Just when the country is being threatened by a megalomaniac super villain, Batman dies!

Courtesy of the Hollywood Reporter:

Adam West, the ardent actor who managed to keep his tongue in cheek while wearing the iconic cowl of the Caped Crusader on the classic 1960s series Batman, has died. He was 88.

West, who was at the pinnacle of pop culture after Batman debuted in January 1966, only to see his career fall victim to typecasting after the ABC show flamed out, died Friday night in Los Angeles after a short battle with leukemia, a family spokesperson said.

West died peacefully surrounded by his family and is survived by his wife Marcelle, six children, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Adam West was the Batman of my youth, and even though I fully appreciated Keaton and Bale, I always had a soft spot for the campy 1960's television show.

That was back in the days when television violence could be somewhat censored by an image like this flashing on the screen.

Good times.

Lately the Adam West Batman meme has popped up in all kinds of places including anti-Trump rallies.

Oh yeah, I would have paid Adam West a pile of cash to play that out in real life.

Well I for one am sad to see the passing of an icon.

He will be missed.

However fear not because there is a new generation of heroes to take his place.
After all children do need heroes, perhaps today more than ever.

On Friday night's Real Time Bill Maher calls out Republicans over their terrible choice in heroes.

Courtesy of Politicususa:

Maher asked Republicans, “If these better than the rest of us real Americans really do exist, how come when they find one, they turn out to be a creep? Either you’re a terrible judge of character, or there’s nobody home at the good people house.”

The Real Time host ran down the list. Kim Davis turns out to be everything Republicans hate. Cliven Bundy is a racist. George Zimmerman is an angry racist who keeps getting in trouble with the police. Joe The Plumber was a totally fabricated lie.

Of course Maher saved his most scathing remarks for sister molester and Ashley Madison customer Josh Duggar:

"Josh traded on his family’s image to work as a lobbyist for the ultra-conservative Family Research Council, and all of the Republican presidential candidates wanted a picture with him. Until it turned out, he had two Ashley Madison accounts, had paid for rough sex with porn stars and had molested his sisters."

Of course to that list we could also add the tragically stupid Sarah Palin, the Blinded by the Bible Ben Carson, and of course the incredibly ego-maniacal Donald Trump.

In fact one would be hard pressed to think of a single conservative icon who was not completely phony, as well as a tragically flawed human being.

Yes and to that list I would also add Republican hero Ronald Reagan. Who not only raised taxes, and granted amnesty to millions of undocumented immigrants, but also resided over one of the most corrupt administrations in recent memory.

Hypocritical outrage image of the day.

Remember kids, you can only crap on military heroes, when they are Democratic military heroes.

Monday, July 20, 2015

Jeb Bush is outraged (Outraged I say!) over Donald Trump's disrespect for John McCain's military service. Seemed less so when it was John Kerry being disrespected.

So as you can see Jebbie is livid that "The Donald" would suggest that John McCain should not be considered a hero because he was a POW during the Vietnam War.

And that should be admirable.

Except for the fact that Jebbie sent this letter to the men calling into question the heroism that earned John Kerry's a Silver Star during the same war.

So to be clear, it is outrageous that people would dismiss John McCain's heroism over the fact that he was captured by the enemy, but suggesting that John Kerry did not earn his medals while fighting for his country is perfectly reasonable.

Did I get that right?

You know there are days when I miss this man more than others. Today is one of them.

You know I would like to see a law passed that forced Congress to watch an hour of Mr. Rogers a day before they were allowed to write or vote on any legislative bill.

Navy Seal caught smuggling 10 kilos of cocaine into the country.

Courtesy of Buzzfeed:

A Navy SEAL who served in the military for 14 years and worked on covert anti-drug operations has admitted to smuggling 10 kilos of cocaine into the United States, according to records from the federal district court in Miami and a source familiar with his service.

The SEAL, Angel Martinez-Ramos, left active duty in 2010 but continued to deploy on missions as a reservist, court papers say. He had drug paraphernalia, including a money-counting machine and drug-testing equipment, at home, the documents say. He pleaded guilty to conspiracy to import cocaine and is currently in custody in Miami awaiting sentencing.

His case comes in the wake of another embarrassment for the elite SEALs, the commandos famous for killing Osama bin Laden. Earlier this year, two former members of the group died after consuming heroin and alcohol on a commercial ship they had been hired to protect from pirates.

I want to make it clear that this post should in no way be perceived as anti-military in any way.

However I think it is important to remind people that the current deifying of our men and women in the armed services needs to stop.

Many of those in our fighting forces are exemplary and honest human beings, who courageously put their lives on the line to protect American interests overseas. Not our freedom, but our interests.

It must be remembered however that some of these guys are simply average men doing a very challenging job, who may or may not have the highest ethical or moral standards. As we have seen all too often.

Whenever we put any group of people on a pedestal, like the Right Wing so often does with our military, we risk not paying critical enough attention to who they are, and what they do.

Don't forget that these are individuals who travel to a foreign land and kill citizens of that land when ordered to do so, without ever knowing for sure if they are innocent, guilty, or simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Sadly we need people like this in the world, but we should always remember that a job like that requires a certain ability to suspend their empathetic natures, a skill that some pick up over time, and which some never had holding them back in the first place.

When George Takei teams up with Patrick Stewart that is powerful force for good.

By the way if you have not been following Patrick Stewart on Twitter you are really missing out.

Of course the same holds true for George Takei.

Newly unearthed photo of heroic teacher and her class reminds us that there are some for whom there will NEVER be another Christmas.

Courtesy of Mediaite:

The photo shows a smiling Soto along with her full class and another Newton victim, teacher Anne Marie Murphy. The photo was taken last fall. Soto, 27, was killed trying to protect her class from the gunman, hiding them in cabinets and a classroom closet to save them from the eyes of Adam Lanza. When he came into her classroom, she told him her children were in the gym.

Murphy is another hero: she was found with her arms around one of the slain children.

The photo also includes victims Dylan Hockley, Allison Wyatt, Jesse Lewis, Avielle Richman, all 6 years old.

I know that it is the holiday and that all of us want to think about spending time with our families and forgetting the troubled year that it is now coming to a close, however I also believe that it is important that we not allow the passage of time, and the distractions of the holidays, make us forget the tragedy that happened just ten days ago.

THAT is what the NRA and their conservative supporters are hoping for. If they can just keep politicians from doing anything of substance in the next few weeks they hope that this whole thing will just blow over with no gun control laws on the books.

And to that end they are also working double time to divert attention away from the easy access of guns in this country to Adam Lanza's mental health.

One of the phrases I have heard repeated by any number of Republican surrogates is that Adam Lanza's mental illness was well known, But NO, no it wasn't. In fact it is STILL not known what his exact diagnosis might have been.

And if it turns out that Adam did indeed have Asperger's Syndrome then we still know NOTHING about why he killed his mother and murdered those babies in that school.

I have worked with a number of children diagnosed with Aspergers and let me tell you that they may be the least violent group I have ever had to deal with. They are often quiet, painfully introverted, and socially inept, but NOT violent in most cases.

And here let me lay a little more knowledge on you. Just because a child is properly diagnosed with a mental illness of some kind, and receiving treatment, that is NO guarantee that they will not self harm, or harm others.

However it is ABSOLUTELY true that without  access to his mother's arsenal Adam Lanza would have remained relatively harmless. Or at the very least incapable of taking so many lives with such impunity.

So let us not be distracted from the real issue, which is that access to military style weapons designed for the sole purpose of killing human beings is far too easy in this country, and that so long as people who should never have access to them, get access to them, we will continue to see these kinds of massacres for years to come.

Despite the constant barrage of attacks coming from the Right Wing, and indefensible demands placed on their profession, Connecticut teachers show the world the true face of heroism.

Courtesy of Nation of Change:

I’ll be brief here. Let’s just note that the heroic teachers who died while courageously trying to protect their kids at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT, and the others who survived but stayed to protect the kids, were all part of a school system where the employees are members of the American Federation of Teachers.

Let’s just let that sink in for a moment. Those teachers, who are routinely being accused by our politicians of being drones and selfish, incompetent money grubbers worried more about their pensions than about teaching our children (though most, even after 10 years, earn less than $55,000 a year for doing a very difficult job that involves at least 12-14 hours a day of work and prep time counting meetings with parents), stood their ground when confronted with a psychotic assailant armed with semi-automatic pistols and an automatic rifle, and protected their kids. The principal too, a veteran teacher herself, stood her ground, reportedly suicidally charging at the assailant along with the school’s psychologist in a doomed effort to tackle him and stop the carnage.

How many of us would have had to the courage to stand in front of a closet door to keep an armed madman from finding the kids hidden behind it, as one slain teacher died doing? How many of us would charge at an armed shooter, to almost certain death, in an effort top stop him from further killing? How many would bravely hide in a bathroom with a class of kids when we could have run away and saved ourselves?

And this: How many of the politicians in Washington and in state capitals and how many conservative think-tank “researchers” who attack teachers as leeches and drones would have shown such heroism under fire?

My guess is damned few -- if any. Yet it appears from the news reports that not one teacher in that unionized school fled the scene and abandoned the children to their fate. They all stuck with their kids. So did the custodian -- no doubt a unionized worker earning poverty wages -- who ran through the building warning everyone of the attacker’s presence.

The news coming out of Newtown, Connecticut on December 14, was some of the most shocking I had ever heard. Yet there was one piece of information that I was expecting to hear even before it was reported, that the teachers had placed themselves in harms way to protect their children, and that many had lost their lives.

To be honest I would have been shocked to have heard otherwise.

As many of you could not help but know, I have become almost apoplectic in my frustration at the way the Right Wing has vilified teachers and their unions, and have come to their defense over and over again.

You see I did not need a school shooting to open my eyes to the kind of sacrifice that teachers make on behalf of their students each and every day. I have witnessed it first hand.

I have seen public school teachers spend their own money to purchase school supplies for a needy child, or pay for a lunch that the little girl or boy's mother forgot to pack that day. In the public school system those people are not considered heroes, they are considered teachers, and nobody expects less from them.

In this terrible tragedy these often maligned teachers did not hesitate to act, and repeatedly placed themselves in harm's way to protect their children.

From the principal and school psychologist who lost their lives trying to stop Adam Lanza from entering the school, to Vicki Soto who used her own body to block bullets while some of her children hid in a closet and others ran past the shooter, to the brave first grade teacher who whispered to her children that she loved them so that those would be the last words they would hear if the worst came to pass ("I need you to know that I love you all very much," Ms Roig said."I thought that was going to be the last thing they were ever gonna to hear. I thought we were all gonna die."), these are the caliber of people who spend their lives in classrooms all across the country educating our children.

You mark my words, and take them to heart, no matter WHERE this shooting had taken place in this country, the stories of heroism by these often vilified professionals would have been almost identical.

Teachers are not sitting in their classrooms for a paycheck.

They are not staying hours after the last bell sounds to further their careers.

They are there because they know they are needed. They are are there for their students. They are there because they cannot imagine being anyplace else.

And if something, or someone, threatens the children that they have grown to love so dearly, they will not hesitate to put the safety of their students above their own.

Heroes? You're goddamn right they're heroes!

But they are heroes EVERY single day. It just so happened that the terrible incident at Sandy Hook gave the country the opportunity to see that for themselves.

And hopefully it is something they won't soon forget it.

Sure in Alaska our ex-half term Governor was a moron, and the majority of our politicians are whores for big business, but dammit our dogs are heroes!

From Huffington Post:

Anchorage Alaska-The video on the troopers' website shows the German shepherd running to meet the trooper's vehicle, then racing to the house on Caswell Lakes on April 4.

Troopers say Buddy and his owner, 23-year-old Ben Heinrichs, were in the family workshop when a heater ignited chemicals. Heinrichs told Buddy: "We need to get help.

The dog eventually found a trooper responding to a call about the fire.

Now THAT is an anmial who earned an extra doggy treat or two.
