We knew who would NOT call, but we also knew who would. Update!

Courtesy of CNN:

Obama called Giffords on Sunday "to offer his support" and say that she, other shooting victims and the Tucson community are "in their daily thoughts and prayers," the White House said in a statement.

"The president expressed amazement at the courage and determination Rep. Giffords has shown along her incredible road to recovery, calling her an inspiration to his family and Americans across the country," the statement added.

I never had any doubt that President Obama would make it a priority to call Gabby today.  And I have known since I first saw this picture.

The comforter-in-chief would never let this day pass without making sure to let Gabby know that he is still thinking of her. Just like somebody else we know would take great pains to NEVER mention a word about the tragedy.

Today the people of Tucson will have the opportunity to tell Gabby just how proud they all are of her, and share her pain at the loss of those six innocent lives.

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords is among those in Tucson, Arizona, on Sunday to mark one year since a shooting rampage that left her and 12 others wounded and six people dead, an anniversary that her chief of staff said has been "difficult emotionally for everybody."

I will hopefully have footage of the event to update this post with later.

Update:  I don't have any video but I do have a news report to share:

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords led a crowd in the Pledge of Allegiance, her words ringing out across a cold Tucson night in a rare public appearance Sunday evening at a candlelight vigil one year after surviving a deadly shooting that killed six.

The Democratic congresswoman stepped onstage to cheers from the crowd. Ron Barber, a staffer who was wounded in a deadly shooting one year ago, invited her to lead the audience in the pledge.

The crowd chanted: "Gabby, Gabby."

She limped to the podium, and husband Mark Kelly helped lift her left hand over her heart. After a year in which she has struggled to speak, Giffords recited the pledge with the audience, head held high and a smile on her face as she punched each word.

The remembrance at the University of Arizona capped off a day of events, including a church service that drew hundreds in the afternoon and a citywide bell-ringing at 10:11 a.m., the exact time a gunman started shooting at a Safeway political event.

With hugs and tears, southern Arizonans remembered the dead, the shattered lives and those who acted heroically after a gunman opened fire at an outdoor meet-and-greet that severely wounded Giffords and killed six.

This is the kind of strength that many might claim to possess, but few actually do.

I have to admit that I thought I was pretty formidable once, but compared to Gabby Giffords I don't consider myself too damn impressive.

Amazing woman.  Simply amazing.

Update 2: Picture of Gabby leading the pledge.

How's that for a great end to the weekend?

Since Sarah Palin considered herself POTUS material, then you would of thought she would be tranny enough.... I mean man enough... I mean person enough to admit her mistakes and call Gabby to apologize for the gun sight cross hairs.

But I forgot... We are talking about Sarah Palin!

I am so proud of President Obama, so amazed at the courage and resilience of Gabby and the devotion of her husband. We have so many positive role models, none of whom is Sarah Palin.

How sad to realize Sarah has learned nothing, not grown at all. How typically Republican and Tea Party.

So, why did we Tucsonans start lovin' us some Gabby ten years ago?

Gabby graduated from Scripps College in '93, and was a Fullbright Scholar in '93-'94 in Chihuahua, Mexico (she is bilingual), then got her Masters from Cornell in '96. Was elected to the AZ House in '01 and in '02 became the youngest woman ever elected to the AZ senate. During her time there she was at different times named Legislator of the Year by the Mental Health Assoc of AZ, Outstanding Legislator by the AZ Family Literacy Assoc, and Most Valuable Player by the Sierra Club. She expanded both health care coverage and Kindergarten opportunities for AZ children.

In her first month in the US House in 2007, she voted for fed funding of embryonic stem cell research, raising the min wage, new ethics rules for House members, the repeal of $14B in subsidies to Big Oil, measures favoring renewable resource subsidies, and the founding of the Strategic Renewable Energy Reserve. Later in the session, she introduced legislation to stop the sale of F-14 parts on the open market, and is co-founder of the Congressional Motorcycle Safety Caucus (Gabby also owns a Harley). She has also supported Immigration Reform and a secure U.S.-Mexico border.

Gabby is also an accomplished horseman (nat'l level competitor), a gun rights advocate, and is a gun owner herself. W/ reference to her Glock (nearly the same as the one with which she and 18 others were shot one year ago), she said, "... and I'm pretty good with it."

She has no history of fancy pageant walkin', wearin' short skirts w/ f-me boots, or wearin' fake glasses to convey the impression that she is smarter than a toaster. Gabby also married an astronaut w/ a BS in Marine Engr and an MS in Aeronautical Engr before a Navy career that included flying F-14s and four shuttle missions, 2 as pilot and 2 as commander.

  16. Some of the comments I've read at various new sites today anger me deeply. Gabby was the object of a crazed gunman's obsession, and the other people were just part of how he carried out his lunacy. All of the lives lost were precious, as are the ones who survived. And making Gabby the symbol of survival and strength for such a horrible event is a good thing that draws people together. But the evil comments are all about why the hell are people all gaga about Gabby and they are sick of her, plus the "guns don't kill people" rhetoric. I feel sick when I read this kind of evil.

She ispires me with her courage and grace. It takes guts to go back to that spot. I was in a car accident where several people got hurt and two died, it took me years to muster the courage to see that stretch of road again, and I escaped with a few scratches.

This is a huge step in Gabby's recovery.

To get a deeper understanding of what she's been through, read her and Mark's book. A testament to the power of love and resilliance.

And, yes, Our President hasn't forgotten and is genuinly concerned. He'd do the same for anyone in any party.

My earnest hope for Gabby is that she can recover to the point where she can walk unaided to the floor of the US house of Representatives

I hope she will some day walk out there, and give a once in a lifetime speech on the value of true compassion, forgiveness, reconciliation, and repudiating forever the hatred and bigotry of those who want to impose their views on other Americans, instead of working together in comity and civility to forge compromises for the sake of the nation.

I hope I live to see that day where Gabrielle Giffords is honored by a standing ovation in the US house for returning to her full duties representing the citizens of Arizona.

I have some hope left for America, but not much.

The saddest part of all this for me is to think what a great nation we could have become, if the people representing us in Washington had not wasted our money, started wars of travesty and ideology, and abandoning us in favor of personal greed, power and lobbyists' money.

We have dishonored the memory and the legacy of those who fought so bravely in 1776, and my earnest hope is that some day we might be worthy again to call them the "Founding Fathers"

Bravo Gabby Giffords, I salute YOU tonite, not the flag.

Gabby should get the Congressional Medal of Honor. She is a true hero, a remarkable young woman, and a real role model for today's girls. She and Michelle Obama are class personified. I always get so angry at posters who portray liberal women as ugly, and call us 'jealous' of Sarah and Bachmann because they are so attractive. Idiots. There is so much more to being a good human being than wearing short skirts at 50 and having a staff to make you up. In fact, those things are not even important. How you treat your fellow man is what counts, and the record of the GOP in general, and GOP women in power (Coulter, Greta, Megyn Kelly, Sarah, Bachmann, and so many more) treat others in a demeaning, haughty manner, as if they can't be bothered with anyone not sharing their misogynist beliefs.

A self proclaimed 1% offered these pearls of wisdom with the following link:

"knows more white people receive food stamps than black people******** relative to their population, blacks by far out number whites collecting food stamps."

    http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2009/11/28/us/20091128-foodstamps.html

See, the trickery in these types of statistics is that they pick places where the total population is low to begin with. The smaller the population, the larger the percentages are. Why choose these cities in the first place? Because, the intent is to try and frame the argument that "proves" Black people are pimping the welfare system.

If the population was larger, that number of white recipients would definitely go up. Think about it. If Black people only make up 13-17% of the TOTAL U.S. population, it is damn near IMPOSSIBLE for Blacks to be the main recipient of ANY benefit. These statistics are just another con game -- a numbers game designed to fool those who don't know how to "read them".

I can't look at either of them without tearing up. They are both American heroes with a history of outstanding accomplishments - they are the best of what Americans can be.

When I compare their lives and the character that they possess with the selfish, cruel, vulgar, immoral and destructive lives of Sarah and Todd Palin, it's impossible to not feel revulsion for the entire Palin-Heath clan. Sarah Palin brought shame to our country - she is the worst of what Americans can be.
