The world is moving toward crisis and a state of "geopolitical depression" as the presidency of Donald Trump accelerates divisions among citizens and the unraveling of the global order, risk consultancy Eurasia Group warns.
Liberal democracies are suffering from a deficit of legitimacy not seen since World War II, and today's leaders have largely abandoned civil society and common values, Eurasia Group says in its annual assessment of top geopolitical risks. The breakdown in norms opens the door to a major event that could rock the global economy and markets.
"In the 20 years since we started Eurasia Group, the global environment has had its ups and downs. But if we had to pick one year for a big unexpected crisis — the geopolitical equivalent of the 2008 financial meltdown — it feels like 2018," said Eurasia Group President Ian Bremmer and Chairman Cliff Kupchan.
U.S. global power is "sputtering to a stall" as the Trump philosophy of retrenchment and unilateralism sows confusion among both allies and rivals, Eurasia Group says. The world now lacks leadership to steer it through the impending crisis.
"'America First' and the policies that flow from it have eroded the U.S.-led order and its guardrails, while no other country or set of countries stands ready or interested in rebuilding it … significantly increasing global risk."
Here are some of Eurasia Group's predictions.
- China will fill vacuum left by United States: People argue that America should not be the world's police, but have they considered who takes that responsibility once we drop the ball?
- Miscalculations spark conflict: I think knowing Trump's lack of understanding concerning world affairs that this is a given.
- Technology Cold War: Oh yeah, most definitely.
- Tough year for Mexico
- Deteriorating U.S.-Iran relations: Already seeing this happen. Could lead to more direct conflicts, even militarily, or proxy wars within other countries.
- Falling trust in democratic institutions: America is the gold standard when it comes to democracy, once the rest of the world sees that it failed us why would they trust it in their countries?
- Rise of protectionism 2.0: Already seeing it.
- Brexit gets tougher to manage: Undoubtedly.
- Identity politics in Southern Asia.
- Africa becomes less stable: Not an expert on this, but it is scary to imagine such a volatile nations becoming even more less stable than it is now.
If they all prove accurate we may be looking at a breakdown of world order that will see the rise of more dictators, increased poverty, and even the possibility of another world war.

How does everybody feel about that protest vote now?
Trump is a destructive narcissistic child. This forecast is not unexpected. Most of the idiots who voted still think he's the cat's meow. Who knew this country was populated by so many ignorant cretins. They're dancing at their own funeral pyre.
ReplyDeleteAmong those ignorant cretins, another trait: They will NEVER admit that they were wrong. I know plenty of them.
DeleteTrump's base is going to learn a very hard lesson, it will be ugly, but that is going to be the eventual outcome of this bullshit regime.
DeleteI for one, give my money to animals in need and really, in the plainest of words, fuck these deplorables and theirs, don't care if they starve, don't care if they suffer, don't care if their trailers have no heat. The sooner we are rid of them the better.

ReplyDeleteThis is my New Year's wish.
“Steve is learning that winning isn’t as easy as I make it look.”
ReplyDeleteLie, lie, and lie. And then lie some more. Completely fool the millions of ignorati in this country. That's how Trump won.
I think Bannon is more correct than the Republicans are currently saying in defense of their leader, Trump.
DeleteI will purchase his book which will become the number one best seller.
2:08. The last thing I want is for Bannon's book to be a bestseller. That bastard did the whispering into Trump's empty head. Now look where we are.
Delete2:35 PM - he's another that could follow the likes of Ailes and Breitbart into the grave and I wouldn't shed a tear.
DeleteI just can't help but think Bannon is spot on about Trump. History will tell us if his words are correct and truthful in his book. All the crap eventually comes out about a potus and it will about Trump. Heck, it's already spilling out one hundred fold - facts that are truthful and documented.
Delete2:35 PM I bet the book will rise to being #1. Too many folks throughout the country and world are anti Trump.
DeleteOh great! I gave up smoking three months ago to be turned into a burnt biscuit anyway.

Good for you, keep it up! They are $11 a pack here in Alaska so that makes $20/day for a pack and a six of the favorite craft beer. Add that to all the great legal weed we can purchase and I just added up last month and it's over a grand just for beer, smokes and weed, and there's two of us :-)
DeleteGood thing we never had kids because we're drinking and smoking their college funds, ha, ha.
I cast my vote for Hillary and was spot on in picking the better and correct candidate.
ReplyDeleteOther things we are going to see in the near future - Trump's death - not assassination but a major illness
Republicans in Congress going into hiding
Republicans afraid to run for office
the demise of the Republican party
more support of the Democratic party
Lol, Hillary can't even keep her own house from catching on fire.
DeleteSaturn is coming into its home in Capricorn, this after Pluto has been rattling it's death blow in this house of leadership for the last several years (Arab Spring anyone?), and has a few to go. But Saturn is home to set the new leadership paradigm. It is not what we are seeing-we are seeing the death of the old and not-working. Because it is likely the death of the patriarchy-there is and will be much testosterone-fueled images coming. A lot of fireworks on the way out. So important during this time to keep one's eyes on the prize.

Why would the man overseeing the Russia investigation request a meeting with the Republican Speaker of the House?
ReplyDelete...Rosenstein requested the meeting and has not been giving Ryan routine briefings, so this is not normal. There is something going down, and one can only suspect that Rosenstein met with Ryan to give the Speaker a head’s up about what is coming next. Given the way that the media reports have been trending, it would not be surprising if more indictments were coming, or if the FBI had new information on their end of the investigation.
Either way, when the Deputy Attorney General requests a meeting with the man who controls the impeachment process, it is not good news for Trump and his White House. Rosenstein’s meeting with Ryan could be our first clue that the Russia investigation is taking another giant leap forward. Stay tuned because it may not be long now before the collusion hits the fan.

REVEALED: Donald Trump used his Trump Tower secretary to trick his buddies’ wives into sleeping with him
ReplyDelete...“Trump liked to say that one of the things that made life worth living was getting your friends’ wives into bed,” the starred paragraph begins.
“In pursuing a friend’s wife, he would try to persuade the wife that her husband was perhaps not what she thought. Then he’d have his secretary ask the friend into his office; once the friend arrived, Trump would engage in what was, for him, more or less constant sexual banter. Do you still like having sex with your wife? How often? You must have had a better f*ck than your wife? Tell me about it. I have girls coming in from Los Angeles at three o’clock. We can go upstairs and have a great time. I promise … And all the while, Trump would have his friend’s wife on the speakerphone, listening in,” the book reported.

Delete“For the youngsters out there, it’s impossible to overstate just how bizarre today’s news is,” Tapper began. “President Trump issued a statement like no presidential statement ever before in American history, lambasting his former campaign and White House senior strategist Steve Bannon in no uncertain terms. This comes after the release of explosive excerpts from a new book claiming to reveal the inner-workings of the Trump campaign and White House.”
ReplyDelete“What could be the most consequential revelation, Bannon seeming to tell the book’s author he thinks that meeting between Jared Kushner and Paul Manafort with others who were billed as being from the Russian government, that that meeting was ‘unpatriotic’ and ‘treasonous.’”
Tapper explained that Trump, after being told about that excerpt, “unloaded today,” releasing an official White House statement insisting Bannon “not only lost his job, he lost his mind.”
“And then the president got nasty,” Tapper said.

Russian social media conglomerate gave information about Trump campaign to Senate investigators: report
ReplyDelete...The Russian tech firm appears to be cooperating with the Senate Judiciary Committee by providing documents related to communication between Russian nationals and Dan Scavino, a Trump campaign staffer who now works as the White House social media director.
Vkontakte, a social network similar to Facebook, ranks as the most popular website in Russia and is owned by the publicly traded Mail.Ru.
The nature of the documents obtained by the Committee isn’t clear, but previous reports in the press have detailed emails exchanged in 2016 between Konstantin Sidorkov, VKontakte’s director of partnership marketing, and Scavino.
The Washington Post first reported on an email exchange last month, citing “people familiar with the messages.” Sidorkov emailed Scavino and Donald Jr., offering to help make Trump’s campaign “the top news in Russia,” the Post reported. In response, Scavino expressed interest, but it isn’t clear that the conversation progressed beyond that introduction.
The Post added that Scavino’s liaison with Vkontakte was Rob Goldstone, the music publicist who also brokered the Trump Tower meeting between Donald Trump, Jr, and a Kremlin-linked lawyer.
On Wednesday, Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, sent letters to Scavino and Brad Parscale, the Trump campaign’s digital director, asking about the campaign’s contacts with Russia. “[T]he Committee has received information that you may have corresponded with Russian nationals regarding Trump campaign social media efforts,” Feinstein wrote to Scavino.
Vkontakte is broadly used in Russia, but its English-language users tend to be politically aligned far to the right of the mainstream, the Post reported.

“A non-denial denial.” Trump doesn’t dispute any of Bannon’s shocking charges of treason
ReplyDelete...The statement goes on at length, but what’s notably absent is a detailed denial of Bannon’s specific claim that the Trump team’s campaign meeting with Russian operatives in 2016 was “treasonous” and “unpatriotic.”
Appearing on CNN with Wolf Blitzer, Rep. Ted Lieu (D-CA) stressed that exact point:

“Right now, President Trump is in a noose,” Lakoff suggested. “It’s the money laundering noose that’s tightening around his neck.”
ReplyDelete“It shows up not just in Bannon’s point about money laundering and also in the Fusion point about money laundering in The New York Times op-ed today, but also in the fact that the main money launderer, Ike Kaveladze, was at the Trump, Jr. meeting in Trump Tower, he’s the eighth man there,” Lakoff explained.
“You’re saying you believe all of the tweet storm in the last two days is all about providing air cover to distract from this money laundering news?” Todd asked.
“The whole thing is distracting from money laundering, and from the fact that Kaveladze has been summoned by both by Mueller and by Congressional committees,” Lakoff replied.

ReplyDeleteAre Trump’s tweets turning conservatives liberal?
ReplyDelete...All of this has led conservative intellectuals to rethink their past positions, among them Jennifer Rubin of the Washington Post, Max Boot of Foreign Policy and David Frum of The Atlantic. Their rethinking of conservatism is a microcosmic form of a macrocosmic pattern in which conservatism’s sphere of influence is shrinking. As Frum put it, “The project of defending [Trump] against his coming political travails—or at least of assailing those who doubt and oppose him—is already changing what it means to be a conservative.”
But that’s not where this ends. As conservatism’s sphere of influence shrinks, liberalism’s is growing. I can only speak for myself, but what I see on social media is startling: people pledging allegiance to the principles of liberalism—freedom and equality—but discovering in the Trump era these are liberalism’s core. As Max Boot put it in an important essay, “If the Trump era teaches us anything, it is how far we still have to go to realize the ‘unalienable Rights’ of all Americans to enjoy ‘Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness,’ regardless of gender, sexuality, religion, or skin color.”
And many appear to be waking up to the fact that much of what they thought was liberalism was the creation of conservative ideology—distortions, misrepresentations or outright falsehoods. I can’t help thinking that the growing awareness of the Russian threat has somehow snapped a majority of people out of their stupor, encouraging them to realize democracy is insufficient to real freedom. For that, we need to defend and protect liberal democracy.

Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA), a member of the House Intelligence Committee investigating Russia, said that investigators want to see Trump’s bank records, and they want Steve Bannon to testify about Trump money laundering.
ReplyDelete...“We want to see the bank records. We want to understand the financial transactions. A number of people have testified that they’ve used financial entanglements And we know from Donald Trump Jr.’s own mouth, that the Russians were heavily investing. Primarily their investments were coming from Russia… I believe we should follow bank records. I think they would be illuminating for the American people to understand what investments were being made as well as what investments Donald Trump had made in the Russians.”
Rep. Swalwell also said that the investigators want Bannon to testify, “Absolutely, and I hope that the I hope the American people would be able to review his transcript and the transcript of every witness that has come before us.”
