Petraeus affair revealed after lover sent threatening e-mails to other woman.

Courtesy of the Daily Mail:

Jill Kelley, 37, of Tampa, Florida, is a State Department military liaison officer who appears to have a longstanding friendship with Petraeus, who quit as CIA director in disgrace last week.

She told agents that Paula Broadwell, the 40-year-old biographer who has been identified as the ex-CIA boss' mistress, sent her harassing emails telling her to 'back off' Petraeus.

Ms Kelley works in the Joint Special Operations Command, a section of the U.S. Armed Forces that deals mostly with counter-terrorism.

The Joint Special Ops Command was directly involved in the mission that took out Osama bin Laden and the drone strike that killed radical cleric Anwar al-Awlaki.

Details of the affair between Petraeus and Broadwell reportedly came to light during a FBI probe of the emails that she allegedly sent to Ms Kelley.

The new revelation raises the possibility that Broadwell was growing increasingly jealous of a government employee whose job it was to keep in contact with Petraeus.

Holly Petraeus, wife of the General, with Jill Kelley and her husband

Ms Kelley, who feared for her safety, contacted the FBI.

A government official told the New York Post that the emails contained such language as: 'I know what you did,' 'back off' and 'stay away from my guy.'

The official added: '[Broadwell] clearly thought something was going on' and thought she was in a 'lovers triangle.'

The Salt Lake Tribune reported that Broadwell had shown up on the CIA radar before over working over concerns about what she was putting on her Facebook page.

The Tribune reported that there had been concerns about whether Broadwell was giving away sensitive security information in her posts.

Broadwell, who is married with two young sons, has not responded to multiple emails and phone messages.

She had planned to celebrate her 40th birthday in Washington this weekend, with many reporters invited. Her husband Scott emailed guests to cancel the party.

It is also claimed that Broadwell used Petraeus' own Gmail account to send the emails, and when the FBI began to investigate an obvious national security issue instead uncovered explicit messages between the two sent from the decorated war hero's own account - indicating an affair.

Wow this thing is all kinds of tangled up.

However it is pretty clear after reading this, that while it is a very unfortunate situation damaging a number of promising careers, it is certainly NOT an attempt to create some false story to keep Petraeus from testifying before Congress about the Benghazi incident, like the Right Wing has recently been  all up in arms about.

I think if they keep heading down that conspiracy road they are going to look even more foolish than they did after predicting a Mitt Romney landslide.

Why couldn't Petraeus be called in to testify on Benghazi? Isn't that what they would do with anyone else?

BS...it takes two to have an affair. Is there any evidence that the Gerneral solicited sex from this woman? Is there any evidence that the General stalked her or forced her into a relationship? Is there any evidence to disprove that this woman was the aggresser and/orstalker in this situation? I doubt that Gloria Allred would be interested in this case....unless she were to take the general's case. Just a thought :-)

I feel sorry for Mrs. Petraeus. The general, especially as CIA chief, should have known not to get involved like that and, certainly, not to use email. What fools mere mortals can be!

It's only news because of security concerns. People in high positions like Petraeus are considered to be security threats if they have affairs mainly due to the threat of blackmail, so affairs are against the rules. I believe that if Petraeus had not resigned, he would have been canned.

I actually have a bit of sympathy too for the general, an aging war hero who succumbed to an attractive and apparently emotionally unbalanced younger woman. I hope the 37 year marriage is strong enough to survive this and ultimately move on.

I have read stories about how hard a military officers wife has to work to help her husband advance up the ranks. Poor Mrs. P..37 years spent helping this jerk to have him do this to you now. She looks like a nice lady..and surely does not deserve for the whole world to be privy to the dirty laundry.

My take is that Broadwell knew exactly what she was doing. She talked on the John Stewart show about her following Gen. P to Afghanistan so he could "help" her with her Master's degree. She is definitely unhinged, because she HAD to know the affair and those emails would come out. Her husband, sons, and parents have my sympathy too.

The NYT is reporting a 'close friend' knows the intimate relations started after he retired.

A close friend of the Petraeus family said Sunday that the intimate relationship between Mr. Petraeus and his biographer, Paula Broadwell, began after he retired from the military last year and about two months after he started as C.I.A. director. It ended about four months ago, said the friend, who did not want to be identified while discussing personal matters.

How are the Repubs going to spin that into a Benghazi impeachment? Why would an affair or two stop the General from testimony? His other "close friend" has a twin and she deals with counter-terrorism when she is not the good doctors wife. I would think that is like a kid in a candy shop for the General, two for one. Broadwell had good reason to be jealous.

I don't know if you are aware of this Gyphen, but Petraeus is a rabid Dominionist, responsible for much of the religious proselytizing in the military. See Leah's post on it in Gods Own Party. It's the second one down.

I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but I think there is much about his actions in the CIA that needs to be investigated than his affair.

From the beginning of the attacks, almost simultaneously with the release of the video produced & sent out to Muslim news sources by a Dominionist, President of Christian University, I was suspicious that it was a choreographed plan by the right wing to stir up a crisis for the President shortly before the election.

Romney’s immediate leap to the press
‘during’ the attack further strengthened that suspicion. The closely co-ordinated attacks by the GOPTP, all blaming the President, all saying the same things followed immediately. The CIA base at the Consulate failed to stop or even hinder much of the attack, resulting in the 4 deaths. The GOP Issa committee which was established to prove it was Obama’s failure, inadvertently outed the fact that the CIA base was there (in their usual bungling way) so they had to disband the committee immediately.

It’s just my opinion, a theory, that I think there is a very good chance that the entire Benghazi incident was coordinated & set up between the RW and the CIA and yes, between certain elements of the terrorists themselves (CIA collaborators?) It certainly wouldn’t be the first time for the CIA to do something like this for the GOP.

It would benefit Petraeous’s & the GOPTP Dominionist ideals by demonizing Muslims and the President and presumably help to get Romney elected President.

I hope the FBI is looking into those possibilities as well as his “indiscretion” which is certainly minor in comparison. I don’t expect much.

Well, here we go again...another scandal with a married man and a crazy mistress.

And to those who think it's no big deal- it's a very serious issue! This man has access to the highest level security in our country and has shown himself to be a liar. I'm not ok with that.

His mistress had access to his private emails and likely a huge amount of information not intended for her. His judgment shows he cannot be trusted and compromised our security for a sexual affair.

If he's ok with lying to cover up his affair, what's to stop him from lying about other things that affect national security?? Obviously, he's not someone that can be trusted. EVER.

And the bimbo girlfriend - I hope her husband leaves her and I hope the general's wife dropkicks him as well.

The fact that the bimbo threatened another woman to stay away from a man that she herself is cheating with - disqusting show of hypocrisy and selfishness all around.

It would've been so easy for this to become a blackmail situation and potential serious harm to the US interests.

There should be charges brought against both of them in my opinion.

And I'm not forgetting when Clinton showed his stunning lack of common sense but at least his blowjob mistress didn't have access to his private emails and national security information. (At least I hope she didn't)

General Petraeus is a clever fellow. I read the other day that he considered himself to be a Rockefeller Republican. Well, not possible if he was a dominonist, although poor Nelson Rockefeller died while in the company of his mistress and the general certainly got caught in the public eye because of his.

I take this as just another reason that marriage (gay/straight/otherwise) should have no legal force. Many comments here blame Petraeus for "breaking up his marriage" or "destroying lives". None of us here are in any position to comment on his marriage--it could've been dead already and the only reason he didn't just leave his wife is because it would literally make him homeless and cost him a fortune.
