And even with that, Rubio REFUSED to say that he would reject those donations.

That tells you essentially all you need to know about the NRA's influence.

Amid endless calls for “thoughts and prayers” instead of legislative action in response to mass shootings, a woman in Michigan decided to take matters into her own hands. 

After Wednesday's mass shooting in Parkland, Florida, Fern Malila mailed a letter and a check in the amount of "thoughts and prayers" to Representative Jack Bergman, a Michigan Republican 

“Dear Rep. Bergman,” she wrote, “since you and your colleagues in Congress seem to feel that this is the solution to mass murder, please accept this contribution.”

"I did it because I'm hearing the same arguments after each and every time this happens," Malila explained to Newsweek on Friday. "Each and every news media person says contact your congressman, and Congress doesn't do anything."

A post about this went viral on Reddit, receiving over 300 comments, and it looks as if it has started a mini movement:

"My check is going in the mail today to Senator Marco Rubio — another NRA puppet!" one Florida resident wrote. "Thanks for the inspiration!"

I think it's a great idea.

And a way of demonstrating the hypocrisy shown by these lawmakers. 

If they received a deluge of mail containing checks that simply said "Thoughts and Prayers" I think at the very least it would get their attention.

Former presidents band together to participate in concert to raise money for victims of the numerous hurricanes.

All five living former US presidents will participate in a benefit concert to raise money for hurricane relief efforts in Texas later this month, the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library Foundation announced today. 

Former Presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush and Jimmy Carter will appear at Reed Arena at Texas A&M University on October 21 for the "Deep From the Heart: The One America Appeal" concert. 

The event will also feature rock and country musicians including ALABAMA, the Gatlin Brothers, Lyle Lovett, Robert Earl Keen, Sam Moore, Yolanda Adams, Cassadee Pope and Stephanie Quayle. Country music artist Lee Greenwood will emcee the event.

"The 43rd President and I, and our distinguished colleagues in this 'One America Appeal,' are very grateful to these wonderful performers -- some of them old friends, some of them new -- for giving their time and talent to help the urgent cause of hurricane recovery in Texas, Florida and the Caribbean," President George H.W. Bush said in a statement. "It's important that those affected by these devastating storms know that, even if the path to recovery feels like a road that goes on forever, we're with them for the long haul."

I have to admit when I first read this I thought they were only raising money for the folks in Texas that were victimized by the hurricanes, but a closer reading revealed that they are raising money for ALL of the hurricane victims, including Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

Can you even believe that we are living in a time when one concert is being put on to raise money for the victims of back to back hurricanes?

And people say climate change is not real.

All I can say is that it is certainly a good thing that we have all of these ex-presidents around to provide some leadership in this area, because the idiot currently in the White House has no fucking idea what he is doing.

Turns out the Mercer family billionaires are helping to fund Trump's Russia defense.

Billionaire Robert Mercer and his wife Diana donated almost $200,000 to the legal defense fund of the Republican Party on the day that President Donald Trump fired former FBI Director James Comey, financial filings show. 

The combined $193,400 donation the Mercers made on May 9 went to the GOP legal fund that Trump has been drawing from to pay the lawyers defending him during the investigation into whether Russia interfered in the 2016 election. 

The Mercers are just one of several billionaire couples donating heavily to the fund in recent months, according to the filings with the Federal Election Commission (FEC).

Interesting, that a man who claims to be worth multiple billions of dollars is always expecting others to pick up the check. 

I don't really think their money will prove sufficient to protect Donald Trump from justice.

Not with Robert Mueller on the case.

A Minneapolis bar owner who donated money to the former grand wizard of the Ku Klux Klan, is going to have to find new employees. 

Workers at Club Jager say they’re all quitting after Thursday night’s shift. About half the staff quit earlier this week when news broke that DeRoma donated $500 to David Duke’s senate campaign.

De Roma told WCCO his donation was “basically free speech.” He also called the controversy blown up beyond what it should be.

Yeah why can't a guy donate money to a former KKK leader's senate campaign without losing the respect of all of his employees?

It's almost like they do not realize this is Donald Trump's America now. 

George Clooney and his wife pledge 1 million dollars to fight Right Wing extremism in America.

George and Amal Clooney have announced a partnership with the Southern Poverty Law Center to combat “bigotry and hate” in the wake of the violence in Charlottesville, Virginia. 

The Clooney Foundation for Justice says that it will bestow a grant of $1m to the SPLC in order to assist the civil rights organization in its attempts to combat violent extremism in the US, following the death of counter-protester Heather Heyer at a white supremacist rally in the campus city earlier this month. 

“Amal and I wanted to add our voice (and financial assistance) to the ongoing fight for equality,” George Clooney said. “There are no two sides to bigotry and hate.” 

“We are proud to support the Southern Poverty Law Center in its efforts to prevent violent extremism in the United States,” the pair added in a statement. “What happened in Charlottesville, and what is happening in communities across our country, demands our collective engagement to stand up to hate.”

Keep in mind that most terrorist attacks in this country are perpetrated by Right Wing extremists.

 And since Trump and his cohorts don't seem to believe that terrorism exists unless it is perpetrated by an Islamic person with brown skin I guess that leaves it up to private citizens and liberal Hollywood activists to do the heavy lifting.

Barack and Michelle Obama to donate 2 million dollars to summer jobs program in Chicago.

Former President Barack Obama announced Wednesday that he and his wife, Michelle, are donating $2 million to summer jobs programs in Chicago. 

“One of the things that we’ll be starting this year is Michelle and I are personally going to donate $2 million to our summer jobs programs here in the community,” he said at the South Shore Cultural Center. "[It's] so that right away young people can get to work and we can start providing opportunities to all of them.” 

The former president used the event to unveil plans for a 200,000-square-foot campus on Chicago’s South Side that will house the Obama Presidential Center. Obama said the center will be used to "train the next generation of leadership, the Michelle Robinsons of today and the Barack Obamas of today."

Gee, what a hypocrite.

What does he think he is doing supporting the future leaders of tomorrow like he always said he was going to do once he was out of office?

Wasn't it just a few days ago that people were tearing out their hair over the fact that Obama is receiving a $400,000 speaker's fee to talk about health care?

Oh wait, apparently they are still tearing their hair out.

So I guess that since Chaffetz's foot is all better now thanks in part to Obamacare, he feels free to make a huge ass out of himself again.

The Freedom From Religion Foundation rakes in over $100,000 in donations, all in the name of vice president Mike Pence.

The Freedom From Religion Foundation is delighted to announce that it has received a $100,000-plus boost to its legal fund via donations in Vice President Mike Pence's name. FFRF began its "Give dollars and cents to counteract Pence" campaign in early November and, as of March 31, has raised $104,829. 

FFRF is a state/church watchdog with more than 27,000 largely freethinking (atheist and agnostic) members. 

"We warmly thank the 1,905 donors to date who have given from $1 to $5,000," says FFRF Co-President Annie Laurie Gaylor. 

FFRF's ongoing campaign urges: 

"Send a message to Mike Pence and his boss: The only wall we need is between church and state. Your gift to FFRF's legal fund in Mike Pence's name will be subversive (and deductible for income tax purposes). We'll use your kind donation to fight the imposition of religion by our government under the guise of 'religious liberty.' We'll put your donation to work to shore up the fence Pence needs to honor: the wall of separation between state and church." 

 And FFRF is right to keep the focus on Mike Pence, because if we actually do see Trump impeached this Bible thumping, woman hating, pig will be our new president. 

You also might remember that Planned Parenthood also experienced a rush of donations in Pence's name back in November of 2016.

Founder of eBay commits 100 million to fight against fake news.

The fight against fake news got a sizeable boost to its coffers Wednesday. Billionaire Pierre Omidyar, founder of eBay, committed $100 million to support investigative journalism and stop fake news. 

The funding will be spread out over the next three years and work to bolster independent media across the globe, Omidyar's philanthropic group—the Omidyar Network—announced. The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, the group behind the bombshell Panama Papers, will receive a grant of $4.5 million. Most of the grants will go to institutions outside the U.S. 

"Across the world, we see a worrying resurgence of authoritarian politics that is undermining progress towards a more open and inclusive society," said Matt Bannick, Omidyar Network managing partner, in a statement. "A lack of government responsiveness and a growing distrust in institutions, especially the media, are eroding trust. Increasingly, facts are being devalued, misinformation spread, accountability ignored, and channels that give citizens a voice withdrawn. These trends cannot become the norm and we must protect the principles of openness, participation, and accountability."

Every little bit helps, and 100 million dollars in not exactly a little bit. 

So now Omidyar joins Google and Facebook as those on the cutting edge of fighting against the kind of misinformation that helped this country elect the most unqualified president in its 241 year history.

Personally I hope this is only the beginning.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has received more than $19 million since Saturday, and has hundreds of thousands of new members since it took action against President Trump's executive order calling for a 90-day ban on nationals from seven predominantly Muslim countries entering the United States and an indefinite pause on admitting refugees from Syria. 

The ACLU announced Sunday evening it had raised $19.4 million from 290,000 donations since Saturday. 

The average it takes in per year is $3 million to $4 million, according to Reuters reporter Dustin Volz. The donations and membership growth is “unprecedented,” Anthony Romero, the ACLU’s executive director, told Yahoo News. 

“I’ve never seen anything like this,” Romero said. “People are fired up and want to be engaged. What we’ve seen is an unprecedented public reaction to the challenges of the Trump administration.”

Journalists have been wondering out loud if the Women's March after the inauguration was a one time thing, or whether the momentum would carry forward.

I think we have our answer.

The Internet Archive, a digital library nonprofit that preserves billions of webpages for the historical record, is building a backup archive in Canada after the election of Donald Trump. Today, it began collecting donations for the Internet Archive of Canada, intended to create a copy of the archive outside the United States. 

“On November 9th in America, we woke up to a new administration promising radical change,” writes founder Brewster Kahle. “It was a firm reminder that institutions like ours, built for the long-term, need to design for change. For us, it means keeping our cultural materials safe, private and perpetually accessible. It means preparing for a web that may face greater restrictions. It means serving patrons in a world in which government surveillance is not going away; indeed it looks like it will increase.”

The San Francisco-based Internet Archive is comprised of several different preservation efforts, spanning nearly every medium. As of 2012, the entire archive held 10 petabytes of data; for reference, Facebook’s entire photo and video collection totaled 100 petabytes around the same time. Alongside films and books, the archive holds thousands of early software programs and video games that can be emulated on modern systems. It’s particularly known for the Wayback Machine, which continuously crawls the web to archive pages over the course of decades. 

The Internet Archive provides some of the most comprehensive preservation of our digital ephemera, for both intellectual study and practical use — including journalistic fact checking. Kahle estimates it will cost “millions” of dollars to host a copy of the Internet Archive in Canada, but it would shield its data from some American legal action.

Okay so it's not the WHOLE internet, but it is the archive and protecting that is very important.

I was directly in front of this customer in line, I stopped at the exit to show my 2 year old a Christmas ornament and witnessed first-hand that the Michaels’ employees did nothing to provoke this verbal attack, and in fact treated all customers with professionalism and courtesy. I was so shocked by this unprovoked attack that I captured 17 minutes of it on video on my phone. I am starting this gofundme because I’d like to do something to try to make it up to the employee who was the main target of this racist attack. I’d like to show her that many people are horrified by how this woman treated her, and that we stand with her and appreciate her hard work. She inspired me because despite the hateful words that were being hurled in her direction, she stood in that entranceway calm and unmoving to protect her staff and customers. New ad from Gays Against Guns calls out Senators who are in the pocket of the NRA.

Gays Against Guns (GAG) is in full-force this week. The queer anti-gun group released a new video that calls out every U.S. senator who has taken money from the NRA in exchange for helping block gun safety laws. 

The video uses the vocals of NYC house music and legendary drag figure Kevin Aviance of the seminal House of Aviance, as well as DJ Uri Dalal. “Puppet of the NRA” is intended as a message to voters as they hit the polls on Nov. 8 not to reelect this group of senators who are in the pocket of the NRA. 

“Uri and I love the work that GAG has been doing to bring down the gun lobby that blocks smart safety laws, so it was my honor and pleasure to lend my talent to this fierce video calling out the NRA puppets who need to scram from Washington next year,” Aviance told The Huffington Post.

Okay I have to admit that I actually found that advertisement a little annoying, however I am quite happy to learn that there is a group called "Gays Against Guns." That's new to me.

And believe me, as we learned from the shooting at the Pulse Club, bullets do not differentiate concerning sexual or gender identification.

A group of Democrats came together Sunday to raise money to rebuild a Republican headquarters that was firebombed in North Carolina on Saturday night. The GOP headquarters in Orange County, N.C., suffered major damage when an explosive device was thrown through a window on Saturday night, according to officials. 

The words “Nazi Republicans leave town or else” were spray-painted on a nearby building. 

Dallas Woodhouse, executive director of the North Carolina Republican Party, denounced the attack, calling it “political terrorism.” He said all Americans “should be outraged by this hate-filled and violent attack against our democracy.” 

On Sunday, David Weinberger began a GoFundMe page to raise $10,000 to rebuild the Hillsborough, N.C., headquarters. 

“As Democrats, we are starting this campaign to enable the Orange County, N.C., Republican office to re-open as soon as possible,” the page said in the story section. 

The group said that while it’s still unclear who attacked the office, or why, one thing is clear: “This is not how Americans resolve their differences.”

Well put.

There are, as you might imagine, a number of us who are more than a little suspicious as to who firebombed this building.

Of course Donald Trump is convinced that he knows who did it.

Well.....maybe.

However it should be noted that both sides have been known to fake this kind of thing in years past.

Knowing that some people came out very aggressively on social media against liberals who donated.

That included MSNBC contributor Ana Marie Cox who got into a protracted Twitter battle with her detractors.

And, folks, the money wasn't going to directly to them. No one here made a *donation to the GOP* tonight.

The Twitter backlash included reminders of some of the nasty political attacks that have some out of this office in North Carolina and charges that they would certainly not do the same for Democrats if the roles were reversed.

Personally I am glad that the Democrats raised money like this.

Sure the Republican approach to a firebombing of a Democratic headquarters would probably be to show up with marshmallows and stand around singing camp songs while it burned, but then again we are not them, now are we?

Besides if we don't take the high road, then who will?

So SarahPAC only has $154,347 left?

I refuse to accept that my fifteen minutes of fame has finally come to an end.

Today the October quarterly report came out, and let's just say that Palin's days of living off the mentally challenged in this country are all but over.

When the quarter began the fund had $171,686.

It brought in a measly $166,090 over a three month period.

And it spent $183,429. (Including $20,000 to political campaigns.)

Leaving it with only $154,347 at the time of this report.

Remember that in the last quarterly report we learned that the PAC started with $267,574, brought in $149,246, and spent $245,136.

We thought THAT was pathetic, and it was, but this report essentially proves that it is all over but the crying.

I did a quick rundown of some of the numbers and found the expenditures to be much the same as they have been all along, Though there are significantly less of them.

Consultants pocketed a cool $57,000. (And yes it is still Northstar Strategies and Tim Crawford who are receiving that money. Crawford and Northstar were also reimbursed for travel and lodging expenses.)

Postage and direct mail still approximately cost SarahPAC a whopping $51,000. (Can you say "money laundering?")

They spent about $1,670 on fundraising. (What a waste.)

The fund is also still paying Marilyn Lane and Carol Ryan for "clerical" work.

And attorney fees cost them $6.738, with the largest portion going to the law offices of Baker and Hostetler which apparently is the firm representing SarahPAC.

At some point soon the operating costs for this slush fund will far exceed the amount that Palin can still squeeze out of the pockets of these poor ignorant slobs and then completely drain the few dollars left behind each month.

I imagine when that finally happens we will see this sad little grifting operation finally come to an end.

 Then Track Palin will have to start paying his own attorney fees. Bummer!

Donald Trump and his children have made over 7 million dollars so far from campaign contributions.

Republican Donald Trump has so far paid $7.7 million in campaign contributions to his own companies and children, according to a filing with the Federal Elections Commission, and as the campaign transitions to the general election those payments are increasing. In May, they totaled at least $1.1 million—nearly 20 percent of all campaign spending that month—and in July, another $800,000 came into the Trump brood. 

Campaign finance laws on the topic are hazy and contradictory, largely because no candidate for federal office has ever had such a sprawling business empire that could be employed for a campaign. The FEC allows candidates to rent themselves their own office space—as the Trump campaign does at Trump Tower—but bans them from collecting royalties on any memoirs purchased by the campaign. Money ultimately flows back to the candidate in both cases but the FEC has issued divergent rules.

In July alone, Trump's campaign paid $169,758.33 in rent to Trump Tower Corporation LLC, $48,239.77 for rent and catering at Trump National Golf Club in Weschester, $1,000 to Trump Restaurants LLC, and $428.53 worth of Trump's bottled water Trump Ice. In May, Trump's campaign spent $3,938.58 at the vineyard run by his son Eric. Campaign dollars are also funneled to allies of Trump's children. Each month, the campaign spends millions on apparel like the "Make America Great Again" trucker hats. The manufacturer, Ace Specialties, is owned by Christl Mahfouz, a board member on Eric Trump's charitable foundation.

I wonder if Sarah Palin lays awake at night and thinks to herself "Running for President and using campaign donations to make my family rich instead of PAC contributions, why didn't I think of that?"

Around the internet folks have started to call this the Trump "scampaign" and I think that hits the nail right on the head.

This is just like Trump airlines, Trump University, and Trump steaks. All the Donald is doing is marketing his name in order to line his pockets with every intention of getting out before anybody gets a chance to examine the product closely.

And after this he will take his new notoriety and use it to launch that cable TV news show we keep hearing about, a reality show, or a new product line. Or perhaps all three.

While we are on the topic of this "scampaign" according to this article by the former Commissioner of the IRS Trump's supposed audit is NO reason not to release his tax returns:

He can and should immediately release the first two pages of his Form 1040, along with his Schedule A, for the past 20 years. This would tell us how much he makes, how much he pays in taxes, and how much he contributes to charity. 

Releasing this information would have no impact on any pending or future IRS audit of Trump. Zero. None. It is a risk-free first step with no downside. While painting a far from complete portrait, it would answer a few of the questions that Trump himself has raised during the campaign: He claims that he makes a lot of money; he claims that he makes significant charitable contributions; and he claims that he reduces his tax liability as far as current law allows. 

The first two pages of his enormous tax returns, along with his Schedule A, will shed important light on these claims. The first two pages plus the Schedule A of the Clintons' 2015 tax return tell us they made $10.6 million; that they made charitable contributions of $1.0 million; and that they paid federal taxes of $3.6 million, for an effective tax rate of 34 percent. We have that same information about the Clintons for the past 20 years. The first two pages of Trump's tax returns, together with his Schedule A, would provide us with the same information for him. He can and should share that information with no audit risk whatsoever. 

But Trump's not going to do that.

Because if he did we would know for a fact that he is full of shit and that all of this is indeed a "scampaign." 

This is why I don't really care about how the Right Wing attacks Clinton over her e-mails, the Clinton foundation, and her supposed "health problems."

First off those are all complete bullshit, but more importantly they don't matter.

Ultimately we really only have ONE candidate who can win this election, ONE candidate who is preparing to do the job, and ONE candidate who is even really running a campaign.

Donald Trump is putting on a show, and trying to grift as much money as possible while doing it.

He is NOT an actual Republican candidate.

And the GOP does not have the time or the machinery in position to replace him.

In other words, and I have said this before, everybody needs to start practicing the phrase "Madame President."

So the SarahPAC quarterly report came out, and it certainly appears that Palin's days as a grifter are coming to an end.

The highlights first.

The PAC started with the embarrassingly low amount of $267,574.69 as "cash on hand."

By the end of the quarter that had been reduced to $171,686.19

Total donations amounted to a piddly $149,246.57 and they spent a whopping $245,136.03.

Fiscally conservative my ass!

Consultants ran her about $113,000.

Postage/Mail was in $66,900 range.

Marilyn Lane and Carol Ryan each continued receiving $2,000 per month for "clerical."

Palin is also paying a Becky Tessier to be her "travel agent" at $500 a pop, yet the PAC's lawyer Tiemessen only received $340.00 this go around.

And only two candidates, Darryl Glenn and Paul Nehlen, received the usual $5,000 donation apiece to provide cover for the slush fund.

There were some other minor expenses for car rentals and airfare, but the vast majority of the money continues to go for consultants, which at this point is clearly a euphemism for something else, and postage which we have always known was a euphemism.

It is a money laundering operation pure and simple, and Palin will continue to use it to finance her lifestyle until it is bone dry.

And that day of dryness is clearly coming up fast.

Palin has been spending more than she is taking in for well over a year now, and seems to have only minimally reduced those expenditures.

At this rate she is probably only good for another two quarter or so and then there will be nothing but dust wafting through the halls of SarahPAC.

Hello everyone we are Levi and Sunny Johnston of Wasilla, Alaska. As we are sure many of you are aware we have been engaged in a long and rather protracted legal battle to retain custody of Levi's son Tripp. The good news is that it appears the custody situation is settled. The bad news is that we still owe many thousands of dollars in legal fees. 

 Unlike some we are not able to raise money through fundraising e-mails or SuperPACS and are instead asking for your help in paying these bills and allowing us to get back to the important job of raising our family. 

 Though feeling somewhat overwhelmed it had never occurred to us to ask for money using Go Fund Me, but after so many generous people reached out to us and offered their help we decided to swallow our pride and take them up on their extremely kind offers. 

 Anything that you can give would be much appreciated. And every dime will go toward attorney fees and the outstanding debts that we accrued during this long and very difficult legal battle.

Like I explained before, Levi and Sunny are very proud people, so this is not coming easy for them.

However I know that they are really struggling to pay the $1,700 child support payments, their attorney fees, their new mortgage, and to keep their children clothed and fed.

And as I mentioned earlier Bristol is simply not going to stop trying to nickel and dime Levi to death despite now having the custody situation resolved by the court.

I told Levi way back in the beginning that she would never stop trying to get him back in her life, break up his marriage, or at the very least shut him up for good.

Remember this is finally YOUR chance to do your part to stop the Palins from crushing yet another Alaskan family under their heel like they have done so many times before.

Make no mistake the custody situation is decided, so every filing that happens after the final papers were signed is all about making sure that Levi can never tell any truths that the Palins do not want told.

Period.

Now stand back, because the trolls they are a coming.

MSNBC host suggests to Bernie Sanders campaign manager that they are being dishonest to supporters by saying that he still has a shot at the nomination.

When (Thomas) Roberts pressed top aide Jeff Weaver about the campaign’s April fundraising reportedly being down by about 50 percent from strong showings in February and March, Weaver argued that Sanders being on the June 7 ballot in California would help down-ballot Democrats. 

The MSNBC anchor interrupted: “But, Jeff—when we look at the math, is it intellectually dishonest to tell these supporters that you can actually win when there are only a little over 1,000 delegates left? Bernie Sanders needs to win almost 100 percent of them. Hillary Clinton only needs to win 10 percent of them before the convention.” 

“I mean, there’s one thing to say you want to take it all the way to the end, but telling supporters that you can win is factually incorrect,” Roberts continued.

In response Weaver said that they could still win the nomination with, and get this, super delegates.

To be clear the Sander's campaign is now justifying the continued acceptance of campaign donations on the premise that the democratic system, which they have labeled "corrupt" due to the utilization of super delegates, will now salvage THEIR chances for winning by giving them the opportunity to utilize those self same super delegates.

In other words the argument Jeff Weaver is making is that the very folks Bernie Sanders has referred to as "the Establishment" or as "corrupt" are suddenly going to be convinced that HE is the future of the same party that he has been attacking for over a year now.

Just how strong is the weed these people are smoking?
