The mother of Christina Taylor Green: "I didn't know what had happened, but I knew it was bad."

I will warn you ahead of time that this story about the death of little Christina, and how her mother and family dealt with it, is heart wrenching.

However I feel it is an important story for people to read, especially for those who have a hard time understanding the devastating effect that easy access to handguns and assault weapons have on our citizens.

From AZ Central:

To the gunman, they probably looked about the same size - Hileman, tiny at not quite 5 feet, and Christina-Taylor, the tallest kid in third grade. Maybe he didn't know he was shooting a child. It doesn't matter. He did.

Hileman was hit three times trying to shield her young charge. Christina-Taylor was shot once. The two fell to the pavement next to each other, bleeding. Hileman looked into the little girl's eyes and, in her best mom voice, admonished, "Don't you leave me, Christina-Taylor Green. Don't you die on me."

But the 9-year-old was one of six people killed that day. Their names are written on six white wooden crosses that stand in memorial across Ina Road from the Safeway. Christina-Taylor's name is on the fifth one. Thirteen other people, including Hileman and Giffords, were shot and lived.

A surgeon entered then, trailed by three nurses. He was crying, and so were the nurses, and then Green knew for sure. The surgeon sat next to her and said, "We tried the best we could." His voice caught, and he choked out: "We tried the best we could. Your daughter passed away."

Green pinched her arm again and again. It still hurt. But this wasn't real. It couldn't be real.

"This is the worst dream ever," she thought.

And yet, ever the mother, ever the nurse, Green thanked the surgeon, repeating his words: "I know you tried your best. It's OK. Thank you."

She looked into the face of her son sitting beside her, his eyes searching her face.

"Can we see Christina now?" Dallas asked. He had heard the police officer, and the surgeon, but maybe he needed to hear the words from his mother for them to be true.

"Christina is in heaven, Dallas," Green told him, and then she cried, holding her tearful son.

Every death caused by a handgun in this country seems senseless, but this one, at least for me, just seemed especially unnecessary.  And especially painful.

However if the anger we feel over such a senseless act of violence translated into citizens demanding that lawmakers create laws making access to handguns significantly more difficult for those people who simply should NEVER have access to a weapon whose sole purpose is the ending of a human life, then perhaps little Christina's death would serve some higher purpose.

By the way speaking of senseless acts perpetrated on the citizens of this country, and I am not saying the two are directly related, today is the third anniversary of John McCain's announcement that he chose Sarah Palin as his running mate.

One cannot help but wonder how much better the country would be right now if he had NOT allowed himself to be bullied into making such a regrettable choice.

Hate to disagree with you but in this case I a glad he made this decision. Otherwise he would have had a better chance and we could have ended with President CriptKeeper.

    hi Gryphen

I could not agree more. As a gun owner myself, I am all for making gun purchases much more than a simple background check.

I know the US has a gun culture, especially in the western states, but there has to be something done to prevent senseless and tragic crimes like the one in Arizona.

NO ONE except law enforcement and military needs more than a 10 round clip.

I support a registration process with local police for anyone wanting a gun, and even ammo, not just handguns.

Let us lay accountability at the feet of those who pressured or persuaded McCain. They underestimated their voters and misjudged the facade of Palin. The second mistake was not doing the right thing to replace her when it became obvious she was ignorant and not tethered to reality.

There are many landmarks in the political history of the US but the selection of the ignorant, immoral, skank by a major political party as a vice presidential candidate is near the top of the list.

This reminds me to count my blessings, all the little things as well as the big, and to remember those with reverence whose lives changed in an instant, never to be the same again. This could have happened to any one of us or our dear children.

My thoughts and prayers are with this family and every family who has lost a loved one in a senseless gun shooting. So many people gone because they were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time caught in the crossfire.

Cherish each moment today because tomorrow you or I could wake up the next morning faced with the horrible realization everything has changed never to be the same again. We must stand up for all that is right and good in the world and stand up against what is not and threatens the well being of all who we love.

A touching message. I agree, we would have been better off without that hasty decision of putting Palin on the ticket. I didn't like her when I first saw her and have even greater dislike for her now.
She has done absolutely nothing good for this country, its obvious that what she does is for personal reasons. My hope is that she will fade away fast. I've had enough of her and her dysfunctional family.

So sad, I was just thinking about Little Christina and how Sarah's life has continued like nothing ever happened in Tucson. Sarah is still working her scams, getting rich and spewing her hate.

People kept warning Sarah Palin that somebody is going to get hurt or killed but dense Sarah kept using her cross hairs and telling people to reload and kept on doing this until people were targeted for assassination, were murdered or injured.

Gryphen, thank you for this post on Christina Green and her family. I, for one, never see or think about Sarah Palin, without thinking of that little girl and the lasting pain that family will suffer forever.

I lived in a RED states for most of my life. I've sat in PTA meetings in a small, safe town where half the women there were legally (or illegally) "packing". At age 5, I was in a grocery store in a tiny to (1948) town when a gunman opened fire aiming at
his brother but a stray bullet hit a 6 year old girl in the stomach.
Fortunately she lived. Another stray bullet hit a mayo display close enough to me that I was splattered with mayo.

Gun control is a serious issue. That Palin so casually used cross-hairs will never be forgotten. Not by me.

It's never been released that Loughner had ever seen Palin's "surveyor's symbols" but figure it out: he was obsessed with Gabby Giffords; the video showing Giffords speaking out about Palin's cross-hairs map was played over and over; Loughner bought
the gun right after the November
election. Granted, he was mentally ill but then a whole bunch of Sarah's faithful followers are nuts.

When Palin did her "blood libel" pity poor little Sarah speech, it was all about her. She never even said the victims' names. I hear some bloggers, authors and "pundints" say they don't
understand people hating Palin. I've never hated anyone and not saying I hate her but this issue alone is enough to get me very close to the line.

The NRA talking point of "Guns don't kill, people kill" is true: put a gun in the hand of madman and people get killed. People like Christina Green.

And these sons of bitches STILL ran her!

    -------------

...Today the authors reveal that the failures affected Mrs Palin's nerves. "Palin flew to Philadelphia to spend the next week concentrating on debate prep. The next two days were a total train wreck. Never before had Palin's team seen her so profoundly out of sorts for such a sustained period. She wasn't eating (a few small bites of steak a day, no more). She wasn't drinking (maybe half a can of Dr Pepper; no water, ever). She wasn't sleeping (not much more than a couple of hours a night, max).

"The index cards were piling up by the hundreds, but Palin wasn't absorbing the material written on them. When her aides tried to quiz her, she would routinely shut down – chin on her chest, arms folded, eyes cast to the floor, speechless and motionless, lost in what those around her described as a kind of catatonic stupor."

Asked if the preparations weren't worth it for the prospect of power, Mrs Palin is said to have replied darkly: "No. If I'd known everything I know now, I would not have done this."

One of her advisers sent an urgent SOS to McCain headquarters, the authors continue. "They began discussing a new and threatening possibility: that Palin was mentally unstable."

She cheered up when she was plucked out of the fetid hotel room - "full of half-eaten hotel food and stinking of mouldering french fries" - where the failed cramming session had taken place, and taken to the more comfortable surroundings of Mr McCain's ranch, with a doctor on hand, the authors relate. But Mrs Palin continued to alarm campaign managers with her howlers as she prepared for her head-to-head debate with Joe Biden, the Democrat vice-presidential candidate.

I still feel the Green's pain and my heart aches for them.
When I worked in aa ER, a Trauma center ER, and a NICU the hardest thing was to deal with one of the little ones not making it. And yes, it is even hard on the medical staff.
There are no answers to give the parents, there are no words to even comfort this type of loss.
And yet this precious little girl was not felled by an illness or an accident. But by a crazed gunman who set out deliberately to kill.

The neighbor who thought she was taking Christina for an educational and fun afternoon outing, will newer forget.
Nor her parents for allowing her to go.
The guilt is not their's , but they will live with a lifetime of "what if's".
And I truly believe that the racheted up political spew okaying violence is what stuck in this mentally ill man's head and THAT is why Christina and others perished and why others will deal with their wounds forever.

  27. Good to remember all the Tucson victims, especially because Sept. 11th will be the anniversary of that monstrous attack, but it also would have been Christina's 10th birthday.

Agree with Gryph and others that McCain unleashed Palin onto national political landscape, enabling political spin doctors to embrace marketing lies without remorse or fear.

Also agree with @AJBillings 6:48 am. Palin and her ilk have taken reasonable discussion out of gun control (e.g., limit automatic weapons and clips that fire an ungodly number of rounds). Cheney supported limiting ammo; look where we are now. (I've said before I don't support gun control because I don't want to live in a police state.)

This is so sad. It brings back that January day. We forget about it quickly, but the parents of Christina have to deal with this for the rest of their lives.

And to think that BP whine about how HARD her life is as a single mom, calling her child's father a gnat. How callous that is, considering how unrepentant her mother was about using figurative gunsights on maps of her political competition. No, her mother was not responsible for the crazy gunman's actions, but after the incident, instead of staying out of public eye and allowing people to heal, the Palins go full throttle and Bristol must show her pride and joy on her reality series.

Here’s a serious question: is Bristol Palin guilty of child abuse?

I’m no expert in California law regarding child abuse.

But I am a father and grandfather, and I know how these photos and story from Daily Mail make me feel: angry.

You don’t have to be a parent to be sickened by child abuse.
We all started out as helpless children.

What right does Bristol Palin have to mistreat her two year-old son by plopping him in front of reality TV cameras in Los Angeles, in order to profit from his tears?

And what right did Sarah Palin have to mistreat the Down Syndrome baby, Trig Palin, by dragging him along on a book tour for photo ops before dumping him off on an aide, who then put him down on an asphalt parking lot in Florida, where he crawled around amid broken glass, cigarette butts and discarded chewing gum? (I was there, I saw it, and I write about it in THE ROGUE.)

For that matter, what right does Sarah have to force her youngest daughter, Piper, to accompany her on profit-making, brand-enhancing, self-aggrandizing bus tours, as she did this summer?

Not being a lawyer or judge, I can’t say that either Sarah or Bristol have violated existing child abuse laws in any state.

But being a human being, who cares about the helpless among us, I do not hesitate to label this cruelty as disgusting.

Sarah Palin’s oldest daughter, Bristol, has built a reality TV show and tabloid career out of being the no-talent, knocked-up daughter of a famous/infamous political figure.

No harm in that. This is America, where bottom fish often rise to the top of the celebrity heap.

The harm arises when Sarah Palin’s daughter torments Sarah Palin’s grandson to feed the maw of reality TV.

Tripp Palin, 2, was given no choice: he had to perform as part of his mother’s shtick.

The photos above document the fact that he didn’t like it one bit.

Thousands of photos document Sarah’s similar mistreatment of the even younger Trig.

Sarah: it’s okay that you tried to scam America. That you succeeded to the extent you did is America’s fault as much as it’s yours.

Bristol: it’s okay that you tried to cash in. That you succeeded to the extent you did is America’s fault as much as it’s yours.

But, listen, Sarah and Bristol: when you make babies and toddlers suffer in pursuit of your own further fame and fortune, you’ve crossed a moral line.

Tip of the hat to Jesse Griffin at Immoral Minority for first calling attention to this.

The question now is: will anyone in mainstream media take note?

In 1954, U.S. Army head counsel Joseph Welch, during the Army-McCarthy hearings, expressed his disgust to the soon-to-be-disgraced right-wing U.S. Senator Joseph McCarthy for having tried to destroy the career of a young attorney who had dared to stand up to McCarthy’s bullying. Welch said:

“Until this moment, Senator, I think I have never really gauged your cruelty or your recklessness. [This] is a young man who…is starting what looks to be a brilliant career…Little did I dream you could be so reckless and so cruel as to do an injury to that lad…I fear he shall always bear a scar needlessly inflicted by you…I like to think that I am a gentle man but your forgiveness will have to come from someone other than me…Let us not assassinate this lad further, Senator. You’ve done enough. Have you no sense of decency, sir? At long last, have you left no sense of decency?”

That’s the question I ask of Sarah and Bristol in regard to their mistreatment of their children:

Have you no sense of decency?

Sarah, did you know what a huge opportunity you had for positive publicity after this tragedy at Tucson?

Did you even think about what a good Christian would do? Did that matter? Did you even listen to what Roger Ailes said to you, about keeping your head down?

If you had simply waited til the day after the services that Obama attended for the victims, and had a press conference or interview expressing your SINCERE condolences to the families, you would have gained some credibility.

Had you even been willing to GO to the memorial services, keep your mouth shut, and just offer condolences it could have been a major coup for you.

You know, guys like Reagan or Tip 0'neal would have played that classy, and attended the memorial service.

But not mean girl Sarah Cuda Paylin, not a damn chance. To hell with compassion, or sadness, or showing remorse, or a christian response.

You had to blast away at the media,

Nice try. But people who are actually mentally ill are not necessarily under their own control. They can be influenced by events, people, and ideas that other people would disregard.

What is disgusting and obscene about Palin's sociopathic behavior is that after her original statement, she did not back down, did not apologize, and indeed, doubled down on the hateful imagery.

To this day, she purposefully works the same "reload" imagery into her statements, even if they make no logical sense whatsoever (reload means ballots).

Just to make her nasty, immature, mean girl, tantrum-throwing toddler point that no one can tell her what to do.

Most people outgrow the "you're not the boss of me" attitude by about age five. Palin has not.

The concept of actually discussing an issue, and maybe deciding as a mature adult, that she could make changes in her behaviors, or apologize for misunderstandings is apparently impossible for this hateful, angry, narcissistic, rage-filled bully.

It is irrelevant at this point whether Loughner was influenced by her thuggish wording. What is more important is that her complete inability to ever accept any criticism whatsoever made it more important for her to stomp her foot and declare her right to say anything she wanted with no regard for any possible consequences.

A mature, civilized person who cared about others would have been horrified by the idea (right or wrong) that any words of theirs might have contributed in any way to harm to others and would have stated a firm intention to be more aware of how they conveyed their ideas.

Palin's character in regard to public service is completely lacking in all respects. She is unfit for any elected office.

    Dear Anon 9:44,

    Sometime during the Bush
Admin I watched a documentary on handguns and US law. It was quite a shocker as it told how among all the states the only point of agreement is to not allow ex-convicts to purchase guns.

However, not all states are diligent about procuring a person's background beyond just asking the question on a form that everyone knows won't be checked.

But even in states where a person's mental and prison records are fully checked, there is a loophole in the federal law that allows literally 'just anyone' to purchase a license to sell guns and that (at the time of the doco being made) some 5000 applications for gun sale licenses on average were received by the agency PER DAY.

That means 'just anyone' under current federal law can purchase a gun-selling license - and with the license can then wholesale the order of any gun desired.

Sarah Palin is responsible for Christina's death. She advocates these irresponsible, unfettered laws. She does so publicly without regard to consequence or public safety. She is as responsible as any other politician who believes that any Tom Dick or Harry should be allowed without question to purchase a gun.

To have been the politician who blithely put her opponents names and addresses in cross-hair graphics on public posters like the wanted posters one sees at the post office demonstrated her personal lack of ethics while her blood libel speech demonstrated her complete inability to show compassion to another human being.

Sarah Palin is a piss-poor excuse of a woman. I wouldn't vote for her to take out my ex-husband's trash.

In reading Dunn's book McCain was not bullied he chose. He was desperate in the face of Obama's popularity and PR successes, he panicked, just like he did on the USS Forrestal and just like on the Forrestal he made a series blind blundering unmanly choices.

McCain has had a life time of privileged opportunities that he has blundered through and so many second chances to be a man and grow up and make adult choices, and yet he still falls short at every jump.

I can barely write. I have two sweet daughters and I can't imagine the pain this family endures everyday.

Palin's blood libel speech was so off the wall as to be beyond reason. Seeing the prop American flag so defiled by her ignorance also was painful.

She is a woman who has a lot to atone for, but given her inadequate compassion response we should not look for any apology soon. I hope one day the enormity of her comments cause her to writhe in shame. Until then I will look away. She is disgusting and inhuman.

The NRA is also not without guilt. We hang up when they call for a donation. This year I am appealing to all my friends and neighbors to do the same.

I agree that his choice may have helped us avoid a disaster.

  46. In "Game Change", McCain is told that Palin is a "Big risk, big reward".

McCain answered, "You shouldn't have told me that. I've been a risk taker all my life".

The "reward" would have been McCain and Palin's alone! All of their disgusting cronies hired? In the White House, etc? **shiver**

Quotes like that PROVE McCain was ONLY thinking about HIS glory, HIS legacy, HIMSELF.

He couldn't give two shits about America, you or Christina Taylor Green. He is a real scumbag.

(Didyaknow he left his 1st wife upon his return from Vietnam? She'd gotten paralyzed in an accident and well, she just didn't seem as appealing anymore. Not when perky, blonde, RICHHHHH Cindy Budweiser is sniffing around your groin. **shudder** Truly. He's one piece of. work.).

Rest In Peace, Christina Taylor Green. There are good people in this world who will always honor your memory, grieve your loss, and wonder how many lives you could have touched had you more time.

Gryphen, posts like this should be done more often, and in the mainstream media as well. Reading some of the callous comments just makes me wonder what kind of world we're levaing our kids.

What struck me most was how gracious Christina's Mother's response was to the doctors and nurses. She knew the feeling of trying your best to save a life, and don't succeed. There are no words to describe that kind of grace.

What I can't wrap my brain around is how can one be "pro life" and "pro guns" while inciting hate, invokeing "blood libel" and wearing the cloak of eternal victimhood?

Thank You for reminding me of this beautiful young girl.

One thing that is less talked about than Palin's blood libel video response is her response after Gabby Giffords went on air to express her concern about being targeted with crosshairs. Palin then proceeded to double down on the gun rhetoric in a facebook post.

There is something seriously wrong with her.

Awful tragedy. The article on AZCentral touched me deeply. RIP, Christina Taylor Green.

And, FU paylump for your "blood libel" victim bullshit. Crosshairs and "don't retreat, reload" nonsensical simplistic soundbytes DO have consequences, you narcissistic, sociopathic dullard.
