A fight broke out at the Alaska PrideFest event on Saturday involving anti-gay protesters brandishing a megaphone, police said.
The altercation began near the Delaney Park Strip in downtown Anchorage and involved PrideFest participants and protesters, police said. One of the protesters identified himself to an ADN photographer as David Grisham of Repent Amarillo, a Texas Christian and political organization.
Police estimated about 20 people were involved. They said officers intervened before anybody was hurt.
According to the article the incident only involved some pushing and shoving. (And undoubtedly some name calling). Afterwards the police stayed to keep the peace until the event was over.
I have to say that I am proud of our LGBT community for standing up for themselves, I only wish I could have been there to help.
I know that guy with the flaming red doo. He is friends with my daughter, and I met him during the Democratic caucus this year. (Yes, he was a Bernie supporter.) (Update: Okay that is apparently NOT the same guy I met during the Dem caucus, and my daughter does not know him. Seriously how many people in town have that hair color?)
By the way Southern Christians were part of the Summer of Hate back in 2009, when they were mobilized by Jerry Prevo and brought in from Wasilla to protest against a ballot measure to protect gays in the workplace here in Anchorage.
They won that time, but since then the laws and attitudes have changed and our LGBT community feels much safer.
Apparently that still does not mean that some asshole from Texas cannot fly up here in an attempt to spoil their day of celebration however.
Which is sad.
Terrorist from Texas travels to Alaska spouting religious crap. Where's a drone with a Hellfire missile when you need it?
ReplyDeleteJesus's hardass on the left reminds me of all too many Facebook postings on my newsfeed, urging more 'god' in society to fix things.
DeleteNo, there's plenty of god out there, the trouble comes when folks convince themselves "My God is the authentic one, and his isn't, so his life is a little more disposable."
If I was a part of the Gay/Lesbian movement, I would start making these assholes pay by hitting them in the wallet.
DeleteFind out any commercial affiliation and boycott.
Even if its not affiliated, put the onus on one commercial group to silence these asses. We don't have to be gay to support a boycott. It worked very well against Coke and in the 60s, when the migrant/vegetable/fruit workers went on strike and groceries brought in outside commodities. No one would buy.
"the trouble comes when folks convince themselves "My God is the authentic one"
Delete----------------------
Well said. I would take it a step further. I don't think these angry people believe that they are made in God's image.
They create a god in their own image, as small-minded, petty, bitter, and stupid as they themselves are. And then convince themselves and everyone else that that is the god who must be obeyed.
Durango Co Pride weekend has been awesome!
ReplyDeleteThe asshole was trying to defend himself in the comments section of the article, but most weren't buying it. He proclaims he was doing "outreach", well guess what buddy, no one asked for your outreach and no one wants to hear your proselytizing.
ReplyDeleteNot everyone is interested in being converted to your god.
DeleteWrong! Donald Trump just accepted Jesus Christ as his savior per Dobson, to ensure eternal wealth.
If he's a sample of Texans, let them secede.
ReplyDeleteOdd someone would travel from Texas to create a disruption. Maybe someone paid him. In any event kudos to all who were there to participate and support.
ReplyDeleteI have attended several Gay Pride events in San Fran and always had the most wonderful time. People go all out with their attire. One of the most unusual things I ever saw there was a gorgeous young man who was wearing nothing but a penis ring.
Sorry if I duplicated this = lost connection for a bit.
Pat Padrnos
Nothing but a penis ring? He sounds like a winner to me. Probably friends with the daughter too.
Delete10:24 AM Was that your Dad?
Delete10:24 Nice try, Monica

Not all Texans are assholes, but a surprising number of assholes are from Texas...
ReplyDelete@9:44
DeleteI've been called an asshole, moron and told to fuck off on this blog.
Proud Texan born and raised.
Voted every time for Annise Parker(Lesbian) as my Mayor.
Voted for and have shook hands with current Mayor Sylvester Turner. He's African American and is the shit!
So call me an asshole for telling the truth about Hillary and her email/server crimes...
@2:54.
Delete"So call me an asshole for telling the truth about Hillary and her email/server crimes..."
Okay, you're an asshole. There are NO crimes! YOU may believe the lies and the innuendoes and the misleading statements all you want. That's your right.
But until ANY person is charged, tried and convicted, they have performed NO CRIME! That is basic law in this country. Or didn't you ever learn about our rights under the Constitution?
In fact, allow me to ask you a simple question: Did you EVER read and understand the Constitution?
Your an asshole. Hopefully you live in texass since your so proud of it, and not in Alaska. You should not give an invitation like that to many Alaskans we will tell you what we think.
DeleteKinky Friedman, and I really love this guy, a great guy who sells products to support his Utopia animal charity btw. Well, Kinky has a song called Asshole from El Paso. Funny guy, a Texan, who knows how to make good fun of his fellow Texans.
ReplyDeleteSad that stories of religious hate and anti gay terrorists get just a few comments, but put a Palin story up and everyone has an opinion. This is what is wrong with our country, Folks! The Palins should not be a story of any kind. Fight for equality and shun Xian control.
ReplyDeleteWhere's your post about Hillary arming Saudi Arabia?
ReplyDeleteThis isn't a news site, so the blog owner isn't obliged to post articles about everything that anyone deems important, but perhaps you could post a detailed, thorough article on your own blog.
Delete@11:27 AM Where's your comment about Trump embarrassing himself in Scotland?
DeleteThe USA has armed Saudi Arabia for 60 yrs, they are our allies in the middle east.
Delete11:27 AM Did she start arming Saudia Arabia 60 years ago?
Delete@3:28
DeleteNo,of course not.
But for someone(Hillary) who champions "women's rights",the Clinton Foundation should not take one penny from Saudi Arabia,or any other country with serious human rights issues.
And I guess we'll see when the FBI investigation wraps up just how close the State Dept. and Clinton Foundation worked together...
#BerniesFault
ReplyDeleteOT, but screenshots of the Stool and Levi's text exchanges have been deleted from yesterday's post. Any idea why?
ReplyDeleteHonestly, they BOTH look ridiculous.
ReplyDeleteADN took the comments off. Many Alaskans were sticking up for the event!
ReplyDeleteI don't get it. Who cares whom you love? Or if your hair is red or blue? Or if you wear a penis ring? If you don't want to see it, don't watch. Bury your head in a book (and maybe learn something). MYOB as we kids said in the 50s. I don't see how Jane marrying Mary or Joe cohabiting with Frank harms my 45 year straight marriage in the least.
ReplyDeleteAmen to this!
DeleteWhen my state passed marriage equality laws several years ago there were lots of stories on the news about couples who had been together for years finally having the chance to get married. The love they clearly felt for each other brought tears to my eyes.
I just saw a post on Facebook last month that a friend from many years ago just married his partner. They'd been together for 21 years and the pictures show two people who have been devoted to each other through thick and thin.
We all should be so lucky to find love like that!
1:56, you are forgetting it is xtian fanatics who do this sort of thing. They are more than okay with the vicious crimes perpetrated in the bible and are willing to repeat them, too. What crimes? Surely you've read some of them posted here, but a brief list includes murder, genocide, infanticide matricide, patricide, rape, fratricide....
DeleteThere's a reason many of us here call the extreme right the American Christian Taliban.
So, when will you be coming out of the closet, G? Or did you already and I just missed that?
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately I am just a boring straight guy, so I am missing all of the great perks of being gay these days.
DeleteStill I do get to enjoy everything from the sidelines.
Being gay is no picnic and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemies. However, genetics can be a bitch, just like DS, Cerebral Palsy, and a host of other genetic diseases, some people are just born gay and they have to deal with hate and discrimination from the rest of society.
DeleteSomehow society seems to be kind to some born different but not to others, why?
Here's a somewhat different take on the event. http://www.alaskacommons.com/2016/06/25/thousands-celebrated-pride-in-anchorage-but-a-couple-protesters-showed-up-so/
ReplyDeleteI can't imagine how many gay pride events this guy passed on his journey from Texastan to Alaska? I think he's a latent homosexual and realizes the ratio of men to woman in Alaska, and if he can't get a man, a moose or two will do. He's on a mission from God to "outreach" and convert as many as possible to his awesome God.
ReplyDeleteHe is from Texas but living in Anchorage now. It's on his Facebook page. I hope he's really careful who he ticks off up here, I hear about shootings almost every week over disagreements. Seriously.
