Conservative media upset that comic book hero Superman does not support white supremacists.

Courtesy of Vox:

The latest issue of Action Comics No. 987 contains a scalding scene: A white supremacist, fed up with a company that just laid him off, decides to load up his machine gun and kill the undocumented workers he believes took his job. Luckily, in the nick of time, Superman arrives to shield the would-be victims from a storm of bullets.

Given the violent events that took place in Charlottesville, Virginia, last month, including a domestic terror attack that killed Heather Heyer, as well as the recent national conversation over the Trump administration’s stance on DACA, it’s easy to see how the plot of Action Comics No. 987 could feel like a knee-jerk reaction and parallel to reality. But in reality, comic book issues and arcs — including this one, which was written by Dan Jurgens and illustrated by artists Viktor Bogdanovic, inkers Jonathan Glapion and Jay Leisten, and colorist Mike Spicer — are planned well in advance.

Still, the action of preventing a mass murder, which seems in line with Superman’s moral compass, hasn’t come without controversy. Fox News has a column calling the Man of Steel a “propaganda tool for the defenders of illegal aliens,” and the right-wing website Breitbart derided him as “Social Justice Supes.”

Their argument is that comic book writers and artists have inserted a pro–illegal immigrant agenda into their comics, and that it’s part of a larger trend of politicizing comic books.

If these folks would go back and read their old Superman comics they would realize that the man from Krypton has always protected the downtrodden, and even though a number of white supremacist groups have identified the Man of Steel as the very image of the white superior race, the fact is that since he landed on earth from a completely different planet, and never legally became an American citizen, he is in fact the ultimate illegal alien.

He has also stood up for the social equality since at least the 1950's.

It appears that the White Supremacists need to find themselves a new hero.

This one is a little busy.

Just when the country is being threatened by a megalomaniac super villain, Batman dies!

Courtesy of the Hollywood Reporter:

Adam West, the ardent actor who managed to keep his tongue in cheek while wearing the iconic cowl of the Caped Crusader on the classic 1960s series Batman, has died. He was 88.

West, who was at the pinnacle of pop culture after Batman debuted in January 1966, only to see his career fall victim to typecasting after the ABC show flamed out, died Friday night in Los Angeles after a short battle with leukemia, a family spokesperson said.

West died peacefully surrounded by his family and is survived by his wife Marcelle, six children, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Adam West was the Batman of my youth, and even though I fully appreciated Keaton and Bale, I always had a soft spot for the campy 1960's television show.

That was back in the days when television violence could be somewhat censored by an image like this flashing on the screen.

Good times.

Lately the Adam West Batman meme has popped up in all kinds of places including anti-Trump rallies.

Oh yeah, I would have paid Adam West a pile of cash to play that out in real life.

Well I for one am sad to see the passing of an icon.

He will be missed.

However fear not because there is a new generation of heroes to take his place.
After all children do need heroes, perhaps today more than ever.

Donald Trump attends costume party themed "Villians and Heroes" and dresses like himself. Seems right.

Courtesy of the New York Daily News:

President-elect Donald Trump played the role of party pooper-in-chief at a swanky Saturday night costume soirĂ©e in Long Island themed “Villains and Heroes.”

Trump showed up at the ultra-exclusive fiesta thrown by hedge fund manager Robert Mercer in a staid dark suit and checked tie.

On his way into Mercer’s lavish Suffolk County estate, Trump was asked who he was dressed up as.

The Republican hero pointed to himself and mouthed “me.”

I don't see how this makes Trump a "party pooper." After all when you are in fact a real life comic book supervillain why would you need to wear the costume of another comic book supervillain?

It's actually Kellyanne Conway's costume that I find ridiculous.

After all, Supergirl is a young fit superheroine from another planet sent to rescue earth from dangerous aliens and villains determined to destroy it.

On the other hand, Kellyanne is an opportunistic political operative who just helped place a dangerous villain in a position to succeed in destroying this planet.

Nothing heroic or super about that.

American comic book icon Archie Andrews sacrifices his life to protect his gay friend. Update!

Courtesy of ABC News:

Archie Andrews will die taking a bullet for his gay best friend.

The famous freckle-faced comic book icon is meeting his demise in Wednesday's installment of "Life with Archie" when he intervenes in an assassination attempt on Kevin Keller, Archie Comics' first openly gay character. Andrews' death, which was first announced in April, will mark the conclusion of the series that focuses on grown-up renditions of Andrews and his Riverdale pals.

"The way in which Archie dies is everything that you would expect of Archie," said Jon Goldwater, Archie Comics publisher and co-CEO. "He dies heroically. He dies selflessly. He dies in the manner that epitomizes not only the best of Riverdale but the best of all of us. It's what Archie has come to represent over the past almost 75 years."

"We wanted to do something that was impactful that would really resonate with the world and bring home just how important Archie is to everyone," said Goldwater. "That's how we came up with the storyline of saving Kevin. He could have saved Betty. He could have saved Veronica. We get that, but metaphorically, by saving Kevin, a new Riverdale is born."

This may seem trivial to some, and of no importance in the real world, but I beg to differ.

Archie comics have been around for several generations.

My mother loved Archie comic books.

I loved Archie comic books.

And my daughter loved Archie comic books.

To have such an iconic figure die is huge. And to have him die literally defending a member of a group who are constantly under attack by a certain segment of the population is incredibly powerful.

There have recently been a slew of comic book characters who have come out as gay, however that will undoubtedly pale in comparison to such an established character literally sacrificing his life to stand up to homophobia and intolerance.

Update: You know I was so focused on the LGBT part of this "death" that I totally forgot that it happens due to gun violence as well.

Damn is this going to have conservative heads asploding all over the place.
