I know the man is a fossil and that some attribute these more scandalous responses to dementia, but I disagree. What Robertson is espousing is essentially faith healing, which states in an authoritarian fashion that the advancements made in medical research by man are inspired by Satan and the only way to true healing and salvation is by reaching out to God.
And for a televangelist like Pat Robertson that reaching out takes the form of demanding that they give him their money.
In my opinion this kind of scam should be against the law, and it would be, if it were not cloaked in the camouflage of Christianity.
To me He proves true evil does exist.
ReplyDeleteI had that battle with my mother when I was little. We couldn’t tithe; we didn’t have enough money, and she had nothing to send to radio preachers, but she coveted the lifestyle.
ReplyDeleteI made sure she was mocked, even if a child shouldn’t disrespect a parent, because it was so obviously bogus. Dad agreed, so I usually got away with my disrespect.
Exactly. I don't see a Jewish program where a rabbi is begging for money and promising salvation. Or a Muslim one, This has been going on since Biship Fulton J Sheen, who my Catholic grnadmother worshipped as much as she did JFK. Why are we so afraid to call this snake oil saleman out, shut him down, and stop funding all these charlatans, which we all do when we let them get away with their tax exempt status. This is not protected by the Constitution. If they want to go to some megachurch and give away a tenth of their money on Sundays, go for it, but do not put this stuff on TV and claim you are covered by the 1st amendment. What he told her is criminal, or should be. He's no better than those folks who think prayer heals, and let their children die.
ReplyDeleteI wish someone would buy up a "muslim' channel or a "Jewish channel," and things might change. But people in those religions do not evangelize...only Christians are afraid that their little moneymaker might disappear if they don't scare the sheep into compliance. This is insidious, really, and the dominionists like Pat are leading the charge.
Is he wearing a Burberry tie while he tells a woman to send him more money to heal her husband? WOW!!!
ReplyDeletelol. I had to wait a few seconds for the video to load and I couldn't help but notice that as well.
DeleteBut when the suits have Oxxford or Hickey-Freeman labels (if not Burberry, as well), a nice, expensive tie is a must.
Tax-exemption is just one of the crimes in this con game.
Totally agree with you Gryphen. The money should be used for the husband's medical expenses, not to enrich the church leaders!
ReplyDeleteThis is nothing new. 20 years ago, I was flipping through the channels & landed on his old CBN network & the 700 Club. He had a woman on who was on welfare, but sent her last $50 or something to Robertson and then "miraculously" got a job right after. It was the last $50 sent to him that made it happen.
ReplyDeleteI was so appalled. I called the 700 Club "prayer line" and voiced my opinion that people on welfare should not be sending in their last $50 to fund PR's media empire. I said PR & everyone involved, including the person answering the "prayer line," should be ashamed of their life choices.
God has a special place in Hell for these hucksters who prey on gullible, ignorant, non-thinking people. Their only purpose is to separate as much money as possible. It is God's will doncha know!. .
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry, but the Republican medical plan prior to Obamacare being prayer and a placebo didn't work.

Oh Pat......the Book of Malachi is the Old Law. It's the OT. The New Law under Christ does not require the tithe. NT believers are no longer under any curse and are not required to follow the Old Law. Why do you insist on returning back to the Old Law, when freedom in Jesus, is so easy? Maybe because you want to scam his sheep?
ReplyDeleteIronic how Robertson would want those retirees pension tithes, and would command them to, by faith, send their last $50 to him, so they could reap, by faith, a bigger blessing, yet, would ask his viewers to vote for Republicans, who voted to remove food stamps from the mouths of the poor.
ReplyDeleteSo, to Pat, he teaches to give to him, so he can send his political donation to the Party that takes away social safety nets from the poor. Now that doesn't make sense.
PLEASE DIE !
ReplyDeleteAgree! It's time for him to meet his maker!
DeleteThe poor wretches have convinced themselves first and foremost, that they are going to be immortal and live for all time, in consequence of which they despise death and even willingly give themselves into custody, most of them. Furthermore, their first lawgiver persuaded them that they are all brothers of one another, after they have transgressed once for all by denying the Greek gods, and by worshiping that crucified sophist himself and living under his laws. Therefore they despise all things indiscriminately and consider them common property-receiving such doctrines traditionally without any definite evidence. So if any charlatan or trickster able to profit from them comes along and gets among them, he quickly acquires sudden wealth by imposing upon simple folk.......Lucian....2nd century A.D.
ReplyDeleteRobertson's wife is a nurse. He's had a partial knee replacement, surgery to remove a cancerous prostate, and a 10-hour heart surgery (2009).
ReplyDeleteHis surgeries were miraculously successful because of his viewers tithes and prayers. It's a tricky business.
(He's surely had other treatments but these are the ones that are easily found by searching the web.)
