State of the Union Open Thread. Update!

Here is the streaming video for those who do not have access to televisions.

I will be commenting as the speech proceeds, and I invite you to join me.

Update: Biden being Biden.

Perhaps the best part so far.

Beautiful moment,

Update: I think the President was pretty fired up over all, which must be difficult with only a 42% approval rating. He only talked briefly about gun violence, but he waxed poetic about green energy, ending the wars, increasing the minimum wage, and job creation.

Overall it was pretty damn impressive.

Now, release the pundits.

Update: Here come the clowns.

Boehner looks like he asked the tanner for "extra crispy" today. He is darker than the President!! When the President talked about negotiating with foes, they showed little Johnny McCain trying hard to "smile". Looks like he was gritting his teeth. Unless I missed it, all I heard was that natural gas is the way to go. I didn't hear wind power, geothermal, solar - all CLEAN ways to power our country. Of course, all of these only bring in money in building the infrastructure, not in the monthly bill to have wind, earth heat, sun heat...duh! Forgot that if it doesn't make money for the rich, then it simply is a no-go :(

This is the man I voted for.

My president was on FIRE tonight! His passion for equality and fairness shone like a bright light. His commitment to kids was front and center. His open admiration of his wife, our wonderful First Lady was unabashed.

His calling out the recalcitrant congress was a thing of beauty! He didn't pull his punches, rather he evicerated the GOP with MASTERFUL strokes of intelligence and genious. He was feisty, challenging the GOP to get off their collective asses and DO something, and if they don't, he's going to proceed with his own power and authority.

I could nearly hear the heads exploding over there...'dictator!...tyrant!', you can be sure those were just a couple of adjectives that were screeched.

This was a barnburner of an address. No more Mr. Nice Guy, it's brass knuckes inside of velvet gloves, so get ready GOP, you have been warned, called out and nailed by the President of the United States, Barack Hussein Obama.

    GRAND FUCKING SLAM!

...Contrary to what Republicans think, there was nothing socialistic about the president’s address. The speech was one of the more liberal SOTUs that any president has delivered in decades. Gone was the pipedream of reaching across the aisle bipartisanship. The flowery let’s work together language has been replaced by a president willing to act alone to give the American people what they want.

This address was a grand slam. It touched on most of the major social and economic areas that the majority of the country can agree on. The president’s remarks mentioned marriage equality, immigration reform, equal pay for women, economic inequality, education, climate change, alternative energy, closing Gitmo, and jobs. His remarks were a virtual Democratic checklist of important issues.

The proof that America is moving left can be found in this State Of The Union. Talk of tax cuts, deficit reduction, and spending cuts was nowhere to be found. America is becoming a liberal nation, and the stale ideas of the GOP are holding the nation back. Barack Obama was speaking the words that his changing nation wants to hear. America is changing and growing, and Obama’s leadership is delivering real change that you can believe in.

Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) challenged tea party conservatives in his response on their behalf to President Barack Obama's State of the Union address on Tuesday to move "from protest to progress" and to start focusing on constructive solutions for the country's problems, rather than fixating on what they oppose.
Lee used the example of the American Revolution, a favorite touchstone of many conservatives, to illustrate his point. The Boston Tea Party, he pointed out, came 14 years before the Constitutional Convention created the U.S. Constitution in Philadelphia.

"Fortunately for all of us, those early patriots moved on from Boston and moved past their protest against the government they didn’t want," Lee said. "They marched forward on a road toward the kind of government they did want.

"In America, the test of any political movement is not what that movement is against, but what it is for," Lee said. "The founders made a point at Boston Harbor, but they made history in Philadelphia’s Independence Hall."

The hosts of MSNBC’s prime time lineup, including Chris Matthews and Rachel Maddow, warmly praised President Barack Obama at the close of his fifth State of the Union address on Tuesday night. Matthews called the speech a “masterful” performance while Maddow remarked about the president’s energy and “playful” jabs at Republican members of Congress.

“A masterful address by the president,” Matthews said moments after Obama concluded. “A speech which I believe reminds many of the people who voted for him why they voted for him.”

“The greatness of the speech, I believe, was the ability to mask — actually to deliver a center-left proposal for lots of government action in the language of the center-right even,” he continued. “I thought it was a very nationalistic speech, a very American speech.”

“I was struck by how energetic he was,” Maddow said of Obama’s demeanor. “Almost playful, joshing a little bit with the Speaker of the House. Making a few jokes. He seemed comfortable in his own skin.”

She added that the speech was, at times, “moving,” particularly a moment when he highlighted the story of a soldier who was wounded in action abroad and the “sustained ovation” that solider received from the assembled guests.

What do your actions say about you as a person? Because that is the only way any of us can ever judge each other.”

Kluwe went on to say that if fundamentalism is allowed to rise, the United States could become something similar to the theocracy in Iran.

“You can’t say no to this theocracy and then try to impose your own theocracy. That doesn’t make sense,” Kluwe said.

It appears they are so used to getting away with telling people what they need to hear to retain power and control over them, they simply don't know how to adjust to an informed and more in-tuned society. They still haven't figured out that our ability to communicate quickly with one another is their Achilles's Heel.

Cathy Rodgers is the new sarah palin only intelligent and able to speak coherently. She has a special needs child and two other kids. I bet her kids will go to college. Did you hear her say her DS son can read? Poor Trig still wears diapers and eats baby food, he's only 1 year younger than Cathy's son. I understand there are different degrees of DS but it's like no one bothered to get Trig the treatment and therapy he needed to achieve more. those palins just don't believe their kids should reach for the stars and become the best they can be.

Rodgers is just another anti-enironment, anti-women's rights, member of the GOP god squad.

She earned her BA from an unaccredited Christian college according to Wiki.

O/T GOP Congressman Michael Grimm Threatens To Kill Reporter During A Live News Broadcast

"It has really not been a good past 24 hours for the Republican Party. First, President Obama knocked it out of the park with his best State of the Union address of his presidency. After that, Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers completely bombed in her prime-time debut when giving the Republican response. On top of that, Tea Party lawmakers were busy calling President Obama a ‘Socialist dictator’ and calling for his impeachment.

Well, to add to the pile, Rep. Michael Grimm (R-NY), who is in the middle of an investigation into campaign-finance fraud, was approached by a reporter for television station NY1 after the State of the Union Tuesday night. Grimm only wanted to discuss the SOTU and provide typical Republican talking points in response. However, the reporter decided to ask him an additional question regarding the ongoing investigation. Grimm didn’t take too kindly to that, as you’ll see....

“Let me be clear to you, you ever do that to me again I’ll throw you off this f***ing balcony…No, no, you’re not man enough, you’re not man enough. I’ll break you in half. Like a boy.”

Let me remind you. This is an actual Congressman who serves in the United States House of Representatives. This isn’t a character from The Sopranos. What we saw in that video is a Congressman threaten to kill a news reporter on live TV..."

Sarah Palin Disrespects President Obama with Jealous, Racist SOTU Rant

"...Many say Sarah Palin is a has-been and irrelevant, but she perfectly embodies the problems of the modern day GOP. She is all hot rage and vague fear tactics, lots of accusations steeped in not so veiled southern strategy and no solutions, and most troubling of all, there is zero consistency in the policy positions. You can’t fear monger about big government while you try to use the IRS to harass rape victims. Sarah Palin is all bitter Obama hate and nothing else. Just like the entire modern day Republican Party.

Go ahead, laugh, because ultimately, this is what is behind every Republican politician right now. They are all Sarah Palin, some of them just manage to hide it better. They are the party of spoiled children who do nothing but point fingers at others and call names. That is their only contribution, and for that, they expect to be paid by you. "

I missed the open thread, but President Obama is clearly turning things around. The biggest laugh I got was the GOP actually found a female Stepford Wife to rebut the SOTU. With saving for college while working McDonalds, living on a farm and picking apples while dad drove a school bus and I forget what mom did.
Then she lived the American Dream. She married a military dude and had three kids, one with down syndrome, but she doesn't focus on what he can't do, she focuses on what he can do. Ooops forgot the "Gift from God".
Poor lady couldn't afford a match for the fireplace. The GOP is really tightening it's belts!
