Another possible reason the CIA destroyed the torture tapes might be to cover up the fact that they tortured a mentally ill prisoner.

This is from the Washington Post's review of Ron Suskind's book "The One Persent Doctrine":

Abu Zubaydah, his captors discovered, turned out to be mentally ill and nothing like the pivotal figure they supposed him to be. CIA and FBI analysts, poring over a diary he kept for more than a decade, found entries "in the voice of three people: Hani 1, Hani 2, and Hani 3" -- a boy, a young man and a middle-aged alter ego. All three recorded in numbing detail "what people ate, or wore, or trifling things they said." Dan Coleman, then the FBI's top al-Qaeda analyst, told a senior bureau official, "This guy is insane, certifiable, split personality."

Abu Zubaydah also appeared to know nothing about terrorist operations; rather, he was al-Qaeda's go-to guy for minor logistics -- travel for wives and children and the like. That judgment was "echoed at the top of CIA and was, of course, briefed to the President and Vice President," Suskind writes. And yet somehow, in a speech delivered two weeks later, President Bush portrayed Abu Zubaydah as "one of the top operatives plotting and planning death and destruction on the United States." And over the months to come, under White House and Justice Department direction, the CIA would make him its first test subject for harsh interrogation techniques.

And it is Abu Zubaydah who is confirmed to be the subject of torture in at least one of the tapes that the CIA were instructed to destroy.

In an article published on Friday, the New York Times cites several unnamed current and former government officials in reporting that “at least two videotapes” were destroyed. The tapes showed the 2002 interrogation of two prisoners, one of whom was Abu Zubaydah, considered a top member of Al Qaeda. The other individual was not named.

Although the government has never officially acknowledged it, Zubaydah, captured by the CIA in March 2002, was subjected to water-boarding, a form of torture involving the near drowning and suffocation of the prisoner. One can only assume that the tapes depict water-boarding or worse forms of torture.

Why don't we torture? Because it makes us appear to be animals! Animals that are willing to torture a person of diminished capacity who could have been convinced to tell all that he knew simply by being kind to him.

But instead we showed the world what American justice is all about.

Is it any wonder they hate us?

(By the way I have to give a tip of my hat to AMERICAblog who brought this story to our attention.)

  2. There is an amazing Holy crap Interview in TPM Cafe by Larry Johnson....about CIA and Interrogations...you have to read it- it is unreal.....

and It is all about Gitmo and the Black Prisons....and detainees, and the Renditioning....summer of 2005 the English Detainees from Gitmo were returned to England, they immediately filed suit against the US, Rummy, and Bushco. ......There were Huge Problems of Evidence for their case that summer of 2005, an suit from a foriegn country- that if filed and if true- is War Crimes and Crimes against Humanity, and there were also UN Investigations.....besides the Criminal Case....In October Bush had conversations with Blair about this isue, and in NOVEMEBER he went to England and gave SPEECHS THAT THE US DOES NOT TORTURE......he lied....BIGTIME.....

Documented War Crime Evidence has been destroyed- WHO KNOWS HOW MANY have been totured and suffered I think it will be MANY....when the truth comes out...and it is oooozing out......

( When I contacted the UN, in early Sept 2005 about the Katrina Mess, I told them that I was a nurse that had worked with Red Cross, and done FEMA work, they asked my concerns about Katrina, and compared to previous work, so I blogged the hell out of it, and sent them copies of my blog- wich tracked Katrina hourly...and they other thing they ASKED FOR WAS TAPES- VIDEOTAPES.... I recieved two calls from Switzerland and England- doctors, within days of sending the materials- literally 48hours- the UN send Investigation teams to NOLA......)

My point is hmmmm, so there have been PEOPLE looking for Evidence ALL along.....TAPES....
