Here is the report from Friends of Democracy Corps and Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research that attempted to determine why the GOP base hates Obama.

The self-identifying conservative Republicans who make up the base of the Republican Party stand a world apart from the rest of America, according to focus groups conducted by DemocracyCorps. These base Republican voters dislike Barack Obama to be sure – which is not very surprising as base Democrats had few positive things to say about George Bush – but these voters identify themselves as part of a ‘mocked’ minority with a set of shared beliefs and knowledge, and commitment to oppose Obama that sets them apart from the majority in the country. They believe Obama is ruthlessly advancing a ‘secret agenda’ to bankrupt the United States and dramatically expand government control to an extent nothing short of socialism. While these voters are disdainful of a Republican Party they view to have failed in its mission, they overwhelmingly view a successful Obama presidency as the destruction of this country’s founding principles and are committed to seeing the president fail.

"Committed to seeing the President fail", I am sorry but that statement alone sets these "teabaggers" apart from any Democratic frustration at George W. Bush of which I am aware. We well knew that when the President fails, the country fails.

First and foremost, these conservative Republican voters believe Obama is deliberately and ruthlessly advancing a ‘secret agenda’ to bankrupt our country and dramatically expand government control over all aspects of our daily lives. They view this effort in sweeping terms, and cast a successful Obama presidency as the destruction of the United States as it was conceived by our founders and developed over the past 200 years.

In other words he is not going to stick to our revered history of oppressing the minorities and furthering the interests of big business (ie WHITE business), as was done by almost every President before him.

This concern combines with a profound sense of collective identity. In our conversations, it was striking how these voters constantly characterized themselves as part of a group of individuals who share a set of beliefs, a unique knowledge, and a commitment of opposition to Obama that sets them apart from the majority of the country. They readily identify themselves as a minority in this country – a minority whose values are mocked and attacked by a liberal media and class of elites. They also believe they possess a level of knowledge and understanding when it comes to politics and current events, one gained from a rejection of the mainstream media and an embrace of conservative media and pundits such as Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh, which sets them apart even more. Further, they believe this position leaves them with a responsibility to spread the word, to educate those who do not share their insights, and to take back the country that they love. (Did you catch the evangelical slant in their way of thinking?)Their faith in this country and its ideals leave them confident that their numbers will grow, and that they will ultimately defeat Barack Obama and the shadowy forces driving his hidden agenda.

This last paragraph is very important. It illustrates the kind of mindset that one might find in the citizens of a country which is being occupied by hostile forces, such as France during World War 2. In those circumstances a kind of fervent nationalism bonds the countrymen together and they become desperate to expunge the invaders from their country.

But in this instance these people are responding, not to an invader, but a duly elected President who they fundamentally disagree with. How did THAT evolve into the kind of persecuted desperation that we see today? The answer of course is simple.

Fox News.

The cable news channel has done everything in its power to make its viewers feel marginalized and oppressed. Have you noticed how many of their programs and books have the word "America" in their titles? The Fox program "Sean Hannity's America". Glenn Beck's book "The Real America: Messages From The Heart and Heartland". Bill O'Reilly's transparent attempt to rape our children's minds with his book " Kids Are Americans Too". (Of course they are, who in the hell would suggest otherwise?)

And in the background there is always a flag waving and the implied message that THIS is the REAL America. And that every other news outlet is against THEIR America.

The result of that intense indoctrination is reflected in this next portion of the report.

Their feelings toward Obama are not simply a reflection of intense partisan differences. They are actively rooting for Obama to fail as president because they believe he is not acting in good faith as the leader of our country. Only 6 percent of these conservative Republican base voters say that Obama is on their side, and our groups showed that they explicitly believe he is purposely and ruthlessly executing a hidden agenda to weaken and ultimately destroy the foundations of our country.

These conservative Republican base voters were not just shooting off half-cocked theories about conspiracies. They actively believe President Obama is purposely lying about his plans for the country and what his policies would do, and that he is exaggerating the threats America faces in order to create support for his policies. A key component to this deception is a pattern of always telling people what they want to hear, regardless of the truth.

The part that really struck me about these two paragraphs is that they almost perfectly reflect the kind of paranoia that I felt about George W. Bush during his second term.

I also felt that there was a hidden agenda and that his stated reasons for doing things were not truthful. Of course in that case we had the evidence behind the Valerie Plame case, the Downing Street Memo's, the lack of WMD's in Iraq, and the fact that the administration engaged in Domestic Spying. It is almost like the teabaggers have taken our very legitimate fears of an out of control administration circa 2001 to 2008, and applied them, without alteration, to the brand new Obama administration.

That is OUR fear and outrage. NOTHING President Obama has done comes anywhere close to the kinds of criminal and treasonous behavior we saw in President Bush and his administration, and yet these people are angered enough to take to the streets repeatedly in protest. WTF?

Just listen to THIS description of President Obama.

Conservative Republicans do not oppose Obama’s policies simply because they think they are misguided or out of partisan fervor. Rather, they believe his policies are purposely designed to fail. When they look at the totality of his agenda, they see a deliberate effort to drive our country so deep into debt, to make the majority of Americans so dependent on the government, and to strip away so many basic constitutional rights that we are too weak to fight back and have to accept whatever solution he proposes. The numbers from our database also demonstrate this belief – 92 percent of these voters believe Obama is a “big spender” and only 17 percent believe he has good plans for the economy.

WHO are they describing again? It is almost like they saw all of this happening for the last eight years but could not bring themselves to blame it on THEIR guy. So they held their tongues for all of that time waiting for a Democrat to take office so that they could finally exhale and start bitching about the state of their country. The fact that it was a black guy is just frosting on their hypocritical hate-filled cupcake.

I disagree with the fundamental findings of this study which goes out of it's way to say that this fear and suspicion is not racially motivated. Wrong!

Just because these yahoo's do not want to go on record as being racists, certainly does not mean that it is not the driving force behind their anger. In their eyes they went from running the country, to being left out of the running of the country. From being in power, to being out of power. To being the majority, to becoming the NEW minority.

Yes, they see themselves as the minority. The oppressed. The downtrodden. And WHO suddenly made the white men, the founder's of this country, the master's of this nation, into second class citizens? A black man!

And you believe that racism is not the fuel that lights a fire under these whackjobs? Then you my friends are fooling yourselves.

I understand that the people behind this study do NOT want to identify the Republican base as racists. That may put an end to the ability to engage with this group of citizens in the future. Name calling can definitely be a conversation killer.

But here is the thing. Crazy people are also very offended if you refer to them as crazy. However just because you do not label them crazy, it does not make them any more sane. And not calling racists, "racist", will also not make them suddenly want to celebrate Kwanzaa and buy a bunch of Kanye West records. And if the Democrats believe that not referring to these hoodless KKK members as racist will make one bit of difference to them, then perhaps it is the Democratic party who is really crazy.

  2. If they weren't damnfools, they wouldn't be mocked. The fact that they believe themselves separate, set apart, gifted with special knowledge, means they're paranoid. And we do want to "get" them- with education, with knowledge, with judgment.

I suppose identifying the problem is the first step to solving it. Otherwise I don't see where we're much forwarder.

As far as Obama goes, and I do support him, I think he's so invested in being the nonthreatening Black Man that he's not going to achieve as much as he should. And I don't think that'll achieve much in race relations. There is nothing he can do that will make them not hate him; there is nothing he can do that will make Republicans cooperate. He should be pitching to Dems and progressives and independents that we can move ahead on our own- we're strong enough.

My son's first grade teacher told me she taught to the top third. The middle third, she said, got it after a bit. And you just drag the bottom third along. That's what we need to do. Although I admit "bottom third" is unfortunate language choice.

Classic "projection". Their bunch ran our country into the ground, and instead of taking responsibility, they point the finger at others and make a lot of wild accusations.

I think the GOP is haveing a kind of a mental breakdown, because having been in power the last eight years, not one of their plans has been anything but a disaster, and they can't bear to take a look in the mirror and ask why that is.

  6. Since most of the people interviewed were southerners, and I've lived my entire life in the South while being African American, I can say, due to experience, that much of the opposition to President Obama is based on racism. In my city every time an article is written about the president, his family, or his policies, there are more racist comments than there are comments that defend him. The kids in a city nearby celebrated National Hispanic Month on Friday. The article reporting on the event was published in today's online version of the paper. The comments were awful. 99% of the comments were negative, and any sane person could not miss the racism expressed in them. Erick Erickson is on the city council where I live, and most people here have the same attitude and say/believe the same things about President Obama that he does. That should tell you all you need to know about whether most southern white opposition to the president is based on racism or not.

Does anyone else find it strange that although the Birthers are constantly making fraudelent charges against the validity of President Obama's citizenship, very few people have challenged the validity of Rupert Murdoch's store-bought US citizenship? Isn't this odd?

Hell, even Wikipedia states (without any challenges) that " On September 4, 1985, Murdoch became a naturalized citizen in order to satisfy the legal requirement that only US citizens were permitted to own American television stations."

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rupert_Murdoch

Compare the relationship of the Republicangelicals 20% Club to FOX News in the USA to the profiles of his news companies in other parts of the world -- it is obvious that Rupert is looking to score World Dominance for the conservatives of the world.

for 25 years we have been under psychological, econnomic, and political attack by an Australian fascist. Murdoch's unprecedented global jingoism has whipped a large portion of the conservative American public up into a frenzy that could easily spill over into violence and acts of treason.

Murdoch should be charged with sedition, and his News Corporation dismantled.

I looked up Becks "The Real America" and see that it was published before her rants about "real America" on the campaign trail. One more clue as to the sort of reading material she was afraid to tell Katie Couric about? Maybe she only reads the title.

Anyway, there must be a place at the intersection of Glenn Beck's "White Culture" and Sarah Palin's "Real America" where those people described in the study would be comfortable; a place right out of the "Twilight Zone." If she ever gets elected, it will be the beginning of this great country's twilight era; it will be "Night In America."

Whether you call them racists, which they, are or seditionists, which most of them well could be, they are a real threat to our President and our country. Please read the article on Nalinpalinnow about the Christian Taliban and their all out effort to get Frank Schaeffer, author of "Crazy for God". While most of the right's claims are nothing but paranoia there still remain some of it that is not. Below is a quote from the report:

"They believe Obama is ruthlessly advancing a ‘secret agenda’ to bankrupt the United States and dramatically expand government control to an extent nothing short of socialism."

Deliberately bankrupting the US is of course nothing but paranoia but the mention of socialism is not. So I'll explain from a Canadian's POV. We Canadians don't see ourselves as socialists but unfortunately many Americans do. We see ourselves as promoting a capitalist system which needs to be capable of understanding it's social responsibilities toward the people. Yet in a way Americans are right about Canada because we differ in our fundamental beliefs. Not in a small part but in a very significant part. The word 'socialism' is still a somewhat dirty word in Canada and we would never accept being placed under that description. Many Americans now, and most in the not so distant past would gladly label us as socialists.

My point is: Make no mistake Americans, you are going to have to become somewhat socialist yourselves in order to bring about the change you need. And so in that respect the political right in America is at least somewhat correct. It is a simple fact that your brand of crass and irresponsible capitalism is failing you and will fail you completely in this modern competitive world.

And so when above, the right claims that Obama is attempting to change America from what is has been for over 200 years, they are again at least partially right. This is not the sort of change to be fearful of, but rather the sort of change which is inevitable and so desperately needed for a prospering and successful future for the huge majority of ordinary people who make up your citizenry.

The political right is very afraid and the reason why they are afraid is because it's no secret that they are on the verge of having to share some of the enormous wealth your wonderful country has to offer it's people.

I've mentioned before and I will mention again a great prophetic book, 'A Declaration of Interdependence', by Will Hutton. Absolutely mandatory reading for anyone who wants to be able to understand what is happening in America today. Will Hutton told about it all at least 5 years before it happened. Get it Gryphen and anyone else who wants to completely understand the political scene in the US today.

    Luv from Canada!

These people are so sickening (being polite. - President Obama won't be able to get the whole country back on track in just four or eight years, but his election and the internet has brought all the sedition personalities to light. They have always been around, right? Now we can see them better. It may be a good thing to get all this out in the open. President Obama isn't perfect and we won't always agree with him or Congress. I am still happy that he is president rather than McCain. Obama is what our country and world needs right now. I am thankful everyday for all who helped him get elected... Blessings to Everyone :-)

mlaiuppa, Don't hang your hat of the racism thing too much, it's not the primary problem the right is having with Obama. No doubt there is a lot of racism alive and well in your country but it's not the big factor. The big factor is the threat of social change and the fact that it is going to deprive some on the right of their proclaimed 'right' to earn something like 90+% of the wealth in their top 1 or 2%. As I have attempted to explain more completely in my above post.

Great post. This is the first time they have been defined. Who is behind these crazy paranoids? Murdoch, Rush & Beck. I would think Rush & Beck are more like puppets. Clearly the "brains" behind the mind control of these nitwits needs to be defined. Obama is in an awkward situation, if he says this movement in fueled by racism , being black, he opens up a whole can of worms & the rest of his presidency the "race issue" will be "the" issue. It seems like such a cynical control of racists & who gains certainly not them. I do wonder just how many "birthers" there are. What % of the repub party they make up.

Well, for what it's worth, I went on line to check this out--I saw 27, 33, 37 and 39 as the number of social security numbers he has, but didn't see 43. You have apparently done some intense research and have come up with four more. I also saw claims about different addresses, but no further information was provided.

So, if you want me (us) to believe you, or to even take you seriously, you should take the time to provide that information to us: List each and every number and the state where he proportedly lived when issued. Then, list every single one of those "143" addresses.

Opposition towards President Obama is complex. Being a native Southerner, I would definitely agree there are racists against President Obama; but that's not the entire picture. The brainwashing by the Faux News Network plays a very important role, too. I read that the owner of that network built a home in China a couple of years ago; his wife is a Chinese communist. And then you have those fundamental extremists who want to take over as if they are the only true Christians. Like peeling an onion.
