Oprah dumps Oz.

Courtesy of Vox:

The Dr. Oz media empire just took a blow from the woman who helped make him famous: Oprah Winfrey. According to New York Daily News, "'The Daily Dose With Dr. Oz,' a 'radio minute' produced by Oprah's Harpo Productions, will end May 29."

Even more interesting: Oz's spot, which aired on 150 stations, may be replaced with "A Better Life With Dr. Sanjay Gupta" — the CNN chief medical correspondent.

While there has been no explanation for the switch, the news comes just over a week after Oz faced heavy criticism for featuring questionable science on The Dr. Oz Show. The public scorn has caused some to question whether Oz — who was a medical expert on Oprah's show starting in 2004 — is now tarnishing Oprah's legacy.

In particular, a group of doctors and professors from across the country signed a letter addressed to Columbia's dean of medicine — where Oz has a faculty position — calling the medical school's affiliation with the TV star "unacceptable."

Oh well he's done now. Once Oprah throws you to the curb, your ass is over.

You know personally I am going to give a great deal of the credit to John Oliver.

Because without his incredibly insightful reports about Dr. Oz I am not sure that Oprah would have felt enough pressure to essentially admit that she is a quack magnet. (Yes I'm looking at you Dr. Phil.)

Gupta is not much better than Oz. He was all over the place, opposed to health care reform a couple of years ago. I have doubts about any physician who can diagnose about an individual on television. These guys are quacks.

    1. Yep. They have the med school credentials and all, but they are quick to espouse unproven quick fixes for the sake of publicity. Gupta did almost a 360 on marijuana as its legalization expanded state to state.

I might get slammed for this but I never got the fascination with Oprah. Yes, she overcame a lot and worked hard to get to where she is but many of us have. With that success, I saw a woman who frequently talked over her guests and made everything about "her."

Dr. Oz and Dr. Phil are two prime examples that she's not always right.

You are right on about Oprah, the only thing bigger than Oprah's butt is her ego. I don't need some narcissistic, egotistical, self-centered person giving me advice about anything, thank you very much.

I've heard her talk about the ' good white people' she's hired over the years. I really believe she's a closet racist. I've never understood the adulation she attracts. I just don't get it.

Not to pile on, I'm neutral on Oprah, but she cracks me up giving marriage advice and "living your best life". Hey, lady, that Steadman dude laying next to you? He's about as good as you're gonna get, why so scared of marriage? I know your best friend and jogging partner, Gayle King, got burned by divorce, but what makes you the expert at marriage?

I'd say Dr. Phil is the worse of the two, due to his sheer hypocrisy. His first wife has a lot to say about him. Also, he isn't a medical doctor. He holds a doctorate in psychology, but I still believe calling himself "Dr. Phil" on his show is misleading.

To be fair, anyone holding a doctorate can use the salutation "Dr." For example, a friend of mine has a doctorate in electrical engineering and is referred to as "Dr." But I agree with you on Phil's pop psychology idiocy: He's a an easy-answer quack in it for the money and nothing else (a perfect fit for Oprah's money-making machine.).

    2. Anonymous9:24 AM

But is your friend perhaps a teacher? I see this commonly in academics. I understand that a doctorate does mean you can technically use the "Dr" in your name, but with Phil I think its misleading. He is NOT a medical doctor or psychiatrist.

    3. If you have a PhD or an EdD you are still entitled to the title of Dr.

If Dr. Phil has a legitimate PhD in Psychology, he is entitled to be Dr. Phil.

Finally, someone who thinks the same thing about Dr. Phil as I do. I've tried to point that out to others but their comeback has always to connect him with Oprah, whom they see as doing no wrong.

One of the few times I watched a Dr. Phil episode, my tv set barely survived. He stood there, hovering over a petite seated woman who was in tears, and told her repeatedly that she taught her husband to abuse her!!! I was myself in an emotionally and verbally abusive marriage at the time and lemme tellya, my husband came fully trained. He just pretended to be Mr. Wonderful before the wedding. Dr. Phil has been on my excrement list ever since. As has Oprah for letting him get away with it.

If I wrote a book about abusive people there would be chapters teaching people about the dangers of teaching abusive people to stop their verbal, mental abuse and how they escalate to physical abuse and predictably launch smear campaigns that their targets are "crazy" liars.

That said it is up to each of us to let people know what we will and will not tolerate. Many people will respect limits we set and cease unacceptable behaviors. We only have control in our words and deeds and no control how another responds , twists, or reacts.

Abusive people blame their victims. Previous pretense of wonderful person helps to induce self doubt we deserved the abuse and outsiders pile on unaware of Jekyll Hyde.

I stayed far too long in an abusive marriage wrongly believing I must not be teaching this "right" as if the abuser would respond. They do: escalating to control, abuse, manipulative lies, threats of physical harm to physical violence while dismantling your support systems.

I watched a "Dr. Phil" episode in which he let an abusive husband harangue and verbally shred the terrified wife whom Dr. Phil was supposedly helping. Phil claimed the man was so dangerous that right after the show, they flew the woman to an undisclosed safe house in a state even he didn't know. And yet he gave this man a platform to yell at the woman about how worthless she was, how no one else would ever love her, how she didn't deserve him, etc. I almost vomited. He was so clearly condoning and even facilitating this woman's abuse because it made for more sensational TV.

Also, his coverage of the Steubenville rape case was unconscionable.

    That's good!
I was taking a baby aspirin once I turned 50 as recommended by Dr Oz. My cardiologist (who I saw for an SVT ablation, otherwise healthy) said it won't help but won't hurt either. He went to school with Oz and was actually pretty pissed at him for his selling products in the guise of medicine....ultimate sell out to pharmaceutical complex as he put it.

Dr. Oz wasn't the only doctor that recommended taking an aspirin a day for your heart health.

My own doctor recommended the same to me! And, I am still following those instructions.

My family has heart disease - I'm the oldest of three - and am the only one of us that has not had heart trouble - no stints - heart attacks, etc. And, I'm in my 70's!!!

    2. Daily low-dose aspirin is more likely than not to be helpful. Borne out not just by anecdotal experience but by research. So take one every day. What have you got to lose?

I loved the Oprah show in the late 80's early 90's. I think she did a lot of good. I quit watching her show when she started having celebrities on - I just don't care about them. I still get O magazine and enjoy it. I always feel empowered after reading the articles. I've never watched Dr Oz and think Dr Phil is a horses ass. JMO

  9. If Oprah is now running ads for Monsanto in her magazine, Dr Oz would be particularly unwelcome, as he is criticizing glyphosate as one of our biggest problems. The doctors lined up to refute him are Monsanto-picked yes men.

Oz is a snake oil salesman. His opposition to Monsanto is besides the point as is whatever connections (or lack of connections) the other doctors have.

At this point Oz is no better than Mercola.

That should be "Dr." Phil. He "retired" his license in Texas to avoid sanctions. He reminds me of Bill O'Reilly, arrogant and condescending with a huge god complex.

Dr. Oz is NOT a quack. You may not like him or his program, but to label him a quack is simplistic and erroneous. Check out the following article in the New York Times as counter balance: http://www.nytimes.com/2015/04/26/opinion/sunday/dr-oz-is-no-wizard-but-no-quack-either.html?_r=0

Real quackery is far more insidious and has not been in the news for far too long. Real quackery bilks desperate cancer patients into traveling to cancer clinics in Mexico only to have their veins filled with toxic substances and have their wallets drained of all wealth.

    1. If you refer to untested and unproven dietary pills or supplements as a "miracle" and then benefit in some way from their increased sales, then yes you are a quack.

Also a snake oil salesmen, a charlatan, and two bit grifter.

Gryphen, your vitriole for Dr. Oz puzzles me. He always has some kind of disclaimer statement. In addition, I believe that no one has died or been harmed by his suggestions.

I believe he can be wrong without being vilified. There is such a huge difference between You-Know-Who (a true grifter--Palin) and a cardiologist who really has helped millions think about health, think about caring how they live their lives, holistically as well as utilizing the best of Western medicine.

I liken this pitchfork and torch waving to the kind of attack that Dr. Weil received in the 1980's. I was a frequent traveler to "Quack Conventions," trying to help debunk the worst of the worst with a Quackbusting organization. But, when I met Dr. Weil, I knew that some of what he was discovering really was and is efficacious.

Please expose the true grifters, such as the sociopath, Palin, but don't lump Dr. Oz in with her disgusting group.

I agree with you 100 percent, Gryphen. Grifting off of desperate obese people with fake charts and pills, while getting a cut of the profits isn't part of the "First do no harm" oath all Doctors take. Same with "Dr"Phil, his sons have a show called "The doctors" who push an app, you discuss your symptoms, show him your boo boo, and he phones in your prescription, for the cost of the app AND a bill that isn't covered by insurance. Now hold your iphone over your heart, this might feel a bit cold but I'm listening with a stethoscope from my end.

I don't care what credentials they have, that's not medicine. While you're there, his wife has a makeup and perfume business, also too!!!!! Pffffft

From what I've heard Dr Phil didn't retire his license, he lost his license. He had two sexual harassment suites filed against him.I have friends in the Mental Health field and they are appalled by him. Dr Phil tells you what you're thinking and then "fixes" you in 15 minutes . You would have to be pretty dumb not to see thru this Charlatan.

  13. But has she apologized yet?

I want her to say she's sorry for foisting Oz on us and supporting this quack for so long. I want her to publicly admit he is doing more harm than good and that she no longer supports him in any way. I want her to say it.

  14. I don't think I've ever seen more five minutes of any six shows this guy's done. Something about his look just disagreed with my instinct.

As I feel about Judith Scheindlin and other TV 'judges,' so do I feel about "doctors" who sign on for strip (M-F) TV series, especially daytime: they're no longer being paid to be doctors but entertainers. Their income now is not based on their competence at law or medicine, but on keeping a satisfactory number of television viewers from picking up the remote to see what else is on.

Tell you what! Dr. Phil should have been the one to go - the guy is a farce.

Cannot believe the take down of Dr. Oz - reminds me of Bill Cosby's situation. You cross someone and certain people in the national spotlight can bring you down faster than your head can swim.

The Dr. Oz show was very easy to watch and he was always kind and had an easy manner. I personally enjoyed him and wish him well. He provided good advice to many!

You're not doing Oz any favors by comparing him with Bill Cosby.

The thing I detest about Oprah is that she's so quick to have advisors on her show telling everyone else how to live their lives. Well, ok, but Oprah has issues that she doesn't deal with obviously. She's had a weight problem forever - yeah she hires live-in trainers, cooks, dietitians, etc. but it's apparent she doesn't take the advise. The only advise from Oprah I would listen to would perhaps be business related, because let's face it, she's made herself into a billionaire - she just can't make herself healthy.

Good for O, she made millions on her own with no help, had a hit show, a magazine, bought huge houses and loves her animals. She found Dr Phil when the beef industry sued her and I don't know where she found OZ. I give her a lot of credit, but don't foist these entertainers off as doctors and produce their shows.
