Creationist Ken Ham does not think that Bill Nye's show about real facts is appropriate for children. Because you know superstitious fairy tales are so much more palatable.

Courtesy of Science AF:

Creationist Ken Ham loves to challenge Bill Nye on every scientific issue under the sun, and the release of Bill Nye Saves the World season two was too great an opportunity to miss.

In a blog post for his website Answers in Genesis, the famous creationist accused the Science Guy's new show of being "inappropriate" for children.

"Bill Nye is not kid friendly at all (this new show is geared toward millennials), and both seasons of this show's content (which pushes a secular view of origins and morality) are certainly not appropriate for children," Ham wrote, proposing that the show should really be called "Bill Nye Needs to be Saved."

"He is definitely not Bill Nye the kid-friendly guy! Beware!"

Apparently, the promotion of basic scientific facts is now considered inappropriate.

Apparently Ham is upset about Nye's descriptive language when discussing STD's and superbugs, and argues that his show is too secular in nature.

Does Ham not realize that science by its very nature is "secular?"

No, I guess he wouldn't.

So in Ken Ham's version of educating children you simply fill their head with superstitious nonsense and then threaten them with eternal torment if they refuse to believe you, and Bill Nye's approach is to present actual fact based information in a fun and entertaining manner.

Got it.

House Republican to bring Bill Nye "The Science Guy" to Trump's State of the Union Address.

Courtesy of The Hill:

Celebrated children's TV show host and outspoken environmentalist Bill Nye "The Science Guy" will attend this year's State of the Union address in Washington, D.C., as guest of GOP Rep. Jim Bridenstine of Oklahoma.

“Bill Nye has been inspiring countless young people to enter the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math since before we used STEM as an acronym. Our country needs these disciplines now more than ever," Bridenstine said in a statement.

Nye has been an outspoken critic of the Trump administration, calling it the "anti-science movement."

It should also be noted that Bridenstine is Trump's pick to head NASA, though he ha not yet been confirmed. So doing this seems kind of like a big middle finger to Donald Trump.

I have already decided that I am going to boycott the speech personally, but I will be closely following it on Twitter, because the idea of Trump giving this speech in front of an audience with multiple sexual abuse survivors and Bill Nye in attendance just seems like it could make for some high comedy.

Bill Nye joins with Netflix to dispel myths, refute anti-scientific claims, and attempt to educate the ignorant. Good luck.

Courtesy of Inverse:

History is full of iconic, distinguished men and women of science, but there’s only one Science Guy. Bill Nye was a smart, quirky, and memorable science ambassador for a generation of PBS-watching millennials, and fans were delighted to learn that his signature bowtie would be coming back to screens in 2017 for a new Netflix show, Bill Nye Saves the World. Of course, that was before Donald Trump — about as anti-science as a politician can get — won the presidency. Now, with truth and the fate of the planet seemingly on the line, the title of Nye’s show seems a little more urgent.

Netflix announced Nye’s show in late August, before Trump’s stunning upset in the election, but from what we know about it, Netflix seems to be eerily prescient. “Each episode will tackle a topic from a scientific point of view, dispelling myths, and refuting anti-scientific claims that may be espoused by politicians, religious leaders or titans of industry,” a Netflix press release explains. Nye has said that he wants the new show to be entertaining, sure, but he really wants to educate and, if possible, change minds.

“We’ll discuss the complex scientific issues facing us today, with episodes on vaccinations, genetically modified foods and climate change,” Nye said in a statement. “With the right science and good writing, we’ll do our best to enlighten and entertain our audience. And, perhaps we’ll change the world a little.”

All I can say is that Nye really has his work cut out for him.

I mean I always knew that a large swath of the American public was as dumb as a box of rocks, but that was before over sixty tow million of them voted for Donald Trump.

Now I worry that just about every other person I see might be about to simply wander out into traffic or poke their eye out with a pair of scissors.

Good luck science guy. You are going to need it.

Creationist Ken Ham is really upset that Bill Nye is indoctrinating young children....with actual science.

Courtesy of The Friendly Atheist:

Nye said in a recent interview that teaching Creationism may be legal, but it’s a form of brainwashing. Referring to Ham, he said, “He can believe whatever he wants. He can run around influencing all the adults he wants; it’s the kids that are gonna be a burden on me. They’re gonna be scientifically illiterate…”

Ham, as usual, took that to mean Nye wants to take away his rights, somehow, and that teaching evolution was just pushing a different religion onto children.

Here is what Ham tweeted in response:

You know I imagine it is really hard from somebody as criminally ignorant as ken Ham to understand, but teaching children facts is not indoctrination.

It's education.

Bill Nye brilliantly calls climate science denier's bluff.

Courtesy of Raw Story:

Late last year, Bastardi accused Nye of taking on “increasingly shrill tones” regarding climate change since the two debated the issue on Fox News in 2010.

He also accused Nye of trying to “isolate, demonize and destroy” anyone who disagreed with him, comparing him to Saul Alinsky, the community organizer who is a preferred target for conservatives. Bastardi challenged Nye to explain what he called the lack of a connection between global temperatures and carbon dioxide levels, as well as a decline in temperatures following an El NiƱo weather event in 2006-2007.

Finally, he dared Nye to give his own forecast for global temperatures by 2020.

This was Nye's response. And it's a good one.

Essentially he is calling this Bastardi (What an unfortunate name.) guy out, and using a $10,000 (I'm sorry, $20,000) bet to drive that point home.

Of course the problem with this is that these climate change deniers do not trust traditional scientific data on the climate, and will instead offer their own "facts" to refute any findings that prove them wrong.

However for the public at large this will show Bastardi and his ilk are selling snake oil to their followers, and when called out publicly will dodge and weave in order to avoid admitting they are full of shit.

Damn Sarah Palin is simply not going to let this Bill Nye thing go!

Palin's Facebook post links to a Salon article written on February 14th, 2014 about a then upcoming debate between Nye and the climate science denying Congresswoman Marsha Blackburn on Meet the Press.

The point of the article was that MTP was being lazy in not getting an ACTUAL climate scientist to come on debate Blackburn who is, insanely enough, the Vice Chair of the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

However if Palin had bothered to read the article more carefully she might have noticed this portion:

But Bill Nye is not actually a climate scientist. He is a former mechanical engineer turned television entertainer, and now professional edu-tainer. He’s clearly well-informed on the subject of climate science, and he has done quite a lot to popularize and explain the research. Against very well-funded opponents, he has long been a prominent voice for scientific literacy. I have no doubt that Bill Nye could out-debate Marsha Blackburn — or indeed pretty much any Republican elected official — on the subject of humanity’s responsibility for climate change and its probably catastrophic effects. What’s insulting (and insane) is that there is to be a “debate” at all, on one of America’s supposed premier news talk shows.

What’s scary is that the side of this debate that is wrong, and that is wrong in a way that will very probably lead to worldwide disaster in a few generations, is taken seriously because it is the side taken by one of America’s two dominant political parties.

In other words Salon in no way is suggesting that Nye is ill equipped to debate Blackburn on this topic, but rather lamenting the fact that news programs such as Meet the Press are still acting as if there is a debate left to have on the subject.

However those are simply facts and in the world occupied by the likes of Marsha Blackburn and Sarah Palin, facts are not allowed.

Sarah Palin has her fake daughter defend her on the internet again.

Of course the humorous part is that Bristol did not write a word of the post that Palin links to.

In fact it is most likely that Nancy also wrote this Facebook post linking to her article.

I work in mental health, and that is literally one of the most psychotically convoluted things I have ever seen.

This is a person pretending to be Sarah Palin, linking to an article by the herself pretending to be Sarah Palin's daughter, in defense of the real Sarah Palin. (Assuming of course that Sarah Palin is in fact real.)

The thing is that French is correct in calling out the author of an article claiming that Palin was going to debate Bill Nye for lying.

However it was kind of funny that she linked to this article by the Friendly Atheist revealing that it was a lie, but also shaming the organizers of that climate change denying event for using Bill Nye's name to falsely drum up interest.

Speaking of psychotically convoluted.

NASA shuts down climate science deniers on Facebook.

Courtesy of IFL Science:

NASA’s comments came after Bill Nye posted a story about himself asking a prominent climate change denier to put his money where his mouth is. Nye, “the science guy,” offered two $20,000 bets to leading climate change denier Marc Morano, during an interview Morano himself had requested, that this year will be in the top 10 hottest years on record and this decade will also be the hottest on record. Alas, Morana declined the wagers.

Unsurprisingly, Nye posting the story to his Facebook page created a rumble and summoned the keyboard-wielding trolls to the comments section below the article. Perhaps after a late-night binge on YouTube conspiracy videos, many people accused NASA of being a leading voice in promoting the “scam” of man-made climate change by skewing figures and lying to the public about its data. A few commenters also wrongly cited, or just simply made up, some previous claims of NASA.

NASA also found it necessary to respond to this garbage.

Don't you hate it when facts screw up your conspiracy theories?

“Bill Nye is as much a scientist as I am." Sarah Palin attacks Bill Nye at climate change denying event.

Courtesy of The Hill:

Sarah Palin tore into Bill Nye’s scientific qualifications on Thursday, saying he has no authority to say climate skeptics are wrong.

Palin, the former governor of Alaska and the 2008 Republican vice presidential candidate, said the man known for his show "Bill Nye the Science Guy," is using his position of authority to harm children by teaching them that climate change is real and man-made.

“Bill Nye is as much as scientist as I am,” Palin said at a Capitol Hill event held to roll out a film that aims to discredit climate scientists. “He’s a kids’ show actor, he’s not a scientist.”

Palin said behind the “alarmism” that the climate is changing is a “predetermined” and political agenda “of those, I think, who are controlling the narrative right now on changes in the weather.”

She repeatedly dismissed climate change as changes in weather, and said scientists who believe the consensus that humans are the main cause of global warming are trying to shut down human progress.

Palin encouraged parents to teach their children to doubt climate change and to “ask those questions and not just believe what Bill Nye the Science Guy is trying to tell them.”

Do not just "believe what Bill Nye the Science Guy is telling them?"

Does she mean "Facts?"

These are not simply things that Bill Nye pulls out of his ass, like the majority of the things that vomit forth from Palin's gaping maw, he is backed up by the vast majority of climate scientists.

This from Think Progress:

Almost 16 years after Harvard researcher Naomi Oreskes first documented an overwhelming scientific consensus on climate change, a research team confirmed that 97 percent of climate scientists agree that human-caused climate change is happening.

The study, published Tuesday, brought together 16 scientists, including seven authors of consensus studies that documented similar conclusions over the years despite varying research approaches. While reaching this so-called “consensus on consensus,” authors concluded that scientific agreement on human-caused climate change is “robust” with a range of 90 to 100 percent, depending on the question and methodology.

So is Sarah Palin also just "as much of a scientist" as these researchers?

You know despite what some news outlets reported earlier, THIS was the plan all along.

And that was to have a dishonestly edited piece of tape showing Bill Nye in the worst light possible, and then have Sarah Palin, and others, mock and attack him.

IF they had possessed the guts to plan the event for a time when he was available, he would have easily mopped the floor with all of them.

Probably using that thing on Sarah Palin's head to do so.

Bill Nye explains that he was NEVER invited to participate in the climate change denying event with Sarah Palin.

Courtesy of Raw Story:

“Marc Morano did not invite me to his movie but he said I refused to come after he did invite me — he was making that up,” Nye said in a video posted on his Facebook page. “It’s disingenuous, at best.”

Morano’s organization, Climate Depot, originally said Nye would “appear” at the May 2 event, which will include a showing of the film Climate Hustle as well as a panel discussion that will include former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.

However, it was later reported that Nye will not be there; instead, the event — which is being simulcast in movie theaters around the US — will show clips of an interview Morano conducted with him. Nye said in his video that he agreed to speak to Morano on the condition that his own documentary crew be allowed to remain present.

You can see a portion of that exchange filmed by Nye's documentary crew at this link, and trust me it does not make this Marc Marano guy look like he has any idea what he is talking about.

We had mentioned before that all of the talk about a debate between Sarah Palin and Bill Nye was horse pucky but as it turns out so was any discussion about Nye lending the event any credibility by agreeing to participate.

This Marc Morano is a lying POS which I think helps to explain why Palin is supposedly the "headliner."

More on Sarah Palin's climate change denying gig in D.C.

Courtesy of Variety:

Fathom Events and SpectiCast are giving a major push to the anti-global warming documentary “Climate Hustle,” with plans for showings at nearly 400 theaters on May 2.

Variety has learned exclusively that former Alaska governor and vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin is participating in the event. The screening of the documentary, produced by Committee for a Constructive Tomorrow and Marc Morano’s ClimateDepot.com, will be followed by a panel discussion featuring Palin, with opening remarks by Rep. Lamar Smith (R-TX), chairman of the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology.

“I’m very passionate about this issue,” Palin told Variety. “We’ve been told by fearmongers that global warming is due to man’s activities and this presents strong arguments against that in a very relatable way.”

Palin noted that, while governor in 2008, she sued the U.S. government over placing the polar bear on the threatened species list because of the rapid decline in Arctic sea ice. Palin pointed to the high population of polar bears in 2008 and dismissed climate models that predict continued loss of sea ice as “unreliable,” “uncertain” and “unproven,” but a federal judge backed the government scientists’ finding in 2011.

“I wanted facts and real numbers,” Palin said. “The polar bear population is stable, if not growing and the designation would have stymied Alaska’s pursuit of developing its natural resources.”

Yes Sarah Palin is always "very passionate" about ignorance. (Alaska Dispatch reminds us that Palin accepted that climate change was real when she was Governor of Alaska.)

By the way speaking of "facts and real numbers" according to a study released in 2014 the polar bear population in the frozen sea north of Alaska has dropped 40% in ten years.

I just hope these people in Washington recognize that this idiot does NOT speak for the majority of Alaskans who not only recognize that man made climate change is real, but have been dealing with its disastrous effects for the last thirty plus years.

P.S. A lot of people, and news outlets, seem to be under the impression that Bill Nye is appearing on a panel and will debate Sarah Palin over climate change.

As much as I think people would pay big money to see that, that is not what is happening:

Variety reported that, according to a spokesperson for Nye, he was not invited to be on the panel. Instead, footage from an interview involving Nye will be shown.

Trust me none of the mental midgets participating in this farce would want to have Bill Nye there to  stick a pin in their climate change denying argument.

Bill Nye and Neil deGrasse Tyson just two smart people hanging out on the roof talking science.

Courtesy of the YouTube page:

"Dear Citizen of Planet Earth,"

That's how Carl Sagan addressed the public in an introductory letter about the Planetary Society back in the 1980s. Now Bill (CEO) and Neil (Board Member) reminisce about those days, talk about what we should call people from planet Earth, discuss how Neil's Cosmos TV show stressed Bill out, and tell us who will the first humans will be to orbit Mars.

You know sometimes I just post things because they make me smile.

This made me smile.

Watching these two great men "Nerding out" on that rooftop made me kind of wish I could have joined them.

Kinda reminded me of an episode of "The Big Bang Theory" actually.

If this is not a real quote it ought to be.

I saw this graphic the other day and I loved it.

However I have not yet been able to confirm that Nye said this, even though this image shows up at several places on the internet.

Oh well, like I said in my headline, if Bill Nye did not say this he certainly should.

Update: Okay I found the source. It is from an article ABOUT Bill Nye.

It appears that it is not a direct quote from Nye, but rather an opinion expressed by the author of the piece.

Still I think it is certainly something Bill Nye SHOULD say.

Bill Nye appears on Comedy Central to make an important point. (Video from Inside Amy Schumer so very NSFW.)

Now that was quite funny, and obviously quite crude, but it was also very on point.

It is a known fact that human sapiens are good at recognizing patterns, and identifying cause and effect, and that it played no small part in our intellectual development.

But what is also true is that we sometimes see patterns where they do not exist, and see a cause and effect that really only exists in our imaginations.

That is essentially the space that for many people is occupied by God, but for those who are less religious may play host to their idea of fate, or the karma, or, as in this skit, the universe.

And trust me people can be just as obnoxiously convinced that the universe is talking to them directly, as religious people are that God sent them a sign by having a bird poop an image of the Virgin Mary on their car window.

The simple truth is that what we often perceive in the world around us is completely subjective.

The trick is to remove the rose colored glasses and see the reality as it is, no matter how much that reality may terrify us at first.

Sure to believe that a god, or the universe itself, is watching out for us, or has our back, might be comforting. But it is also just this side of psychotic.

Just President Obama and Bill Nye discussing science in the Florida Everglades.

I actually found this exchange to be very enjoyable to watch.

The two men seem at ease with each other and have a natural rapport that comes across well in the video.

I liked it when the President called the Republicans out on their whole "I'm not a scientist" excuse.

"I'm not a scientist either, but I know a lot of scientists, I have the capacity to understand science, I have the capacity to look at facts and base my conclusions on evidence."

Excellent, and of course obvious, point.

I also could not help but notice that Nye was sweating like a prisoner in a Florida prison sweat box, while Obama looked cool and comfortable. (Must be from having grown up in Hawaii.)

As some of you might have read the conservatives decided to attack the President for wasting jet fuel to visit the Everglades on Earth Day.

This was Bill Nye's response to that:

When Nye tweeted about the trip, political conservatives made a giant fuss about the amount of energy the trip consumed, and, Nye says, attacked him pretty personally.

“That it uses a lot of fossil fuel for the president to move around is a necessary evil at this time,” Nye responds. “Earth Day is not ‘stay home from work’ day. It’s ‘let’s change the world’ day.”

It's kind of like watching intellectual fencing when one side has nothing but a limp noodle with which to parry and thrust.

Thursday, October 09, 2014

Apparently when Bill Nye gives a lecture, these are the people he mocks.

Clockwise from top left.

Ken Ham, President of Answers in Genesis, and the guy who runs the Creation Museum in Kentucky.

Roy Spencer, former NASA and current climate misinformer.

Marsha Blackburn, Republican Congresswoman and all around conservative tool.

James Inhofe, Oklahoma Senator and dedicated climate change denier.

And some failed reality TV star.

Watching this literally fills me with joy.

If we could only shed ourselves of our crippling insecurities, and shake off the chains of superstition, just imagine how much farther we would be down the path of understanding.

Everyday we should ask ourselves what we want to learn today.

And the answer should always come back "Everything."

Bill Nye dispels myths about poverty, health, and foreign aid.

Okay this is another contribution from my daughter, who is on a campaign to improve healthy eating, education, and get everybody using renewable energy.

Y'all don't stand a chance.

John Oliver finally provides the appropriate perspective on the Climate Change debate.

I love this.

They could do the same thing for the Evolution debate as well.

P.S. Okay I am going to include another video from John Oliver's new show that I am sure many of you have already seen, or at least heard about. I don't feel comfortable embedding the video since it contains full frontal nudity (And not the good kind either!), but it is still quite funny and if you are not easily offended you should get a kick out of it.

Click here to see for yourself.

And remember, I warned you.
