In a closely watched, first-of-its-kind municipal election, voters in New Mexico's largest city have defeated a proposed ban on late-term abortions.
Voters in Albuquerque on Tuesday rejected the measure 55 to 45 percent, following an emotional and graphic campaign that brought in national groups and hundreds of thousands of dollars in advertising. The campaign included protests that compared abortion to the Holocaust and displayed pictures of aborted fetuses.
A coalition of groups, including the American Civil Liberties Union of New Mexico and Planned Parenthood, called the results a huge victory for Albuquerque women and families.
"Albuquerque families sent a powerful message today — they do not want the government interfering in their private medical decisions," Micaela Cadena, of the Respect ABQ Women campaign, said in a statement.
"Dangerous, unconstitutional laws like the one we rejected today have no place in Albuquerque, no place in New Mexico, no place anywhere in our nation," she added.
This is great news!
I have to admit that I was worried that this law was going to pass and that it would set a precedent for a number of southern cities to follow suit.
But damn if logic, common sense, and rational thinking didn't save the day again.
Morality is not determined by the church you attend nor the faith you embrace. It is determined by the quality of your character and the positive impact you have on those you meet along your journey

Action Alert for Anchorage voters. (And ONLY Anchorage voters.)
Courtesy of Bent Alaska:
ANCHORAGE VOTERS: The April 3 election is supposed to be certified at the April 17 Assembly meeting. But it should not be certified until an complete & independent investigation of election irregularities takes place. EVERYONE WHO CAN come to tonight’s and next Tuesday’s Assembly meetings. Loussac Library (36th & Denali), Tuesdays, April 10 & 17, 5-11 PM. Wear red, white & blue and/or American flag pins for the people who have fought and died for your right to vote. Even if you can’t make it to these Assembly meetings, write to your Assembly members and demand a through and complete independent investigation. Contact them all at wwmas@muni.org or individually here.
There were numerous incidents in the last election, which featured the controversial Proposition 5, that have raised red flags with voters.
Here are a few courtesy of Mudflats:
– There are reports of voters never receiving their absentee ballots, even though they applied for them well within the time frame.
– There are persistent rumors of a bus or busses coming from the Valley carrying people to the polls. Further investigation is required.
– There are persistent rumors from voters and poll workers recognizing folks as Valley residents who registered in Anchorage for this election. Again, a full investigation is required to determine if that is the case and if so, how many precincts are involved.
– To date, we have been given no proof that the Muni was in possession of the required number of ballots…just their word. Where are the photographs of these stacks of unused ballots?
Did you get that part about Vally folks possibly being bussed in to hijack this election? Sounds like a possibly repeat of the 2009 Summer of Hate to me.
If true this is the last straw as far as I am concerned with these ignorant fundies coming into our city and interfering with our attempts to protect the rights of our citizens.
After all do we go out to the Valley and tell them that it's not okay to stump train their livestock, or that opening a can of peaches with a shotgun is stupid, or not to teach their children that the earth is six thousand years old and that listening to NPR will turn them gay? No we don't.
Yet they feel perfectly within their rights to come into our town, or as they call it, "The place where we can poop INDOORS," and vote in our elections. Fuck that!
And that is only the tip of the voter fraud iceberg. If you can take it there are some truly unbelievably stomach turning details at the link to Mudflats and Bent Alaska.
So please Anchorage, take the time to contact your Representatives and tell them how you feel, and then if you have the time make an appearance this evening at the Loussac Library and raise a little hell. If we don't start fighting for the right to have our votes count, then only those who game the system will ever have a voice in our city, as well as in our state.
And I for one am goddamn sick and tired of it.
(I apologize to the many VERY reasonable citizens living in the Valley, I know it is not your fault that some of your neighbors are making you look bad. Trust me I feel the same every time I see that idiot from Wasilla on national television, and realize that the rest of the world is judging Alaska based on her ignorance.)
