So long as President Trump continues disgracing the Oval Office, thoughtful people will probe their own role in helping him get there.
Such appeared to be the motivation behind a mea culpa issued by CNN senior legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin on comedian Larry Wilmore’s “Black on the Air” podcast. In a discussion of presidential politics, Wilmore argued that Hillary Clinton, the Democratic presidential nominee in 2016, was the victim of a “coordinated attack” coming from Republicans. “Benghazi was … the expression of that attack. In fact, what’s his name, was it [former Rep. Jason] Chaffetz who actually kind of agreed that that’s what they were doing, was weakening her as a candidate.” (Wilmore may have been referring to Rep. Kevin McCarthy, who said in 2015, “Everybody thought Hillary Clinton was unbeatable, right? But we put together a Benghazi special committee, a select committee. What are her numbers today? Her numbers are dropping.”)
No question about the attack on Clinton, responded Toobin, citing “all that bogus stuff about the Clinton Foundation” — perhaps a reference to the Uranium One story or even to the pre-election reporting of Bret Baier — later withdrawn — that there would be an indictment relating to the foundation.
“And I hold myself somewhat responsible for that,” continued Toobin, a steady presence on CNN since 2002. “I think there was a lot of false equivalence in the 2016 campaign. That every time we said something, pointed out something about Donald Trump — whether it was his business interests, or grab ’em by the p–––y, we felt like, ‘Oh, we gotta, like, talk about — we gotta say something bad about Hillary.’ And I think it led to a sense of false equivalence that was misleading, and I regret my role in doing that.”
I would suggest that not only did reporters often suggest that the phony Clinton "scandals" were similar to the raging dumpster fire that represented the Trump campaign, but that they actually suggested that Hillary's "crimes" were potentially more egregious.
The coverage of Hillary's emails was insane.
So was the coverage of Benghazi, her fainting spell, and virtually everything she did which somebody could find reason to criticize.
In the meantime Trump was being accused of sexual assault, working with the Mafia, and colluding with the Russians to steal the election, and somehow those were seen as equivalent.
I hope that Jeffrey Toobin sets a precedent, and that soon we will hear apologies from a number of CNN, MSNBC, as well as network and print journalists for their part in attempting to even the playing field between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton.
There was nothing even about these two candidates, and the American people should have been informed of that fact.

Former British Prime Minister says that Trump's attack on the media, and use of term "fake news," is dangerous.
Courtesy of Politico:
Former British Prime Minister David Cameron called out Donald Trump’s attacks on the media, saying his use of term “fake news” was “dangerous.”
Giving Transparency International UK’s annual lecture in London on Wednesday evening, Cameron said attacks on journalists were “bad news for the fight against corruption.”
He then turned his attention to the U.S. president, saying: “When Donald Trump uses the term ‘fake news’ to describe CNN and the BBC, that is not just a questionable political tactic. It’s actually dangerous.”
“Of course broadcasters make mistakes and it’s right they correct them,” Cameron said. “But what is being attempted here goes far beyond that. It’s an attempt to question the whole legitimacy of organizations that have an important role in our democracy.
“Let me put it like this. President Trump: ‘Fake news’ is not broadcasters criticizing you, it’s Russian bots and trolls targeting your democracy … pumping out untrue stories day after day, night after night.”
This is how the world sees the current Commander-in-Chief, as a thin skinned buffoon.
And they are correct to do so.

Vladimir Putin steps in to defend his puppet. Oh THAT should help.
Courtesy of Newsweek:
Russian President Vladimir Putin has called on U.S. citizens to stop disrespecting President Donald Trump, a trend that the Russian leader called a symptom of a poor political system in the U.S.
Putin, who U.S. officials have accused of swaying the 2016 U.S. presidential race in Trump's favor, broke a streak of hostile diplomatic exchanges between the two leading powers during a speech Thursday in order to defend his former political ally from what he considers unfair criticism at home. Speaking at the Valdai Discussion Club in Sochi, Putin again denied any claims of Russian interference in last year's U.S. elections, asserting that Trump "won honestly" and that he and his supporters have behaved legitimately in response to the current U.S. political climate.
"Inside the country, disrespect is shown for him. This is a regrettable negative component of the U.S. political system," Putin said, according to the state-run Tass Russian News Agency.
"One can argue but one can’t show disrespect, even not for him personally but for those people who voted for him," he added.
Putin also defended Trump's nontraditional, sometimes controversial approach to leading the country, calling the Republican's unpredictable decisions a "reasonable response" to "great domestic resistance" that prevents Trump from delivering on electoral promises. Trump has made similar arguments, mostly blaming the media for what he considers to be an overtly negative portrayal of his administration.
Putin said he believes "the president of the United States does not need any advice because one has to possess certain talent and go through this trial to be elected, even without having the experience of such big administrative work."
Okay at this point I have to believe that Putin is screwing with Trump, because even he cannot believe that this helps his lapdog one little bit.
Or perhaps I'm wrong and Putin really is so arrogant that he actually thinks his words will diffuse any criticisms directed at his Manchurian candidate.

While visiting Texas for photo-op Donald Trump slams the media for lack of courage, immediately gets schooled by Huffington Post reporter.
This completely unnecessary attack was responded to almost immediately by HuffPo's Andy Campbell.Pres. Trump praises Coast Guard for saving people "by going into winds that the media would not go into...unless it's a really good story." pic.twitter.com/6JFH45o0wn— ABC News (@ABC) September 2, 2017

If you have been watching any of the footage, ALL of which was brought to you by brave reporters and camera operators on the ground by the way, you have undoubtedly seen many instances of reporters risking their lives to save people and their pets trapped by the flood waters.Trump didn't even talk to the victims, and he parachuted in TWICE. You did great bud.— Andy Campbell (@AndyBCampbell) September 3, 2017
It really is kind of miraculous that so far no journalists have lost their lives, though a few HAVE been injured.
What is more there are all kinds of everyday people in Texas right now putting their lives in peril to save people still trapped by floodwaters.
What exactly did Trump do to help again?

He also uses tactics like this:
President Donald Trump plans to address the nation on his strategy for the war in Afghanistan.
The White House says Trump will speak to the country on Monday at 9 p.m. EDT from Fort Myer in Arlington, Virginia.
Trump and his national security team met Friday at the Camp David presidential retreat in Maryland to reach agreement on a strategy.
Smoke and mirrors my friends, smoke and mirrors.
Literally EVERYTHING that Trump tweets or says right now is to distract us from the Russian investigations or the shit storm that is happening within the White House right now.
Personally I am not that easily distracted.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions to crack down on the real problem with the Trump Administration. The journalists who keep reporting on its incompetence.
Attorney General Jeff Sessions says that the Department of Justice (DoJ) is reviewing policies for subpoenaing reporters during investigations of federal intelligence leaks, an indicator that the US government may consider more aggressive tactics to try and force journalists to identify their sources.
"One of the things we are doing is reviewing the policies affecting media subpoenas," Mr Sessions said, announcing his administration's crackdown on leaks during a press conference. "We respect the important role that the press plays, and we will give our support. But, it is not unlimited. They cannot place lives at risk with impunity."
Mr Sessions said that he had instructed his Justice Department to review its leak prosecution policies earlier this year, and that the results "concerned" him. There were too few referrals for prosecution over classified leaks, too few investigations, and an insufficient amount of resources dedicated to those investigations, he said.
"We will not allow rogue anonymous sources with security clearances to sell out our country," Mr Sessions said. "These cases, to investigate and prosecute, are never easy. But cases will be made and leakers will be held accountable."
Yeah well the thing is that the leakers are not so much trying to "sell out our country," as they are trying to "rescue our country from the clutches of a mad man."
Of course the truly pathetic part of this, besides you know the whole attack on our first amendment, is that Sessions is totally doing this just to save his job.
He knew he was next on the chopping block so he pulled out some bullshit like this to hold on for a little bit longer.
Kellyanne "Oh god I woke in a pool of my own vomit again" Conway has also suggested that the White House staff might be forced into taking lie detector tests.
Because nothing says we are one big happy family, like strapping somebody to a machine and then drilling them under hot lights for an hour.
Chuck Todd has already essentially declared what the media's response will be to any subpoenas from the Justice Department concerning their sources.
Well played. If DoJ media source threat is real (I assume it's not; just a show presser to please WH) then I look forward to ignoring that subpoena— Chuck Todd (@chucktodd) August 4, 2017

Republican congressional candidate in Montana body slams Guardian reporter. Update!
Courtesy of the Guardian:
The Republican candidate for Montana’s congressional seat slammed a Guardian reporter to the floor on the eve of the state’s special election, breaking his glasses and shouting, “Get the hell out of here.”
Ben Jacobs, a Guardian political reporter, was asking Greg Gianforte, a tech millionaire running for the seat vacated by Ryan Zinke, about the Republican healthcare plan when the candidate allegedly “body-slammed” the reporter.
“He took me to the ground,” Jacobs said by phone from the back of an ambulance. “This is the strangest thing that has ever happened to me in reporting on politics.”
Jacobs subsequently reported the incident to the police. Gianforte’s campaign did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Audio of the abortive interview recorded by Jacobs captures the altercation, and appears to reference previous questioning from another Guardian reporter. “I’m sick and tired of you guys,” Gianforte said. “The last guy who came here did the same thing. Get the hell out of here. Get the hell out of here. The last guy did the same thing. Are you with the Guardian?”
“Yes! You just broke my glasses,” Jacobs replied.
“The last guy did the same damn thing,” Gianforte said.
“You just body slammed me and broke my glasses,” Jacob said.
“Get the hell out of here,” Gianforte yelled.
I will say this though, I think that Mr. Gianforte can kiss his political career goodbye.
I wonder if other Republicans are going to respond to questions about the CBO in such an aggressive manner?
Update: The campaign just released a statement:

Donald Trump feigns ignorance in allowing photographer from Russian news service access to the White House, while former intelligence officials warn it was a potential breach of security.
Courtesy of WaPo:Ambassador Kislyak and President Trump / Посол С.Кисляк и Президент Д.Трамп pic.twitter.com/Ckkx2YL9KX— Russia in USA 🇷🇺 (@RusEmbUSA) May 10, 2017
A photographer for a Russian state-owned news agency was allowed into the Oval Office on Wednesday during President Trump’s meeting with Russian diplomats, a level of access that was criticized by former U.S. intelligence officials as a potential security breach.
The officials cited the danger that a listening device or other surveillance equipment could have been brought into the Oval Office while hidden in cameras or other electronics. Former U.S. intelligence officials raised questions after photos of Trump’s meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov were posted online by the Tass news agency.
Among those commenting on the issue was former deputy CIA director David S. Cohen. Responding to a question posed online about whether it was a sound decision to allow the photographer into the Oval Office, Cohen replied on Twitter: “No it was not.” He declined to elaborate when reached by phone.
The White House downplayed the danger saying that the photographer was screened just like any US journalist would be when entering the White House.
However the intelligence officials suggest that such a screening would not be adequate to locate any kind of sophisticated listening device that the photographer might have smuggled in.
What is perhaps equally troubling is that the White House did not seem to be aware that the photographer was working for the Russia news outlet.
The administration official also said the White House had been misled about the role of the Russian photographer. Russian officials had described the individual as Lavrov’s official photographer without disclosing that he also worked for Tass.
“We were not informed by the Russians that their official photographer was dual-hatted and would be releasing the photographs on the state news agency,” the administration official said.
As a result, White House officials said they were surprised to see photos posted online showing Trump not only with Lavrov but also smiling and shaking hands with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak.
It should be noted that while the Russian news photographer seemed to have complete access to Donald Trump and his visitors, there were NO American journalists allowed to document the event.
In any other administration this would be considered shocking.
Another reason for concern is that apparently Putin himself instructed Donald Trump to take this meeting with Lavrov.
Courtesy of The Hill:
A White House spokesman told Politico that Putin requested the two meet during Trump’s last phone call with the foreign leader.
“He chose to receive him because Putin asked him to,” the spokesman said. “Putin did specifically ask on the call when they last talked.”
Just another reminder that for all intents and purposes Russia is now calling the shots.

Former NSA analyst claims that Donald Trump is working with the Russians to target journalists.
Courtesy of The Independent:Learned fm very reliable IC sources that Trump WH, w/help fm Russian intel, is targeting US journalists. Rough road ahead. Get ready, peeps— John Schindler (@20committee) March 7, 2017
US President Donald Trump is allegedly targeting US journalists with help from Russian intelligence, a former National Security Agency (NSA) analyst has claimed.
John Schindler, a security expert and former counterintelligence officer, tweeted: “Learned fm very reliable IC sources that Trump WH, w/help fm Russian intel, is targeting US journalists. Rough road ahead. Get ready, peeps.”
It was not immediately clear in what way journalists were allegedly being targeted however the explosive claim is likely to add weight to allegations of Trump-Russia collusion.
This is the second time that this John Schindler guy has dropped a bombshell.
I am still not sure how much credibility we can give him, however we do already know for a fact that the Russians have been targeting American journalists.
And we also know that Trump essentially asked them to hack Hillary Clinton's e-mails.
And Putin has a well known history of targeting journalists.
So from what we already know about Trump, and Putin, is it really that far fetched to think that they might be working together to destroy their mutual enemy?
The press?

Just a reminder that this is why Donald Trump is too afraid to attend the White House Correspondents' Dinner.
I swear I could watch that over and over again on a loop and never get tired of it.
But see THIS is why Trump does not want to sit up on that stage for the dinner.
He knows that he will be following the guy who was often called the "Comedian-in-Chief."
And he also knows that since he has started a war with the press that the jokes at his expense will be BRUTAL.
However what he does not seem to realize is that the show WILL go on, and that with him out of the room the jokes will only be MORE BRUTAL.
Personally I can hardly wait to see this year's dinner.
I actually had no intention of watching it with Trump attending, but now that he chickened out I wouldn't miss it for the world.

Spicy blocks several news agencies, critical of his boss, from attending briefing.
![]() |
Actual photo of Sean Spicer during this briefing. No, really. |
Journalists from The New York Times and several other news organizations were prohibited from attending a briefing by President Trump’s press secretary on Friday, a highly unusual breach of relations between the White House and its press corps.
Reporters from The Times, BuzzFeed News, CNN, The Los Angeles Times and Politico were not allowed to enter the West Wing office of the press secretary, Sean M. Spicer, for the scheduled briefing. Aides to Mr. Spicer only allowed in reporters from a handpicked group of news organizations that, the White House said, had been previously confirmed.
Those organizations included Breitbart News, the One America News Network and The Washington Times, all with conservative leanings. Journalists from ABC, CBS, The Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, and Fox News also attended.
Reporters from Time magazine and The Associated Press, who were set to be allowed in, chose not to attend the briefing in protest of the White House’s actions.
“Nothing like this has ever happened at the White House in our long history of covering multiple administrations of different parties,” Dean Baquet, the executive editor of The Times, said in a statement. “We strongly protest the exclusion of The New York Times and the other news organizations. Free media access to a transparent government is obviously of crucial national interest.”
You know this isn't a campaign event where a candidate might want to keep certain critical new outlets out of the loop. This is a freaking White House briefing.
And isn't it interesting that it seems to be the organizations who have really done the most work on the Russia/Trump connection that are being blocked?
This is essentially the Trump administration showing their cowardice and that they are terrified of what the free press will reveal next about them.
So much for Donald Trump's supposed tough guy credibility.
At least one organization that WAS allowed into the briefing voiced outrage:
"The Wall Street Journal strongly objects to the White House's decision to bar certain media outlets from today's gaggle," a Journal spokesman said. "Had we known at the time, we would not have participated and we will not participate in such closed briefings in the future."
You know it is getting hard to tell if Sean Spicer is becoming more and more like the caricature of him played by Melissa McCarthy on SNL, or if he was this way from the beginning, and it is only becoming more obvious.
Yeah, I'm stumped.

White House claims that allegation they planned to use National Guard to round up illegal immigrants was fake news. Media says, "What about this leaked draft proposal to do just that?"
Courtesy of AP:
The White House distanced itself Friday from a Department of Homeland Security draft proposal to use the National Guard to round up unauthorized immigrants, but lawmakers said the document offers insight into the Trump administration's internal efforts to enact its promised crackdown on illegal immigration.
Administration officials said the proposal, which called for mobilizing up to 100,000 troops in 11 states, was rejected, and would not be part of plans to carry out President Donald Trump's aggressive immigration policy.
If implemented, the National Guard idea, contained in an 11-page memo (http://apne.ws/2l1Dj0k ) obtained by The Associated Press, could have led to enforcement action against millions of immigrants living nowhere near the Mexican border. Four states that border on Mexico were included in the proposal — California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas — but it also encompassed seven states contiguous to those four — Oregon, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana.
Later White House spokes-liar Sean Spicer condemned this reporting.
Courtesy of Business Insider:
"It is false," the White House press secretary, Sean Spicer, said, according to a pool report. "It is irresponsible to be saying this. There is no effort at all to round up, to utilize the National Guard to round up illegal immigrants."
"I wish you guys had asked before you tweeted," Spicer added.
Yeah reporters, why didn't you ask Spicy, instead of running with actual documentation?
Wait, you did?
An AP reporter, however, replied that the wire service had asked the White House for comment multiple times before publishing the report, which was based off of a leaked DHS draft memo. The original AP story notes that neither the White House nor the Department of Homeland Security responded to requests for comment.
"AP reached out to the White House repeatedly beginning 24 hours before publishing this story and also asked the Department of Homeland Security for comment prior to publication," the AP's director of media relations told Business Insider. "We stand by our reporting."
Oh and there was also this from the original AP article:
However, DHS staffers said Thursday that they had been told by colleagues in two DHS departments that the proposal was still being considered as recently as Feb. 10. DHS spokeswoman Gillian Christensen declined to say who wrote the memo, how long it had been under consideration or when it had been rejected.
I think by now you guys know my baseline position on all of this "he said, she said" stuff.
Since essentially EVERY SINGLE ONE of Trump's spokespeople, campaign staff, and advisers have been caught lying multiple times I simply do not believe a fucking word that comes out of that administration's various pie holes.
If I have to choose between respected news organizations and that bad Melissa McCarthy impersonator, I am going with respected news organizations every time.
So yeah, this administration most DEFINITELY considered using a military force to kick in doors and haul away undocumented workers in this country.

Omarosa, Trump's communications official, is now stating that her boss has collected dossiers on several journalists full of "negative information." Can you say suppression of the First Amendment?
Courtesy of WaPo:
Conflict and controversy seem to follow Omarosa Manigault, who stirred up plenty of both as a reality-TV star and a longtime associate of President Trump.
Manigault, who is now a communications official in the Trump administration, got into a heated argument with a White House reporter just steps from the Oval Office last week, according to witnesses. The reporter, April Ryan, said Manigault “physically intimidated” her in a manner that could have warranted intervention by the Secret Service.
Ryan also said Manigault made verbal threats, including the assertion that Ryan was among several journalists on whom Trump officials had collected “dossiers” of negative information.
Manigault, a onetime friend of Ryan’s, declined to address Ryan’s accusations on the record, offering only this emailed statement: “My comment: Fake news!” She did not specify what she considered false.
This account follows a Politico report that state sponsored hackers, ie Russians, have been targeting journalists:
Jonathan Chait of New York Magazine said he received several messages from Google warning him about an attack from a government-backed hacker starting shortly after the election. He said the most recent warning came two to three weeks ago.
Julia Ioffe, who recently started at The Atlantic and has covered Russia for years, said she got warnings as recently as two weeks ago.
Ezra Klein, the founder of Vox, said he had received the warning as recently as a few days back. CNN senior media reporter Brian Stelter said he has been getting the alerts for the past few months.
Other journalists who confirmed they’ve recently gotten the warnings include New York Times national security correspondent David Sanger, Times columnist Paul Krugman and Yahoo Washington bureau chief Garance Franke-Ruta.
GQ special contributor Keith Olbermann said the warnings started a few weeks after the election, and he received the most recent alert earlier this week, a “big bright red bar” across the top of his Gmail. Some of the reporters say they are tightening up their email security to try to prevent the hackers from getting in.
There are other journalists listed in the Politico article, but you get the drift.
Most, if not all, of these reporters are also convinced that the attempts are coming from Russia.
So now that Putin has helped Trump get elected he is going to use the same technique to protect him from criticism by America's free press.
Is there ANYBODY still not convinced that Donald Trump is a tool of Russia?

Rachel Maddow's interview with Kellyanne Conway was nothing short of amazing.
Courtesy of Raw Story:
Pointing out that Trump encouraged his rally crowd to target ABC reporter Martha Raddatz over false claims that she cried the night he was elected, Conway tried to insist that everyone on Trump’s team has “enormous respect” for Raddatz, whom they all agree is a “tour de force.”
Maddow reminded Conway that “telling a story about her that is not true” to crowds of thousands throughout the United States is hardly indicative of “enormous respect” and asked if Raddatz could expect an apology sometime soon. Conway insisted those types of conversations don’t happen in public.
“The accusation was made publicly,” Maddow pressed.
Conway quickly changed the topic, instead discussing Trump’s “relationship with the press” and the “negative press coverage” she says marred his campaign.
Later in the interview Conway defended Melania's hiring of the same lawyer that drove Gawker out of business to go after the Daily Mail and a blogger who insinuated that she had once worked as an escort.
Conway's defense of that is that the damage had already been done so even though there was an apology as well as a retraction of the story it was too late.
When Rachel asked if this lawsuit might continue even after Melania becomes first lady, Conway said that it might.
When Rachel mentioned that this was unheard of for first families, Conway suggested that the Trump's had been under attack by the media in ways that no other presidential family had been forced to endure, “It’s just different for the Trumps."
At this point I literally jumped up out of my seat and yelled at the TV for Maddow to remind this peroxide little bitch, that her boss had risen to national attention by claiming that the sitting President of the United States was not born in this country.
Despite my yelling Rachel did not do that, nor did she mention the number of times that Carson herself had claimed that Hillary Clinton was a criminal and about to be indicted during the campaign.
Nor about that time her boss claimed that Ted Cruz's dad had something to do with the assassination of JFK.
(Though much earlier in the interview she did confront her about Trump's National Security Advisor Gen. Flynn had tweeted that Hillary Clinton was part of that fake Pizzagate scandal, and therefore a child rapist.)
We talk about the death of irony with the election of this orange tinted buffoon, but this interview drove that point home like a stake through the heart.
But even more chilling is that it reveals that not only does this evil administration expect to never be held accountable for their lies and misstatements, but that if any news outlet or blogger reports negatively about them they risk being sued into non-existence.
This is not a presidential administration, this is an authoritarian dictatorship where dissension will not be tolerated, and critics must fear for their livelihoods, if not their very lives.

It's election day! And here is just another reminder as to why it is so damn important that you participate.
This is a Donald Trump supporter seen at a rally in Minnesota.
And his candidate is a guy who has absolutely NO respect for the First Amendment, and would like to treat our journalists just like his pal Vladimir Putin treats them in Russia.
And these are the people who will see nothing wrong with that.
THEY must not prevail!

Dan Rather takes his fellow reporters to the wood shed.
Courtesy of Rather's Facebook page:
Donald Trump’s disdain, mockery, and antagonism of the press, whose freedoms are enshrined in the Bill of Rights and whose presence has provided ballast to our democracy since its inception, raises very serious questions about his fitness for the presidency of the United States.
For a long while, these thoughts have been coursing through my veins with concern and disbelief, and yet my abiding loyalty to the notion of fair, accurate and unbiased journalism held me in check from saying it out loud – much as I suspect it has muzzled the true feelings of many of my colleagues. But we must remember that Donald Trump knows this and cynically plays the press corps’ deep desire for fairness to his undeserved benefit. The latest, barring the traveling press from covering an event and using them as ridicule in a speech, are but the most recent chapters in a novel full of outrageous acts. And this sentiment apparently extends to members of his own family as witnessed by his daughter Ivanka’s actions in an interview with Cosmo.
I am well aware that I will be met with bile and venom for saying this, called a communist, a liberal in bed with Hillary Clinton, a washed-up joke. To quote Rhett Butler in Gone With the Wind, “frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn.” Let others attack my motives. My conscience is clean. This is not about partisan politics, about who is right on immigration or gun control. This is about the very machinery that has allowed our American experiment to persist and thrive, a machinery which is far more fragile than we would like to believe.
Trump’s relationship with the press is at the heart of so much that is troubling about his candidacy - the secrecy, the lack of transparency on something as normal as tax returns, the flaunting of the very rules by which we elect our leaders, the appeasement of hate groups. And his embrace of Roger Ailes and Breitbart, institutions who have polluted press freedoms, is a further dangerous sign of decay. And yet when presented with this challenge, too much of the press has been cowed into inaction. This is a man who can be fact-checked into obscurity by any second grader with an Internet connection.
And yet when he issues a mealy-mouth non-apology about President Obama’s obvious pedigree as an American, here we are with too many in the press not acknowledging his years of lies (check your Twitter feeds about how the New York Times initially covered this event). All of this of course sets the stage for Trump to lie again about somehow birtherism being Clinton’s fault.
I fear that this mindset will infect the debates. Trump is already setting the stage for that. If you are moderating and are not going to fact check him, you might as well just roll campaign speeches live - far too many of which have been shown on television without being subjected to journalistic context. If these debates will be debates in name only, another opportunity for Trump to flout fairness by spewing his venom and bullshine, I say cancel them.
Enough is enough. It is a reality that every reporter must come to grips with. Trump is not a normal candidate. This is not a normal election. He will set a precedent that other demagogues will study and follow. Fear, combined with the lure of ratings, views, clicks and profits, have hypnotized too much of the press into inaction and false equivalency for far too long. I am optimistic the trance is being broken. Fear not the Internet trolls. Fear instead the judgement of history.
Very, very well put.
By the way if you are one of those who wants to dismiss Rather as a former journalist with a damaged reputation, you should take the time to watch the movie "Truth" and learn a little about the terrible injustice done to this man.
He is in fact a brave man and a national treasure and he should be treated as such.

So did Donald Trump pose as his own spokesperson back in the 1990's? Certainly sounds like it.
Here is the entire Today show video from this morning.
Trump: Wow. You mean you are going so low as to talk about something that took place 25 years ago, about whether or not I made a phone call? I guess you’re saying under a presumed name.
Guthrie: Yes, under a presumed name.
Trump: Okay. The answer is no. Let’s get on to more current subjects. I know it’s wonderful for your listeners, but we have more important things to discuss.
I disagree. If a person running for President is so unhinged as to fake being an entirely different person so that he can brag about himself, without seeming arrogant (A pretense that he has completely dropped these days by the way.), I think THAT is something the voting public deserves to know.
And it appears that we actually do know that is was him.
Courtesy of the Washington Post:
A recording obtained by The Washington Post captures what New York reporters and editors who covered Trump’s early career experienced in the 1970s, ’80s and ’90s: calls from Trump’s Manhattan office that resulted in conversations with “John Miller” or “John Barron” — public-relations men who sound precisely like Trump himself — who indeed are Trump, masquerading as an unusually helpful and boastful advocate for himself, according to the journalists and several of Trump’s top aides.
So apparently in the minds of the journalists who covered him and his own top aides, there was no question that this was indeed Trump.
And that could prove problematic. Just get a load of some of the things this "spokesman" said abouthimself Trump:
“Actresses,” Miller said in the call to Carswell, “just call to see if they can go out with him and things.” Madonna “wanted to go out with him.” And Trump’s alter ego boasted that in addition to living with Maples, Trump had “three other girlfriends.”
Yeah that should really help Trump with the female voters.
The other Trump alias, this John Barron, is also a name that pops up quite frequently in Trump's life:
A “John Baron,” described as a “vice-president of the Trump organization,” appeared in a front-page New York Times article as early as 1980, defending Trump’s decision to destroy sculptures on the facade of the Bonwit Teller department store building, the Fifth Avenue landmark he was demolishing to make way for his Trump Tower. Barron was quoted variously as a “Trump spokesman,” “Trump executive,” or “Trump representative” in New York magazine, The Washington Post and other publications.
Trump’s fascination with the name “Barron” persisted for decades. When he was seeing Maples while still married to Ivana, he sometimes used the code name “the Baron” when he left messages for her. In 2004, when Trump commissioned a dramatic TV series based on the life of a New York real estate mogul like him, his only request to the writer was to name the main character “Barron.” And when Trump and his third wife, Melania, had a son, they named him Barron.
You know just when I think I have seen the oddest think imaginable in this election cycle, I get proven wrong.
I literally have NO idea what comes nest, but I am certain it will not be boring.

Journalist attempts to stump Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau with question about quantum computing. He answers it. Correctly.
This guy is smooth.
If you want to make yourself ill just compare him to the front runner in the GOP nomination.
Canada is a pretty lucky country.
Hopefully they will cherish their intelligent charismatic leader far more than Americans have done for the last seven and a half years.

Sarah Palin is very excited that homophobic racist Senator Jeff Sessions has now endorsed Donald Trump.
![]() |
"I don't know what happened. I also taught Track that when striking a woman, it's always with an open hand. Less chance of bruising that way. |
Bold, smart, respected, conservative Senate icon endorses Donald Trump with enthusiastic proclamation: "This isn't a campaign, this is a movement!" - Sen. Jeff Sessions
(Thank you for hosting Trump and me in your office at our Anti-Iranian Nuke Rally, Sen. Sessions. Your leadership in the pro-American Security/pro-Israel movement is unsurpassed, as is your pro-legal immigration/anti-criminal border crossings effort. America thanks you!)
- Sarah Palin
Oh yes, I'm sure that Sarah Palin speaks for all of America in thanking Senator Sessions for selling his endorsement to "the Donald."
But seriously, who better for Sessions to endorse considering that he once referred to the NAACP and ACLU as "un-American" and "Communist inspired" organizations?
Senator Sessions is also "offended" by the views of scientists warning of man made changes to our climate, and once compared support for marriage equality to support for pedophilia.
So here's a thought.
If Donald Trump finally gets his little Day-Glo orange feelings hurt by the GOP and decides to run as a third party candidate, as he has threatened, does that mean that Palin will finally drop the facade and support him in that endeavor as well?
Hey, maybe if she did he might actually consider putting her on the ticket with him.
Or am I just being greedy now?
By the way apparently Donald Trump's Secret Service agents have been informed that the real danger to Trump comes from the press which is the only explanation I can come up with to explain this:
However it is nice to see that Track Palin finally has a job.
