Nobody explains the problem with stupid people better than John Cleese.
I am not a mind reader but I know for a fact who most of you were thinking of while he was describing how stupid people are too stupid to realize that they are stupid.

And, frequently, as is the case with Sarah Palin, stupid people are so stupid that they think they are smart and that the smart people are stupid.
ReplyDeleteBeaglemom
It's called the Dunning Kruger Effect and is a real thing and also encompasses the opposite end of the spectrum, where competent smart people can't shake the belief they are frauds. :)

DeleteThank you for that. I just googled it since I had never heard of it. Sometimes I feel so ignorant.
Delete@9:43
DeleteI ALWAYS feel ignorant, but then, I am smart enough to recognize I don't (and can't) know everything.
Gawd! Can you imagine how horrible it would be to actually know EVERYTHING? That would mean there was nothing new to learn. Now, THAT would make me suicide!
Ignorance is curable. Stupid is permanent. Let's hear it for ignorance!
This is why the Tea Party followers were so moldable. They thought if they learned what they were told they knew it all. SP, of course, cannot understand where the questions come from. That's why she can't answer them.
DeleteMy awareness of what I didn't know expanded (exponentially perhaps?) at a greater rate than what I learned. The universe became vaster and more complex. The arrogance of youth drained away a long time ago.
DeleteI heard it compared to a circle. The circumference of a small circle is very small. As you expand your circle of knowledge, the circumference, i.e., the border with the unknown, becomes larger.
DeleteThe more you know, the more you realize how much you don't know. The less you know...
DeleteI love it when parents can freely share their kids on holidays on the same day. And birthdays. When you live close, it's very easy for one parent to have the first half of the day and the other the second half. Levi had Tripp early and Bristol had him later on the 27th. Bristol took him to spend time with Levi's cousins daughter who lives near.
ReplyDeleteSee? once nasty media people and tank stop their bs, things aren't bad.
So stop stalking them and let them all continue living respectfully
Stop trolling here you clueless idiot.
Delete"Living respectfully" is not grammatical.
DeleteWhich rather proves Mr. Cleese's point.
I submit respectfully.
Now let's see, I wouldn't know a thing about how Tripp spent his birthday, or with whom, if you wouldn't have posted it here on a completely unrelated thread, and you call US stalkers?
DeleteYou are the one stalking them. You are insane. Who but their family would know these details and then splatter them on the internet? Why are you describing all the family activities in such detail? Why are you stalking them?
DeleteYou are a disgusting piece of work and the fact that you are mentally ill doesn't excuse you.
Also, for once in your fucking g*ddamn useless stalking, lying life, make a comment that is on topic or pay for your own g*ddamn blog.
I know you are too much of a chickenshit coward to respond, and if you do, it will be with more of your stupid, senseless lies, because you are just a nasty person.
Pointy, you hater. What do any of your fantasies have to do with john Cleese? Jesus daffy, get a grip. Quit stalking them.
DeleteHey! Somebody kick the fucking troll, it's stuck again.
I think you are on the wrong thread.
DeleteAlicia, is that you? Are you the one who made that creepy facebook page for Tripp a while ago that was quickly pulled? Something tells me, it was you.
DeleteAnonymous9:31 AM
DeleteYou are the PERFECT example of the Dunning-Kruger effect! YOU can't seem to stay on topic?!
We don't care about PISSYBRISSY!!!! STFU troll!
I guess you are warming up for G's next EXPOSE!

DeleteYou are the one stalking them. You are insane. Who but their family would know these details
****
Nefer,
sometimes the troll actually busts Sarah! Like when she posted about
"Todd birthday party" on Malia's when Sarah "claimed to be traveling" then the details of the Hoedown surfaced...heh! Sometimes the troll droppings Bust Sarah...!!!
Its so funny, just like Sarah's "Todd doesn't have a prostitute ring" BEFORE anyone knew about a "Ring"....Hey the troll may be Sarah herself! Loose lips sink ships!

DeleteWith all due respect, THIS is what living vibrantly looks like. Seems like words have the same effect as nailing jello to a wall, but photos speak without words. No camo, thong dresses, or moose chili (they have "help").
Cleesh's amusing take on Sarah Palin. She's a parrot:

If Sarah, Bristol and a brick were playing Jeopardy .... I would bet on the brick to win.
ReplyDeleteAnd then there's the MOST ADMIRED MAN IN THE WORLD for SEVEN YEARS STRAIGHT! Read 'em and weep Sarah, as usual your head is up your ass and you are on the wrong side of everything.
ReplyDeletePresident Obama Named The Most Admired Man In The World For The 7th Straight Year
The endless Republican anti-Obama campaign suffered another defeat as for the seventh consecutive year President Obama was named the most admired man in the world by Gallup.
Obama has appeared on the top 10 list each year since 2006, including ranking No. 1 in each of the last seven years, all by healthy margins over the second-place finisher.

Ahh, faux is the punchline yet again - right where it belongs.
ReplyDeleteHe personifies stupidity himself. Nothing he has every said or done shows otherwise. Take it from John Cleese, and credit him with "How to Irritate People," because he's surely one of the most irritating people of all time. Just the sound of his voice makes my teeth hurt.
ReplyDeleteMonty Python enjoyed huge comedic success in spite of, and not because of, John Cleese.
Huge ego, minimal talent, carried by the gifts of those around him.
John Cleese is an actor, writer and comedian. He has been nominated for an Academy Award, numerous BAFTA awards (and won) , Primetime Emmy award (won ) and Screenwriters Guild award. Seems pretty successful for a so-called stupid person. What have you achieved in your life?
Delete"He personifies stupidity himself. Nothing he has every said or done shows otherwise."
Delete--------------------------------------------
Well, now, that is just a stupid thing to say.
Read his bio. He blames his parents, especially his mother, for most of what has gone wrong in his life, including his bitterness towards women and his failed relationships with them.
DeleteHe criticizes the old American TV show Amos 'n Andy, claiming it starred white actors in black-face. He may be confusing the TV show with the earlier radio program, which featured some white voice actors. But if he's going to put criticism in his biography, he should get the essential facts straight, and ensure he has a good editor.
Most of his biography is a dull history of his early upbringing and education, full of complaints, blame, and sarcasm. He's probably planning to write a series of bios like Stephen Fry. I'm not buying future volumes. I've heard enough of his snide comments in interviews to know what he thinks of most of his Monty Python experience. His jokes about Graham Chapman's death crossed the line, in my opinion.
And Anon at 12:59, I'm not a sycophantic flatterer of celebrities. I don't need to be famous to legitimize a negative viewpoint. I've had a long and happy marriage (unlike Cleese--but then that's his mother's fault), raised a large functional family, earned a master's degree, traveled a great deal, lived in Korea and Japan, where I taught English, and I'm a published author. I think for myself, and I say what I think. Showbiz awards don't impress me. Look how many Justin Bieber has.
But don't worry about my low opinion of John Cleese. He thinks highly enough of himself to more than compensate for comments from his detractors.
Are you fucking kidding me, Jude?
DeleteJohn Cleese is nowhere close to "stupid" and had a pretty impressive career as an actor and script/sketch writer even before Monty Python. And then there's Fawlty Towers and everything he's done since. You might not appreciate his particular brand of funny or even his voice, but hey, I guess there's no accounting for taste or, in this case, knowledge.
John Cleese had a lifelong relationship with Graham Chapman, was there when he died, and gave his eulogy. The two were COMEDY writing partners and knew each other much better than someone who may have enjoyed Monty Python and more recently read Cleese's biography. Is it possible that John Cleese knew better than you if and where the line is in terms of joking about Chapman even after death?
Delete"He personifies stupidity himself. Nothing he has every said or done shows otherwise."
This is utterly and objectively wrong, no matter how you feel about him as a person or whether or not he is funny.
He delivered a touching eulogy. Then he went on to joke that after Graham stopped smoking, he was envious of him, and glad that he died. Not particularly witty.
DeleteCleese's on-going feud with Eric Idle is partly based on envy of Idle's financial security. Apparently Idle is a smart investor, and did not incur hefty pay-outs to ex-wives. Cleese calls him Yoko Idle, a two-for-one insult. Cleese dismissed Michael Palin's fascinating travel shows as dull. He's also mocked Terry Jones for his weight, lack of height, and Welsh background.
Cleese carries attention-seeking to new lows. When he had his teeth pulled in order to get implants, he had his old teeth strung on a chain so he could wear them around his neck. What a card.
On Fawlty Towers, you can see the rage-filled persona expressed in the guise of comedy. He was impatient and insulting to everyone, all the time. He actually knocked Andrew Sachs unconscious on the set, not bothering to pull his punch. He didn't apologize, but Sachs, being the bigger man, forgave him.
In his contempt for the people he's describing as too stupid to realize they're stupid, Cleese is inadvertently including people who have IQs in the dull normal range, and those who are learning-challenged.He has no empathy for the disadvantaged. He's just preening himself on his intelligence.
When Monty Python was fresh and new, I loved it, but Cleese struck me as a bitter man. Over the years, that opinion has been confirmed by watching him in interviews, reading about him, and just this fall, reading his autobiography, "So Anyway," which I'm guessing no one else commenting here has read.
I've always liked Cleese and each of the actors in Monty Python. Getting comedy right isn't as easy as it looks. They're fully human, and I'm sure each has their demons in their background, but they turn it around somehow and make others laugh while doing it. His theory on stupidity is something I've always pondered myself, how they find each other is beyond comprehension.
