Police in Ohio have charged a former Navy SEAL after discovering “overwhelming evidence” that he lied when he said three black men shouted obscenities at him, and then shot him in the stomach.
Chris Heben, a 44-year-old former Navy SEAL who served from 1996 through 2006, told police in Bath Township that he was almost hit by a low-profile sports car in a grocery store parking lot in Akron on March 28. He said that there were three black men in the car, and that they shouted obscenities at him.
Heben claimed that he went into the Mustard Seed grocery store, but returned to his car because he forgot his wallet.
That’s when one of the men in the same car yelled, “You got a big mouth white boy. You need to learn some f*cking respect,” and then shot him in the abdomen.
According to Heben’s story, he plugged the bullet hole, and tried to chase the men down in his car until he began to lose consciousness. So, he stopped at a fire station for help.
Heben’s incredible story scored him interviews with national media outlets like CNN and Fox News, and turned him into a local hero, boosting his profile as a spokesperson for the Montrose Auto Group.
However according to the police Heben seems to have made some shit up:
“We have overwhelming evidence based upon video, cell phone records and interviews that the shooting did not occur in the West Market Plaza and that Mr. Heben made false allegations to us,” Bath Township Police Chief Mike McNeely explained.
So if Heben was nowhere near where he claimed he was when he got shot, how likely do you think that ANY of his story might be true?
Yeah, me neither.
Of course white people blaming black people for crimes they did not commit is a tried and true part of our racial heritage. In the South black men were lynched over even the possibility that they might have raped a white woman, and in the Susan Smith case she claimed that a black man carjacked her and kidnapped her sons, when in fact she had murdered them.
When we ask ourselves why Michael Brown was shot by a police officer for simply walking down the street, I think much of the blame can be laid at the feet of a certain mythology that sees black men as animals who rape and kill without remorse.
And while we are addressing that myth we also need to take a moment to examine the myth that military members are all heroes who should be trusted and admired without hesitation.
Because clearly, that is also quite false.

It is funny how in a place like Ferguson, there are never any witnesses to crime.... but as soon as there was a shoooting by a white police officer, apparently everyone has seen it. 1:10, the only video we have seen so far is Brown robbing a store minutes before his encounter with Wilson, and some cell phone videos after Brown was shot, which prove nothing. Please inform us as to all the other videos you are referring to.

DeleteNefer, how right you are! Google the Tulsa Race Riot. It happened in 1921 and the wiki account is reasonably accurate. The "Greenwood Wall" still existed in the 1960's where no black lived south of Greenwood although that has changed since that time.

He didn't grow up in Tulsa but his dad was a chief of police in another Oklahoma town and my dad's "stories" were usually accurage. He said that a white woman told her relatives that a black elevator operator said hello to her. That was all it took and so the riots began. At least 30 blacks were killed although some said many more died.

He is taken by police to a variety of places that are not a jail, threatened with a criminal charge, and finally released after his fellow MM protestors demand his release, having never been anywhere but a few empty parking lots where no one could locate him. This incident is sparsely reported as his having "leafleted cars in violation of the law, refusing to cooperate because "he planted his feet firmly and asked what violation they were arresting him for", and falsely reporting that he was taken to the regular booking area then released. Comments on WSCOT's website call him a "boy" who "got what was coming to him". The station falsely reports that he was leafleting Union propaganda. I watched all of WSCOT's broadcasts Tuesday and couldn't find this story. I finally found it online.
WSCOT INSTEAD airs as their second story Tuesday that a "woman" got in an argument with her boyfriend outside a popular nightclub in the city center. After the argument she left on foot to go home alone and a "6' 1" large black male with a 2" afro came out of an alley and grabbed her", took her into the alley and raped her.
Not that I condone or would belittle the seriousness of the rape. I myself was kidnapped at gunpoint by a stranger (I was always asked if he was black - he wasn't, and he was never found) in 1980 two doors from my home. But rape happened here 214 times last year and I never hear it on the news. Why is it so important that this is the second story of the day with such a "one size fits all black man" description of a perpetrator when the REAL story is that a black man tried to raise interest in his community in voting rights and HE was kidnapped and violated by the police for doing so?
It's clear why these stories were presented to the people of this area the way that they were. They want to remind us that there are scary black men out there, and don't want anyone to think about registering to vote in these last few weeks that they can do so before the midterm election.
Update - guess what? Today's report on the "scary black man" is: "Never mind". It didn't happen. She made it up. They're not going to charge her with a crime because they don't want to discourage anyone from reporting a "real rape".

Last month in a Minneapolis working-class suburb, two white men in their early 20s claimed to have left a bar at 2AM with 2 black women. They both ended up hospitalized in critical condition.
ReplyDeleteThey claimed they dropped the women off at a corner and were then attacked by 2 black men. Somehow they escaped and drove their car 2 miles north of the scene of the incident before calling police at 4:25 AM.
The online comments were racist drivel, yet few noticed the many obvious holes in the story. The lengthy time between the alleged attack and the police call. The corner where they supposedly dropped off the women was just a few yards from the local police department. The place they stopped to call police was just a couple blocks from the local hospital.
I think it's a particularly weak mind that seeks to scapegoat black people in general, and black men in particular.
I agree with all points you bring up, including the hero myth. There are cameras EVERYWHERE you go, closed circuit, phone cameras and even google maps cameras have been used to crack cases and get at the truth.
