A number of other attendees pointed this out on Twitter, while also noting that Trump was trying to respond and even laugh at the appropriate moments by watching the reactions of those who WERE wearing their translation earpieces.
This confused at least one reporter enough to wonder if perhaps Trump knew how to speak Japanese.

This appears to be what Mike Pence's mind has done after six days as Donald Trump's running mate. In less than a week on the mogul's ticket, Pence has heard himself introduced to the song "You Can't Always Get What You Want," seen himself demeaned on national television, witnessed his party's convention derailed by an unfathomable plagiarism scandal, and had his RNC speech upstaged by a chaotic spectacle his campaign had every opportunity to avoid — all while having to continuously adapt himself to the whims of a volatile sociopath. It seems these pressures have proven too much for the Indiana governor to bear. On Thursday morning, a visibly psychotic Pence went on Fox & Friends and described a "Donald Trump" and "Republican National Convention" that only he can see. "What I hear from Donald Trump is that we’re going to stand strongly with our allies," Pence said Thursday, eyes wide and shimmering with madness.
You know when you get right down to it the only VP Trump could have picked, who would have survived the experience, is Sarah Palin.
After all she has been living in crazy town for many years now.
Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) had a tense confrontation with two Dreamers in Iowa that was captured on video and posted to YouTube on Monday.
The video's description identifies the pair as Erika Andiola and Cesar Vargas. In the video, Andiola approaches King and Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), telling them she's a Dreamer who's originally from Mexico but was raised in the United States and is a graduate of Arizona State University. (Paul quickly got up and left.)
"I know you want to get rid of DACA, so I want to give you the opportunity 'cause you really want to get rid of it, just rip mine," Andiola tells King as she hands him her identification card. "Go ahead and do that."
DACA, or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, exempts many undocumented immigrants who arrived as children from deportation for a renewable two-year period and allows them to work in the United States. King voted on Friday for a bill that would end the program.
"I just don't understand why you've been wanting to do that," Andiola says to King, who then stands up to confront the woman.
"You're very good at English," King says as he grabs Andiola's hand. "You know what I'm saying."
"I was raised in the United States," Andiola replies.
"Right, so you can understand the English language," King replies.
You know the only thing I found more striking than the condescending attitude that Rep. King uses (Why does he keep asking her if she understands English?), and his groping of the woman while trying to get her to stop talking, is how quickly Rand Paul makes a break for it.
At the 20 sec mark Paul jumps up like he is running out on the check and gets the hell out of Dodge before he can be asked any embarrassing questions on camera.
As someone sang yesterday, "Rand on the run, Rand on the run.....
I swear Palin looks like she would be any place else in the world rather than sitting on that couch with these people.
"Jesus how much longer do I have to pretend that I like these losers?"
And what is it with constantly talking about her son's "warrior body?" Is it just me, or is that extremely creepy?

Republican frontrunner Mitt Romney's much-heralded economic speech flopped Friday, overshadowed by a gaffe over luxury Cadillacs and his choice of an over-ambitious venue, the Detroit Lions' football field.
Romney opened himself up to derision for choosing a 70,000-seat stadium which attracted just over 1,000 people, many of them school children bussed in to help fill out the crowd, tucked into a corner of the astro-turf pitch.
The small crowd underlined again his inability to draw large numbers of supporters and to excite the conservative base.
Jesus, I saw more people than that stopped alongside of the road to watch a moose strip the bark off of a tree over near the high school. Though to be fair, a moose eating bark is MUCH more entertaining than anything Mitt Romney has to say.
And THIS my friends, is the man the Republicans are very, very slowly choosing to go up against our President.

Romney response calmly to Briar's first question was about the New Hampshire Union Leader's endorsement of supposed more consistent Newt Gingrich. But things get testier from there. "Your critics change you make decision based on political expediency and not on core conviction," asked Baier, going on to list climate change, abortion, immigration, gay rights as some of his flip-flops.
"Well Bret your list is just not accurate. One, we're going to have to be better informed about my views on issues. My view is, you can look at what I've written in my book." (I wonder WHICH book he means by the way? The original hard cover, or the paperback version that he had edited to suck up to the Teabaggers?)
The tension escalates when Baier brings up the many ads out there juxtaposing clips of Romney's positions change.
ROMNEY: "I'm glad the Democratic ads are breaking through, and you guys at Fox are seeing them." BAIER: "Jon Huntsman has a couple ads that do the exact same thing." ROMNEY: "And there's no question people are going to take snippets, take things out of context, and show there are differences when in some cases there are not."
Later, after Baier asks Romney about his evolving position on a mandate-based healthcare system:
ROMNEY: "Bret, I don't know how many times I've said this too. This is an unusual interview. Hahaha. All right, let's do it again. Absolutely, what we did in Massachusetts was right for Massachusetts..." BAIER: "But Governor, you did say on camera and in other places at times that you thought it would be a model for the entire nation." ROMNEY: You're wrong Bret. No, you're wrong. The tape out there -- continue to read the tape -- the tape goes on the say for each state to be able to look at it."
During that last exchange, Romney crossed legs and shifted his weight while laughing awkwardly to defuse the tension with Baier. It was a minor episode of physical discomforted that echoed the way Romney touched Perry's shoulder during an October GOP debate, seemingly again to calm him down.

In his defense I believe that Romney sensed a little dissatisfaction coming from Brier, who like many conservatives is undoubtedly frustrated that this flip flopping dime store mannequin is about to become the GOP nominee. However it was on Mittens to step up to the plate and deliver, and instead he whiffed it.
Once again let me reiterate that in the ENTIRE Republican field THIS is the best they could come up with to face off against a President who THEY THEMSELVES have identified as badly wounded and ripe for defeat.
The entire field seemed to have been put together by only those with a product to sell like Gingrich and Cain. Those who were too stupid to realize they were in over their heads, like Bachmann, Perry, Santorum, and Pawlenty, And those who have it in their DNA to run every single election cycle, like Paul and Romney. (I have NO idea what Huntsman's deal is.)
At this point the Republicans must be in a blind panic and desperate enough to do just about ANYTHING to shake things up.
Okay, well certainly not THAT desperate, but close.
