Tennessee man rapes wife. Tells her, "I am your husband. I can't rape you." Police disagree with that statement.

Courtesy of WMC Action News:

Police arrested a 27-year-old Memphis man after his wife said he attacked and raped her.

Memphis police said the man drove his wife to the back of a church parking lot. There, he accused her of cheating on him.

Officers said the man then held his wife down, choked, and raped her.

The woman said her husband told her, "I am your husband. I can't rape you. I can get it anytime I want."

The woman called police and after an examination at the rape crisis center, officers arrested her husband and charged him with aggravated rape and assault.

Fucking asshole!

Of course he probably believes he cannot rape his wife because he is listening to people like that guy who posted on the Christian website that husbands "should not tolerate refusal," and other upstanding religious leaders who claim that once married a woman belongs to her man, and must obey him just as she would obey God.

This is, of course, the same kind of thinking that allows religious extremists all over the world to brutalize women and claim that it is their right by virtue of their faith.

It's not.

Florida preacher brags about "male leadership" sign. "It's a man's world."

Courtesy of Raw Story:

During a March 29 sermon about leadership, which was recently highlighted by the Friendly Atheist blog and the Bad Preachers YouTube account, Pastor Bill Lytell of the Gospel Baptist Church told his congregation he was proud to have a “male leadership” sign outside the church because “this is a man’s world.”

Lytell said that after a 9-year-old boy found a gun in the church’s bathroom last month, he was happy that a local media outlet filmed the “male leadership” sign during its coverage of the incident.

“And that’s going to go out throughout the whole country. Do you know what we’d have had to pay to do something like that?” he remarked. “That was probably a hundred thousand dollar gift. I’m not going to thank the person that left the weapon, however.”

“Don’t you be ashamed you go to a church with male leadership,” Lytell said. “Every church that’s right with God oughta have a sign: ‘Male Leadership.’ Because that’s the only kind of leadership, both from Adam all the way to the last part of the Bible. It’s all been male. This is a man’s world!”

And that folks is why, according to the Fundamentalists, women cannot be expected to control their own reproductive organs.

After all, they're just womenfolk.

Pastor claims "it is a shame for women to speak in the church" and says "when it's learning time, it's quiet time" for women only.

Courtesy of Raw Story:

On Sunday, a pastor in Phoenix, Arizona implored his female congregants not to say “amen” in church.

Pastor Steven Anderson of the Faithful Word Baptist Church garnered national attention in 2009 when he told his followers that he prays for the death of President Barack Obama every night. After being contacted by the Secret Service, he insisted that he “didn’t say he wanted his parishioners to attack the president, he did say the country would benefit from Mr. Obama dying.”

Pastor Anderson first attempted to justify the silencing of women by quoting 1 Timothy 2:11, “[l]et the woman learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.”

He then asked the congregation to flip to 1 Corinthians 14, which says “[l]et your women keep silence in the churches, for it is not permitted unto them to speak, as it is commanded to be under obedience as also sayeth the law. And if they will learn anything, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is shameful for women to speak in the church.”

“Now obviously,” he continued, “before the service begins, there’s chatting and talking going on, that’s perfectly legitimate. When we all sing praises to God, of course the ladies should also lift up their voices.”

“But when it’s learning time,” Pastor Anderson said, hammering his lecturn, “it’s silence time.”

“So what it’s saying is that they,” the women, “are to learn in silence.” He then quoted 1 Corinthians 14 again, saying that “when the learning is going on, they are not permitted to speak. When the preaching of God’s word is taking place — and first of all, it’s not for a woman to be doing the preaching, and second of all, it’s not for women to be speaking.”

This guy might be the only one stupid enough to say this out loud, but you KNOW that a number of these fundamentalist assholes agree with him 100%.

I have said it before, but it bears repeating, that I will NEVER understand why so many women participate in a religion that was essentially established to oppress them and to keep them making babies, raising children, and doing housework.

Little doubt that this is the same mindset behind those much reviled purity balls

It isn't just Christianity.

Hey, if you can't control your woman, you just invent a god that can.

While all around the country being a Republican is falling out of favor, in Alaska they add one more.

Courtesy of KTUU:

West Anchorage Representative Lindsey Holmes announced Saturday that she changed her party registration from Democrat to Republican and has also joined the House Majority Caucus and will have a seat on the House Finance Committee.

In a news release, Rep. Holmes said “I’ve enjoyed a close working relationship with the Majority for many years and have found that we share a common vision for Alaska.”

“We have a large caucus with people representing every corner of the state, and with that diversity we often have different views and opinions on how we should approach the challenges facing Alaska,” House Majority Leader Lance Pruitt, R-Anchorage, said.

Okay so usually this might not seem like the biggest deal in the world, except that right now the Republicans control both the State Senate and  the House, and of course also have Governor Parnell in place in the executive position.

That gives the GOP almost carte blanche to do whatever they damn well please, and since Joe Miller's pals managed their coup of the Republican party it looks like the inmates are in charge of the nut house.

By the way there is also some very troubling talk of Senator Mark Begich switching parties as well. I very much hope that is not true, but if it is then I really worry for the future of this great state.
