No tweets of SPA tonight.

I have been attempting to decide all day whether I can make my self sit through Sarah Palin's lying piece of propaganda tonight, and the answer is that I cannot.

In fact I can barely bring myself to believe that they have the temerity to even broadcast it after what happened in Arizona yesterday.

And even if I were physically able at this point to "play hurt" and take one for the team, I don't believe I even should.  Nor for that matter should anybody else.

The fact is that today Sarah Palin stopped being a joke.

Today she became something else entirely.

Though there may NEVER be a direct line drawn between the kind of hateful rhetoric that Palin spews on a daily basis and the actions of Jared Lee Loughner, the fact is that she is clearly complicit in the minds of millions of Americans.  And in my opinion she deserves nothing less.

She brought this hateful rhetoric to the national stage during  the 2008 campaign trail and has never looked back.

Sniper targets on maps, talk of revolution and taking our country back, "Don't retreat, instead reload," sexually charged attacks against her critics, the omnipresent use of violence on her reality show, with all of this Sarah Palin has created a brand that is all about punishment and destruction.

Today Arizonians are mourning the punishment and destruction doled out by a very disturbed young man.

Today a mother is mourning the loss of her precious child.

In my opinion it would be disrespectful of their pain to watch, and talk about, this transparent political advertisement from the woman who carelessly throws around the kind of rhetoric that might very well have inspired this young man to murder six people and wound twelve others.

Today we need to mourn, and tomorrow hopefully, we begin to heal.

If others feel capable of dealing with this vile woman today, then my hat is off to them.  But for me today is about holding those I love close, and sending my thoughts out to those whose loved ones were torn away from them in such a violent manner.

One last thought that I will share about Sarah Palin.

Somebody asked me today if I thought she was finally finished.

My response, yes she is finished. Take whatever cold comfort you can from that.

G, you have a tremendous way with words. Yes, she in no longer a joke. I've read thousands of pages of information about these shootings.

One person said that if a student had drawn crosshairs on pictures of students the student would be expelled. Sarah Palin should be held responsible for the hate than she spews.

She is a vicious, vile (non) human being.

My thoughts & prayers are with the victims & their families.

I hope you're right that she's finished as a national force. I want her to shut up and go live her life away from tv cameras. I want her daughters to go to school and maybe learn something about being decent, productive citizens.

I want people to stop flinging flaming mud on people and rejoicing when it sticks and burns people who never did them any harm.

Thank you Gryphen, that was very well said and I appreciate the thought and care that went into posting it.
You are right. It's no longer a joke, her actions and words have become deadly. Plenty of people laughed and joked about Hitler...until it was too late. When will people figure out this is exactly the same thing?
I hope like hell this is the end of her and her aspirations. Unfortunately, I doubt she has the personal introspection to EVER examine herself enough to feel responsible for anything.

I hope you are correct and she really is finished. Seems to me she is like a bad rash, hard to get rid of. I won't be satisfied until she loses EVERYTHING she gained through her hatred, and is left penniless. Maybe now the people who know all her secrets will finally be able to "tell all" and make money off her for a change. May she never have a decent night's sleep for the rest of her life, and I understand why Toad prefers the company of prostitutes. At least THEY are honest, in it for the money.

  9. Gryphen I don't understand how you can stomach to watch that show at anytime but I know you do it for your viewers. I just tell my viewers "screw you", catch it on some video that will be put out. I have never watched it and the only reason I know what happens is because you give us the low down. I appreciate someone taking one for the team but I am glad that you have chosen not to watch it tonight. As you said, no one should watch it and lets pray to God she is done! Many of us have been saying since she came on the scene that this was going to happen but the media and powers to be always swept it under the rug. I hope someone finally has the guts to do something about Sarah Palin and those like her. I hope the media will call a spade a spade and I hope her Karma has finally knocked on her door. I wish people from Alaska would have had the guts to say what they know before a little child and others got killed...just saying...

Whether one can draw a clear, direct line from Palin to the shooter, this tragedy clearly underlines the consequences of the "2nd amendment solution" advocated by Palin, Angle and other. Rep. Gifford, just doing her job of hearing her constituents' concerns, and the little girl put a face on the damage caused. No serious candidate is going to us gun-related imagery in a long time, I suspect.

On a tangent, does anyone know if @bristolpalin is BP's real twitter account? Someone w that twittername showed all the judgment we've come to expect of a Palin in a twitterfight with a MattKap20 today. The comment remained on his feed but may have been erased from hers.

I agree. I was always afraid that when SP's world finally blew apart, others would be caught in the toxic fallout. But I never thought that it would involve so many innocent people in such a horrible fashion.

I'm sadly not surprised that TLC is still airing her show tonight. In fact, they've been running the series all day. I've never watched one, just read the recaps. Guess they have too much cash invested and have to run the season out, but what a sign of respect for the victims (and awareness of the sad outcome of Sarah and her ilk's evil rhetoric) if they had taken the high road and canceled or postponed tonight's episodes. Thank you, Gryphen, for deciding not to tweet. I'm sure the Bots will be glued to their screens, praying for their poor, misunderstood Queen. Every future appearance that Palin makes anywhere, she should be confronted with pictures of the victims of yesterday's massacre. Palin should be forced to look into the smiling face of Christina Taylor Green at every book signing or every political rally she ever appears at, for the rest of her life.

I think that, given the bull's eye graphic that Palin used to target Giffords specifically, she IS directly culpable in the violent act that occurred yesterday. I heard the violent chants at a McCain/Palin rally here in Albuquerque, and neither McCain nor Palin said anything to distance themselves from them. That pall of violent words and imagery, from both Palin and her supporters has clung to her like stink on shit for the two years since the presidential campaign ended. Through it all, Palin has remained silent regarding the invocation of violence as a means to achieve political ends. It's too bad she just hadn't been SILENT.

Palin has recklessly inflamed the delusions and insane passions of the idiot base of the teabaggers. She speaks to their insanity, to their paranoia, and to their fears. And she does so with words like "set your sights on next season’s targets," "never retreat, instead RELOAD," and "'bullseye' icon used 2 target the 20 Obamacare-lovin' incumbent seats" all accompanied by a graphic using rifle scope cross hairs to indicate who the targets should be. And yesterday, one of those targets was shot in the head at point blank range.

She owns a part of what happened yesterday. She damn well better try and atone for it, though I'm not sure what she could do that would seem sincere at this point.

Palin, for once in your life, do something responsible and decent and apologize sincerely, then STFU forever!

  27. I think that the Lamestream Media should vow to ignore Palin and not report or repeat any of her vitriol again. She has been irrelevant since she resigned as governor of Alaska. She has manipulated the media to stay in the limelight and the media has printed and continued to give her a platform to spew her hatred. Now is the time to put Palin where she belongs: a mere asterisk in the history of Alaska. No one should be watching her wretched show tonight. She should be shunned as the hateful creature she is.

As much as we would all find satisfaction in it, Palin will never be held legally responsible for her part in this tragedy. There is no absolute, concrete proof that her years of inciting hate and encouraging violence triggered the attack. She will never be arrested and likely will never be found liable in civil court.

The best thing we can all do to find some peace is to force her into complete oblivion. She needs to be isolated and shunned, never to be interviewed or videotaped again. She needs to be completely and permanently removed from all media and all political influence.

We can start that process by refusing to watch the travesty that is her unreality show.

  37. Anonymous2:49 PM

Gryphen, it's funny you said this tonight, because last night and all during the day this was the general sentiment on my humble blog post and throughout the entire Facebook arena---
Sarah Palin has stopped being the brunt of everyone's jokes and revealed herself to be frightening.

Frightening because of her pig-headed ignorance, and her charisma over the weak-minded holy-rollers with a need for gun-action who are following her. It's suddenly turned macabre at a level only comparable to Charlie Manson and the Tate-LaBianca murders, for the sole reason to incite Helter Skelter and a racial war.

You don't have to be a member of the tea party, but if you're one of the poor crazies and psychotics out there, sitting at home, getting restless, angry, unemployed, wondering what the hell is happening... and you by chance stop by FOX News and see not just her, but Beck, for example, ranting and raving... something's bound to snap.

    And you get Tucson, AZ.

I think she is done, politically. She will try to weasel herself as an aide perhaps on her replacement, but if she wanted the world to stand up and see her, she got it. And it's not a pretty picture. In fact, it's quite ugly, and it's getting darker and more menacing by the moment.

I hope we all remember the other dead in this event. They haven't yet received their due respect because they were not children or publicly known.

I realize none of us are purposely forgetting them, but the news focus is on the Representative, the Judge, and the Child. They represent powerful categories or images of loss. However, others are dead and their families are grieving. Their lives mattered as well and remembrance.

Plus, what about those who were only wounded. We do not know yet how serious their physical injures are what lasting physical suffering they may endure, but their lives and those of their friends and families will forever be marked by this violence.

Whenever someone strikes out in violence, it is never just the primary victim that suffers, never just the family or friends - we are all victims of this hideous crime arising from an individual's disturbed mind and a political and popular culture that has come to be mired in disrespect, hate talk, and violent metaphors.

All I hope is that the other primary victims of this incident do not get lost or passed over because of the larger-than-life categories of politician, judge and child. All are tragic losses even though some seem more powerful images representative of great loss.

Sarah Palin and all those like her who carelessly or purposefully whip the fires of hate and intolerance are to blame. Those who use destructive metaphors to manipulate others are to blame.

May Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck and all the others fade into the darkness of these past few years, becoming shameful footnotes to our country's history.

    Palinspeak And Violence

    A reader writes:

I dislike Sarah Palin (almost) as much as you do, but her March Madness post chock full of violent metaphors was written not out of the blue but rather as a sarcastic response to press/blogospheric criticism that she had gone too far with her "crosshairs" and "don't retreat, reload" political rhetoric. It's not just a random post proving that she can't even talk about sports without discussing over-the-top violence. Rather, she purposefully, and sarcastically, filled the post with as much battle imagery as possible to show that the type of metaphors she had been using in her political rhetoric -- and that she was being criticized for in the press and in the blogosphere -- are in fact commonplace in sports lingo.

I agree with you that her rhetoric is dangerous and over-the-top, and perhaps even that one of the constants in her worldview is violence.

The main reason I think she is DONE is not that people won't connect the dots (they already are), but that she's been propelled all along by two things: hate mongering, and working her assets (ahem) to best advantage among the feeble-minded. The latter strategy has been in obvious peril for a while. (Hey Sarah haven't the bruises healed YET?) Now the former is not going to fly. Strip away the pretty face and the hate and what's left?

While politicians, both Republicans and Democrats, are offering their sentiments and thoughts about the Arizona shooting, Sarah is silent. Her only defense, through RAM, was that those were map marks, not cross hairs. Sarah called them targets and bulls' eyes. So much for the map marks and the lame excuse.

Sarah offered premature condolences to the Giffords family while Gabrielle is still alive and fighting for her life yesterday. Since then, Sarah hasn't said a thing." One of the constants in Sarah Palin's worldview is violence. You see it in her reality show where most wildlife is immediately identified as a threat to be guarded against or killed. You see it in her inflammatory language, and the ways in which she corrals supporters to sometimes shockingly violent threats. You see it even in completely innocuous Facebook postings on sports. Just check out this Palin stream-of-consciousness on, yes, March Madness:

To the teams that desire making it this far next year: Gear up! In the battle, set your sights on next season’s targets! From the shot across the bow – the first second’s tip-off – your leaders will be in the enemy’s crosshairs, so you must execute strong defensive tactics. You won’t win only playing defense, so get on offense!

The crossfire is intense, so penetrate through enemy territory by bombing through the press, and use your strong weapons – your Big Guns – to drive to the hole. Shoot with accuracy; aim high and remember it takes blood, sweat and tears to win. Focus on the goal and fight for it.

If the gate is closed, go over the fence. If the fence is too high, pole vault in. If that doesn’t work, parachute in. If the other side tries to push back, your attitude should be “go for it.” Get in their faces and argue with them. (Sound familiar?!) Every possession is a battle; you’ll only win the war if you’ve picked your battles wisely. No matter how tough it gets, never retreat, instead RELOAD!

The point here is not that there is any connection between this random post and political violence. The point is the worldview Palin holds. It is zero-sum. It expresses itself in clear and stark violent imagery. It is constantly about attack, conflict, combat, "enemy territory", "Big Guns", battle. This rhetorical background is so deeply part of the narrative we barely notice it any more. But it is not truly the language of politics; it's the language of war.

@2:47 - I share your desire for national healing but disagree about the legal foundations for a civil suit possibly filed by the families involved in this tragedy against Palin. Palin put a target on the back of a Congresswoman; there's national TV footage of this Congresswoman saying that Sarah Palin's rhetoric caused her distress. And so many people were shot in this assassination attempt: a judge, a pastor and a child died. I wish we could just "shun" her, never listen or speak of her again - act as if she doesn't exist. Unfortunately, we cannot bury our head in the sand with these divisive-hateful people.

We won't quit until she is 100% out of the public arena. No more books, no more speaking fee's, no more Faux commentary and no more public stages. Anywhere she appears there should be signs in protest until she vanishes from the public.

We will "shun" SPA & TLC tonight - but until she is publically destroyed... we continue.

Ha. Yes, "surveyors marks." The whole country is familiar with those! VOTERS REALLY NEED TO TAKE A STAND AND "SURVEY" GABRIELLE GIFFORDS' DISTRICT.

Uhm, look. If you're familiar with Rebecca Mansour, you know her to be a very minor figure -- a pinhead fangirl who is rarely worth talking about and certainly isn't contributing in any way to anyone's intelligent or moral discourse. But this response from her is daffy. Surveyor's marks. Okay, you must think I'm a fool. Like I said before, there is no bright and shining line between the above image and anyone getting shot, okay? The gunman didn't seem to have the 2010 midterms, or these..."surveyor's marks" in mind. Okay? We can say that. But did someone feel a twinge of moral responsibility just the same? YES, THEY EFFING DID. They pulled this image down off of the campaign website. YOU KNOW, DESPITE THE FACT THAT THESE ARE OBVIOUSLY JUST SURVEYOR' S MARKS.

You know, Rebecca, you should go with that instinct, next time. Just say, "We of course never intended for anyone to get shot and we're pretty sure that we didn't inspire this shooting. But we learned a lesson today about how the lines can blur. And we personally felt a shudder in our conscience when this happened. Despite the fact that we are not responsible, this event triggered a depth charge, somewhere near our guilt center. We're not bad people, we didn't do anything wrong, but we can still find ways to be better, and we will try to be better, so that next time this happens, there won't be an image we have to remove from our website -- LIKE THIS TIME, because a teeny sense of responsibility actually finally surfaced and cut through the overwhelming pride we possess that typically compels us to never ever admit we made any mistake ever and FORCED us to take it down. And yes, YOU KNOW US, our pride came back and won the day, making it possible for me to introduce most of America to the concept of 'surveyors marks' -- YOU KNOW, FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THEIR LIVES. Sarah Palin was inciting people since she was first introduced to the country where she was insinuating that Obama is a terrorist. She hasn't drop the dangerous rhetoric since, all for the sake of being "controversial" in order to keep herself popular in the media and whatever else may come of that. While she's not directly responsible, she certainly has the cold heart of a murderer.

What's the difference between demonizing and inciting hatred toward opponents while knowing what the potential consequences are and actually killing them yourself?

Heck, one can almost make the case that she did indeed directly encourage such killings, yet using coded language.

It's hard to say if Sarah is now toast, but she should be.

  76. Sarah Palin has a special responsibility and opportunity in the wake of the attempted assassination of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords. For it was Sarah Palin and Sarah Palin alone who earlier put the crosshairs of a gun on Rep. Giffords. And so far, Palin's response has been Facebook prayers for the victims and an official denial that her widely distributed map involved gun sights at all. This is obscene duplicity at best.

But only Sarah Palin put 20 Democratic members of Congress in her crosshairs, and only Sarah Palin bragged that 18 are now gone, leaving Rep. Giffords and Rep. Nick Rahall of West Virginia.

Someone has to say it. There has been an astonishing acceleration of violent right wing rhetoric. At the same time, the mainstream media has come to accept armed revolution (second amendment remedies) and violence as legitimate political discourse instead of calling it out as behavior that crosses a very dangerous line. In the past week alone, incendiary devices were received at the offices of the Democratic Secretary of Homeland Security and the Democratic Governor of Maryland.

Tell Sarah Palin: Threats of violence have no place in our democracy. End the use of shooting images in rightwing political rhetoric and stop validating political figures who use violent metaphors in their political calls to action.

    The petition reads:
"Threats of violence have no place in our democracy. Renounce the use of shooting images in political rhetoric immediately, and stop using your platform to promote and validate violent calls to action on the right."

Each time I see Piper Palin's face I will be reminded that Christina Green's parents will not be able to watch her grow up. It doesn't take a direct line to be drawn for Sarah's consequences to have a fall out on her children. I am sad for them but not like the deeper cut. It is a shame that Sarah's fall out would etch Piper into history in that way. People did try to warn Sarah that the results of her words and actions could be dire.

It'll be interesting to see what Fox does with her now. My guess: they'll keep her on the air and pass her a question or two about this tragedy, to which she'll provide a brief, prepared response, and then they'll attempt to blow it off and move on while suggesting that "the left" is just trying to score political points from this. You know, the same casual dismissal they use toward those "loons on the left" that actually think Trig is not actually Sarah's son... then they'll proceed with business as usual.

I am hesitant to say that Sarah is finished now. Reality is what we perceive. Fox and the like have an alternative universe designed to give those like Sarah a place to thrive. We'll see what happens. But reality has made a few large strides closer to her, that's for sure.

You cannot hold the best interests of people in your heart if you act and behave the way Sarah Palin does. Her words, actions and intent are full of thoughtless aggression and real hate. She doesn't speak of tempered discussion and coming together. A shallow opportunist and exploiter, she has risen to her "fame" thanks to a mega boost from McCain. If it hadn't been for the aberration of luck she'd still be mukluking through Alaska. We can't expect her to do the right thing because she has no moral conscience. Even in regards to this horrific attack, she is incapable of owning her wrong doing. This is a character flaw that is seriously dangerous in anyone who assumes the role of leader of any sort.

I read this in a comment section somewhere online and don't want to forget it: In response to those who say their rhetoric, their words didn't pull the trigger of the gun used to kill those in Arizona --- the Constitution is written words, the Bible is written words. Why are they important? Because words matter.

Palin et al use violent rhetoric because it gets them attention and money - but it also fosters an environment of hate where those less stable find it easier to justify and commit such horrific actions. Words matter.

I think what many of us are failing to think through is that Sarah Palin has been brought in front of the public by people, and corporations - not by her followers. I suppose someone could make the case that her self-promotional twitter activities might be sustained longterm through these supporters, but what would that add up to? What would she tweet about? Her poll numbers had already tanked before this terrible event.

What people are going to seek her out for comments or interviews, about anything frankly, after this? What would she say? Is she going to try and pretend that this didn't happen and attempt to change the subject and regurgitate GOP talking points? If not, what sort of sick strategy is she planning so as to avoid taking responsibility for the part her violent rhetoric has played here - and make no mistake, it has played a part, if only in contributing to this over-the-line tough talk that basically implies there are no limits to one's options for resistance against the supposedly evil government.

What corporation would back her and sponsor her and seek her out at this moment in time? Will she appear on Fox? What would she say?

What publishing company is going to invest millions in any book that she might write? What would she write?

There's nothing left, quite honestly. As much as people have come to believe that she is invincibly, she's not really. Her public image cannot possibly overcome the fallout from this event. I am not saying she will disappear entirely, I am saying her political career is over.

If she had a conscience, she would collapse in crisis and end up having a nervous breakdown from the guilt about this. I know I would, if I had put a target symbol and listed a woman's name for my supporters to pursue in some way - a woman who later was shot through the head.

Sarah is a commercial commodity. Her political pull has been waning for months. She is not on TV because what she says is so compelling or important. She has been on TV because she makes money for people. Not such a good idea to use her for this purpose anymore, dontcha think?

In fact I would go so far as to say that TLC running this show tonight is disrespectful to the victims involved in the Tucson Massacre.

Sarah Palin did not pull that trigger. But the irresponsible vindictive violent vicious hate speech she has fomented over the past 2 years has contributed to the decay of our political speech system.

Like Charles Manson, she "inspired" the idea that it is ok to not only place someone in the crosshairs, but to take it the distance. And fire.

Tell Sarah Palin: Violent threats have consequences

Sarah Palin has a special responsibility and opportunity in the wake of the attempted assassination of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords. For it was Sarah Palin and Sarah Palin alone who earlier put the crosshairs of a gun on Rep. Giffords. And so far, Palin's response has been Facebook prayers for the victims and an official denial that her widely distributed map involved gun sights at all. This is obscene duplicity at best.

Let us be clear. We do not know why the shooter targeted Rep. Giffords. Sarah Palin did not arm him or pull the trigger. We do not know if the shooter admired, loathed or ignored Sarah Palin. We will eventually know, and that will be a different accounting.

This is what Sarah Palin and others like her have wrought with their violent and vitriolic rhetoric that literally places gun sights on people who don't agree with their extreme views.

Sarah's whole national persona - from the moment she stepped onto the stage the night of her VP nomination speech - has been styled as an instigator inciting others to action. Best case, she's the sneering back seat driver. But it was a one-trick schtick, no substance, no bonafides, no successful record of governance, leadership or activism.

Who will want to be associated with more of that?

Leaves her looks for the fanboys, and the writing's on the wall.

She's not past her sell-by date, like we thought she'd be.

Her toxic contents have proven lethal. If she's not recalled, the market will take care of the rest.

On the gun sight/surveyor's symbol dustup - what a bunch of BS! It doesn't make sense, even for a dimwit like $P! And to let RAM speak for her instead of choosing to speak for herself appears very cowardly, IMHO. If she had a brain and any compassion (or if she cared about anyone besides SP), she would have recognized the perfect opportunity to rise above the partisan ugliness and start the healing process.

No need to say anything about Palin's wretched excuse for a propaganda machine which is her reality show.

Today the Beltway Media spent considerable time trying to insulate Palin and her map from any responsibility for the tragedy. Unfortunately no matter what they try the damage is done, too many people can put 2 and 2 together and figure it out for themselves. CNN especially was horrid in the non-stop efforts to protect her and it was absolutely disgusting to watch. Throw in a sitting Senator, Lamar Alexander, trying to protect Palin and tut-tut people who understand the link between her hate and the actions yesterday and you can understand why this country is standing on the abyss of a becoming a banana republic.

What's that thing rightwingers and Palin always say, something about taking responsibility for your actions? I guess that doesn't apply to them because they've been playing hot potato all day trying to make sure they don't get burnt by this. I simply can't believe that American voters put these people back in the majority in the House. Already they've broken over 8 of their promises, I hope the voters are watching.

Sarah Palin map put Giffords 'in crosshairs'

One theory about the gunman's motivation is that Gabrielle Giffords was featured on Sarah Palin's infamous "crosshairs" map, which targeted legislators who voted for Obama's healthcare bill. At the time, it was criticised as an incitement to violence.

Giffords, a third-term legislator, supported Obama's healthcare reform bill. This earned her a place on the map, posted on the internet by the former Republican vice-presidential candidate's Political Action Committee, that literally put Democrats in the crosshairs last spring after the bill passed.

"Don't retreat, instead - RELOAD!" was how Palin introduced the map to her Twitter followers. Days later, a vandal smashed the glass door of Giffords' Tucson office. Giffords' father told the New York Post that members of the Tea Party - the Republican party offshoot - "threatened" his daughter.

Giffords' Tea Party opponent in the 2010 election, Jesse Kelly, went even further with the violent rhetoric. Kelly's campaign held an event called "Get on Target for Victory in November." Description: "Help remove Gabrielle Giffords from office. Shoot a fully automatic M16 with Jesse Kelly."

Giffords' shooting underscores the fact that, as US commentator Matt Yglesias said, "gun imagery and electoral politics don't mix".

One of the worst things I read today was Palin distancing herself from the gun sight cross hairs on her snuff map. It is what it is, not surveyor targets. Own it or just shut up. Palin has always portrayed herself as a hunter in every aspect. She has always used words associated with guns and now she is a map surveyor? That's what she wants us to believe? What was Sarah Palin's Alaska about? I did not see her with surveying equipment or maps.

We eat therefore we hunt. When you hunt you use cross hairs. When you look at Palin’s snuff map she uses blood red cross hairs to show the congressional seats that are retiring signaling that those targets has been neutralized.

Where is Sarah's condemnation of violent assassination and collateral murder, if she in fact sees that as worthy of condemnation of the act, and compassion for the wounded and the families of the dead.

How many self described Christian conservatives can ignore her silence?

And if they do how can they and Sarah retain any credibility of righteousness.

Yesterday was an historic day of violence in this country, again.

I would not be surprised if many businesses have words of condolences on their web sights by Monday night and some may run spots speaking out against this type of violence.

But Palin's two wanna be a star daughters have neither the compassion nor common sense to at least show sympathy and speak out against violent acts and they harm they do.

I sincerely hope you are correct about there being enough legal foundations to bring a civil lawsuit against Palin. Since the standards are much lower than a criminal charge and people sue for all sorts of things these days, perhaps you are right.

I do believe that Palin's political career is over, especially since the Republican party seemed to be making a concerted effort to distance themselves from her even before this happened. They will never permit someone with that kind of horrific event connected with their name to represent them in any major political campaign.

Perhaps a major lawsuit against her, even if it is not won, might finally be enough to convince the hatemongers on radio and television to dial back their nastiness. For people like Beck, Limbaugh, Coulter and others who make an exceptional living by being hateful, only the threat of large monetary damages would be enough to convince them to tone down the vitriol.

It is sad beyond words that it took the death of a child and five others to finally bring us to this point.

The thing about the right's response to this is that they can go on TV as much as they want to deny this, but pretty, much, anyone with a quarter of a brain who knows about this assassination attempt and also hears that Sarah Palin put a target on her, figuratively, on a website, will hold Sarah responsible for this. No matter what the pundits say.

Someone, in attempting to take the blame off of Sarah compared this to the Kennedy assassination. Which is fitting. Little known fact: Kennedy had evil rhetoric spewed at him that rivals what has been said to Obama. (Really, the stuff aimed at Barack Obama is worse, but I'm grading on a curve, because the rhetoric was so much more civil then, so the difference is greater).

What is striking though is how people are still defending her. I can't believe it. Personally, I think she's not done. I don't know if these people who are commenting are paid -- they certainly seem pretty organized -- but the fact that so many people are still speaking out for her means she can still be counted on to be a draw for double digits in a primary. It just adds to her: I'm a victim of the left and media mystique.

Vanessa Stockwell ‎@Martha, I have no idea who these people are but I have never witnessed anything like this in my life. Its really sick!! I am worried about Gov Palin's safety as well as that of all Conservatives at this point. God help us.

    THIS ONE WAS DELETED INSTANTLY:
you are such a sad lot. Sarah will never accept responsibility for anything she says and does. She can't even keep a job. Words, like elections, have consequences and the lame excuse that 'those are surveyor marks, not crosshairs' is offensive. SP is the type who likes to fire up the crowd w/ her nasty incendiary remarks, but as long as a paycheck and more airtime follow, so what? No, she didn't pull the trigger in AZ, and maybe the shooter is a 'lone crazy', that doesn't mean that adult, aspiring leaders shouldn't be responsible for what they spew. You are all kool-aid drinking piteous people. And chastising the deputy for speaking the truth just shows how low you are all willing to go.

  163. I wish I believed that Sarah's heart could be touched by yesterday's senseless tragedy, especially the death of the 9 year old girl. Sadly, she's given us no reason to believe that's possible. I hope I'm wrong.

Even her offer of condolence rings empty with its vagueness and absence of any condemnation of violence or awareness of the horrific nature of the shootings.

I pray that Sarah won't fade away quietly as a result of this event. She needs to be exposed for the fraud that she is, and those who promoted her and those who blindly followed her need to be held accountable.

Sincere condolences?????? PUH-LEEZE!!! Sarah "Reload" Palin, the person who couldn't finish her term as governor because the temptation of multi-million dollar speaking gigs, first class travel was far too tempting, has done NOTHING to improve the lives of anyone but herself! Because you have LIED and ENCOURAGED VIOLENCE, Palin has BLOOD on her hands!!! You can't hide behind the first amendment when committing a crime against the national security of the United States. Using cross hairs, not denouncing hate speech, Palin has violated federal law! May the God you pray to have mercy on your soul!

Don Dunkelberger My main fear is the Left will try and use this tragedy to paint this kook as a right wing kook, to soil the image of the right or pass new gun laws.

Juanita Estrada Funny how the left wing loons sitting in their basements in only their dirty underwear and T-shirts are monitoring Sarah's FB page and all the comments, they want to play gotcha, watch out for the left pretending to be tea party and posting garbage, yet they don't monitor any left wing pages or the left wing at all full of violence and hate. Got this from weirdo left winger Chris Weston who just tried to friend me. who has weirdo crazy people on "charge sarah palin" fb page and he left comment on Bristol Palin's note, he sounds like shooter and him could be friends, hate the world garbage

  181. It's here where investigative journalism picks up where the corporate monopoly media left off. Reading the garbage posted by ilks like Sarah Palin must be read, must be deciphered and must be brought into the light. Yes, even though folks like Palin or Governor Jan Brewer are getting on their knees and praying to their Sky-Spook (they are so perverted), they will NOT address the issue. And that issue? Tighter control on firearms.

Folks who knew Jared Loughlin knew he was mentally ill. And with tighter gun control, people like Jared Loughner would have been more scrutinized, but with dirtwads like Brewer who embraces the Second...no hides behind, can say there was nothing she could do. Now she can. Allow people to buy firearms, but add a little more scrutiny.

This has been a difficult weekend for our nation and particularly for those of us in Tucson. This senseless act is so incomprehensible that it's even hard to imagine something this horrific could happen so close to home and touch many of us personally.

Several of us spent time today trying to come to a place of peace but it was difficult. I've worked through the anger and am in a place of numbness and just needing to retreat a bit.

Gryph...you state 'Today we need to mourn, and tomorrow hopefully, we begin to heal'. I fervently hope that part of that healing is that all of us step back and take a look at our own language, our own rhetoric and make a supreme effort to mend the divisions that this country has suffered for the past 10 years. We need to take the first step here and speak with respect, exercise tolerance when confronted with views other than our own and carry a torch for peace.

I am done speaking about Palin. I find when I talk about her or think about what she has brought to our discourse I am saddened and angered. Peace to you all.

Why does it take a public homicidal act to stir people's emotions when innocent people including children are killed everyday in this country arbitrarily or as bystanders? It's kind of offensive to deem certain people has having more value and thats what it sounds like you are doing here.

On the 8th a disturbed man finally opened fire on a woman whom he had in his crosshairs for several years. This is textbook for psychopathic behavior. Psycho breaks take time to fester, then BAM! Trust me, I've been there. Never to the murderous level as I could never aim and kill anyone but I have been so mentally "exhausted" that I've doing things I regret.

Yes, Gryphen, I truly believe too that SP's career is finished. I believe she's going to have a hard time finding work, and, whoever does hires her will lose their credibility and communal respect. No one would want to touch her now. Remember when Meg Stapleton once said that the world was Sarah's oyster, or some such thing like that? - meaning she had monetary offers to speak or try anything she wanted after her resignation.

Sarah can't get away with her cutesy folksy accent and her fake "Shirley Temple" (daddy's little girl) airs. That sickening syrupy stategy will not go over any more with the public, especially in light of this tragedy, and a little girl's life lost. Now she's forced to have to do some soul-searching and show some sombreness, seriousness, maturity.
She can never go back to those lucrative opportunity days.

She may get so desperate, she'll have to sell her "baby" story.

    Sarah is DELUSIONAL.

Like many Republicans, she remakes the reality around her to fit her self-vision. She can place cross-hairs on a map with 20 names and brag a few months later about her bulleyes being 90% effective (the only two congress-critters left were Giffords and a Rep. in WV).

Suddenly everybody is remembering all her talk about shooting and reloading(*) to shoot again... and just as suddenly those aren't cross-hairs, those aren't bulleyes, those are stray surveyors' marks affixed by some anonymous graphics student somewhere else and have nothing to do with Sarah.

Words have consequences for everybody else.

The media will cycle through this and run on to other stories, dragging viewer's attention with them. When it is time to package up a President, they'll be ready to push her forward again. They won't care if she is competent, or even sane, or if the Chatty Cathy string is hopelessly tangled, if they can sell the pretty package for top advertising dollar.

With the escalation in violence and militancy, in 2 years, this might be normal politics.

Sarah will run. God told her she was anointed to lead. The priestlings are ambitious, but not as ambitious as she is.

(*) The only reason the killer didn't reload, is that when he pulled out the second clip, a WOMAN HE HAD WOUNDED got up and grabbed it away from him! She must have thought she was already dead, or shock cocooned her from the pain, to even be able to move like that. When he pulled out the third clip, it sproinged and 2 men tackled him. Yeah, he sure took Palin's mantra to heart. How many more would he have killed if he'd have managed to reload?

Didn't they put out posters with the pictures and personal data of abortion providers marked with gunsights or some similar mark whenever one was killed? How can they say this was inadvertant/surveyor's mark or whatever? It's been used before. Hasn't it? Seems like it worked then too.
