Supporters of Bernie Sanders are securing permits to hold protest rallies outside the Democratic National Convention. Oh goody.

Courtesy of TPM:

Supporters of Sen. Bernie Sanders' (I-VT) presidential campaign have secured permits to hold rallies near the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia in July, the Wall Street Journal reported Friday.

The Sanders backers, who are not officially associated with the campaign, got a four-day permit for rallies at FDR Park, which is located next to the convention venue, the Wells Fargo Center. The city anticipates 30,000 people will attend the gathering, and the organizers told the Wall Street Journal that they're hoping for more.

Backers of Sanders have also obtained permits for three separate rallies at Thomas Paine Plaza, which is located farther from the Wells Fargo Center, according to the Wall Street Journal.

This going to be a shit storm.

I wonder how many of Sander's supporters will end the night sitting in a jail cell after the riot that is almost certainly going to take place when Sanders loses the nomination?

Some of them already went all torch and pitchforky over a Facebook post by Robert Reich suggesting that if Sanders loses that they should all work hard to elect Hillary Clinton.

Eugene Robinson of the Washington Post expresses this very real concern:

Bernie Sanders is playing a dangerous game. If he and his campaign continue their scorched-earth attacks against the Democratic Party, they will succeed in only one thing: electing Donald Trump as president.

Lindsey Graham of all people recognizes that he has seen all of this before.
And so has Ron Paul:

Former Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) said he feels a “kinship” with Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders, noting that the two occasionally agree on some policies and oppose favors to the corporate world.

The "Paulites" as they are often called were actually successful in taking over the Alaska Republican party for a brief time, before the GOP establishment wrested it out of their control and sent them packing.

I wonder if that is the future for the "Bernie Sanders' movement?" Or if after going on a rampage in Philadelphia, and becoming completely frustrated with the real sausage making of politics,  they will simply disappear back into the ether?

I can tell you what they are not likely to do at this point, and that is to vote for Hillary Clinton.

And no that does NOT mean that Hillary should choose Bernie Sanders as her running mate. In fact I am absolutely certain that she will lose more votes if she does.

Groan. There are no words. The Dems have already made it clear that they plan on involving Bernie in the platform, but nothing will satisfy him. I never thought I'd come to disrespect this man, but I have.

According to Harry Reid when Sanders returns to the Senate he'll have more clout due to his performance in the primaries.

“He’s coming back to the Senate. I think that he has the ability to be a tremendously more powerful senator in our caucus than he was,” he said in an interview that aired Saturday. “He was no patsy to begin with. But he can be something much more than what he was.”

Reid, a senator from Nevada, said Sanders has been an important part of his caucus and helped him with the Affordable Care Act. He also said he appreciates the direction in which the Vermont senator has pushed the Democratic Party."

The noisy Bernie supporters that plan to show up in Philadelphia are not the majority of Bernie supporters. I have many friends who would like to vote for Bernie but they will all vote for Hillary against Trump. Even my normally republican friends are all appalled at the idea of having Trump as the gop nominee.

Looking at that picture just makes me think we never should have lowered the voting age to 18. Rather than lower the voting age we should have raised the age to join the military. Heck, we are even now seeing the age when they can by cigarettes go up to 21, as it is for buying alcohol. If the brain isn't developed enough to make smart decisions re smoking and drinking until 21, why does anyone believe the brain is ready to make smart decisions re our political leaders at that early age? I sure don't!

I don't agree that we should raise the voting age, but 12:18 is the one who needs to get up to date on science. Current research shows the brain -- critical decisionmaking ability in particular -- isn't fully developed until the 20s. Research and learn.

If it's any consolation, FDR Park is across Broad Street from the Wells Fargo Center, and Broad Street lives up to its name at that point- 6-8 lanes across with a grassy median strip. So the protesters won't be right on top of the delegates. I know, small comfort, but it's all I got.

      Uh, yes they do.

Nevada caucus has 3 tiers, the winner of the third tier wins the state. Hillary one the first but Bernie won the second. Then they changed the rules and to say the first tier wins and discard the 2nd tier results. A vote was demanded on the rule change. It was blocked and a voice vote was held which Sanders won but was called for Clinton. They held the vote at 9:30 when it was scheduled for 10am so not all of the delegates were there, significantly not all of the Sanders delegates.

The entire thing stunk and it was orchestrated by Debbie Wasserman Schultz.

You want to blame anyone, blame her. She is the one that has been stoking all of the Bernie hate.

Although Bernie Sanders has scored a series of victories in recent primaries to slow down Hillary Clinton's likely presidential nomination, the vast majority of Democrats (70%) do not think the continuing campaign for the Democratic nomination is hurting the party. Sanders and Clinton supporters share this sentiment, and Democrats' views are unchanged from last month (71%).

Trump's image among Republicans, however, is still significantly more negative than that of the last three Republican nominees at about this point in their presidential campaigns. Mitt Romney, John McCain and George W. Bush had coalesced their party's support into a more universally positive image by May or early June of 2012, 2008 and 2000, respectively, with favorable ratings in the 80% range and low unfavorable ratings.

I am not worried. The Sanders crew is not a bunch of never-voted-before Democrats. They are not. They are people who are independent or unaffiliated who think this is some 70's anti-war protest movement or something.
And no one who supports Sanders would ever vote for Trump. My gosh. I remember 8 years ago when I was all in for Hillary and was not sure I would vote for anyone else. I did-and I cried election night when Obama won and I saw the ecstasy on the faces of those voters in Chicago.
Think of this. Trump is now running against no one in the GOP. Hillary has her hands fun with Sanders. She STILL has 3 million MORE total votes than Trump, while Bernie himself has equalled Trump's 10 million. So who is more enthused? Seems to me Democrats like what Obama has done, and they like Hillary. We do NOT like anything about Donald Trump. And Bernie's supporters will either come along or they will stay home and pout. We'll see what Sanders is really made of after he loses the nomination soon.

...and we all know now how THAT turned out. It pays to pay attention to history. One could extrapolate and say that Nader's campaign helped set the wheels in motion for the Twin Towers attacks, Desert Storm, the never ending Gulf War, Palin's rabid VP nomination and ultimately for a Trump nomination. ...all of which is a rabbit hole none of us want to go down again.

Democratic voters seem at ease with Sanders’ course. A recent CBS/NY Times poll showed that by 59-34% Democratic voters say that the “long race for the nomination” will help the Democrats in November rather than hurt it. (And the number is a sharp contrast with 2008, when by a virtual reverse margin (38-54%) Democrats thought the long race hurt the party in November.) By 50 to 48, Democrats describe the party as united rather than divided, again a stark contrast with 2008 when by 56 to 42% Democrats thought the party divided. By 83-14%, Democratic voters already say they’ll support Clinton if she becomes the nominee. The hand wringing about Sanders dividing the party seems overwrought at best.

    What Does Bernie Want?

The Democratic establishment and liberal commentariat lathered itself into a fine hysteria last week. What began as a Clinton surrogate meme -(Bernie has done his job, but now he’s hurting Clinton and should get out of the race) - became a maddened chorus. The predictably angry reaction of Sanders delegates —and truly deplorable behavior by some —to preemptory rulings by a pro-Clinton Nevada party chair was blown into a mythical scene of chair-throwing violence, based largely on a report by a biased reporter who wasn’t even there. The divisive DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz did her best to escalate rather than defuse the situation. Zealous Clinton advocates like Barney Frank and Paul Krugman slurred Sanders character because he wouldn’t drop out of the race. Pundits like Eugene Robinson (“behaving like a two year old”) and Jonathan Chait (“maddeningly narcissistic”) piled on. Sanders voters were scorned as befuddled innocents who can’t do addition, or, as Hillary Clinton earlier suggested, dupes that are being misled by Sanders misinformation. The New York Times and the Washington Post fanned the fames with alarmist headlines.

Slurs and insults are an odd way to build party unity. What is this fit of hysteria about? What has Sanders done to trigger this circular firing squad? What does Bernie want?

    What Bernie Wants

Sanders’ intentions are not a secret. He has stated them clearly from the beginning of his remarkable presidential run. He hopes to win the nomination. And he intends to build a “political revolution” to change the direction of the party and the country, to challenge the corrupted politics and rigged rules that work only for the few and not the vast majority.

As movement builder, he has every reason to stay in the race. He’s still drawing stunning crowds. He’s still energizing a new generation. He has a responsibility to take his message across the country, to educate and proselytize.

As a candidate, he stays in the race because voters keep him in.

@1:41 Well said. The Clinton wing of the party's reign is coming to an end. I think the level of anger they are displaying toward other Dems reveals that they sense they are losing control. But failed economic, social and global policies with an autocratic ruling class that only gives lip service to democracy is giving way to a grass roots movement that doesn't take money from corporations and banks. This is a breath of hope for the future. If the party can accommodate real democracy and change it can survive.

As for violence at the convention--Democrats who are repeating that mantra are fanning flames. The question this provokes is: Do they want violence so they can further repudiate Sanders and his voters?

Agent provocateurs dressed like hippies stirred up trouble at peace protests in Washington during the Nixon administration giving police "cause" to sweep an area and tear gas or arrest protesters.

There is not going to be a "shit storm" in Philly unless Democratic leaders play heavy and dirty as they did in Chicago in 1968--or recently in Nevada spreading untruths about Sanders' followers throwing chairs.

The Dem. leadership should awaken to the fact that in the internet age and with digital cameras it is much harder to maintain a spin. Nor can the MSM play their part in controlling the message the way they once did.

I doubt that protesters will get near the convention as there have been "protest zones" --pens or cages-- set up far from political conventions and candidates for many years now.

It's interesting that you say it's coming to an end on the eve of her overwhelming victory in the primary process.

Too bad they can't get closer to the venue. The protesters want to set up a gauntlet so they can scream obscenities at people as they enter and leave the convention.

@5;19 I wouldn't call her victory overwhelming as it was rather pre-ordained by the pledging of 500 + insider superdelegates before the voters had a choice. She has millions of Wall St. dollars and Washington insiders, corporations and so on behind her. Sanders has donations from individual's donations and no party machine. That his campaign has come so far is historic and reveals how fed up party rank and file are with the party and its current leadership.

What I mean by saying the Clinton wing of the party is over is this: because, mainly due to failed neoliberal economic policies and hawkish neoconservative policies adopted while pushing the party to the right since the 1980s, the "New" Democrats have been both instrumental and complicit in waging endless war(s), deregulation of banking, the largest transfer of wealth upward in history, the decimation of the US middle class, a collapse of the world economy, selling out labor and the working class in deals like NAFTA and the WTO.

If Hilary is elected she will have to work with the reality that the party's turn to the right is being repudiated by many others who have the will to enact economic policies that help the people not corporations and banks, and will also work to end senseless and counterproductive war and aggression that hawks like Hilary endorse.

If the party will not work with those millions of voters who want to remove the stranglehold big money and corporations have on this country, a third party will likely form.

In short, the day of the New Democrats calling the shots for the party is over. Hilary, and allied high ranking party officials, will have to compromise and also deal with an eventual makeover of congress as Dems (or others) are elected who are not as conservative as her wing of the party.

OT A word about Hilary's health care reform: her plan was to marry the leading insurance companies to the government. The insurance companies crafted it along with Hilary's advisers with no public input or hearings. It was an unmitigated public relations disaster and probably set health care reform back 20 years, IMO.

Sanders, Defiant on the Stump, Quietly Reassures Democrats on Unity

As tensions were escalating between Bernie Sanders and Democratic Party leaders over the chaos caused by his supporters at a Nevada convention, Dick Durbin got an unexpected call from the Vermont senator.

Durbin, the No. 2 Democrat in the Senate, came away from the conversation on Wednesday convinced that Sanders, who has all but lost the presidential nomination battle to Hillary Clinton, understands the need for party unity and will do his part to defeat presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump.

"We talked about the demonstrations and such," Durbin said Thursday in an interview. "I am convinced, as Bernie has said repeatedly, he is going to be on the team to defeat Donald Trump. I don't have any question in my mind."

Nancy Pelosi defends Bernie Sanders: He’s ‘a positive force in the Democratic Party’

“He has awakened in some people an interest in the political process that wasn’t there,” Pelosi said during a press briefing Friday. “He has encouraged young people to channel their interest in public service and community leadership into a political place, because this is where decisions are made that’ll affect their future and their lives.”

“And I think that’s positive,” Pelosi added.

Same thing as what Obama and Biden have said. To those of you screeching he should get out of the race and should be kicked out of the party: reflect on how you got to be 180 out of step with our top 3 party leaders.

This is a Democratic civil war: The Hillary/Bernie rift cuts to the essence of the party’s soul

Are the Democrats a modern corporate party, or one for the people? The "limousine liberal" debate still matters

  30. If Hillary is so weak as a candidate that having an opponent until June (And might I remind you she stayed in the primary against Obama until June) is going to shoot her down in flames, perhaps she isn't the best candidate for this particular race, or maybe those that support Hillary should calm the fuck down?

She's not weak. But why give ammunition to republicans?

    2. If she's not weak, why all the handwringing and hysteria? Just let the voting take it's course.

You Clinton supporters are a trip -- hypocritical at best. Sanders does not have to stop what he is doing to LET Clinton win. If she has the nomination in the bag, then LET her earn it the same way she made President Obama earn it in 2008.

Your continuous attempts to disenfranchise Sanders supporters has proven, yet again, that Clinton has fumbled and crumbled -- even though she's winning, she's still losing. She's the personification of what Gryphen alludes to all the time -- how Democrats are skilled at snatching defeat out of the jaws of victory.

Clinton v Sanders all the way!!!

    O/T:
You know, they mocked President Obama's important work as a community organizer and said he got nothing done. But yet, he energized "the base" and brought many new people into the election cycle...just like Bernie.

They argued that President Obama didn't serve enough time in government to know how it works -- yet the argument is that Bernie has been in government for 30+ years and "did nothing" -- totally overlooking the fact that he got elected three times.

Just because his name isn't featured on a bill doesn't mean he did not advocate and represent his constituents. How many times does your boss put your name on significant achievements made by the company? Probably none. So why does he have to have his name on everything in order for his service to our country to count or matter?

    Just sayin' . . .

This is what happens when you give every kid a medal in every competition, no matter if they were first or last. This is the first election that most of these young people have ever been involved in, and they can't believe that they aren't winning! These are the sorest losers that I have ever seen........even worse probably than the Republicans in congress when they get a Democratic president. Those guys are vile, but at least they don't bully little old ladies, rush stages, make death threats, and riot in the streets. These Bernie supporters are so accustomed to being "winners" from toddlerhood on up, that they can't believe that their candidate is legitimately getting fewer votes. Instead, they claim that the state Dems are a bunch of oligarchs (mostly 60 to 70 year old retired schoolteachers from what I've seen and experienced) who've somehow "fixed" all of the caucuses and elections that Sanders has lost, with their evil oligarchy ways. We really need a national movement that teaches our children how to be "a gracious loser". My one big regret about Bernie losing is I'm going to miss out on the rioting in the streets that would apparently happen when his followers eventually figured out that he couldn't deliver on the free college, etc. Of course, he would blame everyone but himself on that one too, but maybe by that time their brains would have finally matured and they wouldn't be so easily manipulated by an angry 80 year old egomaniac.
