they DID claim they wanted the one-year extension, they wanted to load the legislation with all kinds of "poison pills" like firing 200,000 federal workers, freezing the salaries of the federal workers, or practically eliminating unemployment benefits by reducing the period for them by 40 weeks. So, they don't deserve any credit because their idea of paying for important legislation is making draconian cuts in critical services while continuing to support endless tax cuts for the wealthy.

If you want to get angry, consider show much more revenue a surtax on millionaires - less than 20,000 Americans - would bring into the general fund. That was how the President wanted to pay for this extension.

Nice try, but you are wrong.

The payroll tax cut does not affect the solvency of the SS fund. The law specifically requires the difference to be made up from the general fund. And yes, it has been from the beginning.

The point to argue is where will revenues come from to replenish the general fund. And, sorry, there are clear and obvious differences between the Democratic President and the Republicans on how revenues should b eraised.

President Obamais an excellent Democratic president considering the reflexive opposition from the extremists on both sides.
