Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and her husband, Todd, are among 947 claimants qualified for a piece of about $1 million in remaining settlement funds from the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill in the waters of Prince William Sound.
The Palins are claimants No. 655 and 656. How much of a claim they may be due is unknown.
Their place on that list is colored by the former governor's assertions in the 2009 book "Going Rogue: An American Life" that her administration helped those impacted by one of the country's worst environmental disasters.
In 2009, a lawyer for the Exxon Valdez plaintiffs told Reuters that the former governor's claims of aid were mostly "cockamamie bullshit."
That lawyer, Dave Oesting, remains lead attorney for Exxon Valdez plaintiffs, and may soon find Palin among those claimants who come calling to collect.
You know there are people who really suffered, or lost their livelihoods completely, due to that spill. The Palins are not among those people.
The fact that this millionaire couple's name is on this list is indefensible.
It will ultimately not really be that muhc money, and it just reinforces what Alaskans have known about the mall along. They are NOTHING but lowlife grifters.
Why is this payout happening now? Is the legal system THAT backed up?

Fascinating back-stories become evident after thoughtful observance; and my questions about "who could possibly endorse such a candidate as SP" are, in a sense, answered. Sadly, the answer seems to be: Somebody not like me.
And that is a good working definition of prejudice.
And yet, I feel that the American people were betrayed when a person of such limited intelligence and attributes was placed in nomination for the second highest office in the land. I can still remember that sensation of the hairs on my neck raising up as she gave her acceptance speech in 2008.

I have a couple friends on this list. I asked the husband about it yesterday. He laughed and said he was never going to bother to collect. His claim was for $18, and his wife's (who was his crew) was for $2. He also had claims for other fisheries worth much more that he has collected on.
ReplyDeleteWhile the Palin's set net fishery in Bristol Bay can not be the source of this claim, it's possible that it's from halibut fishing. Didn't Sarah claim they were commercial halibut fishermen in that episode of SP Alaska where she and Bristol were clubbing halibut?
I thought that was another one of Katie Couric's gotcha questions for Sarah from 2008: What Supreme Court decision do you disagree with? How about Exxon/Valdez, which was announced in June 2008? It cut the original $2.5 billion in damages awards to $500 million. People got much less compensation than they were entitled to. And, Sarah couldn't remember it-- and it had just happened earlier that year. Now, she remembers.

Most Alaskans would spend a couple of days just driving from Wasilla or Anchorage to Deadhorse on the Dalton Highway, a road distance of about 850 miles, to save money to be able to afford a charter flight back into the country.
Not Palin. She charters a twin-engine DeHavilland Dash, a much more comfortable way to travel, to the tune of more than $35,000.
Palin appears to have spent a minimum of $42,400 on her above-the-Arctic Circle caribou hunt. That's the figure a Hollywood website more into movie-making logistics than hunting calculated for transportation and lodging after talking to the businesses that provides those services.
Read the story and you'll notice the $42,400 doesn't factor in any gear -- and Alaska's ex-governor, a well-known clothes horse, clearly got a spiffy new wardrobe for her show.

ReplyDeleteIf they are on the list because of their Bristol Bay fishing, I agree with you. But just because they are millionaires is no reason for them to be kept from collecting if they were involved in a fishery that wa harmed by the spill. That could be a fishery that was cancelled because of where the oil went and quality was being protected, or one that was damaged so that it was reduced or closed such as PWS herring, or one in which the market lost price as the fishery and fish were suspect in the customers eyes so they quit buying them. This happened another tine in the 80's too when a European man died from botulism after eating a can of pink salmon. That incident caused pink salmon prices to tumble for years. The Exxon spill caused the same thing to happen.
In one of the most appalling cases of greed to come out of the spill, set netters in the Moser/Olga Bay area of Kodiak were the only people who got to fish salmon on Kodiak that year. The seiners who usually catch a large chunk of the salmon before they get to Moser or Olga Bays weren't allowed to fish. As a result The setnetters there had banner years. Some made many time what they normally make because they caught so many fish. Then they turned around and sued because the spill caused the price to drop. So they sued because the price dropped on fish they would never have caught if not for the spill.
I despise the Palins, but they are not the only greedy people in the world by a long shot. And just because they are who they are is no reason to keep them from collecting what they are legally entitled to.

Being related to a sociopath, I am very aware that they are snake charmers....they have this amazing ability to get some people to believe anything that comes out of their mouths....that combined with the "business" that the Palin's seem to be connected with i.e. the dirty under world of people's sexual preferences ...one can only imagine what sort of hold they have on a lot of people.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking as a live long Alaskan, I know that there are a lot of good people that live here, but I also know that there are a lot of "end-of-the roaders" that end up in Alaska to escape society and the law including sex offenders and child molesters. I would guess that there were even some in Bristol Bay as well as Wassilla when Sarah and Todd were growing up. Just sayin, but it sounds like there are a lot of people that have things to hide.
She is named as a claimant, but yet couldn't remember a Supreme Court Case ??? Does she not remember in February 2008 just months before she was tapped as VP, that the SUPREME COURT heard the appeals from Exxon in Baker v. Exxon??? Here is a case she was supposedly up close and personal with (according to her rag of a book) and when asked to name a supreme court case she couldn't recall this one...
