Newtown shooting 911 calls released.

Courtesy of the Chicago Tribune:

Newtown school shooting 911 calls reveal a mixture of calm and anguish from the callers, and gunshots from the assailant are heard in the background, audio recordings released today reveal.

The shooting spree at the Connecticut school a year ago killed 20 children and six educators.

Officials in Newtown, Connecticut, released recordings of 911 emergency phone calls from the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School this afternoon.

Gunman Adam Lanza, 20, shot dead his mother at home and then entered the school on Dec. 14, 2012, killing 26 people and then himself.

"They're shooting at the front door, something's going on ... The front glass is all shot out, it kept going on. It's still happening," a man calling himself Richard, sounding agitated and confused, tells a 911 emergency operator in one of the seven phone recordings posted on the Connecticut Post.

The operator calmly tells him to take cover.

Town officials initially tried to prevent release of the recordings. The state Freedom of Information Commission ordered the release of seven calls placed from inside the elementary school.

Here is the audio. (Warning! Very graphic and may cause a severe emotional response.)

I am not sure that I think releasing was necessary, or in good taste.

However I will say that, considering that there are many on the Right who feel this whole thing was a made up tragedy in order to attack the 2nd Amendment, perhaps there simply was not choice.

What I heard on those calls chilled me to the bone and made my stomach clench up tight.

I am still stunned that this tragedy did not result in significant gun control legislation. If this was not enough to bring people to their senses then perhaps there is nothing that ever will.

  1. Oh my G-d, Gryphen. Awful as the tapes are, they do prove--as if the massacre needed additional confirmation--that Sandy Hook was no hoax.

I won't listen. I hope you're right that there'll be enough positives to justify the decision to publish the audio. I really hate the thought of the whole audio being 'out there' and available for abuse.

Rachel Maddow did an amazing segment last night on the prospective release of the 9-11 call and the media's decision-making process to balance 1st Amendment rights with responsibility.

I can't even believe that some people think is was fake, or a false flag event. This country is seriously fucked up.

I live in CT. My cousin works with a man whose kid had to step over dead bodies. FACT.

The tin foil hat crew will ask why the tapes weren't released sooner, if in fact they are authentic. There's no winning with the Alex Jone's brigade.

You seem to be forgetting that 82+% of th epopulation was in favor of at least tightening the requirements for background checks.

The fault lies with those assholes who will do ANYTHING as long as it stops something Obama wants!

Well Leland, what do you think would happen if the government took our guns away? That's right, anything they want, look what happen in Boston, people hid in their homes over one teenager on the loose.
Sandy Hook was a fake, try doing some research.

Well, judging from a few comments, it seems nothing will prove Sandy Hook really happened unless there's a FOIA request to release the autopsy photos, and even that wouldn't be enough. They need to run their fingers into the bloody gaping holes and fish out fragments of bone themselves, and still Sandy Hook didn't happen.
No one's trying to take away people's right to bear arms, we're just asking for stricter background checks to keep guns out of the hands of the mentally disturbed until they get treatment.

Impossible to prove a lie. You're not going to find any such evidence. What you will find is many anomalies and subterfuge that prove the hoax. The media is used as a tool and this example of Hegelian Dialectic is one of many. If you don't scrutinize the story, you're wrong. If you do, you'll find the truth and be equally helpless.

So sad. Such a horror. Can you even imagine burying your babies after they have been blasted to pieces? Yet some people post here like nothing happened. Sick, horrible people.

Funny, the kind of folks that label themselves as "Pro-Life" and "Christian" in all their online presence were the most dismissive about the deaths of so many victims that still had baby-fat, and attacked those of us that sought sensible gun purchasing and ownership measures.

A friend of mine pointed out that if they didn't release them, it would seem like they were hiding something. After Nixon, people have a distrust of recordings and government.

    I won't be listening.
