Courtesy of the Daily Kos:
Lt. Col. Joni Ernst, the junior senator from Iowa, is a lieutenant colonel in the Iowa Army National Guard. As such, she is bound by the Iowa State Code of Military Justice. Her signing of the seditious letter to Iran is a clear and direct violation of Chapter 29B.85 of the Iowa State Code of Military Justice.
29B.85 CONTEMPT TOWARD OFFICIALS.
Any person subject to this code who uses contemptuous words against the president, the governor, or the governor of any other state, territory, commonwealth, or possession in which that person may be serving, shall be punished as a court-martial may direct.
Well now isn't THAT interesting?
Ernst of course is not the ONLY Senator who might have reason to regret signing that letter.
John McCain does not seem terribly thrilled with his decision either:
Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), one of the signers of the controversial letter to Iran’s leadership, admitted Tuesday night that the letter might not have been the way to express frustration that President Obama isn’t working with Congress on nuclear negotiations with Tehran.
“What that letter did was tell the Iranians that whatever deal they make, the Congress of the United States will play a role,” he said on Fox News’s “On the Record with Greta van Susteren.”
“Maybe that wasn’t the best way to do that, but I think the Iranians should know that the Congress of the United States has to play a role in whether an agreement of this magnitude.”
“It’s also symptomatic between the total lack of trust that exists now between we Republicans and the president,” he said.
“This has established a poisoned environment here which sometimes causes us to react maybe in not the most effective fashion.”
Perhaps somebody needs to remind this old fossil that it was NOT President Obama who fired the first round in the war with the Republicans they started that skirmish the night of his inauguration:
On the night of Barack Obama’s inauguration, a group of top GOP luminaries quietly gathered in a Washington steakhouse to lick their wounds and ultimately create the outline of a plan for how to deal with the incoming administration.
“The room was filled. It was a who’s who of ranking members who had at one point been committee chairmen, or in the majority, who now wondered out loud whether they were in the permanent minority,” Frank Luntz, who organized the event, told FRONTLINE.
Among them were Senate power brokers Jim DeMint, Jon Kyl and Tom Coburn, and conservative congressmen Eric Cantor, Kevin McCarthy and Paul Ryan.
After three hours of strategizing, they decided they needed to fight Obama on everything. The new president had no idea what the Republicans were planning.
I defy John McCain to explain how ANY President is supposed to work toward compromise with THAT sort of entrenched oppostion.
This Iran letter is just the latest example of the kind of uncooperative, underhanded, and even treasonous behavior exhibited by members of the Republican party since the very day this President was sworn into office.
I have no sympathy for her. EVERYONE in the military knows the line that cannot be crossed.
ReplyDeleteA person at her level of "leadership" within the military has NO EXCUSE for ignorance.
If she is that "ignorant" about the basics of military protocol, then she should be reduced to a rank more in line with her knowledge (or lack there of).
Joni Ernst is too ignorant to be in the military or in the US Senate. There is no excuse for her not to be court martialed.
DeleteShe should be court martialed for treason, I hear Leaenworth is nice this time of yr.
DeleteIgnorance of the law is never a defense- bye bye Joni, another female rising star in the republican party crashes and burns,
DeleteShe won't be held to account for this letter. No one will. We don't prosecute politicians for this kind of thing in America. If it had been a sex scandal--that'd be a different story, but treason is just too petty to bother with. Besides, Democrats know they'll lose the White House one day and they don't want to be held to a high standard either.
DeleteCorrection, 8:54 PM. We don't prosecute REPUBLICAN politicians for this kind of thing.
DeleteToo petty?
DeleteWeakening the authority of the president publically is too petty?
The petition for Violation of the Logan Act is currently at
ReplyDelete247k and I'm sure growing the more these fools keep talking!
Arizona editorial questioning McCain's judgement, not just from the letter, but from picking Sarah Palin for VP.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.azcentral.com/story/lindavaldez/2015/03/12/iran-letter-shows-mccains-bad-judgment/70213106/
Good to see Arizona editorial going after him - he's deserved it for so many years. Hopefully, he'll die before he comes up for reelection or is not plain out and out not reelected!
DeleteI still think that the Palin name should also be put on his tombstone!
Caroll Thanks for the link.
DeleteMandatory reading, folks. It is good to see how the Arizona papers see McCain (and Palin).
There is a paywall, but you can read the article for free and without signing up. Just hit the X to close the paywall thing.
That was a great article about McCain. I believe the Republican party's defiance of ever working with President Obama and obstructing everything he has tried to do has given President Obama no other recourse except to move ahead without them. They want to be in the majority and as usual get nothing done except act like big babies, then they got exactly what they asked for! Stop bellyaching and whining already or get out of Congress. My hat is off to President Obama! In spite of the Republican bullsh*t, President Obama will go in history as one of the best presidents. And the Republicans will go in history is a bunch of whiling idiots who played all kinds of games and were paid for not doing their jobs! They need to fired!
DeleteThere is no legal compulsion for the President to consult or negotiate with Congress on his dealings with Iran. He is completely within his authority under the office of President. Considering how they've treated him for six years, they're lucky he doesn't ignore them completely. But they have no right to but into this. It isn't a treaty and he's not lifting sanctions. Congress has very little to say in what the President is doing. They may want to be an equal player and be consulted on every little thing but there is nothing in the Constitution that forces the President to do that. I'm rather glad he's slapping them upside the head with "this is none of your business, back off." I just with the Justice Dept. would serve 47 warrants.
ReplyDeleteIf Joni Ernst is still in the national guard, by all means, courts martial her. She is in defiance and violation of the military code.
As for McCain, the hot head isn't the first to try to walk back his irresponsible actions. This isn't the only hot headed decision he's made without thoroughly thinking through the fall out. I'll say to him what I'd say to Rand Paul, also trying to take back his signature: if the letter was meant for the President, it should have been sent to Pennsylvania Ave., not Iran.
O.T. (not sure first post worked) http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-marine-jail-georgia-20150312-story.html
ReplyDeleteHow typically Republican of McCain to create a toxic environment and then complain about the toxic environment as though it's the other guy's fault.
ReplyDeleteJust like when they refused to participate in designing healthcare reform and then complained that they didn't get to participate in designing healthcare reform.
I swear they're all toddlers. Way past time to vote in some adults.
G-I-T-M-O
ReplyDeleteCould it be any clearer that the GOP are trying their very best to tear down the country they purport to love? Every day it's something else. Every day it's obvious to rational thinkers that they hate not only their President, but the very foundations on which their own country was built. It is to weep.....
ReplyDeleteIOKIYAR. Treason? No problem! Sedition? Just another day in D.C. Has everyone forgotten that? Nothing will happen to any of them. Nothing.
ReplyDeleteThe only way for Americans to handle these despicable Republicans is to not reelect them and not put more Republicans into office on the federal, state and local levels. They have not served the people that elected them. All they've done is spread hate, obstruction and racism.
ReplyDeleteThank god, President Obama has been able to stand up to them and lead in such a wonderful way. I'm so glad I voted for him both times.
Good luck with that.
DeleteThey've gerrymandered enough stupid to keep getting re-elected.
3:49, they certainly have, haven't they? Depressing to see how our democracy has been undermined.
DeleteM from MD
Senator voting is state wide, so gerrymandering is not an issue there. But they still took over the Senate. Too many Democratic candidates are craven And tone deaf.
DeleteShe'd look good in an orange jumpsuit, and doing the 'perp walk.
ReplyDeleteDan Sullivan is a lieutenant colonel in the Marine guard, right? What does the Alaska Code of Military Justice say about this?
ReplyDeleteHis service is listed as:

Traitor!
I posted the first comment about Ernst knowing better. It goes double for Dan Sullivan. Especially since he's a lawyer.
DeleteI was going to send him a letter I'm so irritated at him. I'll copy it to command.
He's probably clueless, since he's not up on Alaska things living out of state so much, but Alaska has the highest percentage of military connected residents of any state.
Lots of veterans and active duty here who won't be pleased that someone in the military signed a letter to a foreign government who is considered our enemy.
Especially since the letter is an attack on the Commander in Chief.
Dan recently resigned his position. But as a military person (in active service or not) and as a lawyer, he certainly knew better and cannot claim ignorance.
DeleteI believe I heard a story on Juneau radio say Sullivan's commission was with the California guard before he resigned it and had nothing to do with Alaska Guard. Sorry if that turns out to be inaccurate.
DeleteA bunch of idiots.
ReplyDeleteThat would be good news. I would like to see a trend. So sick of the crap and going on and on with the propaganda pretending to want America secure when it is still the fight for oil, drug money and human trafficking (why rich white dudes have to fight and use troops and citizens)
ReplyDeleteHow long until Sarah and Bristol have their clothing line to sell the abstinence ideology?

ReplyDeleteUtah's available for that.

ReplyDeleteHave you ever seen the prison at Leavenworth?
DeleteNOT a friendly looking place. Spooky, spooky.
It would be so cute for Bristol to have her abstinence/pro-life line of clothing bullshit at the same time Dakota is dressing people who are all for killing people like Micheal Moore and collateral damage anyone that is in the way of being outgunned. The "power couple". I am sure that is what they mean by "power couple" they can make the most money off their ideologies. They will need a PAC, like Sarah so they can pretend to run for office.
ReplyDeleteCan't stand her, plus what she spews as fact defending this action makes no sense and is completely wrong. http://www.kmaland.com/news/ernst-defends-iran-letter/article_a5f2fefc-c821-11e4-b502-fb0e5cbe853d.html
ReplyDeleteHowever, I think she would have to be on active duty to fall under military rule and she isn't...more's the pity.
if she is drilling and getting a paycheck for it, she is considered active duty reserve and as such is bound by the rules of her service.
DeleteAnd then there is Alaska's own real weasel, Dan Sullivan. He seems to have been sleeping when the Logan Act and the separation of powers were discussed at Georgetown Law School. With shoddy understanding like that, Alaska needs to re-evaluate his legal work while attorney general. q

ReplyDeleteThank you, Iran, for laughing at it. In the sorry state of this country, they will never be prosecuted for it.
"power couple" is the laugh of the day. There could not be 2 more weak people. All the pumped up inflating them is no more effective then Sarah Palin's flotation devices and ass-clown comic butt. They just look more and more like cheap cartoons.
DeleteIf Meyer had half of one ball he would not have to have someone run his social media like a fascist. What is American about that? Pitiful Nancy French blog can't even deal with any truth, Sarah cut off comments there.

ReplyDeleteJOB ONE IS TO HELP OUR NEWLY ELECTED PRESIDENT OBAMA GET OUR COUNTRY OUT OF A RECESSION AND BACK ON HER FEET!
ReplyDeleteARE YOU WITH ME?
WHAT? WHAT DO YOU MEAN WE HAVE ANOTHER OBJECTIVE?
McConnell: The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president.
BUT WHAT ABOUT OUR COUNTRY? IF WE MAKE PRESIDENT OBAMA FAIL THEN OUR COUNTRY FAILS.
WHAT DO YOU MEAN I'M EITHER WITH YOU OR AGAINST YOU?
Thank you, Gryphen, for reminding people about that awful, hateful, conspiratorial meeting.
ReplyDeleteThe Repugs always act like it never happened every time they whine about Obama "opposing," "disrespecting" and/or finding legistlative ways to get around dealing with THEM.
Joni Ernst is a POS! Dumb as a post. She picked the wrong horse. Karma will take her down.hard!
ReplyDeleteTraitor!
Me thinks traitor Lt. Col. Joni Ernst, the junior senator from Iowa and the other 46 Traitors needs to thank President Obama for eliminating "Waterboarding" .
ReplyDeleteMaybe President Obama stopped it a little too soon.
How can Lt. Col. Joni Ernst, the junior senator from Iowa lead American troops if Lt. Col. Joni Ernst is a traitor to her Commander-In-Chief and to the United States of America?
ReplyDeleteBut I didn't have time to read the ah letter to the ah Ayatollah of Iran. I was in a rush to ah leave town before the ah snowstorm. I thought the ah letter was a greetings from the Republican Senators.
ReplyDeleteI don't know what the fuck I'm doing. I'm just a dumbass freshman politician cloaked with the Sarah Palin Curse.
They tell me to go here, I go here.
They tell me to go there, I go there.
They tell me to jump, I say how high.
They tell me to sign a letter, I sign the letter.
Yeah, like I'd like THAT leading me.
DeleteIowa is Iowa. BURP.
McCain sounds like he is suffering from dementia and should retire.
DeleteStill John.
If I'm under Lt Col. Joni Ernst's command and she undermines the Commander-In-Chief 's orders, whose orders do I follow? Will I be considered a traitor if I follow Lt. Col. Ernst's orders?
ReplyDeleteGood question.
DeleteOkay ready 47 Senators? 1, 2. 3eeeee
ReplyDeleteAPRIL FOOLS!
"I don't think we are undermining the president," Ernst said during a conference call with reporters. "This was a letter addressed to Iranian officials to just basically state that whatever agreements are reached between the Iranian government and the president is not something that is likely to be followed in the future, by a future Congress or a future president."
ReplyDeleteSo, to be clear, she's not trying to undermine the president but just reminding Iran and other countries that any deal he makes won't last as long as a bucket of warm spit in the desert. Glad she was able to clear that up.

As Sarah Palin would put it, no harm no foul.
The "harm" done is that the US has been embarrassed once again by members of the GOP in the front of the world; the potential "harm" is that the negotiations with Iran could fail. Great harm has been done by Grassley and every other traitorous and seditious senator who signed that heinous letter. To think that they're trying to chortle and joke their way out of it is disgusting. Do Republicans never pause to think about the consequences of their actions? These are sensitive negotiations that have been going on for YEARS. They involve the major countries of the world trying to come together to keep the peace in the Middle East. Of course, peace is not something that the GOP cares much about either. I am beyond furious at the 21st century GOP.
DeleteBeaglemom
All this talk about Ernst being a traitor is above our pay grade. Let's wait to hear from Wasilla High School political scholar and advisor Bristol Palin-Kolvig-Levi-Barber-Paoletti-Junker-Meyer for her guidance and direction in this sensitive matter.
ReplyDeleteMy Mom said that Obama is the traitor because he is negotiating with those Ayerab terrorists and Uncle Bibi said they are bad.
DeleteLet's see if the political scholar figures out they are Persians.
You will have to wait a little while because she and Dakota and her bae are in Vegas again at the moment.
DeleteBristol sure works hard! so i am sure Mommy will have her ghostwriter come up with something.
She must mean this #bae LOL.

By the way how can she still be a Lt colonel in the national guard and a senator at the same time? Isn't that a conflict of interest?
Dan Sullivan is in the same boat. Let's hope they are not only court martialed, but also thrown the hell out of Congress.
ReplyDeleteWell Joni, that didn't take long, now did it. Can you be a senator if you are court mashalled?
ReplyDeleteSorry. I mean court martialed.
ReplyDeleteNeed coffee. Only after 6 am here in the EST.
Well, she surely showed her ignorance of the Constitution and of reality if she signed the letter. Just another typical GOP legislator.
ReplyDeleteBeaglemom
Anyone who gets an endorsement from Sarah Palin, is automatically deemed a nut case in my view.
ReplyDeleteSarah's endorsement is a solid clue, for sure.
DeleteSo Republicans aren't reckless dumbasses - in fact, they're not responsible for choosing to write that letter at all - they had to write that letter because they're all under the influence of a poisoned environment that drives them helplessly to believe that their contempt for Obama is more important than everything else. (And 'cause he's That One ;-)
ReplyDeleteI wonder who poisoned that environment so horribly? Maybe the press could look into that for us and - you know - start reporting it or something.
Does anybody know who starts Joni Ernst's court-martial for being a traitor against her Commander-In-Chief and her country?
ReplyDeleteWe need to write to them.
LETS GET THIS PROCESS GOING
Has Bristol proposed to Dakota yet? How does a white trash Wasilla hillbilly propose to her trial husband?
