Something to keep in mind.

We busted our asses to put those net neutrality protections in place, and now we need to get off our asses in order to protect what we accomplished.

Sarah Palin cranky that she had to stand during HER VP debate.

Actually Palin kind of makes a good point as the only other female VP candidate, Geraldine Ferraro, ALSO had to stand during her debate in 1984.

However I would remind Palin that she was not the only one to stand during that 2008 VP debate.

And Biden was twenty years her senior, so imagine how hard that was on his old man legs.

Having said that I think we all know that the most likely reason for Palin and Biden being forced to stand during the debate was because Palin had essentially run on her youth and attractiveness so the network realized that more viewers would tune in to get a look at her ass than they would to hear that screechy voice of hers.

I think the one to feel sorry for here is Joe.

Atheist group is taking IRS to court to challenge the tax exempt status of religious organizations. Happy Holidays!

Courtesy of The New Civil Rights Movement:

American Atheists and other secular groups are taking the IRS to court over what they say is the preferential treatment the tax-collection agency gives to religious organizations.

Studies show that Americans subsidize religious organizations to the tune of an estimated $71 billion annually, in the form of tax-exemptions. “This is about equality,” American Atheists President David Silverman said in a statement.

“This is about the U.S. government holding everyone to the same standard and giving the same rights to all. No exceptions. We are seeing religions getting preferential treatment by our government, a government that is supposed to serve us and respect us all as equals, and that’s wrong. It’s not what this country is about and it’s unpatriotic.”

Dave Muscato, a spokesman for American Atheists, told Newsweek, “We find it discriminatory, so we’re suing. The way that this is set up, we all pay for it. We’re all supporting churches for what they do.”

Because religious organizations are automatically granted a tax-exempt status and are not required to file forms that non-religious organizations must, American Atheists claim secular groups are unfairly burdened, while religious organizations have a fundraising advantage that includes not having to reveal their donors.

I know I am looking at this from a very prejudicial angle, but you have to admit American Atheists have a point.

It is unfair to ask nonmembers of a religious organization to subsidize churches through their tax dollars, when often the churches themselves have money to burn.

Churches should pay their fair share, ESPECIALLY if they are going to dabble in politics, which is increasingly the case these days.  Not only that, but I think that the new Pope would agree with me on this topic.

Italy to strip churches of their tax exempt status. Seriously?

Courtesy of the Telegraph:

The Church currently pays tax on several properties it owns that are commercial enterprises but is exempt if at least some of the activities on the property are "non-commercial" - for example a chapel in a hotel.

"The regulatory framework will be definite by January 1, 2013 - the start of the fiscal year - and will fully respect the (European) Community law," Prime Minister Mario Monti's government said in a statement late Tuesday.

In February, the government had amended Italy's property tax law to end the Church's privileges amid rising calls for the Vatican to share in debt crisis sacrifices and in the face of intense scrutiny from the European Commission.

On Monday the Council of State, Italy's highest ranking court for administrative litigation, rejected the decree. But the government insisted everyone would pay property tax, Church included.

Way to go Italy!

I literally dream of the day when the churches in America are stripped of their tax exempt status and made to pay their fair share to support the services, like street repair, police support, and firefighters, which they currently enjoy for free.

By the way taxing the churches would bring in an additional 71 billion annually and essentially pay down this country's debts in no time at all. Just think about that for awhile.
