Seeking the Palin endorsement, the very definition of political desperation.

Courtesy of CBS News:

After leaving an indelible mark on the 2010 midterm elections, Palin has had a minimal impact thus far in this cycle. But one presidential candidate is hoping that the Mama Grizzly is about to come out of hibernation.

Despite the deeply held maxim that endorsements are overrated, Newt Gingrich and his senior aides are increasingly hopeful of gaining Palin's support, which could mark a significant turn in the Republican nominating fight.

In a Washington Post poll released last week, 23 percent of registered Republicans and GOP-leaning independents nationwide said that an endorsement by Palin would make them more likely to back a particular candidate, while 15 percent said it would make them less likely to do so.

But Palin's impact among evangelical and Tea Party-leaning GOP voters could be significant in the current multi-conservative field.

Asked how impactful a Palin endorsement would be, one Gingrich aide replied succinctly: "Big."

Yep, it would be big alright. Just ask John McCain, Christine O'Donnell, or more recently, Tim Tebow. Their careers just "soared" after Palin was attached to them like that facehugger creature from the Alien movies.

And if that were not enough to deter the Gingrich campaign from seeking an endorsement from Palin, perhaps the fact that her providing that endorsement might send their candidate to jail might be enough to persuade them of her toxicity.

You see since Newt had all but assured Palin of a "major role" in his administration if he were elected president, and if she provides her endorsement after he publicly made that statement, it puts him legal jeopardy according to the US legal code.

According to TITLE 18 > PART I > CHAPTER 29 > § 599§ 599.

Promise of appointment by candidate Whoever, being a candidate, directly or indirectly promises or pledges the appointment, or the use of his influence or support for the appointment of any person to any public or private position or employment, for the purpose of procuring support in his candidacy shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than one year, or both; and if the violation was willful, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than two years, or both.

I know that after last night's win the Gingrich campaign is flying high right now.(Well as high as one can fly with 300 pounds of bacon grease soaked male cellulite dragging them back to earth that is.) And they may actually believe that Palin had something to do with it. (We certainly know SHE does.)

So they have to ask themselves a question. Is the possibility that Palin might have helped win South Carolina, a heavily evangelical state that was NEVER going to vote for that Mormon Romney no matter who was running against him, worth the risk of seeking her endorsement and in response being heavily fined or doing actual jail time?

In other words, "Are you feeling lucky, Punk?"

Update: I just saw this on "UP with Chris Hayes" and thought I would share it.

Seems fitting doesn't it?

For those who are fearful that Newt could actually make it into the White House, I would remind you that while Chuckie spread a lot of mayhem in his films, and piled up an impressive body count,  ultimately he always met a terrible fate before the credits rolled at the end of the movie. So this metaphor may be very apt indeed.

I'm sure the 'bots want two things: they want Palin in the VP slot, and THEN, after the election they are SURE they will win (just like SC is SURE that if they could just have another shot at that Civil War thingy, the South will be triumphant!) then Gingrinch can be arrested and Sarah will, finally, get her just reward. Still delusional as ever, and just as dangerous.

Willow's alleged engagement may be an actual shrewd calculation on Sarah's part. Sarah will soon be faking another preggoancy. This time she'll be faking it while running as "The Gingrich's" VP. She'll have doctor's orders to skip any press conferences, interviews, and debates. She will announce that it is Gawd's will that she is with child, an "Omen," despite having her tooobs tied several years ago.

Let's see 23% - 15% gives Sarah a 8% positive influence on as much as 30 - 40 percent of the electorate who are conservative Republicans.

In reality it is much less than that since her influence is virtually non existent outside of the group that believes that Adam was made of clay, and then had a rib yanked out that morphed into an adult women. (Why wasn't Eve made of clay also too? It would have been so much easier, and less cruel.)

So her impact is more like 8% of 10%.

If Newt or any other candidate really needs Sarah's support they are admitting to being really desperate.

Also they will have hurt themselves in a national election where they will need a train load of those college educated or equivalent independent voters who long ago recognized Sarah is Wasilla's town idiot.

Newt needs to remember that when Palin was still being polled nationally she got approval in the low single digits.

The Republicans are actually hurting themselves badly with all these TV debates, since they are seen and read about by the whole country. They are showing themselves to be mean spirited, fact deprived politicians with only one or two issues that they have any thing to talk about.

  9. first off...newt is going no where.
and palins endorsement means absolutely zero. didnt ALL the top mutts come together just last week and endorse that scum rick sanitariam? where did that go??

only romney attracts the majority of republican voters and its ron paul who attracts the "independents".
in fact i doubt even newt thinks he can win the nomination.
my guess is newt wants the VP slot positioning himself for a possible run after obama wins reelection.

palins "role" is to keep her dusty ho ass relevant with the numskulls who think gingrinch will need the ho as VP to win election once nominated.

    bottom line?
romney is THE GUY the power elite want and poor newt will be lucky to survive the coming onslaught.
palin will not endorse because after newt goes gone in flames she would just look like a loser too.

In one poll, 99% of the people that voted in the SC republican primary designated themselves as "white", in a state with a large percentage of non-whites.

The large majority for Newt Gingrich in SC has very little to do with endorsements, political posturing, evangelicalism, etc. It's all about angry white people trying to get retribution for their perceived injustices.

Newt Gingrich quit congress right after he was re-elected. He is a quitter. But that's not a problem for the voters of SC. Newt Gingrich sings the song that SC republicans want to hear, the poor stupid saps.

The Palins can circumvent the law by Todd openly endorsing Newt.

I don't think Newt will gain any advantage with Palin support across the country. Although Palin can orchestrate divisiveness, is highly manipulative and has a forum on Fox she is largely viewed as a blathering word salad spinner and unfit for office. Her credibility took a nose dive. She demonstrated she went for the money and learned nothing she needed to learn the last three years.

Granted Palin still has supporters but they also have dwindled after she mislead them.

I don't see that Evangelicals were going with Newt rather than Mormon Romney. I think they were A) taking the chance that he's one who could actually beat Obama (with all Newt's anger and tough talk they probably were seduced into thinking this; it was the no 1 voting rationale in exit polling), and B) many were probably relating to him as someone who pays an approx 30% tax rate like most of us. Romney is clearly going to have a problem being so incredibly wealthy, particularly in our difficult economic times.

Actually, it's amazing they were overlooking the fact that Newt cheated on his wife with a supposedly devout Catholic woman (even her Catholicism didn't deter them). I honestly don't think the religious denomination concern was the prevailing reason they turned away from Romney. It's possible Evangelical Palin voters went with Newt because of her obvious preference, but again I think this was because she believes Newt's the one who can go all the way, not because any of them believe he is an appropriate representative of their religious beliefs. Or inversely, that they had such a huge problem with Romney being Mormon.

But, I do think that C), Newt specifically tapped into their deep racism last week (like no other candidate), and the "anybody but a black president" mentality probably played the biggest part in his win. Newt's recent performances assured them of his racist attitudes, and also made them believe he can actually boot President Obama out. Romney is clearly not as forceful a personality, and they see the writing on the wall should he become the nominee. With Newt, it isn't as clear right now - but it will be.

Newt Gingrich will self-destruct because he is a megalomaniac just like Sarah Palin. It will be quite something to watch. And then the GOP will be back where they started - they got nuthin'! What a bunch of idiots.

I'd have been surprised if Gingrich hadn't won SC by a large margin. He's a fat, mean, racist Southerner and SC isn't the most enlightened state. He would have won even without Sarah Palin's "endorsement."

Newt and Sarah are a match made in hell. They're both mean and nasty and will do or say anything to win.

@6:30 You got it right, 50%. Newt won in SC because of two things: He is a fat, mean racist who played that Food Stamp card to white voters. (I don't think that there are many African American Republicans in SC).

The other 50% was Romney's terrible performance in the debates. The way that he stammered in response to the "show me your taxes" was sad (or good news, depending). Mitt had to know that would come up, and he looked unprepared. That lost him votes, too.

Sarah's endorsements and the possibility of her serving in a Gingrich administration don't mean anything. Sarah lost in 2008. She has a small, loyal following of right wing, conservative, religious fans. She pushes the conversation and the voters to the far right, insuring an Obama win because she drives away independents and moderate voters.

  19. The results in South Carolina are not accurate to what will happen in the general election. In his victory speech, Newt talked about the "New York and D.C. elite." That will not play well in the Northeast or with a more evolved electorate. Newt's race baiting will sink him with the minority vote.

Florida again is an aberration, a mix of senior citizens, Cuban immigrants, poor and so-called red necks. And as we know, Florida was the site of the stolen election of 2000.

Write these two states off and look at the bigger picture. How does anyone think that Newt's race baiting and "Food Stamp President" line will go over in the heartland?

Remember, from now on, the primaries are closed to only registered Republicans. Ron Paul will be out; Santorum is already lobbying for VP and Newt will probably self-destruct before then.

So, I see Romney-Santorum as the final GOP ticket.

And I hope to help deliver the Obama landslide that he so richly deserves.

Gingrich was on "Meet the Press" trying to smile and laugh a couple of times, but he's a terrible actor and he looked maniacal.
Then he kept repeating one of his mantras: comparing President Obama and President Carter. Many voters won't remember an administration that was more than thirty years ago, or the circumstances that led to Carter's defeat.
I fell in a figurative hole this year, and had to resort to both foodstamps and Romneycare for a short period of time. I'm not ashamed -- and I was able to eat and see the doctor.
Now, I'm lucky enough to have a paycheck again, as Newt keeps trumpeting. But I was among the destitute, hungry and sick for a while, and nothing will ever bring me to vote for that grotesque rabble rouser.
And, btw, Romneycare is working, has not caused any major damages to the system, and is a godsend for the poor and unemployed in Massachusetts. And, I bet, it would work in every one of our 50 states.
Newt is basically saying that if you don't have money, you're not entitled to have food (which he so clearly enjoys) or be sick. And, if you are, tough luck. So very Christian of him!

What if Newt is in this thing to simply make money and screw the GOP? I've thought about this a bit. He was on his book tour, sales were piss poor so he decided to throw his hat in the ring knowing he was unelectable. Then he started performing better after having his ass handed to him in Iowa and NH. Then he goes to SC, plays the race cards and off he goes. He chums up with Sara and gets her purse carrier's endorsement knowing full well he'd never offer her squat if he was elected. In the mean time his coffers are filling with cash and he's probably siphoning off every nickel he can. His past was largely ignore by SC voters who loved his racism and anger. His infidelities don't matter down there since many people are married to their cousins, they are fundie evangelists and hate Catholics as much as they hate Jews, Muslims and atheists. So they could care less he pissed on the pope's church. He's smiling so much because he's laughing all the way to the bank and his continued success is just a big eff you to the traditional GOP hierarchy. He won't win the nomination but he will terrorize the GOP, get the payback and last laugh and make his millions. I'm sure he's realized that if Sara can make 12 million even as stupid as she is that he can make 40 million and be set for life.

I'm sure that incidentally, Gingrich would be thrilled to become President, but first and foremost, this campaign is making him millions of dollars. Every time he insults the MSM, the Tea Party roars in approval, then whips out their checkbooks to buy one of his books. (Which he prominently advertises on his campaign site.)

And of course, the more that Palin aligns with Gingrich, the more she can parasite off some of these dollars being flung his way. Because these fools will likewise write out a check to her in some way every time she gives Gingrich an "attaboy."

The Republican Party has long been a commercial enterprise, with the Tea Party politics of resentment being one of their most lucrative brands. And Gingrich and Palin are two of the most successful merchants at shamelessly hawking this brand.

The Republicans are actually hurting themselves badly with all these TV debates, since they are seen and read about by the whole country. They are showing themselves to be mean spirited, fact deprived politicians with only one or two issues that they have any thing to talk about.

It’s impossible not to agree with the more pointed response of Turkey’s Foreign Ministry, which said of his remarks:

“Those individuals who are candidates for positions requiring responsibility such as the U.S. presidency are expected to be more knowledgeable on global affairs and more careful in their statements.”

I think that applies to the whole clown car including Mittens & pillsbury doughboy....

Newtie's going to have a real problem if and when he reaches Florida. The first thing he did in his "Victory lap" was kiss Florida's ass. Florida, being full of old people who wear plaid shorts, drive golf carts everywhere, and can't remember where they live DROOLED and FAWNED over Sarah Palin on her "Trig sideshow book sellin bus tours" The octogenarian dementia set adores her, and Gingrich sees her as his "in" with those voters. It wouldn't surprise me if he used Sarah to get them and the teavangelical votes. The cuban/hispanic votes will be the focus of his bullshit campaign, but he's highly dillusional to believe he can pull that off. So I can see him needing Sarah's populaarity to get his foot in the door, but will his money last long enough? Will he even make it to Florida? Does he think Sarah can influence Rubio for the hispanic vote?

I doubt it. His food stamp talk, and having minorities cleaning bathrooms isn't going to sit well, neither will his views on immigration. Even though a majority of hispanics are Catholic, they're smart enough to realize his reason for conversion, and that won't sit well either.

    OT

Chris Hayes show rocks! Wish it was on later, but glad to have tivo. Can't wait for Mellissa Harris Perry to have her own show.

Gryphen, you're going to love this graphic - the front page of Sunday's Washington Post. It basically captures what I'm sure is happening in the White House right now with the news of Newt's win in South Carolina.
