Trump's Chief of Staff John Kelly said that the Civil War had good people on "both sides." Now why does that sound familiar?

Courtesy of the New York Post:

President Trump’s chief of staff John Kelly on Monday night praised Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee and said that “both sides” in the Civil War fought in good faith.

Kelly was speaking during an interview on Fox News when he made the comments, defending the historical significance of the Confederacy.

“Robert E. Lee was an honorable man. He was a man who gave up his country to fight for his state,” Kelly told the network about the Southern general in the bloody war between the North and the South.

The Civil War was fought after the South seceded from the Union mostly due to a disagreement over slavery.

“The lack of the ability to comprise led to the Civil War,” Kelly said.

I'm sorry, in the disagreement over whether or not it is right to own another human being, where is the compromise?

Black folks should only be slaves until age eighteen?

Or only every other black person should be owned by a white man?

This "good people on both sides" argument is of course the same one that Trump made after a white supremacist ran over protesters in Charlottesville, and several others were beaten and even shot at.

Apparently this is an official White House talking point when it comes to defending Confederate soldiers and their statues.

I had essentially given up on any idea that John Kelly had any integrity after he attacked and lied about Rep. Frederica Wilson, and this own proves that I was right to do so.

What type of compromise could there possibly have been? Yikes! You couldn't own slaves you could only lease them?

I have zero respect for Kelly! He gives a very bad name to other Generals! Getting involved w/Trump was his idiocy and he's ruined his reputation for the rest of his life throughout our country.

Kinda figured when Kelly was put on as Chief of staff he was on the Trump team. As well. Typical. No one in Washington has any integrity anymore. We were just hoping. And now with Trump, it's toilet drain the whole way. No going back.

Kelly made those stupid Civil War comments on the premier of Laura Ingraham's new show on Fox. The idiot Chief of Staff also stated that he would NEVER apologize to Rep. Wilson from Florida for his false statements about her. JERK. He must be a Trump wannabe.

"Lee entered West Point in the summer of 1825. At the time, the focus of the curriculum was engineering; the head of the Army Corps of Engineers supervised the school and the superintendent was an engineering officer. Cadets were not permitted leave until they had finished two years of study, and were rarely allowed off the Academy grounds. Lee graduated second in his class, behind only Charles Mason,[28] (who resigned from the Army a year after graduation). Lee did not incur any demerits during his four-year course of study, a distinction shared by five of his 45 classmates. In June 1829, Lee was commissioned a brevet second lieutenant in the Corps of Engineers.[29] After graduation"The 1850s were a difficult time for Lee, with his long absences from home, the increasing disability of his wife, troubles in taking over the management of a large slave plantation, and his often morbid concern with his personal failures.[53]

In 1852, Lee was appointed Superintendent of the Military Academy at West Point.[54] He was reluctant to enter what he called a "snake pit", but the War Department insisted and he obeyed. His wife occasionally came to visit. During his three years at West Point, Brevet Colonel Robert E. Lee improved the buildings and courses and spent much time with the cadets. Lee's oldest son, George Washington Custis Lee, attended West Point during his tenure. Custis Lee graduated in 1854, first in his class.[55]"

I'm going to get slammed for this. That's fine. Slam away.

I think Kelly is mirroring DJT so that he can stay in the position he's in. I think he's a Patriot and that he's doing his damndest to hold the fort while Mueller ties up the loose ends. And I think he will say anything to protect our democracy.

And from a military point of view of armed conflict, I can find no fault with his words. I can't relitigate history, but if y'all want to, be my guest. Personally, I doubt any of you know how you would have felt if you'd been alive then. It's easy to pick a side looking through the prism of hindsight.

DJT is a traitor and he is done. US Intelligence and Five Eyes have him dead to rights. ADX Florence is his future home.

But y'all bicker over the shit that doesn't matter in the long run and turn a blind eye to how Russia bought DJT, Facebook and Twitter to divide us. We are Americans.

was his comment that Lee left his country to fight for his state, or words to that effect an euphemism for traitor. Biggest mistake of the Civil War was that the southern leadership were not one and all hung for treason. That mistake,of mercy has left the festering pile of shit we live with today.

Enslavement today can happen in many ways and forms. The civil war history was written. We don't have to debate it. We don't have to agree. The Union vs Confederates. Slavery ended, everyone equal and vote. Turn the page.

You have to understand the South. One of my Husbands ancestors was named, States Rights Guest.

To this day they will claim it's a matter of states rights and slavery was not the issue. The South will never admit anything else. The civil war caused a great divide that still lingers.

@6:59 PM Apparently your grand parents never told you about what was happening in those days. Some of us have written proof and photos of lynchings, rapes, and assaults for merely laughing. Have you heard of the laughing barrels in the South? If a black man wanted to laugh while walking on the street, he was supposed to stick his head in a barrel. In the 1960s there were still 'whites only' signs posted at restaurants, bus terminals, and in neighborhoods. But you would not know about those racist rules.

7:44, guess slave trading and slavery occurring well beyond the apparent 'end' in the north never happened eh? The north never had slaves? The families in the north never had slaves? Lincoln's family never had slaves? And of course to you... the Civil War was only about slavery. Keep trying to rewrite history for your modern day politics and keep getting called out. Slavery is a bad mark on this country and every other civilization on earth. Every skin color that has ever existed has been subject to slavery.

Does slavery exist today in this country? Has anyone alive in this country ever been a slave? Are we not all protected by the same laws no matter what we look like?

Keep pushing the race divide! See how that works for the Democrats in the future. The world and workforce is moving on and accepting people of all cultures and colors, even though the Democratic Party desires to keep ownership of black persons. It is like it is all they have left.
