"Death Panels" are back! Cue the Sarah Palin outrage machine!

I know a lot of you were worried I did not see this yesterday, but I did.
Courtesy of HuffPo:

Physicians would be paid to discuss end-of-life options with Medicare patients who want their wishes spelled out in advance under a regulation proposed by the federal government Wednesday.

Medical societies and seniors' groups like the AARP have long supported so-called advance care planning as a way for patients to consider whether they want intensive medical care in the event of a life-threatening illness near the close of their lives, and to make their preferences known to their loved ones in writing. But Medicare has never had a mechanism with which to pay doctors for this counseling, except during a physical exam when beneficiaries first enroll in the program.

“Today’s proposal supports individuals and families who wish to have the opportunity to discuss advance care planning with their physician and care team, as part of coordinated, patient- and family-centered care," Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Chief Medical Officer Patrick Conway said in a statement. "CMS looks forward to gathering public input on this proposal.”

The article goes on to point out that an earlier version of this option was derailed due to Sarah Palin's  histrionics over the so-called "death panels" which earned her Politifact's "Lie of the Year" back in 2009.

You may remember that back then Palin's ghostwriter wrote this on her Facebook page:

"The America I know and love is not one in which my parents or my baby with Down Syndrome will have to stand in front of Obama’s 'death panel' so his bureaucrats can decide, based on a subjective judgment of their 'level of productivity in society,' whether they are worthy of health care. Such a system is downright evil."

Which is so stupid that you actually risk losing brain cells by reading it.

Well fortunately today cooler, less ignorant, heads are prevailing and this end-of-life option is being reintroduced.

Which I think we all realize means at some point Palin will fire up her ghostwriter and post yet another brain cell murdering diatribe on her only remaining media outlet, Facebook.

I am sure reporters and pundits have their itchy fingers hovering over their keyboards in anticipation.

If I were Sarah Palin I'd have great fear of being admitted or entering a hospital anywhere in this country due to a sudden illness or accident!

I'm sure there are a number of folks out there that would love to slip her the needle and put her night night!

And, as to bringing up 'crosshairs' again - hope she travels with good security. She, in all likelihood will be in them as was Gabby!

I so hope Sarah Palin experiences one very painful death! She deserves nothing better due to the hate, racism and evilness she's demonstrated these past years!

My step-mother, whom I love deeply, has cancer; and I just found out two hours ago she now has hospice care and won't last, probably the month. Sarah fucking asswipe can kiss my smelly white ass. My dad, (who I love more than anything in this fucked up world) is having to deal with his wife dying. The doctor said he could not, under the law. A couple of days later right after the doctor left, Bill went asleep, peacefully, and never woke up..Kathy thinks the doctor DID help him. There was no possibility of living a normal life. Kathy was devastated, but relieved that his suffering was over.

I understand about your stepmom. My mom has also been put in hospice care. It's so hard when we see people who have lived large in our lives become so helpless and dependent. especially when we've leaned on them in our lives. To have the best possible care, kindness and tenderness for our loved ones in their final days is critical. Making the utmost effort to respect the dying person's dignity and personal hygiene, comfort and privacy is the focus.

I'm so sorry for your inevitable loss. I'm so sorry that your dad will lose his life partner. Blessing to you all.

Sarah is truly an evil creature. I echo your sentiments.

About friggin' time: my mother was 91 with pneumonia, dying before my eyes in hospital and the doctors gave her a feeding tube and wanted to do another major hiatus henria operation asap. She couldn't really understand any of it. The stay in the hospital for 8 days cost $80,000. (She had good insurance, thank gawd.)

IMO, this is farming old people for money and a disgrace. She had told my sister two weeks before she was perfectly ready to die.

There was no counseling until the last day when she was so infectious, we could not touch her. The social worker told us that to keep a body going at that stage is not only counterproductive but painful. It is going against nature. We brought her home and she died peacefully -- off any machines -- two days later.

Even though she was in a coma, she called out in the middle of her last night, shouting over and over: "Be thankful! Be thankful! Be thankful."

Well, I'll be thankful for these proposed and long-time-coming counseling sessions for other people so they don't have to go through what my mother had to endure.

A doctor can finally help families and individuals balance treatments and quality of life. If mom has dementia which will lead to death, why put her through hip replacement or other major procedures that can only lead to her spending her final days being bedridden.

Most doctors, knowing the consequences and outcomes, would refuse the interventions that many people have near the end of life. They choose peaceful days with their families over more treatments which have little real life extending value.

And other Drs push for treatment that will do no good except cause harm.
My Dad is 93, and while he is living in his own apartment had an oncologist try and convince him to spend $115,000 for some whacko experimental cancer treatment ( Not approved so not covered by medicare). Thank goodness my Dad's internist, while not going against any care in itself, discussed with my Dad the side effects and how it may affect his quality of life, be detrimental to his other ongoing health issues and supported my Dad's right to concentrate on doing what he wants instead of being sick from some treatment that has very little chance of any short term ( like my Dad says, his whole life is now short term) gain and most likely not add to any longevity of his lifespan anyway..
My Dad decided on "no treatment". has all his paperwork in order, power of atty to my atty sister, who will honor his wishes on any treatments when he is no longer able to. He also met with all of his children, had a very frank conversation about "when his time comes". Thankfully, in our family we all agree that we will honor my Dad's choices.

    Good to know:

GOP candidates must turn in financial disclosure on time to get into first debate

The large field of Republican presidential hopefuls jockeying to make the cut for the first 2016 debate will have to file a public disclosure of their personal finances on time to participate.

...Under a 1978 federal ethics law, all presidential candidates have to file details about their financial interests with the FEC within 30 days of declaring. The agency allows two 45-day extensions.

But requests for extensions will not be considered sufficient to participate in the debate, according to a person familiar with the details of the FEC paperwork required under the criteria, who requested anonymity to describe the process.

"They must fill out the form, putting the dollars and cents on the table, before they step on the debate stage," the person said.

Since Bristol wants people in need to burn welfare checks, she claims to be pro-life because she puts fetus cells above all else and she lectured and preaches for others to be abstinent when she couldn't do it... someone must have told her by now how much it costs to have any medical attention and births are not inexpensive.

Her solution is to offer no solutions and just preach to end something good that is working.

Bristol needs to be more transparent and open about herself and where and how she can advise and inform people about these matters.

It is more than suspicion now that she is a fraud. She now claims to be 'working' again but most know she never actually worked at the dermatology office.

She really needs to have more sunshine on all her activities that have the slightest indication of fraud.

This article is mostly about "end of life counseling" Not death panels. That is, doctors discussing with patients on how much the doctor should do that would prolong the dying process. Do they want to be resuscitated if their heart stops beating. Dr. Gelson who sometimes comments here has a practice that mostly serves the elderly. A few weeks ago he mentioned having 3 patients die in the last week. He would could explain better the reason for end of life counseling.

Death Panels that Sarah mentions were boards staffed by political appointees who would decide what procedures would not be provided to persons reaching some age. For example, would an 80 year old get a hip replacement that results in the patient being incapacitated for at least 3 months. Recovery takes much longer for the elderly. Boards like this exist also with private insurers. Such boards should be staffed by elderly retired experienced doctors who know what outcomes are likely.

This is one of those topics that most folks do not like to discuss. But !!!! It is important. And ALL of us should have an Idea what you would like to happen if you have that luxury to decide. Many don't. Who receives care and who does not varies for many reasons. I believe that true non profit health facilities do not discriminate. I believe that all usa citizens should have the same medical card that covers EVERYTHING. And it is built into our taxation system. additionally. IF WE wanted to control cost. All usa citizens would have genetic testing and we would solve many disease with cures. Cost of care would drop. peace .....talk about your wishes while you can to someone.

We're all mortal, and as mortals, it's our right to have our wishes met. We did ours the day my father was diagnosed with Stage four cancer. Yes, it adds cost to healthcare, but it saves time and money to keep a body alive just because we can. There's quality of life and dignity issues, it's a private matter just as any matter between doctor/patient.

Where ARE the folks who ran to Terri Schiavo's bed and stuck their noses in her family's tragedy? Bobbi Christina Brown, Whitney Houston's daughter, is in a hospice center on life support.... yet no one's beating a path to her door. Gee, what's the difference?????

    Sarah Palin go to HELL!!

I know from personal experience how hard it is to make that final decision. My mother had told me she didn’t want to end her life as a vegetable on life support, however hospitals have to follow laws.
Luckily she had a very specific medical power of attorney drawn up because at the end everything went very rapidly, there was no time to ask what her requests were. When the hospital called and said we think you should “pull the plug because she is going to have a heart attack that will kill her that will be a very violent end”, I knew the less painful way to go was to stop the ventilator.

So Sarah Palin GO TO HELL!!! You ignorant bitch, that has derailed common sense in this nation for SIX years. Go worry about who the father of your next grandchild is and leave the discussions to the grown-ups.
