Rachel Maddow does an amazing job of describing the bizarre details of Sarah Palin's resignation and her attempts to clarify later.

If you have not seen this take a moment to watch it.

You cannot call yourself a serious student of Palin-tology without viewing this segment. And we all know how important that is to most of us.

I wonder if I can get a doctorate in Palin-tology?

USA Today is reporting that 7 out of 10 Republicans will vote for Sarah in 2012. CNN sings her praises as the new voice of the GOP, a Kingmaker! (or Queenmaker?) Who would have thunk it? Come on, where's that iceberg?

  2. I liked how Rachel focused on accountability in her piece. Palin's complaining that she shouldn't be held accountable by her constituents. Clearly, this is the best excuse Palin could come up with when she wrote her resignation speech.

Like Chris Hayes noted last night, Palin's speech only makes sense if there's a future accusation of something coming. An accusation of some sort that is clearly not known at this point.

I think the three weeks she gave is key. I mean, July 22 isn't far away.

I think that it is very, very important that we listen and really understand what it is that Mark McKinnon is saying.

He is right. Sarah is playing to certain segments of the populations that do feel they are without a voice and are being abused by our government and it isn't a small segment of the population. She is playing them like a fiddle and doing it well. Why else do you suppose she is so popular? She has people who are professing their love for her. Supporters who are willing to donate to her even if it means going without themselves. This is true dedication and belief in something. While we know she is incompetent, she is not without a very real power behind her because of who she is playing to.

It would be unwise to underestimate her and what she is capable of doing.

  5. Sarah Palin's July 3 claim that there have been "fifteen" ethics complaints, and she has won them "all" is simply incorrect. There are 19, she's "lost" one, two are pending, and nine others had real substance.

    Here's an analysis:

Sarah Palin and the Department of Law

Also includes nice pictures of Sophia Loren from back in the day.

    Thank you for your work.

  6. As I've said repeatedly, most politicians suffer form some sort of self aggrandizement or narcissistic tendency. McKinnon mirrored my belief and made the statement that perhaps 90% of our politicians are narcissistic. It is what makes a person put themselves out there and run for office and stand themselves up to criticism and/or adoration.

Politicians are a special breed and I think our Sarah has taken the "specialness" up a notch. But as Mckinnon reminds us, there are many that worship her and she will probably make a career of hanging out with that segment of our society.

I just sincerely hope that she will not run for any other position in Alaska. Fine, she can just go about and stump for others that share her beliefs. I hope I am correct in stating that the people that support her are definitely the minority in the country and Sarah will not have the power to push another Bush type person into office.

well, I really believe that unless there IS an iceberg, she still has her Teflon coat, where everything just glides off of her. I see that she is starting to gain momentum again after a momentary downturn...

I'm growing more and more frustrated by the day. It's wonderful to finally see the bigger media outlets finally paying attention to Sarah's actual behaviour and not buying into her word salad.

On the other hand, I find myself gritting my teeth as each reporter glosses over the actual 'misrepresentations' created by Sarah regarding the individual ethics violations complaints and their costs.

Why has no one from Washington or New York challenged her claims that her office has spent 'thousands of hours' and 'millions of dollars' of Alaskan money just to answer these 18 ethics violations complaints?

I also find myself strangely annoyed at the media's shortening of the term 'ethics violations complaints' to 'ethics complaints' because reaally it's Sarah's violation of certain governmental ethics that progressive Alaskans have bravely stepped forward to address, not debate the ethics themselves.

The USA Today article ALSO said that Democrats are 4:1 against her and Independents are 2:1 against her. 70% of 21% is not going to win a general election. Not to mention that first she has to survive the primaries, where Mike Huckabee, who has survived an opposition legislature and numerous ethics complaints of his own, appeals to the same fundamentalist core and can use the big target on her back and drive home the "when the going tough, Sarah quits" message.

We might not get the crash and burn that would take her out of politics completely just yet, but her message only appeals to a fringe base and drives away all moderates, independents and women and she will fail simply based on that math. We'll soon see the reality of that. She may be interested in campaigning for Repug candidates, but only those in the Southern regional stronghold, or those not worried about alienating moderates and independents, will ask for her help. For anyone outside of the conservative base it will be "thanks but no thanks".

  12. Those reporters who went up there to interview Sarah in her "costume" should be fired for not asking real questions.

So according to Sarah, here in my state of Virginia, every governor we elect is a LAME DUCK, since they are constitutionally limited to one term. What would happen if they all quit 2 1/2 years in like she did, because "things chnaged" for them, and they felt too much pressure. What a piece of work, and the MSM plays right into her hands.

She is a quitter! She aborted her term! She would not have quit if there wasn't a *iceberg*! She is trying to spin, spin, spin until "Thor's hammer" hits to keep the money flowing in.
Her whining about ethics complaints is laughable. She is not willing to be ethical so she quits! LOL! VF article hasn't come out in print yet either, so there are still people out there who haven't read it. If doesn't tell us students of "palintology" anything new but for people that don't follow these blogs it will be a eye opener! When the scandal(s) hit, her followers will have a complete meltdown. We saw some of this on Fri. She is now pandering to her base plying them with platitudes...so they will keep giving money.
Be patient...her time is running out.
I thought Rachel did a awesome job last night and loved the waders! KO also skewered her last night. She is a national joke.

  21. It is just amazing to me how so many find Sarah's popularity so surprising. It's correct that people that support her are a minority in this country but they are a loud and dangerous minority - racists, Christian extremists, the non-educated and the controlling group of politicians and horny rich men who want to use her as a vessel to spread their own agenda.

Sarah is DANGEROUS! She represents everything that is divisive in our country. I just look at her sometimes and think to myself. If this woman was not attractive, black and possibly any other race besides white and a man (I know Dubbya was dumb but he at least was given a degree from an Ivy League school and had a father who was once President.) she probably never would have even been elected Governor of Alaska and damn well wouldn't have had a run for the VPOTUS.

Let's face it. It is what it is and Sarah Palin is not going away anytime soon. It's more important than ever that we keep calling her out on her lies and exposing her for the hypocrite she is. We have got to keep picking away at her popularity by exposing her true character.

Anon, re: McKinnon: Just what do these people WANT? The ones that just LOVE Palin. They want the BLACK guy out of the WHITE HOUSE? Gays in jail or stoned? Just what does she offer them? She will NOT bring them healthcare or money for a better education.

Just exactly WHAT would she do for them?

  23. She is going to slide right by AGAIN. I plead with those who "know" there is something coming along that can bring her down to get it out there. She has 3 weeks to do more damage. If so many people know there is an Iceberg coming, then why keep it such a secret. Let us all know and maybe the "power of numbers" can help. I have a dear friend and a granddaughter who have both joined PRAYER WARRIERS FOR SARAH PALIN since last Friday. Don't assume that whomever holds the key to this "secret" will be able to pull it off...we need more damage control out there

  24. O.K. This is a long post but worth reading. Maureen Dowd did a really funny post called "Sarah's Secret Diary".

    It's right here:

    http://community.nytimes.com/comments/www.nytimes.com/2009/07/08/opinion/08dowd.html

The post is funny but read a comment made by Eva from California. She said:

"Maureen, I would be so grateful if you would use your extraordinary talent and insight to actually interview some of the many women who are fans of Sarah Palin.

(For the record, I am not among her fans.)

But I fear that we are only deepening the divide by mocking her... all the while failing to address the issues faced by the people who actually find meaning in Sarah Palin.

Their issues are quite different from ours. Their educational level is different. Their incomes are different.

Sarah Palin was not just a phenomenon because she is attractive or a has a certain rubbernecking train-wreck appeal.

Sarah Palin was in large part a phenomenon that arose because of the split nature of this country - we whom they call "elites" (about one-third of Americans actually have a college degree, as I understand it) - and the people who feel shunned by said elites and want someone like themselves to have a say in government. (Thusly, George Bush.)

The more we trash Palin instead of respectfully engaging and communicating with her fan base, the more power we give her."

I found this comment interesting because I think Eva has a point. The more we trash Palin about the way she talks or the way she dresses or her and Todd's level of education we empower her fan base to possibly recruit others that just may feel sorry for an attractive female/mother being picked on. What I just really don't get is why so many of these people tend to give her a pass for the lies that she continues to tell. This is why I think exposing the lies associated with Babygate may not help the blind to see but will definitely open the eyes of those that can see but chooses to close their eyes on Sarah's lies.

People, people, people. Palin is a loser, a loser for the repubs., and a loser for social conservatives.

These are the very reasons why we want her leading the repub. party. We want her in the media, and we want the fools blowing their money on her.

She lost the election against an African American named Barack Hussein, a muslim (irony). She lost the support of her state. She split the repubs., the conservatives, and the right-wing christians.

Yes, she's scarier then Bush, but you got to have a little faith that more than half the country is not absolutely loony tunes.

Yes, she drives normal people crazy, but she is the gift that keeps on giving. I need her, you need her, but, think of Dave Letterman, he really wants her bad.

  27. The comment by Eve that NakedTruth kindly posted pretty much says it all. As long as bloggers, media, radio personalities, Democratic party officials, et al. throw trash and mockery at Palin, the more people like me, are going to give her every benefit of the doubt. Let me provide a trivial example: One blogger -- you know who you are -- *frequently* yammers on about Palin wearing a mini skirt at this or that function and how disrespectful it is. Cripes, lady. A skirt that touchs the top of the knee is NOT a mini skirt. If I can't believe YOUR judgment/statement/opinion about that, why should I believe ANYTHING else you say? Quit spreading - or creating - rumors.

    Phoebe, et al:

That's actually not true, according to polls. But my question to you is why would you support a secessionist, just out of an emotional reaction to not liking the way you feel someone is criticized? Wow. That's a really scary way to vote.

This is how we got Bush in office.

People like you voted with your gut. Everyone wanted to have a beer with the guy. NO one cared if he was right for our country.

Palin is not right for our country, and anyone who would vote for a racist divider who has close ties to the secessionist/kkk party is really not anyone who values the American spirit.

It's scary to think that you would vote for someone because you pity them, rather than looking at their record.

As much as you project onto Palin that she is like you, and you are like her, you are wrong. She is the elite in Wasilla and Alaska. She represents the concerns of the elite oil companies and Wall st, just as Bush did. They've wrapped her in a package, and you're falling for it again.

That says a lot about their values and it's rather sad for you -- but if you didn't learn from Bush then I'm venturing you will always vote for the R who is "just like you", only has oodles of money and no scruples.

Sadly, people who vote for her because of her "values" are probably often people who would give you the shirt off their back. Hard working people who don't realize who she really is.

There's no way those folks are ever going to vote Dem or liberal -- they've been taught to hate us.

It doesn't matter how hard you try to see their point of view -- believe me, I've tried.

They're full of hate and racism and faux Christianity. I'm not going to cater to those folks by not criticiziing any politician who lies as much as Palin does. If they want to support a liar, that's their business.

    Sorry.

Phoebe, did you see the photo of how high that skirt went when she sat down? I always check that and she was on a stage, with people looking up her skirt. She does not dress like a professional.

Women like me can't stand her because she uses her looks to get ahead, and I thought we fought to be taken seriously. and I hate Liars for Jesus more than just about any other kind of politician.

I could go on how she offends me as a woman and as REAL American, though I live in heathen unpatriotic NYC, I am offended as well.

I am sorry, but how can these people feel they are being abused by our government! What is wrong with them?I don't think they have a clue what the Republicans would do with our country if given a chance. Haven't they learned that yet. Those older people who are on social security and medicare would probably end up with no monthly income or health insurance if the Republicans had their way. They lie about that to them because they treat their constituents as if they are a bit dense (which many are!).
Why can't they see that just six months ago, banks were closing left and right every day and the global economy was shutting down completely. OF course it is not fixed yet, but certainly the Obama administration has stabilized it. I don't understand the people who are moderate to lower income who would ever support the Republican party. They don't care about them at all.

And either does Sarah Palin. She is not an every day mom hockey mom. She just isn't. It is an image. Her family makes five times the average income and they live in HUGE house on a lake and a boat. She always has gotten a taste of the good life. Sarah would ruin all of Alaskas gorgeous wildlife and the environment if it meant more money and more industry (more money in her pocket).

Yet they have a President who really does care about the every day person, and they don't even see that. How did this segment of the population become so ignorant.

I agree with Phoebe believe it or not that many against Sarah Palin focus on the wrong things. Stop talking about her looks and focus on her extreme fringe right policies that would be devestating for this nation. Focusing on her outright lies is fair game to me and on her inability to articulate or be focused. These statements can be backed up by video. If her supporters think she is articulate then, well, I don't know how they could think that -it is pretty sad to me-and they can call me elite all they want, but I don't want someone who destroys the English language and is completely ignorant about other cultures to represent our great country.

  31. Lisabeth,

Loved your comments. That's why I posted that comment made by Eva to start this dialog and bring out people like Phoebe.

People like Phoebe are not 'blind'. They see Sarah's lies, hypocrisy and corruption but they choose to shut their eyes because they allow their ignorance, racism, extremist beliefs and hatred of others to keep them from opening their eyes. We will never be able to heal the 'blind'. Only a higher power can do that. But we can focus on the truth about Sarah's hypocrisy and lies. This, I think, is what will open some eyes to her deceptive ways.

The naked truth is always chasing a well-dressed lie.

  33. Anon @ 8:21 said:"Women like me can't stand her because she uses her looks to get ahead,...."

That's it, it's Palin's looks that women here find most offensive. Not that she uses her looks to get ahead but that she has the good looks. You've spilt the beans on the girls anon.

Palin can't help how she looks anon, and to wear a short skirt which is not too short to be stylish, is not something to be critical of.

You Americans are still not getting it. The reason why she is dangerous is because she's not very bright and her priorities are outrageously ultra rightwing-nut. And because you're not getting it I fear that you are going to get what you deserve. Palin as a VP choice of a very popular repub candidate in 2012.

Casey- Ain't it just true though? I know you don't like to criticize them but this is what drives these girls isn't it.

    Go team Canada!

  34. To Anonymous@ 8:12 Huh? My words were "give her the benefit of the doubt," not "support" nor did I say I'd vote for her because of *pity* nor do you know who I actually DID vote for in 2008. I will give her the benefit of the doubt and not base my decisions on snark about shoes and skirts and personal appearance.

to Anonymous@ 8:21 I saw that her skirt didn't ride up as high sitting down as Judge Sonia Sotomayor's did in an official (?) press release photo. Nor as high as Michelle Obama's skirt did when she was on Jay Leno.
You also said "Women like me can't stand her because she uses her looks to get ahead." That I don't know how to respond to because I can't figure out why so many people think her looks are so outstanding that she has an unfair advantage in life because of them. Nicolle Wallace's stylist tarted Palin up a bit during the campaign but any other photos I've seen (i.e. before August 2008 or after November 2008) she looks average, almost frumpy. So 25 years ago she won a Miss Wasilla pageant. Big deal. That might have helped her get the job as sports reporter, but her other jobs? Councilwoman, fisherman, governor? How did she use her looks to get those jobs? I can't bring myself to hate someone who got a better deal in genetics than I did.

  35. Naked Truth, You make quite an assumption that I'm ignorant, racist, extremist and full of hate for others. What have I written here, or anywhere else for that matter, that makes you think that? Was is when I wrote "people like me" are going to give her benefit of the doubt?" You don't know me or what I'm like except that I don't care for bloggers throwing trash or mockery [instead of facts or reason]. I give a lot of people the benefit of the doubt. 36. lisabeth12:05 PM

I don't find her looks offensive one bit. Sorry. And I am not jealous of Sarah Palin in any way.
I hate her policies and what she stands for. I don't like this "dumbing now" "folksy" approach she uses to try to reach certain people. It is pure crap and just an act.
The main reasons I do not approve of Sarah Palin one bit and think she is dangers are:
    1) she is very very extreme in her viewpoints and philosophies; examples not even believing in abortion in the case of rape or incest or if the mother is going to die.
    2) she is a liar. This can be proven. She has a serious problem with lying and distorting the truth.
    3) she does not practice what she preaches. she is not a fiscal conservative, and she has taken more earmark money than many other states. in addition, Alaska is run like socialist state yet she is always complaining about socialism
    4) she clearly does not VALUE GOOD EDUCATION-this is shown by the policies she has implented and her own family. In my family, it was expected that you go to college. I am pure middle class and Sarah does not speak for anything that I believe in. I think education is one of the most important things a country can do for its people. The Republicans almost put down education as if it is a bad thing.
    5) She is inarticulate. An inarticulate person could never communicate well with congress or with other countries.
    6) She is narrow minded-she has not traveled around the world, she doesn't appreciate various cultures and religions as evidenced by her recent treatment of the Alaskan natives. That is just one example.
    7. She doesn't have intellecutal curiosity. That does not mean she doesn't have street smarts or some political savvy, but she is not a great thinker. She does not think about world issues. This is very important for a leader of the one of the largest countries in the world.
    8. Her constant use of the same "sound bites" over and over again illustrate that she doesn't really understand the complexity of various issues so she stay away from them. If I hear the words "energy independence, small government and individual freedoms" from her one more time I am going to barf. To her energy independence is getting oil from Alaska, not from the middle east countries. She doesn't care about alternative energies or green companies! She doesn't really believe in individual freedoms either or she would be pro choice and for equal rights for gay and lesbian citizens. SHE IS A HYPOCRITE, plain and simple, She repeats the same sound bites over and over again to a crowd that does not demand more from her. The crowd is who we should fear because they are uneducated and ignorant.
    9. Her DISPOSITION is not what is needed to be a great leader. She is too reactive and overly sensitive. So am I and that is why I KNOW in my heart that I could never be in politics no matter how much I might want to make a difference. She is not well suited for politics period even if she has passionate beliefs. If she were an insightful person, she would realize this and try to accept it about herself. She lets her ambition and the idea of money and power lead her but they are incongruent with her basic disposition. She is too thin skinned. Imagine how she would react in crises with North Korea and other countries. Having a strong defense and saying thank you to the troops is NOT ENOUGH.
    10) mental stability - she does not come across as someone who is insightful into her own strengths and weakenesses. I am not a psychologist so I can't say she has NPD but she certainly exhibits features of that disorder. Her sudden quitting of her job is an example of instability no matter what she says

I could go on and on and on. I don't like how she winks either, but I could care less about her looks. I think we should focus on the facts of her performance. She did not accomplish what her goals as governor. She was NOT a good governor.
Anyhow, for my own sake, I decided to write this out. I have had enough of Sarah Palin, I am sick to death of her and her being in the media.
