Stephen Colbert knows exactly how to cure "teh gay."

You have to admit, it does seem just a tad counter intuitive.

(P.S. If you think I misspelled the headline you need to find somebody younger to explain why I didn't.)

Update: For those who are questioning whether this is indeed a Colbert quote, yes it is.

He said it while discussing Michele and Marcus Bachmann's "pray away the gay" clinics. You can see for yourself by clicking here. (Video is second one down.)

  1. I thought I would end today on a humorous note since I have been in a kind of funk ever since I posted that Gabby Giffords video.

I hope it made you laugh, or at least smile.

What is your source for this quote? This doesn't seem like something Stephen Colbert would say. He's definitely skewered the rightwing interpretation of Christianity in the past, but that's not the same as mocking taking Communion, which this quote really seems to do more than mock rightwing "Christians" who insist that being gay is something that can or should be "cured."

By the way, Stephen Colbert is also a devout Christian, who in fact teaches Sunday School at his church (or did, at some point).

See, Mr. Gryphen, THIS is why I love your blog!

  4. Marcus Bachmann take note: Stephen Colbert has the answer to your prayers. Santorum (Google him) as well. And perhaps I-can't-quit-you Rick Perry. Seems that the Repugs have a love of teh gay - as you would say.

    How
s that working out for ya? After seeing the Creature from the Crypt earlier, I would definitely put Toad in with the others in the closet. That is one scary woman. I did notice that Sarah had on her "campaign hair updo."

Why not mock communion? In my childhood church we used grapejuice instead of wine - one Sunday they ran out of grape juice and we got apple juice. Surprised they didn't use prune juice but I suppose they wanted us to stay put for the sermon

Not What You Want to Hear:

I watched this episode and he did in fact say it.

I have only seen him break character one other time, but after he said this he made a face and I think crossed himself or said he was sorry. Something like that.

Did anyone see this? It is all over my facebook page:

Newt lied about food stamps under Obama.

it's sounds just like colbert...he mocks everyone without picking favorites. and he's catholic (i googled to make sure;o))

  9. Thanks, Gryphen. You got a smile from me.

@Not What You Want to Hear - It's definitely a quote from Colbert who is Catholic. Catholicism teaches the doctrine of transubstantiation where the communion wafer and wine actually becomes the flesh and blood of Christ. I don't know if Catholics generally realize that other denominations teach that communion is symbolic.

If you copy a quote to a Google search, you can usually verify the author.

Surprises me that Gingrich has a lesbian step-sister. Here she is on Maddow. Starts at 3:11. The sister will vote for Obama.

Yep. He did mock taking communion (notice the lowercase c) Doesn't mean he isn't a christian. He is a comedian.

The most blasphemous jokes I ever heard were from staunch church-going Catholics. Wanna hear some?

Since when does religion get a pass-card from satire and ridicule? It's such a rich resource.

  15. Yes, he is a devout Christian, a Catholic I believe, but he does mock the church as much as anyone. Probably he did say this.

  16. to Not What You Want to Hear, Stephen Colbert is not a devout Christian of no particular denomination. He is, in fact, a devout Catholic. And one with an outstanding sense of humour. The Pope could take a few notes.

Thanks for all you do! You make me laugh or smile every single day.

Colbert IS Catholic, although, I don't know whether he is practicing. He is the youngest of eleven children. Irish heritage.

Here is a quote from Wikipedia:
Colbert describes his parents as devout people who also strongly value intellectualism and taught their children that it was possible to question the Church and still be Catholic

This may be the perfect song to go with the Colbert quote.

    Tom Lehrer's "Vatican Rag" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3f72CTDe4-0

I thought Stephen was Jewish. It doesn't matter-- when you are part of the church, you realize how funny things are.

I agree about Gabby...but I think she will be back, just like Weiner and hopefully some day Spitzer. Alan Grayson is going for it...

Love this--and I HIGHLY recommend Tom Lehrer as well. We used to sing "The Vatican Rag" as kids. Look for him and his brilliant songs on youtube.

  25. Thanks G for posting. Stephen has such a way of distinguishing the "learner" from the "learned". It sometimes takes me a moment or two to get his humor but I am in the ranks of the "learner".

Gryphen, now that you mention it, while I know "teh gay" is often used, I do not know where it comes from--perhaps because I lived outside the US for several decades. So a link to its origins would be appreciated, or an explanation from someone?

Gryphen and everyone else who posted a link, thanks for taking the time to do so. I humbly stand corrected. (Just an fyi, I did google "Colbert gay cure" before asking my question but only got links to similar jpegs, not the video. Next time, I'll google full quotes as another poster suggested.)

I'm sure other IMers can help me with this explanation, but here goes...

The spelling of "the" as "teh" originated with a website called I Can Has Cheezburger. The site features photos of kitties with funny captions and idiosyncratic spelling of certain words. So "the" has morphed into "teh". "Has" is "haz". There are lots of grammar memes as well. Truly a fun place.

As far as "teh gay" -- I remember Rachel Maddow responding to some rwnj about his rant about "the gay" and how they needed help. She said something like... "the gay? The gay? Is that like the measles?"

    Awesome. And Colbert is Catholic.

    ReplyDelete
  30. In other words, 'teh' instead of 'the' and 'pwned' instead of 'owned' originated with the kids at 4chan being lazy typists :)

4chan is where 'Anonymous' (also known as /b/) was born.

Although teh and pwned are not exactly Leet (replacing letters with numbers), they are important components of Leet-speak's shorthanded phonetics.

The not at all subtle hints of cannibalism in the Last Supper have always bothered me.
When I was very young I did believe in transubstantiation and found it very confusing that the grape juice still tasted like grape juice even after I drank it.

It is not the acceptance of the symbols Christ's sacrifice, it's the consumption part that is so freaky. And most if not all Christian churches consider communion mandatory to being truly Christian.

Thanks, Gryphen - this did bring a smile to my face. And here I was, all this time, thinking Colbert was a reformed orthodox rastafarian druid - now I learn he's just a Catholic;o)

The genius of Colbert is his ability to poke fun at most any topic, even if it's part of his own belief system. It's something I admire in a comedian.

It's the perfect pallette cleanser after such a somber and heartwrenching story like Gabby's shooting and decision to step down.

If you can't poke fun at religion, then you are no better than the Taliban/AlQuaeda/Muslim Fundies that go ballistic when cartoons or art poke fun at M------d.

I thought Colbert hilarious, especially when you take that one joke in context with the whole riff.

For people who found this offensive, I suggest you visit the website StuffChristiansLike, written by a devout apparently Conservative church-goer. His blogs poking fun at communion (and what people are actually thinking about when they take it) are side-splitting.
