Today we learn more about the news reporter who said "fuck it" and quit her job to run her cannabis club.

The news outlet Vice caught up with the now infamous Charlo Greene, to ask her a few questions.

Here are a few of her answers.

When did she start her business of selling marijuana?:

Charlo Greene: We purchased a business license on 4/20/2014!

When did she first start using weed in her personal life?:

I’m Alaskan. Alaskans smoke weed. (I have to say that there is a part of me that wants to argue with this, but I really can't say that she's wrong.) It just is what it is. But I first tried it when I was in high school, and I didn’t like it at all, so I quit completely and I just drank like, a ton, which is also a really big issue here in Alaska. It got to the point when I was in college that I’d been drinking so much I ended up not even going to class, I failed out of an entire semester and I took a really heavy course load. Out of seven classes, I failed all of them, except for gym, and that’s only because he felt sorry for me.

I knew that alcohol, as a vice, wasn’t going to allow me to become the person I was meant to be. So I needed something else to do that maybe wasn’t so harmful, and I picked up smoking weed. I went from failing an entire semester, to the next semester, and every semester after that, being on the Dean’s List. I graduated cum laude... And that’s because I was smoking weed! I sat my ass at home and did what I needed to do, and I never woke up with a hangover because of it, or got behind the wheel and ran over a family or anything because of it.

Wow, to here her tell it marijuana almost gives you super powers.

I have never seen a definitive study that suggests that smoking pot has a less deleterious effect on completing your school work than does alcohol consumption, but I will admit that I have never had to hold anybody's hair back while they vomited bong water.

Did she plan her big exit from KTVA? (Duh!):

Vice: Why did you decide to quit in such an extravagant fashion?

[Laughs] To draw attention to the issue. You, as a journalist, know that all of us are replaceable. The people aren’t really going to miss you, or me, or any random reporter for the most part. So why not just use the position I was put in to make sure that my next chapter is just wide open for me?

Can't argue with that logic.

What about that tweet from KTVA that she was fired?

[Laughs] Yeah. [Laughs some more] I saw that. That was stupid.

Her advice  to others thinking of quitting their jobs.

Do it big. If you’re going to quit your job, do it big. Why not? Your job probably sucks, so go ahead and get whatever you can out of it. If your job gives you access to information that might help wherever you’re going to go next, then get that! If you’re just a cog in this massive machine, and you know you’re replaceable, and you’re treated that way. Then replace them. Be brave. Be ballsy. And make sure you’re going to be okay afterwards.

There were a few naysayers yesterday suggesting that Greene had not only damaged her credibility by dropping the F bomb, but that she has also single handedly doomed the entire ordinance.

I have to say that hearing that really made me laugh.

Those people clearly know NOTHING about Alaskans.

We fucking love straight talkers who don't take any shit.

This young woman is right now just about one of the most popular people in our state, and I can guarantee that as new organizations start to cover our attempt to legalize marijuana that you will see that she will be their "go to girl" on getting the story.

Not only is she going to be famous, but once the ordinance passes and her cannabis club opens up she is going to have a line around the damn block.

Welcome to Alaska, where "fuck it" should be our state motto.

OR she could just discipline herself, get rid of ALL her vices and do what she is supposed to do without creating an excuse for her success or her failure -- except hard work.

Graduate Magna Cum Laude (crutch/vice free). For some strange reason, it worked for me drug and alcohol free.

Probably about 80% of Alaskans I have met were pretty copious MJ users. Always figured it had something to do with passing the long winters.

A close friend smoked marijuana all through his schooling (and even drank a little now and then). He has a doctoral degree AND medical degree from Harvard and is wildly successful. He still smokes o a regular basis.

For some reason pot smokers are the smuggest people on the planet. I grew up in the 60's and 70's in a very liberal college town. Everyone it seemed had a pot stash and thought that smoking weed made them so special and "in." The cutesy way they talked about it was nauseating. That's what's always turned me off about pot ever since, the smug culture around it and the attitude that smoking that shit makes you so superior. Ugh. Have never had any desire to smoke it, having had to breathe in so much of other's disgusting smoke. Phew. Nor did I feel the need to get high.

      Delete
    14. Anonymous2:41 PM

It's no long the 60s or the 70s. Legalizing marijuana would take away any and all residual smugness (not to mention the fact that a huge proportion of adults have tried it and many still use it).

I'd much rather here people talking about smoking weed than hear the "bros" talk about how wasted they were on beer.

It will cause vomiting, seizures, shut down their liver. Not a pleasant death and after legalizing of marijuana veterinarians saw an increase in these types of deaths with dogs

As far as use for people that falls in the "none of my business" category. But maybe if Brisket Palin smoked some weed instead of chugging the fire water she wouldn't be so violent.

According to the study described in those links, "many" equals 14 kids. And, in fact, there is reason to believe that parents whose children ingested marijuana before it became legal in Colorado were less likely to bring their kids to the emergency room because marijuana was illegal. So, I'm not 100% convinced of the numbers (I teach research methods at the college level, by the way).

Of course, any kids unintentionally ingesting marijuana is not a good thing. The same is true for kids unintentionally ingesting alcohol, eating cigarettes/chewing tobacco, or unintentionally getting drunk by licking hand sanitizer.

I fully support the efforts here in Colorado to better label and regulate edibles as well as educating people to keep their pets and children safe. We all want to keep pets and children safe.

But let's take a rational approach to this and not use scare tactics to undermine progress towards reasonable marijuana laws in this country.

We have about 6 non-legal states bordering us and the Highway Patrol and Feds have had their hands full stopping them on both sides of the borders. Many, many explosions and fires from the idiots making that liquid from using butane...lots of injuries and kids exposed. Because of the high taxes, it has illegal sales going sky-high! And remember, we have a huge population to draw from. Don't think the cruise ships will allow you back on with any! When my kids tried it their grades plummeted! As did their social behaviors and physical appearance. It is still Federally illegal and they can be arrested and thrown in jail. We have had many auto accidents while driving buzzed. Now you don't just have to worry about the drunks but those who are stoned on the roads also, too! There are no long lines around the blocks anymore and several shops have closed. Sales taxes soared but are now plummeting. Meth sales have picked up again! Good luck!

I have to say I don't like the model she is setting here with her answers as too pot use. Just because she felt she was more tune to her education using pot and being successful doesn't mean everyone that uses pot get the same reaction from it. There are many 'potheads' that just become lazy from the use. I guess it depends on what kind of pot you choose, seems there are so many different strains of it. My son smokes it and doesn't drink but he just loves eating after having it which has brought on weight gain for him. I think it always comes down to the amount you use, whether it be alcohol or mary jane and how it effects you. I have to say I think this woman by quitting the way she did was trying to boost her future business on the air. But this is how things are done in the U.S.A.

"In their new poll of Alaska voters, PPP added one extra question about the Great Wasillabilly Bumfight of 2014:

Who do you think were the instigators of the brawl between the Palins and another family at a recent party: the Palins or the other parties involved?

While the majority of respondents answered “Not Sure” — and we’re fairly certain this includes a large portion of Alaskans who fear that expressing an opinion would get their car tires slashed — "

Not to be Ms. Science Smarty Pants here, but in this discussion about the medical benefits of marijuana, the actual impact it has on the brain is often overlooked.

Marijuana (and alcohol) are drugs that alter the dopamine receptors in our brains and actually end up damaging or even destroying those receptors in the long run. The body seeks balance - homeostasis - so as use continues, more of the substance is needed to produce the same effect (in laymen's terms, this is known as tolerance.)

Drugs overwhelm the dopamine reward system. And, in the end, as tolerance builds, drugs then become the ONLY thing that make you feel good. And sadly, it's just temporary. And eventually, NO drugs will provide relief because the system is just fubarred.

The biochemical soup is a delicate mix that gets screwed up by stress - big and small. Couple that with the sad state of our food supply and our basic diet of nutritionally devoid food-like substances - it's no wonder we're all looking for relief wherever we can find it.

Not to go all Miss Kumbiya on ya'll either but you can put your brain back into balance by eating a whole food diet, doing regular and vigorous exercises. Interval training naturally produces the same chemicals as marijuana without overwhelming the dopamine system. Last but not least, meditation is proving to be more effective in relieving depression and anxiety than any drugs available on or off the market. No mystery about this. Learning to quiet and control some of the 70,000 plus thoughts we have each day actual adds to our grey matter. Drinkers and dope smokers just reduce the size of their brains. Those are the facts, my friends.

MJ is not addictive, therefore the system can not be 'fubarred'. It's a natural herb that stays in your system for months because it's non-toxic. Your body will reject hard drugs and alcohol because it's poison.

can you enlighten us on that? Also, too? Oh and don't forget all the new drugs made from old frugs Chantix, Wellbutrin, prozac etc.
And you know the facts that Big Pharma drugs kill people all the time vs. pot which hasn't killed anyone or the FED gov has a patent pending of "Cannabis"?

    6. Anonymous1:44 PM

@1:04- yes. I'm not a pot smoker, and I avoid drugs of the Pharma variety if I can. Watch a TV commercial for some drug they want you to take for something they want you to believe is killing you. The side effect panel is delivered in a monotone, quick voiceover. Usually, it includes, "death". Nobody ever died from marijuana and I bet the side effect list reads something like, "May cause the munchies, dry mouth and sleepiness."

    7. @ 12:47, don't go with the "it's a natural substance" argument. Opium is a natural substance, and it will damn sure "fubar" your system. Geranium root and white oleander are totally "natural" and trust me, that doesn't mean you want to indiscriminately stuff either one in your pot-hole. (Geddit? POT HOLE? Hold the applause, I'm here all week)

I am absolutely pro legalization. I think freeing up the criminality of pot will allow law enforcement to focus on the areas which have been out of control for decades.

I do not imbibe personally, but I do not think anyone with cancer or glaucoma should have to fear federal level retribution just for trying to live life without utter misery from chemo or other harsh drugs. I can't imagine anyone who has watched someone go through chemotherapy and ISN'T pro legalization.

But still, the "it's nacherrrrulll, duuuude!" argument doesn't hold water for me. Or m&ms, fritos, twinkies, pizza, or tacos. ;)

Sorry Gryphen, I disagree. I'm 50 years old, Alaska born and raised, leaning towards pro-legalization..............and both my husband and I were turned off by this woman's action and her language. It makes logical and statistical sense to me to legalize pot, however, seeing this young woman makes me think, wow, I really don't think I like the people in this movement...........I don't want to help make this jerky girl get rich from her "freedom movement". I'm no fan of alcohol, but at least I've never known a bar owner to make the claim that he's in the sin business as a public service! Unfortunately, this girl is now "the Alaska face" of the pro-pot movement, and I find her very unlikeable.

Agree 1:01. I also feel we have enough of a "fuck it" society now as it is.

I've smoked, it's legal here, but to pretend it's completely harmless or not a crutch to many people, or claim "high functioning" people do it so it's fine, is just nuts.

Like alcohol, it is mind/mood altering. (You might keep in mind the troubles we have with booz) Too many don't use it responsibly, so while I don't care what people do in their own homes, I do care that I drive alongside these people every rush hour, and believe me rush hour has never been the same since legalization.

So smoke, fine, but don't romanticize it. Let's not make it the "cool" thing to do. Just be responsible.

    5. Anonymous6:55 PM

If this ordinance were only about people seeking pain relief then of course I would vote yes. I have a history of voting YES on Marijuana initiatives. I'm not exactly sure what this ordinance is all about at this point.............I've been told that it will allow stores to sell marijuana-laced cookies, brownies, candy, etc., and I've seen packaging that appears to be aimed directly at kids. Do I think that pot is bad compared to alcohol, absolutely not, but on the other hand, I think it's a stupid habit and would not want my own kids to waste their money and their bodies on it. You can say it's harmless, but I'm afraid that as the child of a tobacco smoker, I can't believe that to be the case at all, simply because most people suck it into their lungs. And I've known people who were both highly functioning on pot and others who wasted their lives away on it. I also have two close relatives who definitely ARE addicted to it, and it's an extremely expensive habit for them. I'm just saying that the former KTVA reporter has done nothing to make me move to the YES side on this particular initiative, but she is definitely a turn-off to a person like me, and in a close election it could push some fence-sitters to the NO side.

Nowhere. No one is outlawing alcohol despite the RIDICULOUS number of deaths and abuse.

Well, considering the apparently bad behavior of the YES people who showed up to testify here in Anchorage last night on the marijuana initiative, I'm going to go out on a limb and predict that it's going to fail. I'm still not sure how I'm going to vote (haven't researched it enough yet), but there appears to be a vocal group of YES people who just can't seem to understand the concept that "you catch more flies with honey than vinegar". Mead Treadwell (who I'm sure is against the initiative) has brilliantly scheduled meetings all across the state where rude, in-your-face YES supporters can be seen by the media, who then report it all to the voting public by tv, newspaper, and the internet. Free advertising for the NO people! I had thought that this initiative had a really good shot at passing, but it's supporters appear to be their own worst enemy.

From the Alaska Dispatch: Restraining order filed against former reporter turned internet star: A neighbor of former KTVA Channel 11 reporter Charlo Greene -- who abruptly turned marijuana activist/viral internet star when she quit live on-air Sunday -- told the gossip website TMZ Tuesday that he filed a restraining order against her earlier in September after a conflict stemming from marijuana smoke. Greene’s former neighbor Tyler Gilbrech told TMZ that Greene moved into the same apartment complex as him in June. Soon after, “she immediately started stinking up the place with so much reefer...his 4-yr-old daughter became violently sick from the fumes seeping through the walls,” he told TMZ. Records show Gilbrech filed for and was granted a protective order against Greene, whose legal name is Charlene Egbe, on Sept. 10. The restraining order Gilbrech filed against Greene does not mention marijuana but accuses her of blocking his driveway, yelling and making threats.

Perhaps people here should be fighting to outlaw alcohol along with voting "no" to legalize marijuana. And please start fighting for making tobacco illegal as well. Both alcohol and cigarettes are marketed toward young people and have hurt and killed many, many, MANY more people than marijuana could ever hurt or kill. But, somehow, only marijuana can get you locked up as an adult simply for enjoying it in the privacy of your own home.

I support her in every way. And, living with a pot smoker who is an incredibly high-functioning, extremely successful professional I find the idea that pot smoking makes people lose ambition and become psychotic utterly bizarre. And, the “fuck it” comment made my day. I remember feeling the same way about a job I was devoted to for almost two decades when the newly hired boss was obviously incompetent. One day most of us got up and essentially did the same thing. Very freeing! Then they fired him for losing a successful team of people! Very satisfying!

I smoked pot in high school and college, but I wasn't anywhere near being a "pothead", After awhile it did nothing for me but make me paranoid. I've used alcohol socially and neither of them have been a "Crutch".
When I was undergoing radiation/chemotherapy, nothing helped the side effects of nausea, loss of appetite, vertigo and insomnia until the doctor prescribed an extract of cannabis in a time release capsule form that I needed to hire a lawyer and jump through all kinds of hoops to get a hold of, and I did very well with it and credit it with helping my body fight back.
I loved how this woman handled her career change and decision to quit on air. "F it" wasn't offensive to me, and think it would be a great motto for a lot of states, especially Pennsylvania.
Not because of the people who live here, but because of the mental midget governor we have in office.

Due to health issues that began in 2005 and progressively worsened, my husband has been on medical marijuana for going on two years now because nothing else helped. We also have a personal grow operation, with Oregon's permission, in our garage. At 57, I never in my wildest dreams thought my life would end up this way. There are times I could pull the whole thing up by its roots and I grow so tired of my husband being high all the time, not to mention the electricity and water bill increases.

That being said, I was also raised in the opinion that those people who cussed were lazy in their vocabulary but there are times when it's the only phrase appropriate.

I grew up in Alaska where alcohol was literally everywhere and pot was just beginning to make a huge impact. This started in the mid-60s. Now, being in the entertainment field, I saw first hand, at a VERY young age, the effect alcohol has on human beings. Liquid courage. Because of such drunken people, my life was in danger many times (weapons) and I have been assaulted because of certain drunken monsters. Thus, I CHOSE to never drink and have never been drunk.

That said, let's go to pot. After some idiot gave me a joint with PCP in it (almost died), I never smoked that shit again. All the stoners I knew back then (now in their 60s and 70s) are still pretty much still their old selves as aged hippies and living off government subsidies, waiting for social security to kick in. But this is a generalization. I'm pretty there's many a professional doing doobies at home or elsewhere (doctors, lawyers, teachers, etc.)

Medical marijuana? Definitely has benefits - I hear. But personally I've lived through many, many surgeries, near death at times, and never felt the need to get blitzed on pot. The painkillers did that; however, after becoming addicted to them, I had to go cold turkey.

However, I understand where pot is helpful to people with terminal illness and say issues such as PTSD. Comparing pot with painkillers, there's no debate really that pot has much less devastating effect than painkillers and alcohol.

I say, 'pick your poison'. However, smoking pot, like alcohol, still puts you 'under the influence'. Not one to judge anyone else, really - just don't kill me or my precious loved ones because of your personal issues that make you feel just fine to get behind the wheel of a vehicle because you don't have a care in the world because you're either drunk or stoned.

An after note here; if you ever seen the movie "The Frozen Ground" whereas the police officer Floethe (played by Nicholas Cage) describes how he misses his sister, Sandy. That same Sandy was my best friend in high school. She was killed by a drunk driver and her mother was paralyzed (1972). I'll never forget the Monday in shorthand class where Sandy and I shared a desk and the teacher announced Sandy died over the weekend because of a drunk driver. We were told she was ejected from the vehicle, but Floethe (Cage) says in the movie that it took two hours to her out. So this is news to me but the memory of her death is as fresh as the day I got the news. Devastating.

Also, just as a side note, I've seen ex-governors of Alaska and others of their political ilk drunken out of their minds like sailors on leave. It was part of my entertainment experience (band). This does not include Sarah, but you'd be surprised who hits the sauce and resides in 'high places' (pun intended) besides the Palin tribe. What Sarah and her family consumes in drugs/alcohol/pot should be of no surprise to Alaskan residents - hell, they're ALL doing it themselves!
