Parkland school shooting survivors confront the "What about Chicago" anti-gun control argument directly.

This is in an extraordinary move on the part of these young people.

They are not selfishly hogging the attention for themselves, but rather using the attention directed at them to shine a light on those communities that also suffer from gun violence but have been neglected by the media.

They are demonstrating not only incredible compassion but advertising their unwavering commitment to see this movement through until it achieves the change that they are demanding.

If I worked for the NRA this is around the time that I would start breathing into a paper bag to keep from hyperventilating.

By the way if you want to know why Chicago really has the problems with guns that it has, there is a great NPR article from 2017 that will do much to explain that to you.

Conservatives attack credibility of students who survived the school shooting in Florida. Seriously? Update!

Courtesy of Think Progress:

David Hogg, a senior at the school, was one of the first to appear on national television and demand action. “We’re children. You guys are the adults. You need to take some action and play a role. Work together. Come over your politics and get something done,” Hogg said, looking directly into the camera.

Hogg is now being targeted by Gateway Pundit, a far-right blog that has press credentials from the Trump White House. A post published on Monday by the site’s White House correspondent, Lucian Wintrich, features Hogg’s photo with the word “EXPOSED” stamped in red.

Wintrich says Hogg and other students throw up some “red flags.” The first “red flag” is that Hogg’s father is a retired FBI agent. (Hogg freely admitted this on national television.) The insinuation is that Hogg’s father, who does not even work for the FBI, has tasked his son with talking about gun control to take the heat off the agency.

Wintrich also uses an edited YouTube video of Hogg having some difficulty answering questions for a taped interview as evidence that Hogg is “heavily coached on lines and is merely reciting a script.” There is no evidence, in the video or elsewhere in the article, supporting this claim.

Wintrich then drops all pretenses and fully embraces the conspiracy:

Why would the child of an FBI agent be used as a pawn for anti-Trump rhetoric and anti-gun legislation? Because the FBI is only looking to curb YOUR Constitutional rights and INCREASE their power. We’ve seen similar moves by them many times over. This is just another disgusting example of it.

Is anybody else having a Sandy Hook deja vu?

Some version of this conspiracy theory has now spread across social media.
It has even been embraced by Donald Trump Jr.:
And Hogg is not their only target.

Trust me when I say that I have seen the conservatives go low before, but to attack these kids, or suggest that they are "milking the deaths of their peers for careers," is so incredibly disgusting that it literally makes me sick to my stomach.

I understand the fear that the Right is feeling right now, if I saw these kids coming after me and my party I might be wetting my tighty whiteys as well, but all that attacking them accomplishes is to make them even more determined and erase ANY hope of convincing them that the conservatives and Republican party are not their enemies.

To use perhaps too apt of a metaphor the conservatives are essentially shooting themselves in the foot right now.

And while all this is going on a critically clueless conservative journalist is suggesting that the gun control debate needs to wait until people start showing respect to gun owners:

So if you want to stop school shootings it’s not enough just to vent and march. It’s necessary to let people from Red America lead the way, and to show respect to gun owners at all points. There has to be trust and respect first. Then we can strike a compromise on guns as guns, and not some sacred cross in the culture war.

You know I have heard of "tone deaf" before, but this David Brooks guy is just "deaf deaf."

(Buzzfeed by the way has a rather expansive article on the student's grass roots activism, that essentially drives a stake through the heart of the whole "manipulated by the Left Wing" narrative.)

Update: People are starting to lose their jobs over these smear campaigns.
Nice to see a little justice served.

Hillary Clinton to launch new political group to help fund The Resistance.

Courtesy of Politico:

Six months after losing the presidential election, Hillary Clinton is ready to wade back into politics.

The former secretary of state is building a new political group to fund organizations working on the resistance to President Donald Trump’s agenda, spending recent weeks in Washington, New York City, and Chappaqua, N.Y., meeting with donors and potential groups to invest in, and recruiting individuals for the group’s board of directors, multiple people close to the two-time White House hopeful and people familiar with the group’s planning told POLITICO.

She is looking to launch the group, expected to be called Onward Together — a nod to her campaign slogan, Stronger Together — as soon as next week, they say. Clinton’s spokesman declined to comment for this story.

This is good news for progressives, and definitely bad news for the Trumpsters.

Hillary has proven herself as a fund raiser, and if she gets her husband involved there is really no limit to the money they can pull in to help fund candidates, ad campaigns, and activist organizations.

Somebody actually had the temerity to compare this to Sarah Palin's "all about me" PAC. As if because they are both women these two people would have ANYTHING in common.

This organization will have a board of directors, and trust me when I say that all of its actions will be aggressively scrutinized by the media, so the possibility that it would be some vanity operation designed to fill Hillary's pantsuit pockets with free cash is ridiculous on its face.

And remember Bernie Sanders and Barack and Michelle Obama are launching similar enterprises and nobody seems to have a problem with that.

Today thousands will celebrate President's Day by protesting the one in the White House right now.

Courtesy of NBC News:

Thousands of people nationwide have vowed to spend their Presidents Day Weekend protesting President Donald Trump and his policies at "Not My President's Day" rallies scheduled to take place in at least 25 cities across the country.

This went on through the entire weekend as well, but if you missed them here are some of the protests planned for today:

"Not My President's Day -- Rally," Los Angeles
"Not My President's Day -- Rally (NYC)" New York
"Not My President's Day Rally (Washington DC)," Washington, D.C.
"Not My President's Day -- Rally (Chicago)," Chicago
"Presidents Day Protest KC," Kansas City, Missouri
"Not My President's Day Rally," Denver
"Not My President's Day March," Milwaukee, Wisconsin
"Not My President's Day," Salt Lake City
"ImPEACH NOW! (Not My) President's Day March," Atlanta

Gee it looks as if this activism which started right after Trump's inauguration, and that the Right Wing predicted would peter out quickly, is not doing much petering.

And don't worry if you, like me, are unable to attend any of these rallies.

You can still do your part by writing a letter to your Senators or Congressman, or sending a brief message of dissatisfaction to President Bannon.

Also keep in mind that it is ALWAYS "Not My President" day here on IM.

Actor Michael Sheen abandons his profession, and his life, to fight fascism full time. And in doing so shames us all.

Courtesy of the Independent:

Michael Sheen is so disturbed by the rise of far-right populism he is quitting acting to become an activist, and says he does not know if his relationship with Sarah Silverman will survive.

Sheen will leave Silverman, his partner of two years, and family in Los Angeles and move to Port Talbot in south Wales to combat the wave of “demagogic, fascistic” politics he believes has engulfed the West in the past decade.

He told The Times: “In the same way as the Nazis had to be stopped in Germany in the Thirties, this thing that is on the rise has to be stopped.

“It’s not going to look like this in 10 years’ time. Everything has shifted. The dice are being rolled again.”

His steel-making hometown, population 37,000, voted for Brexit and the Welsh actor says his frustration at this has formed, in part, the impetus for his decision to begin his activism back where he began. His fears were exacerbated by the ascension of Donald Trump and the tensions stoked by his divisive rhetoric.

You know I would like to think that the hours that I put in on this blog have some meaning, and that I am doing my part to fight the good fight and push back on the fascism that we see invading our country. (And let's not bother lying to ourselves to say that fascism is not coming, because we are already seeing it in North Carolina.)

But truth be told I am not sacrificing nearly as much as I should, and neither are most of us.

Make no mistake, despite interference by James Comey, and hacking by the Russians, American voters are ultimately responsible for casting the votes that helped Trump win the electoral college.

Even if we assume that some voting machines were hacked the election still has to be close enough for that to matter.

So We the People are ultimately responsible for helping to usher in fascism and for defying the will of the Founding Fathers.

To rectify that, to save what is left of our republic, we need to rise up and fight.

No, I am not suggesting that we start shooting each other in the streets, or plan assaults against Washington, I am suggesting that we fight back with the same tools used to cripple us in the first place.

If fake news and Right Wing propaganda got us here in 2016 then real information and Left Wing fact checkers can steer us back to where we need to be in 2017.

For starters if you are a Facebook fan of this blog then promote it to all of your friends and family every single day. Or if you are more comfortable with Twitter than by all means use that.

And no not just this blog, but every blog and news site that is working to get information out to the masses.

If we want to make real change, if we want to rescue this nation that we love so much, we must be ready to irritate, frustrate, and ultimately educate the people we love until they see the reality of what is happening in the world.

We should present a deafening roar of facts and figures, a cacophony containing compilations of vital statistics, a constant drumbeat that shatters any illusion that this is business as usual and awakens people to the danger we face as a nation.

I know we cannot all just up and quit our jobs to make activism a full time occupation, but I also know we can always do more.

And truly what ultimately is more important than our future, the future of our families, and the future of this great country?

Woman climbs pole to remove Confederate Battle flag in South Carolina.

Courtesy of the New York Daily News:

A woman was arrested for removing the Confederate flag from the South Carolina Statehouse Saturday -- only to have the banner raised again less than an hour later.

Using a harness, Bree Newsome climbed the 30-foot pole in Columbia just after dawn, organizer Tamika Lewis told the Daily News. Newsome brought down the flag as officers yelled for her to climb down, and State Police took it out of her hands when she reached the bottom.

"You cannot get to me with hatred and oppression and violence," Newsome shouted from the top of the pole, according to video. "I come to do this in the name of God. This flag comes down today."

Now THAT is some fearless activism.

Dear future generations, sorry.

That young man is Prince Ea, an American rapper and activist.

Here is some excerpts courtesy of the Daily Kos:

"Dear Future Generations, I think I speak for the rest of us when I say, 'Sorry.' Sorry that we left you with a mess of a planet. Sorry that we were so caught up in our own doings - to do something."

"Let me tell you, trees are amazing. We literally breathe the air they are creating They clean up our pollution, our carbon, store and purify our water, give us medicine that cures our disease, food that feeds us…"

"I'm sorry that we put profits above people, greed above need, the rule of gold above the Golden Rule. I'm sorry we used nature as a credit card with no spending limit…"

"Hey Fox News, If you don't think climate change is a threat, I dare you to interview the thousands of homeless people in Bangladesh. See while you were in your penthouse nestled, their homes were literally washed away beneath their feet due to the rising sea levels."

"And Sarah Palin. You said you loved the smell of fossil fuels. Well, I urge you to talk to the kids of Beijing who are forced to wear pollution masks just to go to school."

"Cut the beat."

"I'm not sorry. This future, I do not accept it. Because an error does not become a mistake, until you refuse to correct it."

And they say our millennials are lazy and uninvolved.

Go ahead tell that to this young man.

Kind of telling that he felt the need to call out Fox News and Sarah Palin specifically don't you think?

Sarah Palin attacks President Obama over #BringBackOurGirls campaign. Well of course she does.

Courtesy of Tundra Twit's Facebook page:

This photo...

...says it all about the Obama administration’s reliance on junior high-like tweets and tickles in place of a foreign policy rooted in peace through strength. Diplomacy via Twitter is the lazy, ineffectual, naïve, and insulting way for America’s leaders to deal with major national and international issues. It’s embarrassing. Under Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton’s State Department repeatedly refused to recognize Boko Haram as terrorists despite their conventional, predictable Islamic terrorist rants, training, and mission. Now, in a life or death situation, nearly 300 kidnapped Nigerian girls are in the hands of these terrorists awaiting rescue.

And what is the Obama administration’s weapon of choice in this battle for these young girls’ lives? Hashtagging tweets on social media! I kinda-sorta doubt a tweet will intimidate the kidnappers much. So, if you’re going to jump in and do something about these Islamic terrorists at all, then do it right, do it firmly, and kick their ass.

Like the patriot writes in this photo, winning takes Warriors. If you intend to rescue these innocent girls whose only “crime” was seeking an education despite the threats of insane Islamic terrorists who drag women back to the Stone Age (see, Liberals, THAT is the real “war on women” so quit making it up that conservatives wage it), then you need to send a message to the world that our United States military is the strongest force to protect the good guys, and the most deadly against the bad guys. Pretty simple, the world needs to know America is still on the side of the good guys.

If you’re going to get involved anyway, Mr. President, learn to understand this and believe it, then announce it: Victory is only brought to you “courtesy of the red, white and blue.” It’s certainly not won by your mere “unfriending” the bad guys on Facebook. Leading from behind is not the American way.

- Sarah Palin

The first thing to point out is that the #BringOurGirlsBack campaign is NOT the official response to the Nigerian girls kidnapping. The President sent seven military advisers to help search for the girls and provide assistance to President Goodluck Jonathan’s government.

We have also sent drones to help search for the girls. (That must be why there were none left to attack the Operation American Spring protesters today. Don'tcha know?)

As for a military solution to this problem, it is pretty clear that Palin does not recognize the fact that we cannot simply swoop in with out military when ever any problem erupts around the world and immediately solve it overnight.  (Has this woman never seen Black Hawk Down?) Nor do the MAJORITY of Americans want us doing that.

And by the way, considering the mindset of these Boko Haram Islamic militants, it is almost certain that they will immediately kill these young women the minute that American troops make land fall.

As for the #BringOurGirlsBack campaign, what it has done is drawn focus to this issue and helped to apply pressure, not just to the Nigerian government, but to other government as well, which are now also offering support.

And look who DOESN'T think this is all a waste of time.

By the way WHY is Palin so far behind the rest of the Right Wing attack dogs?

After all they have been mocking this campaign for several days now.

In fact some have already started mocking them back.
Here's a tip by the way.

This is NOT about taking cheap political shots at your ideological enemies. And doing so makes you look like a craven bitch.

This is about trying to help, and demonstrate solidarity, with some very frightened young women, in one of the few avenues open to us.

So yes in the end this might not do a great deal, but at least these people were doing SOMETHING.

And doing something is always better than using your time and energy to undermine the efforts of those who try.

Remember this guy? Well wait until you hear his incredible, and heart wrenching story.

Courtesy of some guy on Imgur:

This is Carlos Arredondo, a 52-year-old Costa Rican immigrant. He was at the finish line of the Boston Marathon yesterday with his wife , waiting for the last of the National Guard runners. They were representing Run for the Fallen Maine, an organization established to honor Marines who have been killed since the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. One of those runners had dedicated the race to Mr Arredondo's son.

Immediately after the explosion, Mr Arredondo vaulted a fence to help the wounded many of whom had lost limbs, and used his clothes and towels to stanch victims' bleeding.

Mr Arredondo (center) was seen pulling debris and fencing away from the bloody victims, clearing the way for emergency personnel to tend to their wounds.

Mr Arredondo helped one victim, now identified as Jeff Bauman Jr., who was missing both his legs and drenched in blood, into a wheelchair that race medical staff had brought and said he kept talking to the man so he wouldn't lose consciousness. 'I kept talking to him. I kept saying, "Stay with me, stay with me,"' Mr Arredondo, who is a member of the Red Cross disaster team, told Maine Today. Mr. Bauman is now in stable condition.

Believe it or not that is only a part of the heroism of this incredible man.

To read the rest please click the link at the top.

Once you have finished you might want to click here and sign the petition urging the President to give this man the Presidential Citizens Medal for the bravery he demonstrated after those terrible blasts.

Yesterday I was feeling pretty upset about my country, but with citizens like this man among us I continue to have hope for our future.

Sarah Palin: "Activism truly Is for the children."

The headline is taken from Palin's Facebook page, on which was posted with the above picture of a much younger Trig uncharacteristically wearing his glasses. (Which Trig is this one again?)

Here is the full quote:

As cliche and annoying as it may sound, activism truly IS for the children.

I have no idea what the point of it is except perhaps she has noticed that almost all of her support has dried up and she is hoping that trotting out her most successful prop will loosen some purse strings.

I guess the current version of Trig is just not deemed cute enough to accomplish that anymore.

Of course as we have seen Palin's activism has been exclusively focused on furthering HER agenda and bringing in as much cash as possible.  And the evidence is pretty clear that when she HAS given speeches for charity she makes damn sure that she gets free airfare and hotel commendations, and most often also charges a fee for speaking.

So if I may take the liberty of correcting her title, it undoubtedly should read, "Screw the children, activism is for making the big bucks baby!"

Broadway stars turn song from "Les Miserables" into Obama campaign song. Okay this is awesome!

Wow! That was amazing!

Here is the open letter from their website:

DO YOU HEAR THE PEOPLE SING?

To nearly everyone an RPM's a rev-per-minute. To me it's a Rosa Parks Moment.

Her decision to remain seated in December '55 moved me to stand up in 2012. Like so many over the intervening years, I've taken inspiration from an unflinching American icon who said, "Memories of our lives, of our works and our deeds will continue in others." For me that seminal Moment occurred when Georgetown law student Sandra Fluke was viciously and repeatedly attacked on the air by a podium-pounding predator whose venomous remarks disgusted pretty much everyone within the sound of his voice. (I don't know Ms. Fluke or her assailant.)

More to the point – that predator's driving the Republican bus and arguably no less menacing than the one Ms. Parks encountered 57 years ago.

You'll recall her busman summoned Montgomery police and had her arrested for refusing to give up what had been designated a "Colored Section" seat. (The bus was full; a white man wanted to sit down; the driver reflexively moved the Section sign from in front of Ms. Parks to behind her.)

Under the circumstances she hadn't actually violated the law but was – as well we know – arrested anyway; and convicted.

Her tenacity ignited the modern civil rights movement. Fittingly, history was preserved as that Cleveland Avenue bus now famously resides in the Henry Ford Museum, an enduring testament to character and courage, to those who dared to dream a dream and undeniably to the audacity of hope.

While the GOP's resident rabble-rouser routinely defames those with whom he disagrees, their party's presumptive nominee hasn't the character or courage to condemn such abusive behavior. Indeed, fomenting incivility and intolerance is grist for their ground game – and they're doubling down.

If you're not a moneyed Republican plutocrat with a name commonly mistaken for a mattress, soft drink or sundae, don't own a ball club in Chicago or casino in Macao or have an extra hundred-mil lying around, what do you do to make a difference? You stand up the only way you know how.

I'm not an activist, lobbyist, PAC, 527 or 501(c)-anything, just a private citizen (and sometime parodist) asking "who will be strong and stand with me."

One Term More is a transformative political parody rendered under fair use. The accompanying illustration conveys the transcendent nature of a remarkable man. Sketches based on a recently reported, well-sourced, deeply disturbing event depict an uncommonly cruel act of aggression.

No ad time will be purchased nor will it be sold. It's intended as social commentary, criticism & personal expression, displayed only online and freely available to all. Its purpose and character is informational, non-commercial & not-for-profit. The parodied lyrics are mine; the music's from "Les Mis."

Jefferson wrote, "The greatest good we can do our country is to heal its party divisions and make them one people." The Founding Fathers wouldn't have tolerated 21st century Tea Party polemics. No matter the nation's crushing ills or deep political divide, the framers chose to govern, not obstruct.

Having brought forth a nation conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal, you've got to wonder:

Are there any levelheaded Republicans left to remind untethered Tea Party apostles – notably those washed up on the shores of the Potomac – that incendiary rhetoric, hysterical white populism and a reckless disregard for the unalienable rights of others is not a government of, by or for the people?

Misogynistic, homophobic, radically regressive and ideologically unhinged with little apparent interest in governing and no appetite for compromise or common ground, that Grand Old Party's out-of-order, a consequence of preposterous partisan pandering, legislative belligerence…and all that tea.

To the extent any nominal independent expenditure can underscore the titanic distinctions between candidates, parties and platforms – from ALEC-influenced legislatures codifying colossally misguided stand-your-ground laws to muddleheaded McCarthy-mimicking Members of the House calling colleagues Communists – ours will, we hope, attract the attention of an inquisitive electorate and contribute to a more reasoned electoral outcome.

At the end of the day will unruly Republicans simply be too tone-deaf to hear the people sing? We'll know when tomorrow comes.

Don DeMesquita

Well that was just as powerful as this amazing song! You know I don't know what it is about President Obama but he ALWAYS gets the best songs written for  him, and attracts the most gifted of supporters.

Do you all remember this one?

Well with this kind of talent supporting the President how can he lose?

(H/T to The New Civil Rights Movement.)

A year ago this month Jon Stewart went into the belly of the beast to confront Fox News over their biased coverage and defend his brand of comedy.

Considering the anti-Obama garbage that Fox is producing now, and their attempts to help the Republican party destroy democracy in this country, that this was a relevant interview to see today.

Watch how Stewart remains perfectly reasonable while he carefully explains the difference between a satirist and a humorist, as opposed to a journalist or propagandist.

P.S. There are some good shots at Palin in this interview as well, for those of you who only come here for that kind of thing.

Unite against the War on Women. A call to action this April 28th.

Wow! I am not a woman, but THAT made me want to take up a placard and hit the streets.

And do you know what? I probably will.

Here is the group's Mission Statement:

Help defend women's rights and pursuit of equality. Join Americans all across the United States on April 28th, 2012, as we come together as one to tell members of Congress in Washington DC and legislators in all 50 states, "Enough is enough!"

All Americans have the right to make decisions about their own bodies, including contraception, without interference from government, business or religious institutions.

Everyone is invited to join, plan, and rally as we unite to demand that every person be granted equal opportunities, equal rights, and equal representation.

TELL YOUR LEGISLATORS TO BACK OFF! JOIN US IN YOUR STATE!!! 4.28.12

Here is where you can find the link to the national organization's Facebook page, and where in your area you can get involved.

Below you will find the brilliant Azure Ghosts's creative take on what this conservative agenda being shoved down women's throats is doing to our nation as a whole.

Pretty much says it all doesn't it?

P.S. if graphic does not show up just click here.

Update: For those of you still on the fence concerning the idea that there is a Republican War on Women, a Wisconsin state senator wants to amend existing state law to say the following:

Senate Bill 507, introduced by Republican Senator Glenn Grothman, moves to amend existing state law by "requiring the Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Board to emphasize nonmarital parenthood as a contributing factor to child abuse and neglect."

And who are the vast majority of these "non-marital" parents that are now being accused of contributing to child abuse and neglect?  That's right, MOMS!

More on the civil lawsuit against Sarah Palin, and why it has been moved to the Federal court.

Yesterday I posted about this lawsuit, and one of the questions all of us had was WHY it was moved to the Federal court instead of being left in Juneau.

One of our visitors, who is also a legal eagle, took it upon themselves to answer that questions for us and sent me a PDF of the pertinent legal paperwork.  Below is the "Notice of Removal"

And since I have it, I thought you all might be interested in getting a look at the actual complaint filed by Chip Thoma. These are public documents so they are available to all who are interested.  I am just making access a little easier.
