By signing that letter to Iran newly minted Senator Joni Ernst might have just opened herself up to a court martial.

Courtesy of the Daily Kos:

Lt. Col. Joni Ernst, the junior senator from Iowa, is a lieutenant colonel in the Iowa Army National Guard. As such, she is bound by the Iowa State Code of Military Justice. Her signing of the seditious letter to Iran is a clear and direct violation of Chapter 29B.85 of the Iowa State Code of Military Justice

29B.85 CONTEMPT TOWARD OFFICIALS.

Any person subject to this code who uses contemptuous words against the president, the governor, or the governor of any other state, territory, commonwealth, or possession in which that person may be serving, shall be punished as a court-martial may direct.

Well now isn't THAT interesting?

Ernst of course is not the ONLY Senator who might have reason to regret signing that letter.

John McCain does not seem terribly thrilled with his decision either:

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), one of the signers of the controversial letter to Iran’s leadership, admitted Tuesday night that the letter might not have been the way to express frustration that President Obama isn’t working with Congress on nuclear negotiations with Tehran.

“What that letter did was tell the Iranians that whatever deal they make, the Congress of the United States will play a role,” he said on Fox News’s “On the Record with Greta van Susteren.”

“Maybe that wasn’t the best way to do that, but I think the Iranians should know that the Congress of the United States has to play a role in whether an agreement of this magnitude.”

“It’s also symptomatic between the total lack of trust that exists now between we Republicans and the president,” he said.

“This has established a poisoned environment here which sometimes causes us to react maybe in not the most effective fashion.”

Perhaps somebody needs to remind this old fossil that it was NOT President Obama who fired the first round in the war with the Republicans they started that skirmish the night of his inauguration:

On the night of Barack Obama’s inauguration, a group of top GOP luminaries quietly gathered in a Washington steakhouse to lick their wounds and ultimately create the outline of a plan for how to deal with the incoming administration.

“The room was filled. It was a who’s who of ranking members who had at one point been committee chairmen, or in the majority, who now wondered out loud whether they were in the permanent minority,” Frank Luntz, who organized the event, told FRONTLINE.

Among them were Senate power brokers Jim DeMint, Jon Kyl and Tom Coburn, and conservative congressmen Eric Cantor, Kevin McCarthy and Paul Ryan.

After three hours of strategizing, they decided they needed to fight Obama on everything. The new president had no idea what the Republicans were planning.

I defy John McCain to explain how ANY President is supposed to work toward compromise with THAT sort of entrenched oppostion.

This Iran letter is just the latest example of the kind of uncooperative, underhanded, and even treasonous behavior exhibited by members of the Republican party since the very day this President was sworn into office.

I have no sympathy for her. EVERYONE in the military knows the line that cannot be crossed.

A person at her level of "leadership" within the military has NO EXCUSE for ignorance.

If she is that "ignorant" about the basics of military protocol, then she should be reduced to a rank more in line with her knowledge (or lack there of).

She won't be held to account for this letter. No one will. We don't prosecute politicians for this kind of thing in America. If it had been a sex scandal--that'd be a different story, but treason is just too petty to bother with. Besides, Democrats know they'll lose the White House one day and they don't want to be held to a high standard either.

    3. That was a great article about McCain. I believe the Republican party's defiance of ever working with President Obama and obstructing everything he has tried to do has given President Obama no other recourse except to move ahead without them. They want to be in the majority and as usual get nothing done except act like big babies, then they got exactly what they asked for! Stop bellyaching and whining already or get out of Congress. My hat is off to President Obama! In spite of the Republican bullsh*t, President Obama will go in history as one of the best presidents. And the Republicans will go in history is a bunch of whiling idiots who played all kinds of games and were paid for not doing their jobs! They need to fired!

  4. There is no legal compulsion for the President to consult or negotiate with Congress on his dealings with Iran. He is completely within his authority under the office of President. Considering how they've treated him for six years, they're lucky he doesn't ignore them completely. But they have no right to but into this. It isn't a treaty and he's not lifting sanctions. Congress has very little to say in what the President is doing. They may want to be an equal player and be consulted on every little thing but there is nothing in the Constitution that forces the President to do that. I'm rather glad he's slapping them upside the head with "this is none of your business, back off." I just with the Justice Dept. would serve 47 warrants.

If Joni Ernst is still in the national guard, by all means, courts martial her. She is in defiance and violation of the military code.

As for McCain, the hot head isn't the first to try to walk back his irresponsible actions. This isn't the only hot headed decision he's made without thoroughly thinking through the fall out. I'll say to him what I'd say to Rand Paul, also trying to take back his signature: if the letter was meant for the President, it should have been sent to Pennsylvania Ave., not Iran.

He's probably clueless, since he's not up on Alaska things living out of state so much, but Alaska has the highest percentage of military connected residents of any state.

Lots of veterans and active duty here who won't be pleased that someone in the military signed a letter to a foreign government who is considered our enemy.

To think that they're trying to chortle and joke their way out of it is disgusting. Do Republicans never pause to think about the consequences of their actions? These are sensitive negotiations that have been going on for YEARS. They involve the major countries of the world trying to come together to keep the peace in the Middle East.
