The dangers of social media and why we should all be sad to see the end of HBO's "The Newsroom."

I remember when this happened, and when I recoiled in horror at what these amateur sleuths had done in response to that terrible Boston Marathon bombing.

If you remember there was misinformation coming from all directions, much of it driven by the Right Wing mistrust of the government and their absolute certainty that the Obama administration was covering an attack by a known terrorist group.

Hell Glenn Beck was even sued for defamation after making up some insane conspiracy theories.

The Newsroom does something quite unique, and in my opinion quite necessary.

It not only holds puts the media on notice for its cowardice in reporting uncomfortable facts, or for cowering in the face of the conservative forces. It also holds up a mirror so that the public can see themselves revealed for their willingness to be poorly served by our politicians and our media, and how easily we allow ourselves to be manipulated by fear mongering or directed by our prejudices.

I for one will greatly miss what The Newsroom brings to the debate.

I love this series. It is, without doubt, the best and most significant television series ever done. A kind of intense television newsroom self examination. No wonder it will only air for three seasons while vampires, strange furry-dressed adventures, trash like the Kardashians and so on will go on forever.

I find it interesting that the New York Times has had almost nothing to say about "The Newsroom." For the final season opener, there are just one or two sentences in the regular Sunday evening lineup. But, there are dvds available for the first two seasons. I ordered mine from Amazon.

As a former reporter, I can tell you that this is what a newsroom really was like. Everyone in the chain of command was intensely focused on facts, working against a deadline, paying attention to every detail to make sure it was accurate and fit into the whole. It was an exhausting yet exhilarating process. Only those people who really cared about "the Fourth Estate" could last for long with the pressure. Those who did were complete professionals.

The Labor Department classifies journalists as "assembly line workers," and that's what they were, and still are in the few news outlets that produce a real product. Fox News: probably described as "fiction writers."

    1. Fiction writers would e their sub-title. Their actual title would be Republican Operatives and lobbying arm of the Party.

Thanks, 5:46 AM, news today is NOTHING like it used to be. Both on TV and in print.

  3. Gryph, you made me think about a program I used to watch in the 60's called "That Was The Week That Was".
Here is a clip from 1963 BBC original version. Try to do this, today! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6NtmGlvHbqA
The American version was good, but not quite as biting as its British predecessor. Too bad it only lasted two years.

Why I love The Newsroom. Not only is it immensely fun and entertaining but it is very smart. You have to work for it. I usually watch each episode at least twice because I always miss some nuance, some bit of brilliance, that goes by at warp speed. And, because I get validation of my WTF? moments of recent American history.

I'm so disappointed The Newsroom production is ceasing. It's so good and so needed in our country! Why, why, why? It's ratings have been good. Don't understand and wish I could have been a fly on the wall as to the discussion.

Twitter is dangerous because of bullies. Look at all the people here who bully on twitter, and harass.

You'd FLIP OUT if a conservative did what you all do

Have you watched "The Newsroom"? That's what we're talking about here and no one is bullying anyone.

Making assumptions that newsroom viewers are Twitter bullies. Most Conservatives just make shit up.

Sad to see it go. We went on a tour of 30 rock and ABC and got to watch "brainstorming" and "culling" stories to air, Newsroom reminded me so much of what goes on behind the scenes and how easily people can be manipulated to report in a biased way with nothing but number of "likes" on social media.
So, when are the Kardashians leaving the air? What, exactly, is their contribution to entertainment? culture? news? etc.

I had this same feeling when "six feet under" was taken off, but newsroom was something worth watching. It had substance and backbone.

Now we're left with unfiltered this -------------
