Bill Maher has a message for Democrats and I think we need to listen.

I think that sometimes Bill Maher can be a little strident, and I certainly do not agree with him on all issues.

But his defense of Nancy Pelosi here is spot on.

And his call for Democrats to start showing some real balls goes right along with my thinking these last several years as well.

I always thought that our first Democratic Senator in decades, Mark Begich, could actually have won a second term if he had only acted more like Congressman for life Don Young.

I do not mean ideologically of course, but when people criticize Don Young he says "fuck you!"

And I don't mean that figuratively.

Republicans in Alaska, and most other places in the country, are arrogant assholes, and yet they keep getting reelected because the voting public takes that for confident leadership.

Alaska politicians Ted Stevens, Frank Murkowski, and Don Young were, and some still are, incredibly arrogant assholes who never apologized for ANYTHING.

If Democrats want to win elections they may not have to be actual assholes, but they do have to have the confidence of their values, and an unapologetic stand on the issues they believe in.

This upcoming blue wave may get a lot of Democrats into office, but if they want to stay there they better learn to stand defiant against bullshit attacks and attempts to paint them as wishy washy.

It seems Sarah Palin came slithering out of her hidey hole to attend Billy Graham's funeral.

Source
Courtesy of NPR:

Some 2,300 guests sat under a symbolic large white canvas tent in Charlotte, N.C., for the Rev. Billy Graham's funeral service on Friday.

The setting evoked the "canvas cathedral" — two circus tents pitched together in Los Angeles in 1949 — to shelter the thousands of people who came to watch Graham preach, according to the Billy Graham Library. "The Los Angeles Crusade," eight weeks of services, would help raise Graham to national prominence.

President Trump and Melania Trump sat in the front row of Graham's funeral service Friday. Vice President Pence and his wife, Karen, and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and her husband, Todd, were also there.

This just gives more credibility to the idea that Palin wants her next job to be as a fire and brimstone evangelical preacher.

Of course Palin's connection was only tenuous, her real connection is with Franklin Graham, the man now being credited with undermining his father's legacy.

A legacy it should be mentioned that also contained heaping amounts of antisemitism.

By the way Palin also got an dishonorable mention on Real Time last night.

Courtesy of Raw Story:

When talking about former communications director Hope Hicks, Maher recalled the way she helped the campaign by steaming Trump’s pants while he was wearing them. She was the keeper of the steamer.

“Hope Hicks feels like she can be more effective steaming the pants of those in the private sector,” he joked.

When it came to Jared Kushner, he couldn’t believe someone would be so stupid as to hold a meeting in the White House for his own personal business affairs.

“I want to see his birth certificate,” Maher said. “I think it’s going to say: Birthplace: Alaska. Birth name: Jared Palin.”

Palin may want to be an evangelical preacher, but her real job will always be to serve as punchline for late night comedians.

Bill Maher mocks Trumpsters over the border wall.

My favorite part of this was that Maher delivered it while sitting right next to Anthony Scaramucci, who holds the record for the shortest stint in any administration ever.

Maher also made fun of the Nunes memo, suggesting that it read like a glorified "Facebook post that you scan before you click unfriend."

Real Time returned last night and Bill Maher wasted no time in courting controversy by talking about the #MeToo movement.

Maher is making some very good points here, that I think a number of us have also discussed in the past.

The #MeToo movement is overall a very positive thing, but it can render itself completely ineffective if those participating do not exercise a little objectivity.

Bill Maher's New Rules: Get it in Writing.

This was a great one last night. And oh so true.

I have to admit I'm a little jealous that Maher found such a great bad photo of Sarah Palin which apparently escaped my attention.

Saturday, August 12, 2017

Last night Bill Maher's New Rules featured a face familiar to all of us here on IM.

What did he call Sarah Palin?

The Daenerys Stillborn of the House of Pancakes? Yeah, I liked that.

Of course what most people are talking about concerning the show today, was this:
I am not sure that is an actual unretouched photo, but I firmly believe one just like it exists somewhere.

Pretty good show last night though it is becoming increasingly obvious that the Trump administration is becoming so ridiculous as to defy any attempts at parody.

All Maher has to do is dictate what is actually happening to his audience and then wait for the shocked gasps and uneasy laughter.

Bill Maher laments the end of the summer mental health break.

My favorite part:

"So I don't know how this happened, or when exactly this stupidifying of the whole year. Maybe it was the advent of Fox News. Maybe it was when we made stars out of the Kardashians. Maybe it was the day John McCain decided to let an ill advised summer fling with a ditzy moron last all the way into November.  Whatever it was we have got to get summer back. We've got to be able to enjoy stupidity again. Hard earned, respectable, stupidity. That's what my goal is in the age of Trump."

By the way the whole show last night was very solid.

From the opening monologue, to the interview with  Dan Savage, to the great folks on the panel, the show pretty entertaining from start to finish.

Which is great, because the show last week was absolutely terrible and was bad to the point where I almsot skipped this one.

Glad I didn't.

Last night Bill Maher addressed progress and the jobs we will never, and should never, see again.

I thought last night's show was pretty entertaining, though I could have done without that Breitbart apologist coming on and attempting to suggest that his website does the country a service by covering the news stories that the MSM will not cover.

In other words the fake ones.

However apparently he got schooled by intelligence analyst Malcom Nance who demanded an apology for a false article on Breitbart that resulted in he and his family receiving 31 death threats.

Bill Maher calls Democrats out over their passivity.

Even if you are not a fan of Bill Maher, if you are a progressive you need to hear this .

And what's more we need to hear a lot more talk like this.

Until we figure out that playing by the rules makes us the losers, we will never be the winners again.

Bill Maher has a message for liberal purists, "Go f**k yourself!"

Courtesy of Raw Story:

“That begins learning the difference between an imperfect friend and a deadly enemy,” Maher said. He went on to quote Jill Stein, who famously said both candidates were like being murdered just in different ways. “Well, I’m sure with Trump in charge and a racist attorney general there will be a lot more of both.”

Before the election, Edward Snowden tweeted “2016: The difference between Donald Trump and Goldman Sachs.” Maher noted that Trump has actually hired Goldman Sachs executives and former staffers to work for him. “The only people he hasn’t hired from Goldman Sachs is Goldman and Sachs.”

He then cited Cornell West who called Trump a neofascist and Clinton a ‘neoliberal disaster.’ “I don’t even know what a neoliberal disaster even means but whatever it is, isn’t it better than a fascist one? Have you people lost your f*cking minds?

“If Hillary was president now, would we be turning the clock back on the one issue on which there is no more time: climate change?” Maher asked. “Would we have to wonder if our president’s fascination with dictators is foreshadowing a coup here? Would we ever have to wonder if she was Putin’s b*tch? And instead of trying to kick millions off health care to pay tax cuts for herself, she would be trying to raise her own taxes to get more people covered. She wouldn’t be complaining, ‘It’s complicated! Who knew?’ She knew.”

At the end of his rant Maher suggests that the liberal purists who refused to recognize the clear and obvious differences between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton should go fuck themselves with "a locally grown organic cucumber."

That's a little crude for my tastes, but I certainly agree with the sentiment.

Our country would be in such better shape if these idiots had not allowed themselves to be manipulated by the Russians into believing that Hillary was winning because she was "the anointed one," and had put on their big boy pants and cast their vote for the good of the nation instead of pouting like children because they did not get their way.

Bill Maher tells Liberals that they are wasting their time trying to win over Trump supporters with facts.

Courtesy of Raw Story:

“Trump supporters aren’t changing their minds because the problem isn’t in the mind. It’s lower. It’s emotional,” Maher said. “He could have Ann Frank’s skeleton in his closet. They’d all vote for him again.”

Asking why, Maher walked through the cultural crisis many of the undervalued white voters face that Trump managed to harness. “I think it’s a gut feeling that the world has changed and they don’t like it,” he said. “Trump is going to change it back to the way it was.”

Speaking occasionally in a thick southern accent, Maher railed against “damn Mexicans” flooding baseball fields like “the parking lot at Home Depot.” He was furious about two boys kissing on the kiss-cam. “And did I mention Bruce Jenner has tits now?”

“I ain’t no racist, but why does American need to have a black Santa Claus?” Maher asked. “I think I speak for most liberals when I say, I don’t care about black Santa. I don’t think it’s going to make the Little Drummer Boy start cutting himself. But to Trump voters, making Santa black is unthinkable. It’d be like making Jesus Middle Eastern.”

Not only was that pretty damn funny, but it was also pretty damn true.

And I think is what really frustrates those of us whose thinking is reality based.

In my mind if Russia is working hard to get a candidate elected, that disqualifies them out of hand.

And if a candidate is caught on tape talking about grabbing pussies, that is a non-starter.

But to the Trump supporters those are either forgivable sins, or bullshit made up by the "liberal media."

Stupid is stupid, and it is apparently impervious to change.

So in response we just need to flood the upcoming elections with smart, liberal, forward thinking candidates, and push these paint chip eaters back to the fringe where they belong.

Last night Bill Maher said that "Republicans need to learn the difference between being conservative and just being a dick." Wait, there's a difference?

Courtesy of Raw Story:

In the New Rules segment of HBO’s Real Time, host Bill Maher tore into the Republican Party for rolling back safety and environmental regulations simply because “they’re d*cks.”

“So much of what they have done since Trump took over isn’t moving the party in a more conservative direction. It’s also not Libertarian. It’s just a d*ck move,” Maher began.

“Republicans have to learn the difference between being a conservative and just being a d*ck,” the HBO host said before adding that conservatism has become “just about some warped idea that the way to show strength is by being a d*ck and that, in a nutshell, is what Republicanism has become – looking at any problem and saying, ‘What would a d*ck do?’”

The examples that Maher provides are brutal, and make it virtually impossible for most of us to believe that anything motivates the Republicans other than greed and abject sadism.

I mean seriously, asbestos?

It's like we are living in a country where half the politicians are fighting to protect as many people as possible, and the other half are attempting to loosen the gun laws so they can walk around arbitrarily shooting people in the head.

And I have to say it really makes me worry about the future of this country.

Last night Bill Maher took aim at Donald Trump's enablers.

Courtesy of Raw Story:

Singling out Vice President Mike Pence, press secretary Sean Spicer, and advisors Kellyanne Conway and Stephen Miller, the Real Time host called them out for going on TV and pretending, “Trump didn’t say what everybody just heard him say.”

“New rule,” Maher began, “If you get up everyday and try and make Donald Trump’s ludicrous and dangerous pronouncements sound normal and sane, you are an enabler.”

“Twenty years from now when your kids ask you, over a glass of Soylent Green, ‘What did you do during the Trump years, daddy?’ You don’t want your answer to be, ‘My job was to go on TV and say my job was to go on TV and pretend Trump didn’t say what everybody just heard him say,'” Maher continued.

“Without these professional liars and deniers, there is no Trump,” Maher added. “It takes a village to help a man-child stay in power. And the excuse, ‘I am just doing my job’ is starting to sound a whole lot like I was just following orders.”

You know just last week I wondered what kind of person can go on TV and defend Donald Trump in the morning and then look at themselves in the mirror at night and not want to hold their head under the bathwater until the bubbles stop.

I still don't know, because I can tell you that if it were MY job to defend Donald Trump you would have found me face down in my tub on day two of my employment.

Bill Maher eviscerated the Republicans last night on Real Time. And it was glorious.

I do not typically use words like eviscerate, or overdo hyperbole, however Maher really outdid himself last night.

Here is the transcript:

“Someone has to tell me what’s magic about a capital R,” Bill Maher asked. “The kind that goes after your name if you are a Republican. Because if you have one of those, you can get away with pretty much anything when it comes to selling out, cursing out, or compromising your own country.”

“When it was Hillary Clinton with an unsecured email server, Republicans wanted to ‘lock her up,”He continued. “But President Trump still uses the unsecured Android phone he had before he got elected. And he has been warned that with an old consumer grade phone like that someone could easily hack into his Twitter account and start posting crazy messages. And how would we be able to tell?”

"So a couple of weeks before the Superbowl Bill O'Reilly asked Trump why he always defended Putin, who O'Reilly said was a killer? A reasonable question, since the last two guys who were as cozy as Putin and Trump held their bilateral talks on Brokeback Mountain."

"But again Trump took Putin's side over America, saying 'We got killers here too. You think our country's so innocent?' If a Democrat said that before the Superbowl they would be in Guantanamo Bay by halftime. Same as they would they did this."

“But if you have the magic (R), no problem. Trump repeatedly said he was going to donate to military charities. Then didn’t. Then lied about it. He compared our intelligence agencies to Nazis. He said McCain, who spent five years in a Vietnamese prison, wasn’t a war hero because ‘I like people who weren’t captured.”

“I gotta got to say to all you flag waving Right Wingers who always say, ‘I am not just going to stand here and let you run down America,’ You are standing there and letting Trump run down America,” Maher remarked. “Donald Trump could go to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers and say, ‘Maybe if he had done something he wouldn’t be so unknown.’ And Republicans would be okay with that too.”

"When Trump said I can stand in the middle of 5th Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn't lose voters, he wasn't making a joke. He's never made a joke. Unless his entire life is some kind of Andy Kaufman style performance art, in which case stop it."

"No he was simply stating an actual fact for once, which is if you have the magic (R) after your name you can drive a Hummer through a day care center and Fox News will say the babies were 'asking for it.'"

"Meanwhile in an alternative universe where a Democrat is President, Obama once said 'We have no been perfect.' And for eight years the Republicans screamed that he was on an eight year apology tour. They lost their shit whenever there as a picture of him committing high crimes like not having his hand over his heart during a song. Or saluting with coffee in his hand."

Maher then pointed out that W. once saluted with a dog in his arms, and that he sat frozen for seven minutes after hearing the country was under attack on 9-11.

"And Republicans defended THAT and we all just accept this. America is the Republican party's bitch, and they can criticize and betray her, but YOU can't. Even though Obama spent two terms talking up the troops, talking up the country, how much he loved it, how 'in no other country is my story even possible.' It didn't matter, the conservatives all nodded when Rudy Giuliani said 'I do not believe that President Obama loves America.' As opposed to Giuliani who happened to be mayor on 9-11 so that made him America's mayor and a hero whose great act of heroism is that nothing fell on his head. To paraphrase Donald Trump, I like mayors who don't let towers collapse.

"A few weeks ago an old but very smoking gun emerged from the Nixon era. When it came out that in 1968 when President Lyndon Johnson was trying to end the war in Vietnam candidate Richard Nixon was actively, purposefully, undermining the peace talks because he wanted the war to go on so he could have it as an election issue."

"You would think that the America First crowd would find that a bridge too far. Fuck no."

"Dick Cheney once outed a CIA agent just to say 'Fuck you' to her husband.  Reagan sold weapons to Iran, a country they all want to bomb now, in an brazened defiance of American law. And instead of being impeached he was elevated to sainthood and now rides horses in heaven with Jesus.”

“Why do Republicans get away with this? Why do they have patriotic immunity? America is like a dysfunctional family. The Democrats, are the older mature son who works hard and does everything right, but somehow it is never good enough. And the Republicans are the young asshole son who is a fuck-up and it doesn’t matter how many times he crashes the Camaro, daddy buys him a new one.”

"I know it's not really important, like which department stores are selling Ivanka's panty liners. You know ALL of America's intelligence agencies say a foreign power tampered with our election to favor the Republican, and they say also that they don't trust that republican, our president, with our state secrets, and yet the theme of Trumps inaugural was 'America First.' Please, his ego is first, his hotels are second, Russia's third, I'd be surprised if  America made the top ten."

See, what did I tell you?

Those are excellent points to which I would really like a Republican to try and provide a reasonable response.

Bill Maher “the Supreme Court pick was stolen… The only person I would accept is Merrick Garland.”

Courtesy of Mediaite:

Bill Maher tonight said that Democrats should “stop bringing a knife to a gun fight” and get tougher in pushing back on President Trump‘s Supreme Court pick.

Because as far as Maher’s concerned, “the Supreme Court pick was stolen… The only person I would accept is Merrick Garland.”

I really did not think the show was all that good last night, but I have to admit that this part almost inspired me to start applauding.

The problem with Democrats is that we are so fucking reasonable, and we are fighting against some of the most unreasonable people on the planet.

Maher is right that our opportunity to put a justice on the Supreme Court was stolen from us, and if we do not stand up and be just as unyielding in return this will keep on happening to us.

I don't necessarily think we can hold out for the entire four years, but then again we don't know until we try.

Keith Olbermann on Real Time last night. "We were invaded."

"The point of a war, other than to gain territory, is to put the guy you want in charge of somebody elses' country. And we're now only debating, after the article in the New York Times yesterday, how much the Russians decided our election."

That for me said it all.

It was great having Real Time back on last night, it has been sorely missed.

And you did not get a chance to watch it you are in luck, because the whole show has been uploaded, by HBO mind you, onto YouTube.

Enjoy.

Bill Maher's New Rules was pretty great last night.

There was a lot of very interesting debate last night (He even had the Liberal Redneck on!), but for me the best part might have been Maher's final remarks:

"You can unfriend somebody whose politics you don't like, but you can't unfriend 47% 0f America. Roommates can move out, patriots can't. America needs you, more than ever. Right here. With me. And the rest of the resistance. Until we can figure out how to REALLY make America great again. And don't ever let them forget, we're still here."

Yes, yes we are. And we will definitely some back in larger numbers and with more focus than ever before.

Remember progress IS coming.

Ever once in a while it just temporarily loses its way.

The full Bill Maher interview with President Obama.

I thought this was very interesting and informative.

I noticed that Maher tried to lead the President to remark on some fairly controversial issues like legalizing marijuana, single payer health care, and for profit news outlets, but he was fairly deft in avoiding too much controversy.

I also noticed how deferential Maher was and how star struck he was to be in the presence of a man who he clearly admires greatly.

I should also point out that the rest of the show Friday night was not exactly a laugh fest.

Bill Maher shared his stress over this election with the audience and his panel, and at times I began to think he might have to take a break in the middle of the show to go smoke a little pot and calm down.

However I really cannot say that I blame him as my own emotions have been all over the place and at this point I just want the whole damn thing to end so that I can start worrying about something else, ANYTHING else.

BTW this is the full 37 minute interview which is longer than the 18 minute one shown on Real Time last night, and yes it will help ease your mind.

On last night's Real Time Bill Maher pointed out the real reason Trump is the GOP nominee. America is full of stupid people.

Courtesy of Raw Story:

“Last November when Trump was losing in Iowa, he said in Iowa, to Iowans,’How stupid are the people of Iowa?’ Maher said, playing the Clip of Trump. He noted that Trump is now leading in Iowa and expected to win. “So I guess he got his answer. That’s how stupid.”

It isn’t only Republicans either. According to Maher. Many of Bernie Sanders’ supporters have switched to being Gary Johnson voters. Yet, Johnson essentially opposes everything that Sanders stands for, with the exception of marijuana legalization.

Maher quoted results from recent polls where Americans were asked a series of what should have been very simple questions. Things like: “Does the sun go around the earth or the earth around the sun.” A full quarter of Americans got the answer wrong. At the same time, 35 percent of Americans can’t name one branch of government. Even the Governor of Oklahoma, an avid Trump supporter, got that one wrong. Sadly, only 36 percent can name all three branches and who knows how many people think the kardashianK are one of them? Maher cited a whopping 80 percent of Americans who think Ramadan is those cheap noodles college kids eat.

In case you are wondering how Maher can talk about stupid people in America without bringing up Sarah Palin, well he can't and you can see her mentioned at the 3:25 mark.

You know we are constantly warned not to call stupid people stupid, because it hurts their stupid feelings.

But the facts are the facts, and if they were not so stupid they would realize that.

Besides the increasing numbers of stupid people is not an accident.

This has been a long term plan by the conservatives to undermine education in this country by teaching kids to fill in the box rather than to think outside of one, to value test taking over critical thinking, and to create cogs in a machine rather than to reward imagination and creativity.

And when children are not having their inner light dimmed by an education system that does not value their uniqueness, they are home in front of a TV watching reality shows which celebrate tantrums, insults, and immaturity.

The question to ask is not how we got a Donald Trump candidacy, the question to ask is why did it take so long?

On last night Real Time Bill Maher warns us about Donald Trump's "Basket of Deplorables" coming to Washington, and brags that he made Trump produce his birth certificate in court.

Courtesy of Raw Story:

In a segment that is long overdue, HBO Real Time host Bill Maher took a long look at the army of advocates GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump deploys to cable TV every night — using them as a preview of who you can expect to be running the country if he becomes president.

Maher began by listing off some of the more prominent talking heads who are cable regulars sent out each day to defend the worst that Trump has to offer.

“Steve Cortes and Katrina Pierson and Chris Christie and Omarosa are trundling down the corridors of power, bumping into the walls,” he explained. “We’re thinking of giving these people the reins of power? I wouldn’t put them on a bus without asking the driver to make sure they didn’t miss their stop.”

At the end of the bit, which was extremely funny, Maher brags about the lawsuit that Trump filed against him during which he actually produced his birth certificate to prove that his mother did not fuck an ape.

All I can say is that I can hardly wait to see what SNL does with all of this tonight.
